Daniel Muñoz Born and residing in Moraleja (Spain), Daniel Muñoz started his career in the early nineties by painting on the walls of his native town. After many years of self-study, mostly focused on mural paintings, he shifted to the city of Madrid in the year 2000 to begin his studies in Fine Arts at the Complutense University. In the early years of his career in Madrid, he began to perform painting displays and interpositions in various Spanish and European cities. His work was then influenced by a plastic evolution and he established sketching as his main language tool. Since the beginning, Daniel Muñoz’s work has been relatively figurative, since he initiated his career by exclusively using public spaces as the main medium of exchange. By doing so, he made his messages recognizable for most people, without socio-economic differentiation between the masses.

Throughout his journey, he has executed numerous painting displays and interpositions in various public spaces of Europe, North and South America, Asia and the Middle East. He has also participated actively in a number of exhibition rooms such as the Luis Adelantado Gallery in Valencia, the BACC Museum of Bangkok, CEART (Fuenlabrada, Spain) or the National Gallery of Amman in Jordan. His work has been published in numerous well-reputed artistic publications and books.

As both the cities of New Orleans and San Antonio launch their tricentennial celebrations in 2018, we are reminded of our common path and of the countless bonds that connect Spain to the United States, where Hispanic communities of various backgrounds can also trace their cultural roots. As a tribute to Spain´s architectural legacy that has shaped cities and urban planning, our catalogue’s cover is the artwork of muralist Daniel Muñoz. He will have the opportunity to leave his imprint on San Antonio´s public art. Spain will be proud to contribute to both commemorations. A flagship exhibit will be “500 years of Spanish Painting from the Museums of Madrid” featuring great masters at the San Antonio Museum of Art where, additionally, contemporary artist Maider Lopez will make a site specific intervention. Olé San Antonio at the Pearl will present a rich program of arts and crafts, culinary and performing arts inviting different artists and musicians from Spain. “Recovered Memories: Spain, New Orleans and the Support for the American Revolution”, displayed at the Cabildo of the Louisiana State Museum, will highlight the decisive diplomatic support, financial aid, and military action of the Spanish crown in the Revolutionary war, and will shed light to little known facts about the broader historical context of Spanish Louisiana. Santiago Ramón y Cajal, the father of modern neuroscience will be honored in “The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal”. The exhibit will be presented in NY and Boston, and will display 80 of his drawings, both artworks and blueprints for understanding the nervous system, which in turn will be put in contrast with modern discoveries of the brain made at the MIT. This season, we will bring a taste of the thriving contemporary dance scene of Spain. Prominent choreographer Sharon Fridman and his troupe will perform at Jacob’s Pillow alongside two superb dance companies, Marcat and Carmen Fumero who will show their works in a week of Spanish dance in the Berkshires. In addition, we will continue our collaboration with the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, where Joaquin Collado will be in residence. Our stunning state-funded dance companies will tour the United States. The National Dance Company will offer a contemporary and award winning new choreography of Carmen and the National Ballet of Spain will perform Suite Sevilla as part of the Flamenco Festival. Performer Angelica Liddel and the mesmerizing Agrupación Señor Serrano will give us a glimpse into theatrical innovation of which Spain has been at the forefront. We strongly believe in nurturing and propelling young talent into the spotlight. Hailed as a new sensation, vocalist and trumpet player Andrea Motis will take part in Stanford Jazz Festival. Acclaimed cellist Pablo Ferrandez will make his debut in Grant Park Music Festival. On the other side of the musical spectrum, a plethora of indie bands will perform at South by Southwest. Last but not least, SPANISH CINEMA NOW and LA OLA will once again carry a selection of the best titles of the year in mainstream and independent filmmaking.

The very name New Orleans, Louisiana – bestowed in honor of the Regent of France, Philippe, Duc d’Orléans and Louis XIV respectively - reflects the French heritage of the city and state. Yet, the most recognizable part of New Orleans, Jackson Square, known as the Place d’Armes during the French period and Plaza de Armas under Spain, stands as testimony to the Spanish impact on New Orleans and Louisiana. The buildings facing the plaza are the legacy of the Spanish philanthropist – Andrés Almonester y Roxas. A native of Mairena del Alcor, near Seville, Almonester built the Cathedral, Presbytere and Cabildo in the wake of the 1788 fire that consumed New Orleans. Together they create an impressive sight. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, architect of the United States Capitol, in 1819 wrote: “New Orleans has at first sight a very imposing appearance beyond any other city in the United States, in which I have yet been.” Later in the midnineteenth century, Almonester’s daughter Micaela constructed the two large apartment buildings that overlook Jackson Square. Together they form one of the, in the words of architectural historian Sam Wilson, Jr., “most notable civic centers in America.” Transferred from France to Spain at the conclusion of the 7 Years War in 1762, New Orleans and the vast territory of Louisiana was transferred back to France

and then to the United States in 1803. For forty years, Louisiana was a Spanish colony and the impact on 18th century New Orleans was pervasive and long lasting. The first newspaper published in Louisiana was Le Moniteur de la Louisiane (1794). It should be no surprise that it was in French, though published in the Spanish period. From the earliest days of Spanish Louisiana, broadsides were published in both French and Spanish. Spanish governors married into local French families. Among such governors was Bernardo de Gálvez, whose contributions to the American Revolution were singular. Without Spanish financial assistance arriving via New Orleans, the result of that conflict could have been significantly different. The Crown welcomed and encouraged immigrants from the Canary Islands, Malaga and displaced Acadians into La Luisiana. New Orleans, a city rich in operatic tradition, can proudly claim that the first opera, though French - André-Modeste Grétry’s Sylvain, was presented during the Spanish period (1796). New Orleans supported a growing artistic community including the portrait painter José de Salazar of Mexico and composer Vicente Llorca, a native of Valencia. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, New Orleans was ostensibly transformed into an “American City.” However, actions on the part of Spain insured that the links to Europe were extended. As Napoleon invaded Spain, authorities in Cuba, fearing the presence of a large exiled French community, expelled the refugees from St. Dominque who had found safe haven in Cuba. Resettling in New Orleans in 1809, their presence doubled the size of the city. As a result, the French – and Spanish - influence remained strong. During the 19th century, 37 Spanish newspapers were published in New Orleans. Both the French L’Abeille de la Nouvelle-Orleans and the English Times-Democrat included Spanish sections. In the 19th century, the musical impact of Spain on New Orleans continued to be strong. Prior to 1820 the overture to Vicente Martín y Soler’s opera “Una cosa rara” was performed. In 1859, Francisco Asenjo Barbieri set his zarzuela “Entre mi mujer y el negro” in New Orleans and celebrated the city’s coffee and culinary delights. During the 1884-1885 World’s industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, the Spanish world, particularly Mexico, used it as a venue to showcase their talents and resources. In the twentieth century numerous initiatives were undertaken to strengthen the relationship with the Spanish World. The lavishly illustrated monthly El Mercurio, published from 1911 to 1920, sought to develop the relation between New Orleans and the Spanish world. During the same period, Tulane University’s College of Commerce and Business Administration offered courses designed to develop Spanish and Latin American markets and the New Orleans Board of Trade encouraged public schools to offer classes in Spanish. A Spanish children’s theater was established in 1917 in the very heart of the Vieux Carré. Today, tourists from across the world marvel at Almonaster’s legacy - Jackson Square. St. Louis Cemetery I, built on ground given by Carlos IV, introduces visitors to the city’s ethnic diversity. Tourists traveling on the historic streetcars marvel at the architecture of St. Charles Avenue, named for that same monarch. A vibrant Spanish language community was critical to the city’s recovery after the tragic Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans remains, to this day, a Spanish city.

SAN ANTONIO TRICENTENNIAL San Antonio is commemorating its Tricentennial throughout 2018 with celebratory events encompassing arts, culture, history, education, service, and volunteerism across the city. The Spanish government has been an ardent partner and supporter in this effort, helping to bring art, music, lectures, and film series to San Antonio throughout the year that honor the city’s Spanish history and heritage.

The City of San Antonio was founded three-hundred years ago as a strategic outpost of presidios and missions on the edge of northern New Spain. The river and surrounding area were named after St. Anthony of Padua by Spanish explorers. By the 18th century, San Antonio had become a bulwark for the Spanish against encroachment from the French. The city became a place of confluence for cultures, languages, and sometimes conflicting traditions. With the foundation of the mission San Antonio de Valero in 1718 and the establishment of a presidio, San Antonio was born. Wave after wave of settlers followed, including a large group of Canary Islanders, who arrived in 1731. Soon the site became the largest Spanish, and later Mexican, settlement in Texas. Today, San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the United States and maintains strong ties with its Spanish roots.

Highlights include the San Antonio Museum of Art’s major special exhibition, Spain: 500 Years of Spanish Painting from the Museums of Madrid, and Olé San Antonio, which consists of dedicated arts and culture programming presenting Spanish art forms across the San Antonio.

On view from June 22-September 16, 2018, Spain: 500 Years of Spanish Painting from the Museums of Madrid is a comprehensive survey of 50 works from Spain that will only be seen in San Antonio. These works come from the most important museums in Madrid, including the Museo Nacional del Prado. Some of the artists included are El Greco, Murillo, Velazquez, Ribera, Zurbaran, Madrazo, Sorolla, and Zuloaga. The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue and a full complement of education programming for audiences of all ages. The opening of the exhibition will be celebrated with a museum ball.

To celebrate contemporary art during the Tricentennial, the San Antonio Museum of Art is working with the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC to develop a work of art with contemporary artist Maider Lopez, who is known for her interventions in museums and public spaces. Maider will give a lecture in San Antonio in March to introduce her project. The Spanish government is also supporting a public mural by Daniel Muñoz, also known as SAN, a noted muralist. Muñoz is known for investigating human behavior and social relationships in his work.

The Summer program “Olé San Antonio” will introduce the citizens of San Antonio to different aspects of Spanish arts and culture at The Pearl. For twelve weeks between June 21 and September 16, the San Antonio Museum of Art will host lecture series, film festivals, visiting Spanish artists, and a weekly street-festival-inspired late evening featuring flamenco lessons, cooking demonstrations, poetry readings, dance, music, and artmaking, most of which will be free to the public.

The San Antonio Museum of Art will also host two three-day contemporary film festivals, and will dedicate its summer series, Family Flicks, to films from and about Spain. Spanish Cinema Now, organized by SPAIN Arts and Culture, brings together box-office hits and lowbudget independent films to introduce audiences to the breadth of Spanish cinema. Mujeres de Cine: Traveling Spanish Film Showcase Made by Women celebrates women directors at the forefront of Spanish cinema.

Two major lecture series explore the works on view in the Spain exhibition. The Director’s Lecture Series will welcome speakers from the Museums of Madrid who have generously lent works to the exhibition. In addition, the San Antonio Museum of Art will revive its popular Art History 101 lecture series, offering attendees the opportunity to look closely at a single artist or work from the exhibition. The museum will close the exhibition with a special Behind the Scenes talk with paintings conservator Zahira Velez, who will share with guests her experience working on Velázquez’ Las Meninas.

Spanish musicians also feature prominently. Organized by Musical Bridges Around the World, renowned Galician bagpipe player Cristina Pato performed in a special Tricentennial concert in early February.

San Antonio’s Tricentennial Commission intends for this extensive programming to offer an immersive experience to its visitors. Together, the wealth of culture and arts programming will remind San Antonio’s visitors of the deep cultural ties and affection between San Antonio and Spain.

Few people, other than historians, are fully aware of Spain’s role in the American Revolutionary War. Even before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, the Spanish Crown had been providing money, arms and supplies to the thirteen colonies. Recovered Memories seeks to provide the visitor with an engaging and carefully documented survey of Spain’s contribution to the founding of the United States. Moving through four exhibition spaces, the viewer will learn about the Enlightenment in Spain during the late 18th century, about men and women who lived through this age of reform and revolution, about an international war featuring military engagements on land and sea, in Europe and America; and, finally, about leading Spanish and American figures involved in the long standing relationship between the two countries. The exhibition also focuses on the traces left by the Spanish presence in the United States, particularly in New Orleans, Louisiana and Spain’s social, cultural and business ties to the United States from the late 19th century to the modern day. “La Florida” represents a unique collaborative initiative, combining innovative research in the humanities with cutting-edge technology. The site offers users an interactive, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive perspective of colonial Florida history, blending images, maps, videos, and documents. It houses a searchable and comprehensive population database, allowing researchers to explore the lives of the thousands of men and women who helped shape Florida’s colonial past. “La Florida” is both dynamic and organic, with exciting new content added regularly. The collaborative nature of this project will bring together historical content and technical innovation in ways we could not have imagined a decade ago.

Daniel Muñoz arrives to San Antonio Texas for a public art project to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the city. Daniel started his career in the early nineties by painting on the walls of his hometown of Moraleja in Spain. His language consists of various codes and symbols that invite us to interpret them in a careful manner, keeping in mind both classical painting narratives and the social narratives of contemporary art. Before his arrival in TX, Daniel will visit Washington DC to create a painting display in the Former Residence of the Ambassadors of Spain.

MAIDER LOPEZ WARHOL AT SAN ANTONIO DIED HERE MUSEUM OF ART Basque artist Maider López will create a site-specific intervention at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The artist’s work interrupts norms in space and architecture, inviting us to experience common spaces in novel and potentially rewarding ways. She creates interventions in spaces, situations, and architecture. Her works often involve the active participation of the viewer and can take the unprepared by surprise as an aspect of a familiar space mischievously highlighted or altered.

Following the installation “Picasso died here” at the Alliance Française in Malaga, Spain, Eugenio Merino and Los Interventores, present “Warhol Died Here”. The work invites the visitor to reflect upon the use of art and culture to nurture the necessities of global capitalism.The hyper-realism of Merino’s artwork highlights the conflict between reality and fiction within the touristic act. The project reflects upon the paradox of the touristic experience, whose exit door normally happens to be a souvenir shop.

MEMORY, MIND, MATTER: THE SCULPTURE OF EDUARDO CHILLIDA

In collaboration with the Meadows Museum, Dallas, Texas, and The Auckland Project, County Durham, England, The Frick Collection has organized an exhibition of Jacob and His Twelve Sons, an ambitious series of thirteen paintings that depict over life-size figures from the Old Testament. On loan from Auckland Castle, the works by the Spanish Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) have never before traveled to the United States.

The Meadows Museum at SMU presents Dallas’s first museum exhibition dedicated exclusively to the work of Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002). Chillida, one of Spain’s most celebrated modern sculptors, is famous for his monumental iron and stone sculptures that shape both urban and rural landscapes. Sixty-six works on loan from the Museo Chillida-Leku in Hernani (San Sebastián, Spain) provide visitors with a view of the artist at the height of his powers. A complimentary exhibition, “Chillida in Dallas: ‘De Musica’ at the Meyerson,” focuses on the landmark commission by Chillida at Dallas’s Meyerson Symphony Center.

SPANISH COLONIAL PAINTINGS FROM THE THOMA COLLECTION

Artist Antoni Muntadas work is showcased at Before Projection: Video Sculpture 19741995. The exhibition shines a spotlight on a historical moment and a body of work in the history of media art that has been largely overlooked since its inception. This tightly focused survey exhibition features works that have been rarely seen in the last twenty years. Other artists in the exhibition are Dara Birnbaum, Ernst Caramelle, Takahiko Iimura, Shigeko Kubota, Mary Lucier, Tony Oursler, Nam June Paik, Friederike Pezold, Adrian Piper, Diana Thater, and Maria Vedder.

In the 16th century, Spanish artists traveled to Latin America to meet the huge demand for artistic creations in newly established religious institutions. Sometimes, family workshops were founded that lasted generations. By the 17th century, artists born in Latin America began to dominate, and new styles and idioms emerged that had less and less to do with European origins. The 18th century saw the full flowering of Spanish colonial art, as regional schools and academies developed and influential patrons demanded both religious and secular paintings of the highest quality.

The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (Spain, 1852-1934), considered the father of modern neuroscience, seamlessly blends his scientific discoveries and artistic abilities in his works. Through exquisite and vibrant drawings, Ramon y Cajal is able to reveal great details of the brain through artwork. His depictions of the brain—which combine cutting-edge scientific knowledge with consummate draftsmanship—offer much greater clarity than photographs, so much so that they are still in wide use today. Featuring approximately 80 of Cajal’s drawings, the show situates them within the history of scientific illustration from the 16th to 19th centuries, and juxtaposes them with contemporary visualizations of the brain. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated book published by Abrams Books.

Curated by Madrid-based architect Edgar González, Export is a visual narrative of the great talent of Spanish architects working beyond their borders over the past 15 years. Divided into two components, the exhibition discusses both traditional practices and emerging areas in architecture, while helping viewers appreciate the greater challenges that Spanish architects face today. The Terminal in Yokohama by Foreign Office Architects (2002) and the renovation of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos (2014) serve as chronological bookends for the show. Public programs will include a series of lectures by Spanish architects Antón García Abril, Jesús Vassallo, Rafael Beneytez Durán, and Nerea Feliz.

2018 AIANY Honoree, Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo received his degree in architecture from the Polytechnic School in Madrid and developed his career in the United Sates, first at Perkins+Will, and later collaborating with Alberto Campo Baeza, in the construction of Casa Olnick Spanu. Over the past decade, Quismondo has worked for Olnick Spanu on the design, construction, and management of Casa Olnick Spanu, The Olnick Art Program, and the couple’s latest initiative, Magazzino Italian Art.

Environment[al] is a group exhibition with the work of architects, designers, and landscape architects including Enric Ruiz Geli [Cloud 9], Izaskun Chinchilla [Izaskun Chinchilla Architects], Carme Pinós [Estudio Carme Pinós], Gilles Retsin, and Günther Vogt [Vogt Landschaftsarchitekten]. SFMOMA introduces three projects by Mexico City-based architecture firm LANZA Atelier, comprising architects Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo. Founded in 2015, LANZA Atelier has quickly earned accolades for their precise and thoughtful approach, underscoring the relevance of design in everyday interactions. In their first solo show in the U.S., the duo draws upon their interest in Mexico City’s architectural history, bringing communities together through architectural interventions, and repurposing existing infrastructure for public benefit. These three projects range in scale, from furniture to large-scale public works.

The European Literature Night brings to New York a series of staged readings of books by European authors. In the “New York Notebook”, poet José Hierro establishes a dialogue with the city and, through that dialogue, confronts an intense and emotional meditation about the enigmas that have since the beginning of time worried men: life, love, the passing of time, death, art (music, poetry, the transgressive quality of words). The poet doesn’t hold a dialogue with the city of anonymous multitudes, or the chaotic megalopolis, cold and inhumane. Instead, his reflection drives from discovering the singular spaces of the city, flowing with his moods, and being in touch with his interior needs stemming from his own cultural and sentimental history.

In an international cultural landscape studded with outstanding Spanish artists, contemporary dancemakers and performers from Spain deserve recognition. The contemporary dance panorama in Spain is rich, varied and persistent. Creative and critical approaches range from dance that explores the pleasure of movement, to conceptual work, sometimes bitingly ironic, that invites audiences to reflect on social and political issues.

Defining lines between the arts have been deliberately smudged. Movement has been embraced by theatre directors, new circus artists, film-makers, digital artists and architects. Flamenco and folklore have established a bold, sometimes sly, dialogue with contemporary dance that questions social and gender stereotypes and brings tradition firmly into the territory of cultural inquiry. Works by Israel Galván and Rocío Molina show just how fluid such dialogue has become.

Modern and contemporary dance emerged as a creative force in Spain in the 1970s and 80s, at first in Barcelona (where the Institut del Teatre served as a focal point), and in Madrid, later spreading to other major urban areas. The boom years during the 1990s, when international festivals began to present Spanish contemporary dance, and the Centro Nacional de Nuevas Tendencias Escénicas offered vital support at home, were a period of growth for established choreographers. It was the beginning of an international dialogue that proved crucial when the financial crisis in 2008 resulted in ongoing drastic cutbacks in public funding for the arts, making it impossible for many companies to survive. Rethinking ways to create and share work with audiences became an urgent task. Collectives and project-based groups led by individual choreographers developed new strategies for survival. Brussels, Berlin, Amsterdam, London… mobility is still essential for Spanish dancemakers as well as performers, who are valued in dance companies worldwide as impassioned, committed, personal movers, with excellent training and a special musicality.

Regular access to working and performing space to forge an ongoing relationship with audiences is a crucial factor in developing a dance culture. Since 2006 Barcelona´s Mercat de les Flors, now under the direction of choreographer Àngels Margarit, has been a reference for contemporary dance in Spain, with an intensive and varied dance and movement arts program. Other resources in the city include La Caldera de les Corts Center for Creation, supporting new dance through residencies, workshops and a wide variety of activities for all ages, and La Poderosa. Farther north, in Celrà, Girona, residencies are highly coveted at L’animal a l’esquena, a place for creative reflection directed by María Muñoz and Pep Ramis (Mal Pelo), known for their idiosyncratic movement, theatrical poetry and imagery.

Under new leadership by Natalia Álvarez since 2016, Madrid’s Teatros de Canal and the 9-studio Centro de Danza Canal, began an ambitious program for dance that has already begun to galvanize the profession and dance audiences in the city. Coreógrafos en Comunidad (Sharon Fridman, Jesús Rubio, Babirusa Danza, Camille Hanson and Mey-ling Bisogno) work with the Conde Duque Cultural Center, another hub for contemporary dance in Madrid. Festivals can bring new dance to wider audiences. The network for dance in non-conventional spaces, Red Acieloabierto, now includes twelve of them, spanning the country´s geography. Small independent theatres are another resource for adventurous contemporary work.

Contemporary dance in Spain still has issues with visibility but the shift towards greater community involvement and audience development is making it more familiar to the general public. Museums are also embracing this new exchange.

Johan Inger’s Carmen is a visionary retelling of mythic anduniversal elements of passion and violence. Joaquín Collado (Spain, 1991) is the founder and director of Antes Collado Company, founded in 2017 as a shared space for creation. Collado has represented Spain in the Biennale di Venezia and in the 18th Young Creators Biennale of Europe and the Mediterranean at Tirana (Albania). Collado also received the AISGE Foundation Prize at Madrid Choreographic Contest 2017, which allows Joaquín Collado to travel to Washington DC in 2018 and present a site-specific work. The Prize also grants him the opportunity to participate in the International Choreographers Residency Program at the American Dance Festival during a six-week period in North Carolina.

Author, director and performance artist Angélica Liddell was born in Figueres, Spain, in 1966. In 1993, she founded the Atra Bilis Teatro and has since created more than 20 productions with them. Her plays have been translated into various languages, and she has won several prizes, including the Silver Lion for Theatre at the Venice Biennale in 1993. As an avant-garde, radical and uncompromising artist, the hallmarks of her work are social criticism, heartrending expressionism, purity and the search for meaning through pain and subversion. In addition to theatrical texts, she also writes poetry and narrative, and creates performances. For “La casa de la fuerza”, she received the 2012 Spanish National Award for Dramatic Literature.

Crossroads (Choreographies) is a multidisciplinary project - curated by Raquel Peula and Francisco Ramallo - that explores the idea of movement. Artist Rosana Antolí brings us a “collective choreography” with a new perception of transit and moving identities. The space and the circular structures filling it, establish an itinerary that incorporates old codes and new interpretations. The spectator is inevitably transformed into another element in transit provoking further possibilities for reflection where physical movements – and encounters – lead to psychological shifts. To think is to move.

Parallel events to the art project will include a discussion panel as well as a workshop by the artist and a presentation by the curators.

“VERSOS OLVIDADOS” BY ANGELITA MONTOYA The passionate and soulful vocalist Angelita Montoya, daughter of dancer Antonio Montoya and singer Antonia Rodríguez, La Negra, belongs to one of the most wellknown flamenco linages, the Montoyas. Since making her debut at the age of nine in the Flamenco Show “Nuevo Día”, she has worked with Familia Montoya, Fernanda de Utrera, Chocolate, Camarón, Chano Lobato, Manuela Carrasco and Pastora Galván, among others. For this program, she will present “Versos olvidados” (Forgotten Verses), a tribute to the women poets of the Generation of 1927 who have long been forgotten. With music by Alejandro Cruz Benavides, she will be accompanied by Benavides on piano and Fran Cortés on guitar.

As a highlight of the 2017-2018 season, Chamber Music Charleston (CMC) is pleased to announce a thrilling collaboration with the Música en Segura Festival in Spain. Two of the festival’s guest artists, musicians Miguel Colom and Daniel Broncano, will perform in Charleston . The Frick Collection gives Forma Antiqva the opportunity to debut in NYC with a delightful concert engaging the countertenor Carlos Mena. The repertory will be based in transcriptions of Spanish and Italian dances, selected and adapted for continuo consort (harpsichord, theorbo and baroque guitar) by the Zapico brothers, co-founders of Forma Antiqva. Carlos Mena will sing the most outstanding pieces of the Spanish and Italian 18th century repertory.

The series features two concerts that highlight works by female composers with cultural roots in the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas.

A tribute to composer Marianna Martínez (1744–1812) will be performed on March 8. A rare concert featuring her music, and a lecture devoted to her life and times, will bring attention to an overlooked female composer from the Hispanic diaspora. This concert will be curated by Elizabeth Weinfield and feature musicians from Sonnambula. “The Extraordinary Life of Teresa Carreño” (1853–1917) concert will take place on May 10 at the Academy of Arts and Letters, and will be co-curated by mezzo-soprano, Anna Tonna and Dr. Robert Osborne, Professor at Vassar College. The program will weave together a narrative expressing Carreño’s personal and artistic life alongside music and narrated text.

Bands from Spain will participate in the upcoming edition of South by Southwest, which will take place in March 2018 in Austin, Texas

Inaugurated in 1987, the South by Southwest conglomerate of festivals and conferences has become the largest event for the music industry. In the 2018 edition, more than 15,000 music professionals will be present, including record labels, managers, and industry press who will have the opportunity to attend almost 2,000 concerts. Among them, six Spanish bands will play in the concerts organized by Sounds From Spain: Christina Rosenvinge, Bad Gyal, Los Wilds, Joe Crepusculo, Neuman, The Zephyr Bones.
