VOLUME 2: 2013 COVER BY BOB JONES

October will bring back SPACE 4 ART’s spectacular event ADJACENT POSSIBLE. Local artists, scientists and educators have been working hard to create original art experiences that will explore our region’s fascination in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). The weekend of October 12th is shaping up to be our largest, most ambitious event of the year! If you haven’t been down to the East Village recently, this is the time!!

When I first came to SPACE 4 ART in January, I kept hearing the artists here in the East Village talk about the concept of the Adjacent Possible, an idea that keeps cropping up in the works of this particular arts community. With its philosophical roots in science and reinterpreted to apply to the arts, the true definition of term seemed elusive to me for quite some time. Initially, I simply couldn’t connect how cell mutations and their biological structure could be applied to synergy in the arts. I struggled with idea until I recently found a moment of clarity as I stood at a confluence, where two streams meet to converge becoming the source of a new river. There before my eyes were two separate, fully realized entities that had forged their own paths through the world, coming together in a turbulent way to create something all together new. Listening to the deafening roar of the churning waters, I became mesmerized as the rivers contents moved swiftly downstream. It was in that moment that my mind recalled the Adjacent Possible and its complexities were suddenly clear to me. My personal ‘aha’ moment! Adjacent Possible is very much like that place when the two rivers merge. A new space created as the two entities collide. Together, they are filled with more potential, greater energy and vastly expanded ideas of what the future may bring. I began to understand that Adjacent Possible is a tumultuous moment of creation. Truly, an amazing moment where this change and the possibilities seem endless. Understanding this concept of the Adjacent Possible has filled me with great excitement. I am waiting breathlessly to experience how San Diego’s artists, scientists and educators will transform the East Village in October. I hope you will join us as we embrace cutting edge science, traditional art forms and today’s technology. Perhaps you’ll find your own ‘aha’ moment during ADJACENT POSSIBLE II.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ROY DE VRIES

ROY DE VRIES - OTHERNESS CONSIDERED

Roy de Vries has been painting since he was a student at Miami Senior High School. His fascination with human form started then as well. His interest grew as he went on to college in Albuquerque and has blossomed since he became a tenant at Space 4 Art. Currently, Roy adopts an inquisitive posture in relating human form and ponders questions concerning human sexuality, especially within the categories of androgyny and homophilic attraction. In his paintings, he compels the viewer to consider the categories that are accepted as the norm, to the extent that those categories may be brought to a kind of equilibrium.

Images from HEAD ON! Series - Crayon on Acrylic or Canvas - 2.5’ x 3.5’ Viewing his paintings may disturb some, but may at the same time arouse sensibilities at one time obscured. The viewer may arrive at a point of discontinuity when the works are seen in an artificially created context, to the extent that resolution may be found in psychic spaces that were theretofore not suspected or even apprehended. The element of surprise could generate particular states of reconciliation within the psychic spaces the viewer entertains. Questions may arise that indicate a kind of dialectic of opposites. The intended questions Roy hopes may surface as the viewer draws nearer may fall in the domain of androgyny and the reconciliation of opposed categories.

“The adjacent possible is a kind of shadow future, hovering on the edges of the present state of things, a map of all the ways in which the present can reinvent itself. The strange and beautiful truth about the adjacent possible is that its boundaries grow as you explore them. Each new combination opens up the possibility of other new combinations.” Writer, Steven Johnson describing Biologist Stuart Kaufman’s Theory for which the performance was named

YOUTH STEAM LOOK FOR DETAILS ON THE LAUNCH OF OUR NEW HIGH SCHOOL WORKSHOP SERIES TO BE ANNOUNCED IN OCTOBER. There is no question that STEM education is a vital part of this country’s edge but many educators and scholars would argue that STEM is missing a key component of creativity that is critical to empowering a competitive and innovative workforce- those skills are summarized under the letter “A” for Arts. Global competition is rising and the STEAM movement is a way for the U.S. to maintain its position as the most innovative country in the world. What is the role that art and design can play in scientific research? STEM, on its own, can seem dry and boring, missing a large swath of the population because of its reputation for being intimidating, uninspiring and male-dominated. Add an “A” and suddenly we’re talking about STEM + innovations! It’s the ‘STEAM’ engine of ideas- the stuff of science fiction- the stuff that drives progress and saves the world. Art and design can drive STEM education and research to new heights.

YOUTH STEAM COLLABORATOR:

INFORMED ARTISTS SERIES STARTED EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE INFORMED ARTISTS SERIES PLANS TO ASSIST EMERGING ARTISTS WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO HELP THEM DEVELOP AS WORKING ARTISTS. Nearly half of San Diego’s emerging artists are self-employed and yet they struggle with basic business skills to market themselves, sell their ideas and find their audiences. They share the challenge of earning enough from their art to survive in San Diego’s high-rent region. They also share the challenge of blending creative vision with business savvy -- two skills that are often seen as diametrically opposed. The Informed Artist Series, Artist Open Critiques and other Space 4 Art artist’s series allow for the regions creative community to think entrepreneurially through practical, fun and shared resources. Programs like these are critical to keeping San Diego’s creative economy in the region and contributing to the regions innovative business community.
