Our History Spartanburg Methodist College was founded as Textile Industrial Institute in 1911 by Dr. David English Camak, a visionary Methodist minister. At its founding as a work-study cooperative, TII served young adults working in area textile mills by offering high school level courses in preparation for advanced education or employment. In this first cooperative education program in the country, students worked a week and then took classes for a week. This arrangement enabled the school to provide resources for education and for life.

In 1927, the first two years of college-level work were added to the curriculum to provide graduates with an associate degree in liberal arts for transfer to senior level colleges. The continued close relationship between TII and local business and industry led to the development of associate degrees that prepared students for immediate employment.

In 1940, the high school classes were dropped from the TII curriculum. In 1942, Textile Industrial Institute became Spartanburg Junior College and for the next twenty-five years focused its efforts on providing associate degrees designed for transfer into a wide variety of bachelor degree programs. Beginning in 1965, the College began a cycle of growth during which over three-fourths of the present campus buildings were erected or renovated, the curriculum was broadened and strengthened, student enrollment doubled and new expertise was added through faculty growth and development.

In 1974, Spartanburg Junior College became Spartanburg Methodist College.

Since its founding, the College has been affiliated with the mission work of the United Methodist Church and its forebear, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The relationship between the College and the church has continued across the years through the General Board of Global Ministries and the Board of Global Ministries of the South Carolina Annual Conference. The College’s name attests to the pride the institution’s trustees, faculty, staff, and student body take in working and studying at a college based on the traditional values of the church and the United States of America.

Today, Spartanburg Methodist College serves a highly diverse student body from several states of the United States as well as from several different nations of the world. The College seeks to meet the educational needs of its student body by enabling each student to meet the challenges of a technologically based future. Spartanburg Methodist College offers a variety of educational programs to meet the needs of the traditional college student and of the non-traditional working adult.

From Our President Dear Friends, Many of you are familiar with John Donne’s writing from 1624: “No man is an island, entire of itself ...” It’s a reminder that as human beings, we do not thrive when isolated from one another. It’s also a reminder that it takes all of us working together to achieve great things.

And we here at Spartanburg Methodist College are keenly aware that we need you working with us to make SMC an even greater College. We are blessed to have so many of you who help us in our work. This year, we say thanks in our Annual Report to more than 1011 friends who have given us both prayers and gifts.You and the rest of our friends made fiscal year 2009-10 a great success!

Your gift plays a vital role in our ability to help students connect to their future. Our role in providing the first two years of a four-year baccalaureate education has enabled more than 20,000 students to connect to degrees and careers that have resulted in bright futures not only for our graduates, but for the communities in which they live and serve. I am frequently struck by the numbers of SMC graduates that I meet who are not only successful in their chosen careers, but serving their communities in meaningful ways: from volunteering with not-for-profit groups and churches; to participation in a benefit walk or run; to running for and serving in elected office. We are proud of our role in helping students get their educational start and watching them go onto become successful citizens and community leaders. We are grateful to you for your role in helping us do this.

Earlier this year, our faculty, staff, students and trustees revisited our mission statement. I think our revised statement sums us up pretty well: Spartanburg Methodist College is a two-year private residential institution within the United Methodist Connection. At SMC, lives are transformed in a values-oriented, student-centered atmosphere in the Christian tradition that encourages academic excellence, intellectual exploration, social awareness, and character development within the liberal arts tradition.

From Our Students Dear SMC Donors, Supporters, and Friends: The goal of the SMC community is to make a difference in the lives of its students. During my term as Student Government Association President, I was able to see that goal accomplished on many levels. I know for a fact that without the help of our generous donors, our goal for SMC could not have been met.

Not only did I see how the assistance provided by the donors allowed students to simply attend SMC, but I also saw first-hand how the financial donations from our donors allowed students to participate in an assortment of programs like athletics, choral groups, or student-interest groups. I am truly thankful to all of the donors for their financial support.

Our donors probably never realize how thankful we are here at SMC to have strong financial support for student life, technology upgrades, facilities and grounds maintenance, along with so much more. Everyday, more students are getting closer and closer to achieving lifelong dreams because of the support of our donors. I am positive, that because of our donors, students are given opportunities that they would not have had otherwise .

Without our donors, SMC would not be able to function at the level of success that is constantly being reached. Every single student that has attended SMC, is currently attending, or will attend in the future, would not be able to walk away from SMC feeling enriched if our donors were not here to provide such means for success.

SMC holds great importance in the hearts of the students that attend. I have met many students from all walks of life who have traveled different journeys to reach SMC - and, now that they are here, they are very resilient in their studies.

At times I am sure many people take for granted being able to attend college. But here at SMC we constantly strive to remember and remain grateful for the opportunity to attend this amazing institution - and that we do have those people who find it in their heart to give generously to our school.

So, as former SGA president and an SMC alumnus, I want to once again say “Thank you!� Thank you for giving me a chance - and allowing SMC to make the impact on my life that it did. Many students have been or will be impacted in the same way - past, present and future.

hile the national figures for charitable giving have declined substantially the past couple years, SMC’s alumni and friends have continued to support the college tremendously! Total receipts in 2009 exceeded $2.2 million with Church giving reaching nearly $600,000 and the Annual Fund exceeding $1 million.

In fact, because of your enthusiastic support, we were forced to split our annual donor recognition dinner into two events this year.

We think everyone enjoyed the opportunity to socialize in a bit smaller setting and have the opportunity to meet and talk with SMC President Dr. Keith.

Alumni events across the state are also providing additional opportunities to meet Dr. Keith, and we hope you are able to attend some of those as well.

If you have the chance to visit SMC, you will immediately see that your generosity has greatly enhanced the “curb appeal” of campus.

The lush grass and landscaping, and the clean and well kept buildings will jump out at you. Visitors, potential students, and our faculty and staff often make these comments and we owe much of this to you gifts.

Admissions has the very difficult task in competing with other institutions and your unrestricted annual gifts help them dramatically for campus updates and scholarships.

Speaking of scholarships, you’ll be happy to know that we continue to boast that no student will be turned away for money reasons; you donors deserve the credit for that. Both endowed gifts and annual gifts make the difference in recruiting and retaining outstanding young men and women to SMC. Please keep in touch as many new donor programs, some highlighted in Frontiers, are being initiated.
