Round 20 - Brazil I Introduction

Schumacher’s swansong, take two As Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso squabble over the right to become a three-time world champion this weekend, the only seven-time champion in Formula 1 history will bow out of the sport. Michael Schumacher’s 307th and last Grand Prix start will bring to an end the German’s three-year comeback with Mercedes that followed his first retirement at the end of 2006. The stint with Mercedes has undoubtedly been a disappointment for all concerned as Schumacher has proven unable to add to the 91 victories and 66 pole positions scored in his ‘first career’. The now 43-year-old has been largely outshone by team-mate Nico Rosberg, who will once again finish ahead in the points standings this year. The lacklustre nature of the entire Mercedes operation - particularly in the second half of this season - is likely to ensure, however, that Schumacher’s legacy will remain largely unaffected by the unsuccessful comeback. Memories of Schumacher’s unprecedented string of successes with Ferrari will forever be the era most closely associated with his F1 career, more so than the struggles with Mercedes, or even his earlier stint with Benetton. Conversely, when critics pick apart Schumacher’s career in decades to come, the incidents of Adelaide 1994, Jerez 1997 and Monaco 2006 are more likely to come under the microscope than the fact he managed just one podium in a Mercedes.

Marussia

One can only hope that Mercedes has found something for the final race that will at least allow Schumacher to sign-off with a top 10 finish.

It will be somewhat fitting, though, if Vettel can win another title this weekend. Schumacher’s greatest legacy will arguably be the way that his success ignited German interest in modern Grand Prix racing.

ebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso’s quests to become threetime world champions will come to a head this weekend when the 2012 season concludes at Interlagos.

Under the 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 points system introduced in 2010, Vettel will clinch the title if he finishes in the top four, regardless of Alonso’s result. Continued on page 10 >>

Round 20 - Brazil I Cover Story Conversely, Vettel will need to finish fifth or better if Alonso wins, eighth or better if Alonso finishes second and 10th or better if Alonso finishes third. If the Ferrari pilot does not see the podium, Vettel is ensured the championship. The equations are certainly stacked in Vettel’s favour, especially so given that the 25-year-old hasn’t been off the podium in the last six races - a stretch that has included four victories. Alonso meanwhile has been winless since the German Grand Prix in July, but has at least recorded six podiums from the last seven races. His only sub-rostrum performance came thanks to a first-lap tangle with Romain Grosjean in Japan. Renowned for galvanising teams through his overwhelming belief in eventual success, Alonso is unsurprisingly optimistic ahead of the weekend. “We know it will be difficult for us, but we are confident,” he said prior to flying to Brazil. “We must do our utmost, concentrating on ourselves and making no mistakes and then we can see what Vettel has done. It’s been a championship of highs and lows for everyone, but now we can only be perfect. “However, I think we can sleep more easily than our rivals - we have a lot to gain and little to lose and for them it’s the opposite.

“In 2010 (when Alonso led into the final round before being overhauled by Vettel) the situation was reversed so I hope that once again the outcome goes in favour of the one who is behind at the moment. “I don’t think the track will condition the result. We have seen that Red Bull is strong on all types of track so that should also be the case in Interlagos. But Formula 1 is strange and anything can happen. The important thing is not to be caught out unprepared.” The main fear for Red Bull is that the “anything can happen” factor will involve its fragile Renault alternators. Round 20 - Brazil I Cover Story in Texas was the third time that one of the team’s cars has endured an alternator failure this season. It is expected that the RB8s will both be fitted with a new specification alternator for Interlagos. While fellow Renault engine customers Williams and Caterham used the uprated units in the US, Red Bull elected to stick with the previous version. “It’s just a worry, full stop,” admitted Red Bull team principal Christian Horner following the US race. “Unfortunately it is the third alternator we’ve had and there have been others in other cars. The new version has raced on other engine cycles and hopefully that’s what we’ll have for Brazil.” Red Bull secured its third consecutive Constructors’ Championship crown in Texas, and Horner is determined to see Vettel chalk up the same statistic in the Drivers’ title. “We just have to approach the next race as we have the previous 19,” he said of the decider. “We have to go there, attack the weekend, and get the best out of ourselves; the car, the strategy, the drivers, and reliability. “Anything can happen, as we have seen this season. But it is good to be going there

with a lead, and we go there determined to close the job off.” No matter the result, the winner will join an elite club of drivers that have won three or more championships.

Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna are about to have company.

Round 20 - Brazil I Track Details

Autódromo José Carlos Pace Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane

THE CAR Rear wing Downforce level is a little bit lighter than Texas or Abu Dhabi with the intention of maximising top speed on the long straight. Brakes There are no particular challenges for the brakes other than ensuring that temperatures remain relatively high at the end of the long straight, which forms the downhill entry into Turn 1. Suspension As we see so often in the current calendar, this is a compromise. The car needs to be good in the high speed turns, but also have good change of direction for the low speed Turns 8 & 9. Good traction is also required for the exits of Turns 8, 9 & 10 and particularly Turn 12 for maximum speed heading up the long hill on to the startfinish straight. Tyres As in Austin. the allocation here is once more the hardest in Pirelli’s arsenal with the

hard and medium compounds elected. This is quite conservative and could make for a one stop race depending on degradation levels. With a relative absence of high lateral loadings – discounting the final sector – Interlagos is not expected to be too demanding on the tyre structure. Front wing As there are some pretty quick corners, extra front wing is a consideration to balance the car. Turns where this is relevant include 4, 5, 6, 10, 11; all of which are quite challenging corners. Engine Interlagos is all about altitude. The track is 800m above sea level, meaning the RS27-2012 could be producing around 8% less power than at a sea-level race such as Korea. Over the course of the lap the track also undulates significantly, putting the oil and fuel systems under considerable pressure; particularly through the long final left hand corner onto the pit straight.

THE Circuit Turn 1 The first corner presents a good overtaking opportunity. It’s a tricky downhill turn at

the end of a long straight making it easy for drivers to out-brake themselves. Turns 2-3 It’s important to get a good exit from Turn 1; carrying the momentum on through Turn 2 into the high speed Turn 3 and on to the DRS straight. Turns 4-7 The DRS zone on the back straight presents a good overtaking opportunity heading into Turn 4. Turns 4, 5, 6 & 7 are all quite high speed before heading in to the lower speed Turn 8. Turns 8-10 Flat kerbs at the low speed Turns 8 & 10 allow drivers a degree of freedom in their apex point. Turn 12 Turn 12 is crucial for a quick lap, with exit speed defining how fast you can charge up the hill and along the straight. Turns 13-15 The uphill section means high loads for the engine due to an altitude-induced oxygen deficit.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Despite the competitiveness of the McLaren package in Austin, history suggests that the Red Bulls will be the class of the field around the sweeps of Interlagos. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber have shared the victories here in each of the last three years, with a one-two in 2011 coming despite a gearbox problem on the German’s car. Mechanical issues are the only real question mark again this year, particularly in the RB8’s electrical system. Alternator and/or KERS issues have dogged the team over the season - costing Webber third place in Austin. Vettel is clearly the favourite to take the title, but it’s far from a done deal.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... McLaren has the somewhat undignified luxury of having neither of its drivers in the championship hunt for the season finale, allowing it to focus solely on victory. Lewis Hamilton showed in Texas that he’s still determined to end his tenure with McLaren on a high. Although Red Bull is likely to have a small speed advantage around Interlagos, Sebastian Vettel’s focus on the championship could well see the Briton take a fifth win of the season.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Ferrari and Fernando Alonso head to Brazil with little to lose. The 13 point margin between Sebastian Vettel and Alonso is a healthy advantage for the German, especially considering that the Red Bull driver will come out on top in any tied points situation. Alonso has only qualified in the top four at one of the last nine Grands Prix, but has managed to find the podium in six of the last seven. Another podium here will at least ensure Vettel has to finish in the points to take the title. Felipe Massa meanwhile always stars at Interlagos and should be in contention for his second podium of the season.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sadly, the recent form of Mercedes leaves little expectations for a memorable final Grand Prix start for Michael Schumacher. The team has not scored a single point in the last five races, with Nico Rosberg qualifying just 17th on the grid last time out in Austin after making a pre-session switch back to the team’s older specification exhaust design. THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Holding onto Kimi Raikkonen’s third place in the Drivers’ Championship will be Lotus’ main focus in Brazil. Fourthplaced Lewis Hamilton enters the event a full 16 points behind Raikkonen, but the McLaren driver is in fine form and could well walk away with the Interlagos victory. Sixth place for Raikkonen in Texas was a somewhat disappointing result following his victory in Abu Dhabi. The Lotus appeared to have the pace for third in the opening stint but fell away as the race progressed. Although this circuit should better suit the E20, returning to the podium will be a major ask.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Force India will be looking to round out the season with more points this weekend in Brazil. Although failing in its objective to take sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team has recorded an impressive 99 points so far this year, scoring in each of the last eight races. Only the lack of occasional stand-out results, such as the four podiums achieved by Sauber, has prevented it being a stellar season for Force India. Nico Hulkenberg’s move to Sauber next year meanwhile means that this weekend marks the end of one of the closest team-mate battles all season. The German has already won the qualifying war over Paul di Resta, currently holding an 11:8 advantage, and sits seven points ahead in the standings.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Despite failing to score points in Texas, Sauber is sure it can overhaul the 13 point deficit to Mercedes to steal fifth in the Constructors’ Championship at the final hurdle. The fact that Mercedes is currently in a long points drought gives plenty of reason for optimism. Although a return to the podium is unlikely for Sauber here, a fifth and an eighth, or a sixth and a seventh, would be enough to achieve the objective. The drivers have plenty of motivation to get the job done, with Kamui Kobayashi yet to lock in a 2013 drive and Sergio Perez under heavy criticism for not scoring a single point since his McLaren deal was announced five races ago.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Daniel Ricciardo enters the final round of the season trailing team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne but just two points in the championship standings and will be looking to take the 17th position from the Frenchman. The Australian leads the qualifying battle between the pair 15:4, with Vergne out-doing Ricciardo on Saturday in Texas - a 14th place qualifying result his best since the opening round in Australia. THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Williams heads to Brazil having scored two of its three double-points finishes of the season in the last two races. Pastor Maldonado has made Q3 in each of the last three races, and could be a cat among the championship pigeons in the all-important final part of qualifying this weekend. The Interlagos circuit holds happy memories for Williams, with Nico Hulkenberg taking pole here for the team in 2010, and Juan Pablo Montoya taking its second most recent victory in the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix. Bruno Senna meanwhile does not have a deal next season and has plenty to prove in what could be his final Grand Prix.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham is hoping that the often unpredictable nature of the Brazilian Grand Prix will help it snatch back 10th place in the Constructors’ Championship from Marussia this weekend. The team needs a 12th place finish to knock the Russianowned squad from its perch, and will need plenty of reliability issues and incidents for those ahead to complete a successful mission.

Debut: Sakhir, 2010 World Championships: 0 WIns: 0 Pole Positions: 0 Fastest Laps: 0

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... HRT enters the final race of the 2012 season with a cloud hanging over its future. With the reported Qatari buyout of the Thesan Capital owned squad having reportedly hit a snag, there are no guarantees that the team will return next year. On the sporting front, Narain Karthikeyan looks destined to finish ahead of Pedro de la Rosa in the Drivers’ Championship standings thanks to his 15th place finish at Monaco. The Spaniard has, however, out-qualified the Indian 17:2 so far this season - a far greater indication of the relative ability of the two drivers.

PEDRO DE LA ROSA Nationality: Spanish Date of Birth: 24/02/1971 Debut: Albert Park, 1999 World Championships: 0 Wins: 0 Poles: 0 Fastest Laps: 0 Career Highlights: 1997 Formula Nippon F3000 Champion, 1995 Japanese Formula 3 Champion

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham may be hoping to benefit from potential reliability issues for the leading teams during the Brazilian Grand Prix, but there are no guarantees that they will be in front of the Marussias in order to capitalise. Timo Glock and Charles Pic showed the improvement that this team has made in recent races last time out in Texas, out-qualifying and out-racing both Caterhams. If the team can repeat that performance this weekend then the coveted 10th place in the Constructors’ title is, naturally, guaranteed.
