The new Camry takes on a more aggressive a muscular look from the front bumper and grille back to the sculpted rear end with its built in spoiler on the trunk lid.

David Dewhurst photo

The 2015 Toyota Camry pricing ranges from $23,795, including the destination charge for the four-cylinder LE to $32,195 for the XSE and XLE. Hybrid pricing ranges from $27,615 for the LE to $30,805 for the XLE Hybrid.

2015 Toyota Camry By Barbara & Bill Schaffer Feature Writers

F

or the last 12 years the Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in the United States and for good reason – it’s an outstanding family sedan. However, it’s never been one of our favorites because it’s always seemed a bit bland and unexciting to us – but that was the old Camry. Toyota designers realized that the Camry design needed excitement, so for 2015 to address competitors like the Nissan Altima, Chrysler 200, Volkswagen Passat, Kia Optima and Ford Fusion, the all-new 2015 Toyota Camry received a complete redesign. The result is a collection of bold new Camr y sedans. The new Camry takes on a more aggressive and muscular look from the front bumper and grille to the sculpted rear end with its built-in spoiler on the trunk lid. While not revolutionary, the new design is distinctive and a much needed move for Toyota. Sleek headlights with available LED lowand high-beams create the eyes of the new Camry face and a wide vertical bar of LED daytime running accent low and outside the broad grille area help define the new mid-size Toyota look. With the exception of the roof, the Camry is new and improved and includes more than 2,000 new parts. And unlike many manufacturers who are adding more chrome, the new Camry uses the shiny stuff sparingly. The new interior is simple, attractive and well organized, especially around the seven-inch touch screen at the top of the center stack. We’d like to see the screen a bit higher up the center stack for better sideways glance visibility, but at this level it’s easier to make the touch screen commands. Climate controls are just below the screen and use traditional knobs and buttons. Like many other cars, the new Camry has a 4.2-inch TFT screen between the tachometer and speedometer which displays a w ide range of vehicle functions and it coordinates with the multimedia system to display audio, navigation, warnings and communications. It’s a lso net worked w it h t he direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System so you can see at a glance the pressure in each tire. The interior is also more upscale than previous generations and we like that most surfaces were soft-touch materials, which give the car a richer feel.

We spent about an hour driving the 2015 Camr y at a recent press introduction in Seattle and noticed the car seems to have a st if fer body st r ucture which a l lowed engineers to var y the suspension tuning bet ween models. Our driv ing route was mostly urban and freeway, so it was difficult to get a good read on the new handling, but around town the SE model we drove felt agile and the suspension produced a smooth com for table r ide. T he most not iceable change, however, was the quieter interior Camry handling appears to be an increasingly i m p or t a nt c on s i d e r a t i on t o y ou n g e r shoppers. Toyota says 45 percent of the Camry customers have picked the sporty SE model, and on average the SE owner is about 12 years younger than the other Camry customers. For 2015, Toyota builds on the SE model adding an even sharper-handling model the XSE grade. It has more precise suspension tuning, 18-inch wheels and added luxury features. Both the SE and XSE levels have steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that are programed for faster, sportier shifts when in the transmission’s “S” mode and “blip” the engine during downshifts to match the transmission speed. The new Camry is available in seven trim levels, including the LE, SE and XLE hybrids. Sporty versions of the gas-powered Camry are the SE and XSE, while regular models include the LE and XLE. The basic engine in the gasoline-only models is the 178-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic transmission. It gets an EPA rating of 25-mpg city and 35-mpg highway. The larger 2015 Toyota Camry engine is the DOHC 268-hp 3.5-liter V-6 with a six-speed automatic transmission which produces an EPA fuel economy rating of 21/31mpg and a 5.8 second 0 to 60 mph time. Both of the engines are Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual V V T-i) which controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust ca msha f ts. T he Ca m r y is get t i ng good performance and fuel economy from this engine so they haven’t seen the need to switch to something like turbocharged four-cylinder, direct injection and automatic transmissions with seven-, eight or nine-speeds like most other manufacturers. The Camry Hybrid Synerg y Drive pairs a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine with a small high-torque electric motor to produce a combined 200 horsepower. It uses a unique transaxle and continuously variable

The combination produces a respectable 7.6-second 0 to 60 mph time and EPA estimated fuel economy of 43 mpg city, 39 mpg highway and 41 mpg combined. The 2015 Camry is offered with most of the latest electronic safety equipment including P re-Col l ision System, Adapt ive Cr u ise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Auto High Beam Lane Departure Alert, and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The airbag count is now 10 and includes a driver’s and front seat passenger’s knee airbag. T he X L E g rade ha s a sta nda rd Sa fet y Connect telematics system (with a one-year complementary trial subscription), which adds Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. Entertainment in the 2015 Camry is provided by a new Entune Multimedia system which includes a display screen with access to the subscription-free App Suite. The available HD Radio system includes iTunes tagging

and SiriusX M Satellite Radio (with a 90day complimentary trial). Camry also has standard Bluetooth wireless connection, USB port and iPod integration. Top models can be ordered with a Premium HDD Navigation system with Entune and JBL GreenEdge audio system. The system includes mobile apps for Bing, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable, and Pandora, plus new apps can be added as they are developed. Hybrid pricing ranges from $27,615 for the LE to $30,805 for the XLE Hybrid. Toyota has moved beyond the era of bland with an exciting new mid-size sedan that will thrill shoppers and send the competitors scrambling. The Honda CR-V is the best-selling SUV over the last decade; in fact, it's the best-selling entry-SUV of all time.

2015 Honda CR-V By Bill Schaffer Feature Writer

I

would guess that when most people are asked, “What was the best-selling SUV/crossover in the United States last year?” the answers would include Escape, Equinox, RAV4, Highlander or Explorer. The correct answer is Honda CR-V. Honda’s sales leadership is even more impressive when you consider that Honda doesn’t do fleet sales like most brands do.

The Honda CR-V was also the best-selling SUV over the last decade; in fact, it’s the best-selling entry-SUV of all time. That’s why the introduction of a 2015 CR-V is such a major, minor model change – Honda doesn’t want to mess with success, but they need to push ahead to maintain their leadership. It’s a conundrum. The significant exterior styling changes are in the front and rear of the 2015 Honda CR-V where the new grille treatment integrates the headlights creating a broad wing-like shape (some may say horns) with a multi-tone grille. The bumper and lower fascia have a horizontal look with more dimension and chrome. In the rear, other chrome accents and a metallic-looking inset below the bumper add to the sophisticated look.

Submitted photo

The 2015 CR-V pricing starts at $24,250, including the destination charge for the front-wheel drive LX and goes up to $33,600 for the new Touring trim level with all-wheel drive.

The basic shape of the 2015 Honda CR-V remains the same. A quick glance at the sides of 2014 and 2015 models looks about same, except for the wheels, which are turbine-like on the new model. Inside, the dash changes are subtle conveying further refinement with a faux stitched treatment on the dash along with a sculpted look on some other surfaces. The perforated leather seats give the interior a more tailored appearance, too. But the most noticeable change is the center console which has a sliding arm rest and a compartmentalized storage area that can be configured for personal needs. My driving partner noticed that the original-size Apple iPad fit nicely in the top of the console and worked like a top for the compartment with a small gap at the ends. I wonder if that was intentional or an interesting coincidence? Another feature that caught his attention was that the sun visors now slide to help block the sun – those that don’t are one of his pet peeves. One of the most significant changes is the Earth Dream Technology engine and transmission. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine now has direct-injection and as a result picks up 18 more pound-feet of torque with the same 181 horsepower. The five-speed automatic transmission has been swapped for a new Continuously Variable Transmission. Buff magazines that do testing say the new combination is about a half second quicker than the 2014 model with a 0 to 60 mph time of 8.6 seconds. The EPA says Earth Dreams Technology makes a four-mpg improvement in city driving and a three-mpg improvement on the highway and combined figures. The EPA rates the latest front-wheel drive CR-V at 27-mpg city, 34-mpg highway and 29-mpg combined. The AWD version is one mile per gallon less across the board. Honda Sensing safety system is new this year adding a suite of the latest safety technologies. Honda Sensing integrates Lane Keeping Assist System and a Collision Mitigation Braking System that will warn the driver of the impending collision with a pedestrian at speeds up to 40 mph. If a collision is unavoidable the system will brake to help avoid or lessen damage. The system also includes the first CR-V adaption of Adaptive Cruise Control.

Inside, the dash changes are subtle conveying further refinement with a faux stitched treatment on the dash along with a sculpted look on some other surfaces. The perforated leather seats give the interior a more tailored appearance, too.

The 2015 Honda CR-V has the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering frontbody structure which helps absorb frontal crashes. Honda engineers made more than 60 structural changes to stiffen the body structure and collision performance. A fourth and upper-end trim level has been added to the CR-V lineup for 2015, too. The new Touring edition steps up from the EX-L adding navigation, a new power tailgate and the new Honda Sensing suite of safety and convenience features, along with larger wheels, HomeLink remote, and projector headlights. For even better value, the mid-level EX version gets about $1,400 in added standard content including 10-way power driver’s seats, heated front seats, Honda LaneWatch, push-button start and LED daytime running lights. Honda has switched the navigation/audio system to a new seven-inch capacitive touch screen display for all models except the LX trim. It works like a smart phone or tablet – for example, you can make adjustments by swiping a finger across the screen to move the image, or pinching the screen with two fingers to reduce the map size. The same screen is used for the backup system and allows the driver to select different views – wide, normal and down. I was sorry to see that the volume knob was eliminated in favor of a toggle-type button on the unit; however, it’s easy to make audio changes and adjustments using the redundant controls on the steering wheel. It’s also possible to use the voice command system to make changes – although I admit I still find that challenging. I assume that an owner who uses the system everyday will be more adept. The 2015 CR-V pricing starts at $24,250, including the destination charge for the front-wheel drive LX and goes up to $33,600 for the new Touring trim level with all-wheel drive. When selected, all-wheel drive adds $1,250 to all models. I like the way Honda does its pricing; you buy the trim level that suits your needs and budget – you don’t buy a level and then have to add a bunch of options. I think it makes the shopping process much simpler and less stressful.

Drivers won’t find the new CR-V much different than the previous generation. It’s a bit smoother, quieter and refined, driving more like a car than an SUV. There’s no wallowing or sway on corners, rather it feels flat and well balanced. The steering is precise and changes made to the brakes produce a firmer more confident pedal feel.

Federally Insured by NCUA

Over the last 19 years, more than 2.3-million U.S. drivers have invested in the Honda CR-V and for 2015, Honda hasn’t messed with the formula; it’s just a new and improved version of the most popular SUV in the country. -- Courtesy of Auto Digest.

GMC Yukon Denali By Barbara & Bill Schaffer Feature Writers

port behind the screen. It’s a perfect place to charge electronic devices and hide wallets while stowing them out of sight.

T

he new GMC Yu kon Dena li is a big deal – literally. At 204 inches i n leng t h, it ’s on l y a sm idgen (1.9-inches) longer than the previous model, but anything that fills a bay of our garage so completely is big, especially when the last car in that slot was a 145-inch electric car.

The GMC design team should get a gold star -- the Denali is sleeker and more aerodynamic than the previous generations. In the rear, the lightweight aluminum liftgate has a fullwidth window that can be opened separately from the lift gate. There is also a new overhead wiper that hides under the roof-level spoiler for better protection and a cleaner look.

There’s no denying that the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali is a beauty, especially inside. It’s spacious, elegantly designed and swathed w ith soft leathers, high-qua lit y plastics, aluminum and authentic Java Burl Poplar wood accents. Our Denali test vehicle was designed to carry four in luxury sedan-like comfort and three more snuggly in a third row. The Yukon can actually be configured to carry nine people when equipped with all bench seats.

Retractable running boards are a "must-have" option. With the exception of a chrome face, the illuminated full-length power-retractable assist steps fold and hide completely under the vehicle but deploy when any door opens. The step has a broad rubber surface that provides one of the best entry surfaces we’ve used on an SUV. The GMC Denali model gets a 420-hp, 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 w it h a si x-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.2 seconds, which is quite impressive for a vehicle that weighs nearly three tons. The four-wheel drive version has an EPA fuel economy rating of 14 mpg city, 21 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined. We actually averaged 15.3 mpg during a week of mixed driving. One of the reasons these large SUVs are so popular is their ability to pull heavy loads, and the Denali 4WD fits the job description with towing capacity of 8,100 pounds.

Cargo capacity is 15.3 cubic feet with all three rows of seating in use and can be expanded to a massive 94.7 cubic feet when the second and third rows of seat backs are folded. The Yukon is one of the last big SUVs to get optional power folding seats, but now that they are offered, they are probably the best and fastest in the business. The seats can easily be adjusted by pushing buttons at entry points located at the second row doors and at the rear liftgate opening. The GMC Denali instruments have a large custom i zable screen mou nted bet ween the chrome bezels of the tachometer and speedometer. The console area has multiple storage compa r t ment s, USB por t s a nd electrical plugs to fit the needs of those addicted to mobile electronics.

A f ter a week in t he Dena li, we’d grow n accustomed to the size, luxury, performance and technologies and hated to give it back. The new more aerodynamic design cuts vehicle noise as does the laminated windshield and front door glass. The upper level models also use an active noise cancellation system which works similar to the one used by the Bose noise canceling headsets many airline passengers use. Overall, this is one of the quietest SUVs we’ve driven.

GMC’s IntelliLink communications package uses the eight-inch touch screen at the top of the center stack. The system provides great communications, navigation, entertainment and is the forum for OnStar features; however, it seemed slow to us, acting like it had a bad case of turbo lag. Later in the model year, the systems will offer a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot for vehicle passengers’ personal digital devices. The nice thing is it will be powered by the vehicle and won’t need a smart phone link. The system will also have a selection of apps that will provide all sorts of extra useful and entertaining features.

The new Third Generation Magnetic Ride Control, which is standard on the Denali models, is fantastic. This is the same basic suspension used on some of the world’s best handling cars including the Chevy Corvette. It’s the world’s fastest-acting suspension and it’s able to deliver a more precise body motion control. It “reads” the road ever y millisecond and changes damping in just 10-15 milliseconds in shocks filled with a magneto-rheological fluid containing minute iron particles. Under the presence of magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide a

that’s what OnStar is for. The OnStar system also has a new app that will allow the owner to open the car from his or her smart phone.

Because the big SUVs have been popular targets for thieves, both brands are offered w it h a sophisticated new safet y system designed to deter thefts. It has glass breakage sensors, motion detectors and a self-leveling inclination detector that sounds the alarm when someone attempts to tow or lift the vehicle. There’s also a feature that blocks access for someone breaking in using a “slimjim” unlocking device. 2015.5 Volvo V60 T6 R-Design By Barbara & Bill Schaffer Feature Writers

I

t’s been 15 years since Ford ag reed to buy t he Volvo automot ive company and subsequently i t ’s b e e n r e s o l d t o t h e Chinese automaker Geeley. Vol v o s u r v i v e d t h r ou g h t he t ra nsit ions w it h few c h a nge s to t he pr o duc t lineup especially in recent years, but during the last year we’ve been seeing signs of a renaissance. The most sig nif ica nt cha nge ca me last yea r w it h t he i nt roduct ion of a ne w d r ivet r a i n l i neup w i t h h i g h - t e c h f o u rc y l i nder en g i ne s c a l le d Drive-E and an eight-speed autom at ic t r a n sm i s sion . Volvo s ay s t he y pla n to convert all their vehicles to four-cylinder engines in a va r iet y of con f ig u rat ions that will include the use of turbochargers, belt-driven superchargers, hybrids and diesels. We’ve driven some of Drive-E cars and thought t he fou r-c yl i nder eng i ne w it h bot h a supercha rger and turbocharger had nearly as much power as the sixcylinder cars. Following the new drivetrains was the reintroduction of the Volvo V60 wagon to the U.S. market and we recently had a chance to sa mple one of t he top models, the 2015.5 Volvo V60 T6 R-Design. In addition to the Drive-E models, the current lineup still includes inline five- and si x-cylinder turbocharged eng ines for t he a l l-wheel d r i v e v er sion s, l i k e t he V6 0 T 6 R-D e sig n mo del we tested. T h i s spor t ier model is equipped w ith a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine w ith Polesta r per forma nce sof t w a re upg r ade w h ich produces a n ent husiast ic 325-hp. A lthough not at the same per for ma nce level of t he German cars enhanced by inhouse tuners, the R-Design still accelerates quickly from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds with virtually no turbo lag when the throttle is applied. The EPA rates fuel economy for this model at 19-mpg city, 28-mpg highway and 22-mpg combined. We averaged 21.4 mpg during a week of mixed driving. C ombi ne d w it h a qu ic k shifting si x-speed

“G e a r t r o n i c ” a u t o m a t i c transmission, which can be manually shifted with the ste er i ng w he el-mou nte d padd le sh i f ter s, t he V6 0 is a joy to drive especially on the w inding mountain road s nea r ou r home i n southern Washington state. T he ha nd l i ng i s pre c i se and controlled, but not as sporty as similar competitive models we’ve tested. The new Electrica l Power Steering Assist is accurate and gives the driver good f e e d b a c k a n d i t ’s a l s o adjustable in the upper-level models. Front MacPherson st r ut a nd mu lt i l i n k rea r suspension y ield a sol id, c ont r ol le d r ide w it h no harshness and only modest body lean. New car shoppers seem to have a love or hate response to wagons – we happen to be in t he “love” colu m n. The Volvo V60 design has a dramatic coupe-like roofline that sweeps back and down to the rear liftgate. The front end has a long hood line that fol lows t he cla ssic Volvo grille w ith the traditional d iagona l ba r. T he lower section of the front end has a wide, lower air inlet accented w it h a c ont r a st i ng g r ay trim. The light pods have a single projector beam and there’s a straight bar of LED day time running lights in the lower corners of the front end optically defining the 60 series Volvo. The overall look is very dramatic. Volvo has always been one of our favorite cars for road trips because the seats are so c om for t able a nd V6 0 is reinforcing t hat option w it h its sof t leat her a nd well-bolstered design. The second-row seat back in the V60 is split 40/20/40 to extend cargo space as necessar y. Each of the three pieces easily folds to create a flat load floor and the rear-seat headrests can be folded electrica lly from a switch on the center stack . Ma x i mu m ca rgo capacity is 43.8 cubic feet. The V60 interior has a strong S c a nd i n a v i a n i n f lue nc e with simple clean lines and abundant brushed-chrome accent s. T he desig ners clustered a l l t he but tons on a si ng le center st ack panel which looks good but we discovered with all the buttons so close toget her it r e qu i r e d t a k i n g y ou r eyes of f t he road to f ind t he appropr iate but ton –

The Volvo V60 design has a dramatic coupe-like roofline that sweeps back and down to the rear liftgate. perhaps f a m i l ia r it y w i l l make the task easier. We did like the position of the highmounted sta nda rd seveninch display screen used for the infotainment system but thought the system was a bit slow responding. S a fet y h a s a l w a y s b e en a pi n nacle of t he Volvo automotive philosophy and this latest model has all the latest technologies available. Standard on all V60s is City Sa fet y wh ich is desig ned to mitigate collisions with a veh icle a head wh i le traveling at speeds of 31 mph or less. When it determines a collision is likely, it precha rges t he bra kes or automatically brakes to avoid a rear-end collision or lessen the impact. Also standard are rain sensor wipers, Dynamic S t a b i l i t y a n d Tr a c t i o n Control, Roll Stability Control a nd C or ner i n g Tr a c t ion C ont r ol t h r ou g h Torque Vectoring. Volvo was one of the pioneers of the Blind Spot Information technology and we’ve always t hou g ht t h at s hou ld b e among the standard features, but Volvo packages it in a $ 900 package w it h Cross Traffic Alert, front and rear park alert and Lane Change Merge Aid. One other feature we think should be standard is the much needed backup camera, only available with Convenience Package option which is $1,000 to $1,500 extra depending on the model. T h e o p t i o n a l ( $ 1, 5 0 0 ) Technology Package on the T6 (standard on the Platinum trim) adds adaptive cruise, collision warning (including pedestrian and cyclist) with full auto-braking, Distance Alert, Driver Alert Control, Lane Departure Warning, active high beam and ability to read sig n i n for mat ion system that actually reads the speed limit signs.

The front end has a long hood line that follows the classic Volvo grille with the traditional diagonal bar. The lower section of the front end has a wide lower air inlet accented with a contrasting gray trim. All the V60 models come with a standard new telematics system wh ich i ncludes a driver-activated SOS button, automat ic col l ision a ler t and GPS location tracking by emergency operators. If an airbag or seatbelt preten sioner i s deployed, a c a l l a ut om a t ic a l l y g o e s into the operators even if no one presses the button. The system also has remote engine start, trip log and nav igat ion direct ions accessibility from a cloudbased service using the car’s rooftop antenna. The system creates a Wi-Fi 3G-based Hotspot for passengers to connect their smartphones, laptops and tablets to the Internet. The ser vices can a lso be accessed f rom a smartphone using a Volvo app. T he 2015.5 Volvo V6 0 i s a v a i l a b l e i n e i g ht t r i m levels including t he fourcylinder Drive-E, Premier a nd Plat i nu m models which have base prices of $36,675; $38,575 and $42,225 respectively including the de st i n at ion ch a r ge. Used car buying made easy By Tresa Erickson Feature Writer

N

ew vehicles are great, but unlike homes, they begin to depreciate in value the moment they are driven off the lot. Because of that fact, some people prefer to buy used. With a thorough inspection and detailing, used vehicles can be just as nice as new ones on the showroom floor. If the time has come for you to buy a vehicle and you’re focusing on used ones, here are some tips to make your purchase easier. Determine first what kind of vehicles you are interested in. Are you looking for a truck, SUV or car? What models appeal to you? What features appeal to you? Research and compare vehicles online. Keep in mind that the more popular the vehicle, the harder it will be to find used. Be flexible and consider similar models. Review your budget. Do you have a lot of cash on hand? Used is a great choice, particularly if you have enough to pay for the vehicle outright. If you can’t afford the whole kit and caboodle, a healthy down payment will make it easier to find a good loan. When it comes to financing, shop around. Don’t assume the dealership is your best option. It might not offer financing, and even if it does, you might not qualify for it or like the terms. A bank loan might provide you with better rates, especially if you have a good credit rating and a good down payment. Once you have an idea of what you want and can afford, you can start the shopping. Don’t leave a stone unturned in your search for a used vehicle. Check out all of the possibilities from dealerships to private parties. Browse the classified and dealership ads. Check bulletin board and online listings. Keep an eye out for sale signs on vehicles. Take a cruise through major dealership and independent car lots. Get a feel for what’s out there before you consider making any offers. When you have a list of prospects, take the time to check them out. Find out as much as you can about each possibility by obtaining a vehicle history report. This will provide you with an extensive review of the history of the vehicle, such as whether the odometer has been rolled back. Ask for a copy of the service records as well. That way, you can see how well the vehicle has been maintained. Never buy a vehicle without a few test drives. Bring along

someone who knows about vehicles and listen closely as you start up the engine. Go for a drive during the day and see how the vehicle handles. Does it run smoothly? Does it have enough room, in particular headroom and legroom? Does it feel right? You should check out the condition of the interior and exterior as well. Damage there could mean damage in the mechanics. Should you suspect there are issues, trust your instincts. More than likely, there are problems, and to be certain, you should arrange to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic. Even if everything seems fine, you might still want to have the vehicle checked out by a mechanic. If you are really concerned about getting a lemon, you might want to look into purchasing a certified used car. These typically cost more, but they have been thoroughly inspected at the dealership and often come with a warranty. When you have found a vehicle you like and are ready to make an offer, be prepared to haggle. Make a low offer, somewhere in the ballpark, to show that you are serious. Then get ready to wheel and deal. Know how much the vehicle is worth and how much you are willing to pay for it, and should you reach either limit, back out. Be patient but firm. Don’t exceed your budget or fall for other pitches like an extended warranty. If the salesperson gets

Yukon Danali from page 5

too pushy, walk away. There are other dealerships offering quality selection and service. Insist on a contract when the price negotiations are done and take the time to review it carefully. Know what you are getting into before you sign on the dotted line. If there is repair work to be done, get it in writing. If you are buying the car outright, make sure you get the title and the previous owners have signed it. Buying a used vehicle is not a decision to rush into. Take your time, do your homework, and with any luck, there won’t be any surprises.

at risk of colliding with another vehicle. The 2015 GMC Yukon Denali pricing starts at $ 64,670, including the destination charge, for the two-wheel drive version. Four-wheel drive adds $3,000. With all the available options, the price can go to the mid-$70,000s. For a little more room the Denali XL, which is about 22- inches longer, is $2,700 more. On the other end of the spectrum, the GMC Yukon pricing starts at $47,330. GMC has put a lot of thought and planning into the new Yukon and the results are impressive. -- Courtesy of Auto Digest.

Sof Tex is designed to hold up to h ig h fa m i ly t ra f f ic with better spill and wear resista nce, plus it weighs about half as much as leather. We have a lways preferred

T h e R AV4 l o o k s g r e a t and shows a high level of soph i st ic at ion. T he on ly criticism we would have is -- it could use a little more power. For the average owner it will be perfect, but for a more aggressive driver, or someone who lives at higher elevations, or carries a lot of passengers or cargo, it might feel a bit underpowered. 2015 Dodge Challenger By Barbara & Bill Schaffer Feature Writers

T

he a rriva l of t he new 2015 Dodge Challenger goes a long way toward prov ing Tim Kunisk is’s point t hat “Dodge is becoming a performance brand.” Kuniskis, the president and CEO of Dodge and SRT, made that comment while introducing the new Dodge Challenger to a group of automotive journalists in Portland, Oregon. The “performance” claim is backed by a gathering of engines, platform architecture and interior appointments that combine to create the 2015 Dodge Challenger, which is one of the most exciting new muscle cars in automotive history. Da ng ling t he idea of a 707-horsepower Hellcat engine in front of anyone who knows anything about cars will make them sit up and take notice or at least make their right foot twitch. Of course, few will actually spend the $60,000 plus to put a Hellcat in their garage, but when you look down the list of other available engines, there is a lot of other horsepower to be excited about. The new Challenger actually has a model for nearly every budget. There are 10 models from the SXT through the R/T variations, the Scat Packs, the SRTs and of course the star of the line, the SRT Hellcat. Base prices run from as low as $27,990, including the destination charge, for the SRT to $38,490 for a 6.4-liter Scat Pack to as high as $60,990 for the SRT Hellcat. And to make the prices even more appealing, Dodge officials say the 2015 base model Challenger has nearly $4,000 in added content over the 2014 model. The Challenger’s design closely emulates t he origina l 1971 Cha llenger model but with a smoother, more tailored look, a more aggressive front fascia and larger power-bulge (aluminum) hood. Quad projector headlights w ith LED halo rings that peek out from under a more pronounced brow to give it a distinctive daytime signature. Hellcat models also have extra air extractors on the hood and ram-air intakes through the driver-side parking lamp. The interiors are appointed with more upscale features and higher-quality materials than previously seen in Challenger models. All the cars have a high level of standard features and each model up the price ladder obviously gets more. Mid- and upper-level models have additional available equipment packages too, adding popular new technologies like parking aids, blind-spot monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, remote start, rain sensitive wipers, automatic cruise control and Forward Collision Warning.

The Challenger has the available Dodge Uconnect and navigation system with the 8.4-inch touch screen. This system has become one of our favorites in the industry. T he touch-screen icons a re la rge, wel l organized and Hellcat fast -- when you touch an icon it reacts instantly, not like some systems that seem to think about it first. The SRT models have standard performance pages built into the Uconnect system. The screens provide drivers with performance st at ist ic i nclud i ng dy na m ic ha nd l i ng , braking, engine horsepower, engine torque and acceleration. The information can then be saved to a USB memory stick or uploaded online to the Mopar Owners Connect page where it can be shared with others. Many of the functions can be controlled by voice commands making it easier to time runs. The pages, which are available on all models, also allow the driver to configure steering effort, engine and transmission response, launch control and some other driving functions. The Challenger interior holds four adults or a snug five, but like most coupes, however, rear seat access requires extra coordination and flexibility. The trunk on the other hand seems massive for a car in this class with 16.2 cubic feet of cargo space making it larger than many sedans. Most of the public interest is in the super powerful Hellcat model, which is billed as the “most powerful muscle car ever," but we were impressed by all the engines, even the base model with its 305-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. It’s quick, making a 0 to 60 mph run in only 6.0 seconds. Combined with the new standard new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters, the car was great fun to drive and it’s expected to get up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. We sampled all the available engine choices including the 375-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, the new 485-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 and the new 707-hp supercha rged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 Hellcat. The Performance levels of the V-8 engines were especially impressive with 0 to 60 mph times of 5.5-seconds, 4.1-seconds and in the mid to high 3 second range respectively. The Hellcat has one very interesting feature that allows the owner to maintain more control over the stable. Start the car with the black key fob and the engine output is limited to 500 horsepower. Start the car using the red key fob and the driver has access to the whole herd – 707 hp. Other notable Hellcat numbers included a quarter-mile time of 11.2 seconds and 125 mph. (With drag radial tires it has a NHRAcertified time of 10.8 seconds. To put that number in perspective, that is the same quarter mile time as a Porsche 911 Turbo.)

Dodge Challenger Chrysler says the top speed is limited to 199 mph, but unofficially we heard it will do 207 mph. We like speed, but those numbers are scary. Journa lists had a chance to sample t he straight-line quarter-mile acceleration at the Portland International Raceway and mostly what we saw was a lot of tire smoke when hot dog drivers or inexperienced drag racers tried to accelerate too fast. The new eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission (which is developed with ZF) is standard on the V-6 models, while all the V-8s come with a standard six-speed manual with a heavy-duty version of the eight-speed automatic as an option. The manual has a fuel-saving function with a fuel-saving 1-4 skip-shift sequence. Driving on the twisty roads through the Columbia River Gorge, we sampled the V-6 and the 5.7-liter Hemi models and thought the handling was good, but there was some body lean and they felt a little bulky on the narrow roads. One of the available packages easily flattens the handling as we discovered on the track. We thought the new electric steering system was precise and communicative. Later in the day at the Portland International Raceway we had a chance to drive the car on the 1.967-mile road course. We always appreciate when a manufacturer arranges for track time for the high performance cars – otherwise, it’s difficult to get a full appreciation for the car. Driving several different Challengers on the track confirmed excellent handling and brakes especially on the SRT models that were equipped with the legendary Brembo brake system. In addition to driving on the track, we both took a ride with a much more experience driver to check out the full potential of the Hellcat model. Barb rode with a professional race driver in the Hellcat with the automatic

Dodge Challenger transmission and Bill rode with the chief Challenger development engineer driving a manual transmission and the cars played fol low t he leader for severa l laps. T he engineer, who had spent hundreds of hours driving the Challenger at speed, was fast, smoothly drifting the corners and getting excellent times. Interestingly, on the straight stretches the race driver actually pulled away from the manual transmission car because the automatic transmission shifted so much faster than the engineer was able to shift the manual transmission car. The engineer admitted, if he were buying the Hellcat, he would buy the automatic. Unt i l s ome one e l s e c ome s out w it h something better, any discussion of muscle or performance cars should start with the 2015 Dodge Challenger. Subaru engineers have also taken great pains to keep the vehicle weight to a low 2,762 pounds which a l s o c ont r i but e s t o t he c a r ’s exc el lent ha nd l i ng characteristics. The four-cylinder 2.0-liter Boxer eng i ne ha s a dua l overhead cam with a unique direct inject ion a nd por t inject ion technolog y t hat enables the engine to run at a very high 12.5:1 compression ratio to achieve a maximum ef f ic ienc y, e spe c ia l l y i n l ig ht- a nd me d iu m-load conditions. The engine uses a Dual Active Valve Control System to produce a broad ra nge of torque across a broad curve to give it better response in everyday driving. The high 7,400 rpm red line and torque curve allows the driver a wide range of power.

The driver can also switch the shifter to a manual mode with direct control using the shifter or the paddle shifters.

The interior has a simple functional design with large but tons, a nd wel l-placed cont rols. T he nav igat ion system uses a 6.1-inch touch screen mounted high in the center stack making it easy to read without having to look too far away from the road. The large center-mounted tachometer ha s a d ig ita l speedometer readout in its face making it easier to see speed and RPMs instantly. We also appreciate the large dead pedal for the driver’s left foot. The seats are highly bolstered for extra support during more spirited driving or at the track. Rear seats are only for emergencies or smaller children. They will hold two properly installed forward-facing child seats.

The BRZ is equipped with a To r s e n l i m i t e d - s l i p d i f ferent ia l w h ich helps the inside wheel maintain traction during cornering. For track driving the Vehicle Stabi lit y Cont rol has f ive different settings allowing the driver to select a level of control or to completely switch the system off for track driving.

The cargo area is a tight 6.9 cubic feet of space, but that can be expanded by folding dow n the rear seat backs, and then there is room for a couple of sets of golf clubs.

2015 Nissan GT-R By Bill Schaffer Feature Writer

Purely by the numbers, the Nissan GT-R Black model I drove recently is the fastest car I’ve ever driven. I have not driven the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 or the Porsche Turbo S – both are faster, but only by the blink of an eye or two. G et t i ng r ig ht to t he nu mber s, w h ich incidentally, are compilations of the numbers provided by the big-name buff magazines. I certainly don’t have the facilities, equipment or guts to run those tests on Washington’s Hwy 14; besides my wife, Barbara, would have a "turbocharged fit" if I tried. According to the buff magazine testing the Nissan GT-R accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, to 100 mph in 7.1 seconds and the quarter-mile acceleration takes 11.2 seconds at a speed of 125 mph. It has a 193-mph top speed. It also stops from 60 mph in 116 feet and pulls 1.02 G on the skidpad. Now we can get down to the car. Perhaps the weak link in the Nissan GT-R is styling. The Nissan 370Z is better looking. The GT-R is attractive, but it’s not the kind of car that says “WOW” unless you know what it is and what it is capable of. My wife Barbara and I did, however, see several “thumbs up” and one guy hanging out of the window of a car on the freeway trying to get a better look at it. There are rumors the next GT-R will be more dramatic and that would probably help the appeal. An offspring of the legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R, which dominated performance cars in Japan in the early 1970s and early 2000s, the Nissan GT-R doesn’t scream “super car,” but has a distinctive look that seems to produce more of a questioning look, especially when someone sees the Nissan logo on the rear deck lid. The full-flavored sound of the quad exhaust outlets adds to the mystery. With worldwide production numbers running well under 2,000 a year, it’s not a car you’ll see very often. We qu ick ly d iscovered one of t he f irst adjustments we should make when starting out was to f lip the suspension switch from the normal (default) setting to the comfort setting. There is a definite lack of spring in the step of the GT-R on the two firmer settings. Driving briskly on a curvy highway felt like

what I imagine it must be like to be an expert skier carving turns in a steep virgin snowfield -- like the ones you see in the movies. Helping keep the GT-R grounded are some massive 20-inch tires; however, the tires produce a significant amount of road noise. Plus all that rubber on the road is prone to a bit of lateral movement when driven over those w ide groves created by all the studded snow tires that are used for winter driving in our area. Under the long hood of the Nissan GT-R is a 3.8-liter V-6 engine outfitted with twin turbochargers that boost the horsepower total to 545, and the torque to 463-lb.ft. That’s amazing horsepower for a V-6 engine. The engine drives all four wheels through a super-fast shifting six-speed dual-clutch transmission. For extra control it has racingstyle paddle shifters mounted on the steering column, not on the steering wheel.

The Nissan GT-R accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, to 100 mph in 7.1 seconds and the quarter-mile acceleration takes 11.2 seconds at a speed of 125 mph. It has a 193 mph top speed.

Suppor t i ng t h is rema rkable d r ivet ra i n are massive Brembo brakes, Rays 20-inch f or ge d a lu m i nu m w he e l s , a Bl i s t e i n Damptronic Shock absorber system and it’s all choreographed by the Driver Configurable Tra nsm ission, Suspension a nd Veh icle Dynamic Controls, which allow the driver to “tune” the GT-R to his or her driving style. We’ve driven other cars that during a brief i nterlude of foot-ma shed-to-t he-f looracceleration will make the skin on your face pull back like a plastic surgeon demonstrating what he/she could do for you. However, we’ve never had that happen after doing the “mashing” at 60 mph – Okay, I did push it a little, a couple of times. A downside of driving this luxury race car, in addition to the less than smooth ride, is the strange sounds it makes from time to time while sitting at stop lights. In another car we might assume something was amiss, however, we were assured all the sounds were normal, and a part of partaking in the car’s amazing performance. I originally had a chance to drive the GT-R on a racetrack in Portugal when it first came out and it was something of a beast – not only fast, but a bit rough around the edges and very much like a racecar. The 2015 Black version I drove recently is much more sophisticated and had attractive red and black leather Recaro seats with deeply bolstered heated seats. The interior, which includes room for four if the rear seat occupants are wee ones

With worldwide production numbers running well under 2,000 a year, it's not a car you'll see very often. who don’t have legs long enough to hang over a seat. The front seats are sophisticated looking and very comfortable. Standard equipment on the GT-R includes Bose audio, Nissan hard-drive navigation with seven-inch screen, push-button ignition and HomeLink. It even has a cruise control and drink holders, which are often deleted from performance cars -- cited as being frivolous. A neat “toy” is displayed in the navigation screen of the GT-R. Simply push one of the buttons and twist a dial to the left of the screen just a finger away from the 2 o’clock position of the leather-clad steering wheel and the driver can cycle through 11 customizable pages of displays providing numerical and graphic displays of everything you could possibly want to know about the way the GT-R is performing -- from the temperature of the transmission oil to how fast it is braking or

accelerating or how many degrees of turn or the number of G’s you pulled in the last corner. The 2014 Nissan GT-R is not the kind of car we would want for ourselves, however we found it surprisingly easy and comfortable to drive. In addition, the fuel economy wasn’t bad for a car of this caliber. The EPA rates it at 16-mpg city, 23-mpg highway and 19 combined. We actually averaged 19.1 mpg, even with a few hard “mashes” on the accelerator. For someone serious about performance, or who has longed to own a “supercar,” the 2015 Nissan GT-R is the best value on the market. There are three trim levels of the 2015 Nissan GT-R: Premium, Black Edition and the Nismo with base prices of $103,365, $113,105 and $151,585 respectively. By the way, the limited availability Nismo has 600-hp. -- Courtesy of Auto Digest.

2015 Acura TLX By Barbara & Bill Schaffer eature Writers Just like we have certain foods t hat we consider to be comfort foods, there are some cars that fall into a similar category with us -- let’s call them “cozy cars” for lack of a better name. One of the vehicles we’ve often considered to be a “cozy car” is the Acura TL because it’s user friendly, and comfortable to drive and ride in. We always know what to expect when we drive a TL and it doesn’t require reading the owner manual to figure out how something works. For 2015, the TL has changed – it’s smaller and the name has been changed to TLX. Actually it does the heavy duty assignment of replacing two cars, the TL and the smaller TSX. The goal was to have a car that better fit the gap between the smaller ILX and the f lagship RDX. By the yardstick, the TLX is about fourinches shorter and one-inch narrower than the TL, but the wheelbase is the same. It is also nearly five-inches longer and one-inch wider than the TSX. So, it is about the same size as targeted luxury competitors like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 and Lexus IS. From a st y l i ng st a ndpoi nt t he Ac u r a signature Jewel Eye LED headlights, which first appeared on the latest Acura MDX, steal the show producing not only one of the most st ylish headlight treatments in the auto industry, but they also provide a long, bright look down the road at night. The entire front fascia has a clean new aerodynamic treatment with smaller grille area topped by Acura’s signature metallic “wing.” The sides have interesting new character lines that give the car the look of forward motion. The rear end has a short deck, large wrap-around taillights with a long three-dimensional LED pipe light and a clean horizontal look that makes the car look wider. The TL X interior is filled with luxurious appointments, soft touch surfaces, supportive seats and well thought-out controls. To make the occupants stay even more cozy and safe, it’s loaded with the latest technologies and an audiophile-quality entertainment system. The center stack has a simple control system for inter-vehicle functions. It uses a two screen system w ith an upper eight-inch screen to provide data for the Navigation system, features like AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic and the backup camera. The screen is controlled by a large control knob mounted just below the lower touch screen. The lower screen is a seven-inch touch screen used to control the climate, audio and other vehicle functions. The optional Tech Package has Advanced Compatibility Engineering (Ace) and the new AcuraWatch system. This is one of the most advanced suites of driver aids we’ve seen. It encompasses Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Collision Mit igat ion Braking, Forward Collision Control, Lane Depa r t u re Wa r n i ng, La ne Keep A ssist,

Road Depa r ture Mit igat ion, Blind Spot Information, Multi-View Rear Camera with Dynamic Guidelines and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor. The traditiona l shifter on V-6 models is replaced by the advanced Electronic Gear Selector. It uses an instinctive push-button system to make the initial drive commands P-R-N-D and the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters to manually shift. The console also houses an electronic parking brake with an Automatic Brake Hold button which retains brake pressure when the vehicle is stopped – this gives the driver better control on hills and in heavy stop-and-go traffic. The “Per forma nce” element of t he new TL X is cemented w it h t wo signif icant ly updated engine choices, but the big news is transmissions. Acura has been slow entering the “gear wars” but the new eight- and ninespeed automatics make a major leap forward. Both new transmissions are impressive, and they make a significant difference in performance and fuel economy. The base engine is a 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC w it h d i r e c t i nje c t ion pr o duc i n g 2 0 6 horsepower and 182 lb.-ft. of torque. On paper the naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine doesn’t excite, but on the road, it is a “gem” with strong acceleration and a smooth, spirited character. Teamed with the world’s first eight-speed double clutch automatic transmission w it h a torque converter it seemed to have the perfect gear ratios to provide a combination of performance and excellent fuel economy – 24 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 28 mpg combines. The shifts are quick, smooth and positive, and we appreciated the standard steering wheel mounted shift paddles. Buff magazines list a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 6.8 seconds for the four-cylinder. A 3.5-liter direct injection SOHC V-6 engine powers t he t wo upper level Acura TL X models. The engine has a Variable Cylinder Management System which deactivates three cylinders during light load driving and it has an idle stop system that shuts the engine off at stop lights and other pauses. The 24-valve engine produces 290 horsepower and is mated with the new Acura nine-speed automatic transmission – and what a difference 10 horsepower (over the previous TL engine) and 50 percent more gears make. The extra gear ratios allowed the engineers to tune the drive train for better acceleration using lower ratios in the bottom of the range and higher ratios, for better fuel economy in the top of the range. The result is a significant improvement in fuel economy to 21/34/25 mpg for the front drive and 21/31/25 mpg for the SH-AWD. The V-6 model will accelerate to 60 mph in about six seconds. All three TLX models have very good handling characteristics. The front drive models are equipped with Precision All-Wheel Steering (P-AWS) which improves handling agility. For example, in a parking lot by turning the
