Dear Giorgia, Marco, Gabriele, John, Chiara and Darin, (I hope I have your first names correct) Yesterday I heard from Piercarlo Borgogno that you will all help me and Job Wouters, together with Jana van Meerveld and Jeroen Heeman to paint and install WEST MOON STREET. That is great news! In this mail you will find sketches and an overview of what we want to do in Spazio Borgogno. Also I want to tell you something about myself, about how I met Piercarlo, about Job and how I met him, and about what we are aiming for with WEST MOON STREET. I am a painter and a muralist. I am interested in the relation between painting and architecture. Therefore ornament and decoration are important for me. I think painting is not only for the eyes but for the whole body. I like to think of painting as a performative art; it is about gestures and colors. You will find that the way we paint is not difficult but it takes a lot of the right concentration. It is all about having the right amount of paint in your brush and making fluid movements very slowly. I met Piercarlo in 2004 in Prato where I had made a red mural in a beautiful abandoned 19th century factory. Some months later he called me if I wanted to make a work at his booth at Miart 2005. I went to Milano with Jana (the same) and Gerben (who is not able to be with us this time) and in two and a half days we made one of the best works I ever did. It was there for only a couple of days but seen by at least ten thousend people. Piercarlo is the curator and producer of one of the most beautiful artworks in public space: the Barolo chapel which is portrayed in WEST MOON STREET. I met Job Wouters about five years ago. I saw his letters and words and I could hardly believe my eyes: I had been dreaming of this for years! I asked him to make a book about my work in which the typography would be as important as the images. This book was called VERNACULAR PAINTING. At some point Belgian fashion designer Dries van Noten saw this book and asked us to collaborate with him for a collection of men’s clothes. For this we also made a mural in the Grand Palais in Paris as a stage for the show. WEST MOON STREET is a romantic and psychedelic street filed with houses and trees, words and sentences, oktopusses, fishes and butterflies, voodoo style suits and archangels, flowers and electric guitars. Our inspirations are in folk art and decorative traditions from Yemen to Norway. We think a lot of this anonimous traditional painting is more powerfull and interesting than most of western high art from the last 100 years. We also like the fact that this kind of painting was not made for galleries and museums but for kitchens and sleepingrooms. And although Piercarlo’s wonderfull space is of course a galery, we will try to turn it into something else, a place where you would like to stay, cook and eat, play music, sleep or read a book. We will paint with pigments and casein glue. The paint is very thin and fluid. Mostly we will work with two colors in the same wide brush, creating a two tone-gradient effect to which you can easily get addicted. The space is huge and we want to fill it completely, so we would like to start saturday afternoon and work non stop until the opening on Thursday October fourth. With this email Gijs Frieling introduces himself to some students from the Liceo Artistico Boccioni in Milan. They were selected as collaborators in his team to paint WEST MOON STREET, this large wall-painting which run all eighty meters in our gallery walls. Twelve complete outfits from the 2012 men's winter collection by belgian fashion designer DRIES VAN NOTEN, produced in partnership between the designer and the artists, is included in this artwork, an unusual, funny and new combine-painting.

Cari Giorgia, Marco, Gabriele, Giovanni, Chiara e Darin, Ieri ho sentito da Piercarlo Borgogno che tutti voi aiuterete me e Job, insieme a Jana van Meerveld e Jeroen Heeman nel dipingere ed installare WEST MOON STREET. é una gran bella notizia! In questa mia email troverete alcuni bozzetti ed il progetto di quello che insieme realizzeremo nello Spazioborgogno. Vi voglio intanto raccontare qualcosa su di me, di come ho conosciuto Piercarlo e poi Job, e qualcosa sulle motivazioni di questo nostro WEST MOON STREET. Sono un pittore e un realizzatore di murales ed il mio principale interesse è mettere in relazione pittura e architettura. Sono quindi per me importanti l’ornamento e la decorazione. Penso che l’arte di dipingere non debba interessare soltanto i nostri occhi ma coinvolgere l’intero nostro corpo. Immagino quindi la pittura come un’ arte performativa: gesto e colore. La tecnica che usiamo non è difficile, ma richiede la giusta concentrazione. Il controllo della corretta quantità di colore nel vostro pennello da stendere sulla superficie del muro con dei movimenti fluidi e alquanto lenti. Ho incontrato Piercarlo nel 2004 a Prato, dove stavo realizzando un mio grande lavoro rosso in una bella fabbrica del 19 ° secolo, ormai in disuso. Dopo pochi mesi mi ha chiamato proponendomi di realizzare un grande murale per l’intero suo stand nell’edizione 2005 di MiArt. A Milano, con due assistenti (Jana sarà con noi anche questa volta) in poco più di due giorni abbiamo portato a termine una fra le opere migliori che io abbia realizzato. Le fiere durano solo pochi giorni, ma quel lavoro è stato visto da almeno diecimila persone. Piercarlo è inoltre l’ideatore ed il curatore di una fra le più belle opere di arte pubblica che io abbia visitato: la cappella di Barolo nelle Langhe, che voglio “ritrarre” nel nostro WEST MOON STREET. Ho incontrato Job Wouters cinque anni fa. Quando ho visto gli alfabeti che aveva disegnato e le parole che con queste sue lettere costruiva, non potevo credere ai miei occhi: era esattamente ciò che cercavo da anni! Gli ho subito chiesto di aiutarmi nel progettare un libro sul mio lavoro dove però la grafica dei testi doveva avere la stessa importanza delle immagini dei miei lavori. Il libro, risultato di questa collaborazione, ha un titolo curioso: VERNACULAR PAINTING. Alla fine dello scorso anno questo libro è stato visto da Dries Van Noten, il noto stilista belga, che ci ha coinvolto per la nuova collezione uomo del prossimo inverno. La collezione è stata presentata a Parigi nel Grand Palais lo scorso gennaio dove, durante la sfilata, abbiamo potuto realizzare un grande wall painting. Alcuni di queste sue nuove creazioni saranno parte integrante di West Moon Street. WEST MOON STREET vuole essere un percorso romantico e psichedelico dove incontreremo case ed alberi, ma anche parole e frasi, o piovre giganti, pesci e farfalle, personaggi addobbati in stile voodoo e ancora arcangeli, fiori e chitarre elettriche… Immagini che si rifanno all’arte ed alle tradizioni popolari, motivi decorativi che spaziano dallo Yemen alla Norvegia! Questa anonima pittura popolare spesso mi appare più potente ed interessante di molta dell’arte colta apparsa negli ultimi cento anni. Pittura, che ci piace immaginata non tanto per gallerie e musei ma piuttosto come pittura “domestica”, per cucine e camere da letto. Sebbene il meraviglioso spazio di Piercarlo è di fatto una galleria, cercheremo di trasformarlo in qualcosa d’altro, un luogo dove fermarsi, oppure cucinare e mangiare, ascoltare musica, magari dormire o leggere un libro…Non vedo l’ora di incontrarvi e cominciare! Con questa email Gijs Frieling si presenta ad alcuni studenti del Liceo Artistico Boccioni di Milano che sono stati selezionati quali giovani collaboratori del suo team nella realizzazione di questo grande wall painting. WEST MOON STEET si svilupperà per tutti gli ottanta metri delle pareti dello Spazioborgogno. Alcuni capi di abbigliamento della collezione autunno-inverno 2012/13 di DRIES VAN NOTEN, frutto della collaborazione fra lo stilista e gli artisti, saranno parte integrante e fondamentale di quest’opera, arricchita e cosÏ trasformata in una sorta di originalissimo combine-painting.
