Round 10 - Hockenheim I Introduction

It’s with a greatly unfortunate irony that the lead-up to this weekend’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim has been dominated by talk of the Nurburgring. The two legendary German venues have alternated the responsibility of hosting the Formula 1 circus over the last four years, but that, sadly, may be about to change. The governor of the Rhineland-Palatinate area in which the Nurburgring lies conceded this week that the Nurburgring, which is government-owned but being operated by a private firm working under a long-term lease, is facing insolvency. The circuit’s seemingly insurmountable debt dates back to its £235 million ($350 million) redevelopment in 2009, and exists despite the Formula 1 group’s efforts to gradually lower its race fee in recent years. While Hockenheim has previously baulked at the economic burden of hosting a Grand Prix on an annual basis, one can only hope that, if necessary, it can find a way to make it work. The German Grand Prix has been absent from the world championship calendar on just three previous occasions, and the most recent of those was a mere issue of nomenclature (The Nurburgring’s race was designated the European Grand Prix in 2007 due to a dispute with Hockenheim over using the German GP name). The four-year absence from the calendar of the French Grand Prix, however, is a firm indication that outside of Monaco, no races are a protected species in the world of F1. Green means go!

Round 10 - Hockenheim I Cover Story

Building Bl

Caterham amps up ambitious F1

I

t’s been a rocky first two and a half seasons in the Formula 1 World Championship for the Caterham F1 team.

Ugly legal rows with the Lotus Group, which eventually saw a name change from Team Lotus to its current Caterham moniker, and Force India, where it was convicted of utilising some of its rival team’s designs, have headlined a tempestuous initiation into F1. Perhaps most importantly of all, world championship points have proven elusive. Those issues however have hardly dampened the enthusiasm of its flamboyant owner Tony Fernandes. The Malaysian airline tycoon’s dedication to building an automotive business empire centred around a successful F1 team appears to remain as strong as ever. The coming weeks will mark a significant milestone in his ambitious plan as the entire Caterham operation, which includes its F1 and GP2 teams, road car division and various technology companies, begins its migration toward a single base. The Leafield, England, factory chosen

by Fernandes was formerly the home of the ill-fated Arrows and Super Aguri F1 efforts, and will soon house more than 500 Caterham employees.

to compete with some of the most famous motorsport and car brands on and off track, through innovation, passion and value.

The F1 team will be the first to make the move - its trucks having left their existing Norfolk base for the final time prior to the back-to-back German and Hungarian Grands Prix that precede the mid-season break.

“We have had a couple of well documented issues along the way, but we are now in the middle of 2012, 34 months since work started on our first F1 car and I think we have reached the most important point in our development so far.

Not surprisingly, the move to Leafield has given Fernandes cause to stop and reflect on the growth of his F1 dream thus far.

“Caterham Group is now the embodiment of all the ideas and dreams we had in 2009 and now, with Leafield open for business, we have put in place the next vital stage for the continuing development of all the Caterham Group businesses.” The Caterham F1 effort was born out of what was arguably an even more ambitious bid to make the Grand Prix grid by small British Formula 3 team Litespeed. The squad gained one of four new entries to the 2010 world championship, before selling its right to compete to Fernandes when the then FIA president Max Mosley’s push for a budget cap came to naught.

“It is hard to believe that it is less than three years since we first walked into the empty factory in Hingham where we started the F1 team back in 2009,” he says. “At that point we had four full-time employees, a couple of notepads and a rather daunting job list that many people said was utterly unachievable. “While the F1 team was building up fast, we also had a plan to lay the foundations for an automotive and technology focused group of businesses that would allow us

Gascoyne had been part of the Litespeed project, and has subsequently played a significant role in building Caterham, first as technical director of the F1 team, and more recently as the chief technical officer of the entire Caterham group. According to Gascoyne’s replacement within the race team, Mark Smith, the move to Leafield will help to attract more high-level employees previously put off by the squad’s distant location. “One of the immediate benefits of the move is in attracting people to come and work with us.” says Smith. “Since I joined the team in 2011 I have been aware that there have been people we wanted to bring to Norfolk who were reluctant to move their families out of ‘motorsport valley’ where all the UK based F1 teams, and their associated supply chains and partners, are based. “There has never been an issue with people not sharing our vision, being as excited about our future as everyone who works Continue on page 10 >>

with Tony and Riad (Asmat, Caterham Group CEO) are, but it was undeniable that geography may have prevented us from expanding at quite the rate we want to. “Now Leafield is open we have no barriers. We are in the heart of the motorsport industry, not only in the UK but worldwide, and we have an aggressive employment plan in place that will help us keep moving up the grid.” Although the team immediately established itself as the benchmark of the three new squads that made the grid in 2010, moving up into the midfield has proven a far more difficult challenge. A 12th place achieved by Heikki Kovalainen in the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix remains the team’s best finish, while Q2 appearances on Saturday have proven few and far between.

This season’s high points have seen Kovalainen make it out of Q1 in both Monaco and Valencia. Both the Finn and team-mate Vitaly Petrov, who was brought in to replace Jarno Trulli for 2012, have scored best finishes of 13th, but that really fails to tell the whole story. The gap between the top Caterham and the fastest time in Q1 has dropped significantly since the start of the season, where even Kovalainen’s efforts could not draw within 2.5s of the benchmark. The margin hovered between 2.0s and 2.3s over the next two races, before dropping below 1.6s in four of the last five dry sessions held. According to Fernandes, the increased level of competition this year has masked the team’s true progress. >> Continue on page 13

“This is an extraordinary season and it is possible that in previous years the gains we have made would have been more obvious,” he says.

are medium, downforce levels are between medium and high and this is a track where the stresses on the engine and the gearbox are in the mid-range.

“We are still a small team, but we have already made very good progress this year and with a little luck and even more hard work I know we will make that step into the midfield and join the battles that are going on ahead of us.”

“This means the drivers can be aggressive throughout the whole lap and that puts the onus on the engineers to find setups that allow them to push as much as possible, in the high speed sections and into the twisty bits in the stadium. If we can do that successfully, and fine tune the revised exhausts and bodywork, I think we can have a good weekend.”

Smith meanwhile says he’s confident that the aerodynamic upgrades brought to Silverstone have set the team up well for a strong performance this weekend. “In Silverstone we did not maximise the new aero package we brought but the specific demands of Hockenheim definitely give us a chance to do so,” he says. “Obviously we will have also had more time to analyse the data we generated over the weekend so I am reasonably confident we will be able to get back to where we want to be. “Technically, Hockenheim is all about mediums. Round 10 - Hockenheim I Track Details

Circuit Details Hockenheim Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane

THE CAR Rear wing We’ll be taking a similar specification of front wing to that of Melbourne, Sepang, Bahrain and Barcelona, which all have relatively high speed sections as we see here Brakes This is not a circuit with heavy braking demands, however good feedback from the brakes is required to help the drivers avoid locking up into turns two and six. Turn eight is another place where good feel on the brake pedal is rewarded, with front wheel locking on turn in a common occurrence. Suspension There isn’t a great deal of kerb usage or anything which relies on any particular aspect of the suspension here. You need a stable car through the quick change of direction in turns three and four, which can be achieved through a combination

of aerodynamic balance and suspension settings. Tyres Soft and medium compound Pirelli tyres have been allocated here; the same combination as used in Australia, China, Bahrain and Valencia so far this season. Front wing The high speed sectors of the track are the priority here, with set up aimed at the faster corners such as turns seven, ten and twelve. Engine Overall power is the focus over low end driveability here thanks to a relatively fast circuit layout, particularly from the exit of turn two down to turn six.

THE Circuit Turn 2 A stable car under braking is needed into Turn 2 to allow a clean exit and good traction on to the fastest part of the track.

Turns 3 & 4 Turns 3 and 4 demand good change of direction from the car, with the rear end nicely settled on the exit of the latter to enable good acceleration on to the straight. Turn 6 Turn 6 is an important corner, with drivers braking from high speed into what is the slowest turn on the circuit, then requiring good traction on exit. Turn 7 Turn 7 is taken at high speed; flat out on low fuel, but is slightly more tricky with heavy fuel loads. Turns 10 Turn 10 is off camber and quite tricky to get right. Towards the end of the race it can be taken almost flat out depending on how good the car is, but will not come close to that on heavy fuel. Turns 12-17 High downforce is needed through the low speed stadium section of Turns 12 to 17, which are very narrow making overtaking difficult.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Red Bull Racing will head to this weekend’s German Grand Prix as narrow favourites for victory following their form in both Valencia and Silverstone. While the RB8’s ‘d-spec’ exhaust/rear bodywork upgrades debuted so ominously in Valencia didn’t appear to offer quite the same advantage at Silverstone, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel took first and third in the race respectively. Webber had the edge over his team-mate in the race at Silverstone thanks largely to his superior qualifying performance in the wet on Saturday. The home crowd advantage may just see Vettel turn that around at Hockenheim.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... McLaren looms as the great unknown heading to Hockenheim. The team has struggled for speed in the last two races, and appeared to have fallen behind both Williams and Sauber at Silverstone, where the high-speed sweeping corners were expected to suit the McLaren package. The British squad insists that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with its current package, suggesting that set-up issues may be playing a major role in the slump it has endured since Canada. Regardless, the team will arrive in Germany with a major upgrade package that should at least see Lewis Hamilton fighting among the top five.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Fernando Alonso has contended strongly for victory in each of the last five races, and there’s little to suggest that streak will end this weekend. Just as encouragingly, Felipe Massa finished a mere two places behind his team-mate at Silverstone the Brazilian’s fourth place finish proving his best since October 2010. Mark Webber’s recent contract renewal with Red Bull will have undoubtedly taken some pressure away from Massa, who must now truly believe that remaining with the Scuderia in 2013 is a possibility. Unfortunately for Masss Hockenheim will bring some bad memories too, having been told to move aside for Alonso the last time F1 visited the circuit.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The Mercedes team describes this weekend’s race as its second ‘home Grand Prix’ in two weeks due to the combination of its British roots and current German ownership. With Mercedes operating a large road car factory near Hockenheim, the venue is always teeming with support for the three-pointed star. The race team will head to the circuit with modest hopes however following its struggles at Silverstone. While Nico Rosberg’s race was compromised by a poor qualifying, an inspired performance in the wet Saturday session saw Michael Schumacher start third on the grid. He promptly went backwards in the race.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Qualifying speed is seemingly all that separates the Enstone-based Lotus team from its first victory of the season. The E20s have repeatedly proven better on Sunday afternoons than Saturdays, but not so much that they can make up for starting in the wrong half of the top 10. While the circuit layout and potentially high track temperatures are expected to play into Lotus’ hands, Romain Grosjean’s weekend has already been dealt a blow in the form of a fiverace grid penalty for a post-Silverstone gearbox change. The team has promised some ‘interesting upgrades’ for this race, so don’t discount Kimi Raikkonen from podium contention.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The momentum this team gained with a double points finish in Valencia surely evaporated at Silverstone, where top 12 starting spots for both Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg failed to yield a single point. The British Grand Prix was particularly galling for the Scot, who suffered a puncture on the opening lap. Regardless, this team has shown top 10 pace for the last four successive Grands Prix, and should be confident of at least performing on par with midfield rivals Sauber and Williams this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sauber is another squad to head to Hockenheim optimistic of points despite failing to score at Silverstone. Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez were both in the headlines for the wrong reasons following the British Grand Prix. The Japanese driver was fined 25,000 by the FIA after knocking over several of his mechanics in a bungled pitstop, while Perez was left calling for action against Pastor Maldonado after a mistake from the Williams driver ended the Mexican’s race. Qualifying further up the order this weekend would at least rectify Perez’s issue.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Toro Rosso did not get the rain it was after on race day at Silverstone, thereby consigning both Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne to what has become a customarily dull Sunday afternoon. The Italian based squad started the year with a car capable of troubling the points scorers, but has suffered badly in the development race as the weeks have unfolded. While there is nothing to suggest that a leap back into the points will be possible this weekend, the Ricciardo will at least be able to aim to extend his qualifying dominance over his French team-mate, having come out on top of the Saturday battle for the eighth time in nine races at Silverstone.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Many eyes will be on Pastor Maldonado’s performance this weekend following the collision with Sergio Perez in the British Grand Prix. The Venezuelan was handed a 10,000 Euro fine and a reprimand from the FIA for his actions, but it was perhaps Perez’s post-race comments that were most stinging. Meanwhile, Bruno Senna has continued to work in Williams’ simulator on his weak qualifying performances, and can draw confidence from having finished in the points in three of the last four races. As always however, this team’s position relative to the field is very hard to predict.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham was one of several teams to be left frustrated by the fickle weather at Silverstone as it tried to evaluate a range of performance upgrades. The team says it hopes to unlock more pace from those same rear bodywork and exhaust pieces this weekend, potentially closing the gap to the bottom of Q2 even further. Heikki Kovalainen meanwhile has effectively put his team on notice in the lead up to this weekend’s race, publically musing over the possibility of looking elsewhere once his contract expires at season’s end. He is undoubtedly one of the team’s greatest assets.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... HRT may not have created a great legacy for itself during its first two and a half seasons of Grand Prix racing, but the team was part of history post-Silverstone when it became the first squad to run a Chinese driver (Ma Qing Hua) in an official Formula 1 session (Silverstone’s Young Driver Test). Meanwhile, the team’s regular drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan will again be out for little more than a reliable run at Hockenheim. The Indian will at least be able to sleep in on Friday morning, with Spaniard Dani Close scheduled to drive for the team in Free Practice 1 for the third time this year.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The Marussia team performed admirably at Silverstone in the shadow of Maria de Villota’s horrific testing accident in the week leading up to the race. With the Spaniard reportedly on the mend, the team will focus on drawing further away from the HRT over the next two races prior to the summer break. Marussia recently joined Williams and HRT at the two-day Silverstone Young Driver Test, where it ran Max Chilton and Rio Haryanto. Both drivers achieved their goal during the test gaining enough mileage to be eligible for an FIA Superlicense.
