Still the one

I

t has been argued that the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 has lost some of its shine over the last decade.

Yes, the race has become part of the championship, and no longer sits as the ‘Grand Final’ at the end of the racing season. Its Top 10 Shootout qualifying format has lost its exclusivity, and the highly entertaining class battles and low-budget ‘privateer’ entrants are no more. But despite all that, I’m prepared to wager that no one entering the circuit during race week, be they fan, media, driver or crew, will be thinking of the event as ‘Race 20 of the of the V8 Supercars Championship.’ As long as the race continues to be held at Mount Panorama, and the course stretches from Hell Corner to Skyline and back again, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 will be far from ‘just another race’ on the V8 Supercars calendar. You don’t have to understand much about the sport of motor racing to understand that this particular 6.21km ribbon of tarmac is truly one of the world’s great race tracks. When you factor in the immensely rich heritage of the race, and just how spectacular the current cars are across the top of the Mountain, it’s highly unlikely that the Bathurst 1000 will ever be overshadowed by another V8 Supercars event, no matter where the category ventures around the world. Q&A with KEVIN FITZSIMONS

T

yres have been the talk of the V8 Supercars Championship in recent seasons, with the introduction of a softer compound tyre opening up a raft of options for both team strategists and race format makers. While Bathurst will again be the sole domain of the hard tyre in 2011, the Mount Panorama circuit’s extreme loadings ensure that tyres are always a major factor. Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to Dunlop’s V8 Supercars operations manager Kevin Fitzsimons about the role that tyres are likely to play in this year’s Great Race. SPEEDCAFE: Tyres are always a key talking point throughout the Bathurst weekend. Do you have any instructions for the teams heading into this year’s event? KEVIN FITZSIMONS: Our advice is to keep the camber off and be gentle with the tyres on the out lap when they are brand new. Don’t go out and drive them into the ground, just try and gently warm them up – keep the pressure up and the camber off. They put the camber on for qualifying which I understand and then back it off for the race, but often the damage has already been done. They may need to look at it and say these are the qualifying tyres that we’re using and this is what we need for the race. Basically if the pressure is up and the camber is off they hopefully shouldn’t have too many issues – that’s the critical thing. Certainly low cold pressures can hurt the tyres because the vertical loads are so hard. Its like hitting the tyre with a sledgehammer all the time. SPEEDCAFE: Did the track changes a couple of years ago help the tyres? FITZSIMONS: Absolutely. The kerb changes at Turn 2 (Griffins Bend) and the back-filling of the left hand part of The Chase where they head under the bridge, that certainly made a significant difference to the way that’s impacted. As (race director) Tim Schenken says, the race track is between the white lines and whatever happens over the white lines - there’s only the driver to blame. If there’s run off there, they will certainly use it if it gives them an advantage, especially going up the hill

6

(out of Griffins Bend). SPEEDCAFE: There were some rear tyre issues last year, including for the Stone Brothers, Ford Performance Racing and Jamie Whincup (TeamVodafone). Were they set-up related? FITZSIMONS: Possibly… it’s a chicken and egg scenario there. What came first? You don’t know whether it’s due to the set-up of the car or the way some drivers are driving the car, whether it’s how much kerb they’re using, etc. We tried to map it a bit; some drivers had more issues than other drivers did in the same car, so there’s obviously something there to do with the way the tyre’s are driven on. Unfortunately it’s the nature of the beast and if a team has twigged as to what the nature of the problem is, they’re not telling us because they know we’ll tell everyone else. Certainly there was issues with some particular drivers last year where their co-drivers didn’t have any issues at all or had bigger issues. SPEEDCAFE: Craig Lowndes finally knocked off Greg Murphy’s long-standing practice/qualifying lap record last year. Do you think we’ll see someone go even faster in 2011? FITZSIMONS: Records are made to be broken. Craig was out to make a statement last year and he sure as hell did it! But do they (Lowndes and TeamVodafone) need to be doing that now, knowing what’s on the line, knowing how close he is to the championship lead? Does he risk sticking the car in the wall and give the boys a massive night’s work to repair all the bits and pieces? I don’t know. It’s a different mindset that they’re possibly going there with this year compared to what they’ve done in the past. It’s all well and good to be dynamically fast over a lap, if the car is really good and you think you can have a crack comfortably maybe guys will have a go at doing it. But if I was a team owner I’d be raising my eyes a little bit saying concentrate on what we’re here to do, we don’t want to be here all night.

DID YOU KNOW? They’re the form team of endurance racing and following their victory in the L&H 500 at Phillip Island, Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife are chasing an historic back-to-back endurance double at Bathurst. Having won both endurance races last year at Phillip Island and Bathurst, the TeamVodafone duo are trying to become the first men since Peter Brock to clean sweep the traditional endurance races in two successive years. Brock in fact won the Sandown and Bathurst endurance race double three years in a row in 1978, 1979 and 1980, making for a record difficult to beat in the modern era of V8 Supercars. Experience is always a factor in a race such as the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and it’s no surprise that reigning winners Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife have the most to starts their credit with 41 between them. There are a range of combinations who also take a pile of Mount Panorama experience into battle this year however.

12

The Steve Owen/Paul Morris combination has the next most combined starts (30), clear of Steven Johnson/David Besnard (28), Mark Winterbottom/Steve Richards (26), Greg Murphy/Allan Simonsen (25) and four teams with 24 starts between them - James Courtney/Cameron McConville, Warren Luff/Nathan Pretty, Russell Ingall/ Jack Perkins and Paul Dumbrell/Dean Canto.

Race 20 - Bathurst

At the tender age of 17, Mildura-based racer Cameron Waters will break Paul Dumbrell’s record as the youngest-ever driver in the history of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 by just one week. Driving alongside Grant Denyer in Kelly Racing’s Shannons-MARS backed entry, Waters will be one of three rookies on the grid this year. Tim Blanchard will line-up alongside David Reynolds in Kelly’s Stratco Racing Holden while Nick Percat joins Garth Tander for the Toll HRT. A total of 13 co-drivers at this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst1000 will be performing ‘double duty’ and also compete in one of the support categories at Mount Panorama. Seven drivers – Andrew Thompson, David Russell, Nick Percat, Tim Blanchard, David Wall, Jack Perkins and Paul Morris - will also compete in the Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series round at Bathurst. Four drivers – Steve Richards, Craig Baird, Daniel Gaunt and Michael Patrizi – will also compete in the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia, while two drivers – Cameron McConville and Nathan Pretty – will be part of the Auto One V8 Utes field.

The Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series will celebrate a special milestone this year at Bathurst – its 200th race. The second race on Saturday will be the 200th series race since the development category began in 2000. Dean Canto holds the record for the most race wins (21), followed by Steve Owen (16), Paul Dumbrell (15), Owen Kelly (13), Adam Macrow (12), Andrew Thompson (11) and Simon Wills (10).

THE CRAIG LOWNDES GUIDE TO BATHURST DAYTIME: CRAIG ONON BATHURST CRAIG PERTH

Bathurst is a special place for all the drivers, especially myself and I love going back each year. Because it’s a small country town in many ways, the entire place gets behind the event, so it’s always a buzz to be in town at the time. It almost feels like the town has been built around Mt Panorama and the race, and the locals love it.

CRAIG ON THE SUPERCHEAP AUTO BATHURST 1000

The Bathurst 1000 is the biggest event of the year without question and even though it’s part of the championship now, it still means just as much to win the race as it does the championship, for some drivers it means even more. In V8 Supercars land Bathurst is our grand final. The track is incredible, the fans are patriotic and every driver is there to win. No one comes to Bathurst to finish second, so it’s the best race of the year and I’m sure this year will be no different.

EXERCISE OF THE EVENT: ELEVATED SIT-SQUATS Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean you workout schedule needs to suffer. TEAMVODAFONE DRIVER CRAIG LOWNDES shows you the potential of a hotel room/bedroom as a mini-gym with your another exercise in your ‘on the move’ training programme. 1) Place both feet on a bench or 2) Making sure your back stays chair in the push up position. straight; slowly lower yourself down like a normal push up before returning to your starting position.

TECH PREVIEW with

CAMPBELL LITTLE

TECHNICAL by CAMPBELL LITTLE

B

athurst is an incredibly big week for all the teams. There’s four days of track time, and being an endurance event we have more people on the ground than at the regular race meetings. There’s obviously a lot to think about heading into the race itself. The way it unfolds has changed quite a bit in recent years with the new fuel and co-driver rules, so the strategical challenge has certainly evolved. Strategy I think everybody operates under the same basic plan of just positioning themselves to race in the last couple of stints. It used to be Lap 130, but now we really see people going for it from Lap 100 onwards. Last year there was a Safety Car on Lap 57 that really determined people’s strategies. A lot didn’t take it due to their fuel and co-driver windows. Most people hesitated and only four cars, including Karl Reindler and Garth Tander, took it, and it really set both cars up for a strong finish. So the race can be affected really early on. In saying that, if we hadn’t had the

16

final Safety Car for Will Davison, then I think we would have seen a very different outcome (due to the leaders running very close to running out of fuel). It’s just a day of being on your game. Last year if we had of seen a couple of other cars take the Lap 57 Safety Car, then I don’t think we’d have seen Triple Eight do it as easily as they did. But like Skaifey (Mark Skaife) 10 years ago, I think if they (TeamVodafone) put their hand down a toilet they’d come up with a gold watch at the moment, but that will change eventually. Fuel in-hand If you get caught up early in the day at Bathurst, you can really catch back up with a Safety Car. If you have fuel in-hand at the last pitstop, you can jump to the front, so you really can’t write-off anybody. Look at Tander last year - with two hours to go he was nowhere, and he ended up on the podium. Now that it’s a six and a half tank race (with the E85 fuel introduced in 2009) it gives you fairly good windows. When we were all aiming for four stops,

Race 20 - Bathurst

you had a window of two laps and the only thing that could improve that was Safety Cars. So some people just drove their cars until they ran out of fuel in order to get through on four. But now with the fuel window opening up, and the refuelling rate being slower than it was a few years ago as well, taking the opportunity to refuel under Safety Car is far more important due to the advantage of having fuel in-hand at the next stop. If you enter pitlane in a train of cars but you have half a tank left and the others are almost dry, you’ll file back onto the track 15 seconds in front. So that’ll have a big effect on the outcome of the race, for sure. It means you really can’t write anybody off. The fact that you have to share a pit-boom between your two cars is always a concern as well, and can affect what you decide to do in the stop if you’ve got another car queuing. Tyres What we saw at Phillip Island was that a lot of people, including us, tested a qualifying run on green practice tyres, but then when we used the greens from the Phillip Island tyre allocation (a new batch of the same tyre, which will also be used at Bathurst), the balance was completely different. That then changed the game for the race, because we were trying to cure all this

understeer that we had and we ended up hurting the rear tyres in the race. Bathurst hasn’t been hard on tyre wear historically - tyres that you take away from there, even if they’ve done a lot of kilometres, aren’t tortured. So they’re not overworked, but we have seen a lot of failures due to kerbs and also the side loadings, which are the biggest we see all year. There’s a lot of kerb striking and heavy landings across the top which can bring you undone. We had a tyre go last year with Luke (Youlden) driving, and three laps later we heard (Jamie) Whincup on the radio complaining that he was having the same problem. But that was one tyre out of eight sets that we had a failure with, while some teams had tyre after tyre go. It’s hard to say why certain teams were having the problems they had without knowing their cambers or starting pressures. Typically you see people running the gauntlet with the tyres, because there’s a fair amount of difference between the camber and pressure settings that Dunlop suggest with those needed to be competitive. Dunlop might suggest teams run the front at around 4.5 degrees and 32psi, but what we see is people wanting to run them at about 7 degrees and 28psi, which puts them into dangerous territory.

17

Race Guide

TECHNICAL by CAMPBELL LITTLE

The whole thing is really a balancing match, and there’s a clear trade-off to be had between the camber and pressures. If you run the higher cambers you can get away with a very different pressure range on the tyre, because the contact patch is different. Usually on the front you see the lower the camber the higher the pressure you can run, and vice versa. We saw quite a few people having their tyres drop off very quickly during their stints at Phillip Island, as well as cars coming on really strong late in the stints. We may well see that at Bathurst too because of the different characteristic of the new tyres, but that’s something we’ll have to work around when we get there, because we really don’t know. We get eight sets of tyres for the weekend, and with six or seven stops in the race now days, we need everyone of those eight sets. How many brand

18

new sets that people end up bringing into the race will certainly be something to watch, as there’s a temptation to use set after set for qualifying. Contenders Outside of the TeamVodafone cars, I honestly think that Mark (Winterbottom) and Steve (Richards) will be in pretty good shape. Nick Percat did a fantastic job with Garth Tander at Phillip Island, and the HRT cars are usually strong at Bathurst. Van Giz (Shane van Gisbergen) and Johnny Mac (John McIntyre) did a great job as well at Phillip Island, so they’ll be in the mix. Garry’s cars (Garry Rogers Motorsport) should be strong at Bathurst again, the Kellys (Jack Daniel’s Racing) will be better than they were last year and you shouldn’t discount Greg Murphy here either. It’s going to be a great race.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Both Tander and Percat showed great pace at Phillip Island, with the youngster arguably the star of the weekend. The car’s speed was inconsistent however - running out of tyres in the final stint. Car #2 looms as the most likely to knock off the dominant TeamVodafone regardless.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY D’Alberto will be fired up after missing Phillip Island with the chicken pox. Both D’Alberto and Wood have enough starts at Bathurst to know their way around, while the car showed decent speed on the hard tyre at Phillip Island. Can snag a top 10 if everything falls into place.

#4 IRWIN / Stone Brothers Racing ALEX DAVISON

THE BAGMAN’S SAY While both drivers have strong endurance racing backgrounds, car #4 has struggled for speed both at the recent L&H 500 and at last year’s Bathurst. While likely to finish higher than they qualify, a top 10 will be a good result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Winterbottom and FPR have been incredibly fast at Bathurst in recent years. The Orrcon Falcon sits alongside the #2 HRT car as the most likely to push TeamVodafone, despite being slightly off the pace at Phillip Island. Richards has a wealth of experience which could shine through on Sunday.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The Davison/Youlden entry overshadowed car #5 at Phillip Island - taking pole and a fine podium finish. Didn’t have the tyre life to match the Vodafone Holdens in the race, but will again challenge for the podium at Bathurst. Youlden will take great confidence from Phillip Island, where he matched it with the best of the co-drivers.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Ironically, the fact that the Jack Daniel’s cars were off the pace at Phillip Island could be a positive heading to Bathurst, with the cars having been fast at the Island but slow on the Mountain last year. Russell hasn’t had many B1000 starts but has done a lot of laps in the Fujitsu Series. Another car looking at the top 10.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Bright was dynamite here last year, topping Friday qualifying before charging from outside the top 10 to fourth in the final stint of the race. Jones wasn’t as fast as some expected at Phillip Island, which may require Bright to triple-stint home if the car is going to have a winning chance.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Tyre issues hurt this car badly in the closing stages as Phillip Island, as well as at Bathurst last year. If those issues can be sorted, this Kiwi pairing is a clear podium chance. Odds of victory will shorten dramatically if weather arrives on Sunday.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Both drivers are highly experienced at Bathurst, with Murphy seemingly always fighting for a top five spot at the end of 161 laps. Simonsen wasn’t outstanding at Phillip island, but is expected to improve for Bathurst. Repeating last year’s top six finish in the PMM car would be a great result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY This team was thoroughly unconvincing at Bathurst in 2010, but it would be no surprise to see Rick and Owen Kelly on the podium this weekend. Tyre life was an issue last year, and at the recent L&H 500, while Owen Kelly is one of the safest, if not quite the fastest, codrivers. Will be in the top six barring disaster.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Many are looking forward to seeing Reynolds attack Bathurst in qualifying, with the Stratco Commodore looming as a Shootout contender. Seemed destined for the podium before Davison’s crash here last year. Car is an outside chance of the top five, pending Blanchard’s form in his maiden 1000 outing.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY While the team is likely to prove that its Phillip Island disaster was a one-off, the DJR FGs have lacked the outright pace needed to score a podium on the Mountain over the last two years. This is a strong pairing however, and should contend for a top six finish.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Despite Webb’s experience at the circuit, which includes dominant wins in the Fujitsu Series races, the Mother Falcon won’t see the top 10 on speed this year. Lyons scored a top five here in his last start, but that was four years ago and getting up to speed in time for Sunday will be a big task.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY This pairing was one of the standouts at Bathurst last year, with a combination of solid driving and inspired strategy only undone by tyre issues in the final stint. Will be looking for a top 10 this year, but is highly unlikely to achieve that based on raw speed.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Luff again proved that he can do the job in a good car at Bathurst last year, but doesn’t have the same opportunity to shine in his current environment. A lead lap finish will be a great result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY This car was the strongest non-Vodafone car at Bathurst in 2010, and is expected to be again on the pace despite sitting outside the top 10 in the championship. Ritter moves over from the #34 entry to partner Holdsworth this year and continues to prove his class as a twice-per-year driver

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Both Caruso and Marshall have extensive Bathurst experience. The #34 entry may not have the outright pace of the #33, but a top 10 finish would be no surprise.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The #47 Falcon was off the pace at Phillip Island eliminating any momentum built by Slade’s brilliant run at the previous event in Ipswich. Gaunt has only one previous Bathurst 1000 start, but has been a standout in this year’s Carrera Cup. Speed of this car is very hard to predict, especially considering last year’s struggles

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Excellent record at the Mount and did a strong job alongside Whincup last year, so knows what a Triple Eight designed VE should feel like at Bathurst. Morris has kept sharp via the Fujitsu Series but wasn’t among the fastest co-drivers at Phillip island. One of many potential top 10 contenders.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY This car had a horror run in the L&H 500, with qualifying speed let down by incidents with both drivers at the wheel. Dumbrell has proven exceptionally fast at Bathurst in previous years, and will be fired up for a strong result in his final 1000 as a full-time driver. An outside chance for the top five.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Both Kiwis have poor records at Bathurst, which weren’t helped by last year’s spectacular Lap 1 disaster. This entry is unlikely to make the top 10 shootout, but a trouble free run in the race will see the car close to the top 10.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Although one of the most publicised entries in the race, Denyer and reality television show winning Waters should be aiming just to finish considering the former’s lack of recent seat time and the latter’s experience deficit. Should qualify slowest, so any finishing position will be a good result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Whincup has been in Lowndes’ shadow at Bathurst since joining Triple Eight, and will be super determined to change that this weekend. Thompson’s wet weather form is a concern, but his performance in dry conditions should be sound. This car is a big chance to win.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY This pair deserves to be the overwhelming favourites after winning here last year and at Phillip Island recently. Will be pushed all the way by the Whincup/Thompson entry, but it would be foolish to bet against Lowndes if the race comes down to a straight fight in the closing stages.
