Unos van a deshacerse de lo que ya no desean o les ocupa lugar; otros a buscar lo que necesitan o ansían; no pocos, a socializar. La iniciativa nació en Buenos Aires hace un par de años (ver recuadro) y rápidamente se extendió fronteras afuera. Son mercados sin dinero –conocidos como Gratiferias, casi una marca registrada– donde se puede hallar desde ropa y calzado, semillas, plantas, herramientas, electrodomésticos, libros, muebles y discos, hasta servicios como un corte de pelo, una clase de yoga o un masaje tailandés sin que medie otro interés que el mero hecho de “dar”. La condición es que el producto esté limpio y funcione. Casi siempre de carácter nómade, las convocatorias se realizan por medio de las redes sociales, y de a poco van surgiendo algunos puntos fijos. Aquí va una guía para saber cómo es esta forma de consumo sustentable.
Some come to get rid of things they no longer want or have room to keep. Others come in search of something they want or need. Plenty come to socialize. The initiative began in Buenos Aires a few years ago (see sidebar) before quickly spreading across the country’s borders. These “moneyless markets” – known as Gratiferias or Free Fairs – offer clothing, footwear, seeds, plants, tools, appliances, books, furniture, records and even services like haircuts, yoga classes and Thai massages, all provided by people with no other interest but the spirit of giving. The only condition is that the product has to be clean and in working order. Most of the fairs are nomadic, with notifications going out via social media, but fixed locations are starting to crop up. The following is a guide to this form of sustainable consumption.
