The Miraculous Prayer

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this very special one. Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then, in our merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favor will be granted. D. S.

40TH ANNUAL EVANS ART GUILD SHOW WINNERS

More than 40 artists participated in the outdoor show held Sunday, July 7, on the grounds of the Evans Historical Society. This show was the 40th annual summer exhibition to be presented by the Evans Art Guild. Classical music was provided by Dr. Linda Dimitroff (Rochester) and Mary White-Benz. The Historical Society’s museum was open so that visitors could enjoy the collection of early Evans memorabilia. Refreshments were provided by the Most Precious Blood youth group. Show judge was George Grace, a well known artist in Western New York. He is a past president of the Buffalo Society of Artists and present co-owner of Meridan Art Gallery on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo. Artist Winner Awards were presented by Town Supervisor Keith Dash. Supervisor Dash also presented an Evans Town Proclamation to the Evans Art Guild to Chester Dimitroff, president and original founder of the Evans Art Guild. The following are the 40th Annual Evans Art Guild Show award winners: Best of Show—Tricia Butski Oil/Acrylics 1st prize- Joseph Lesinski 2nd prize-Barney Kuzara 3rd prize- Ethelyn Lyman Honorable Mention-Barb Watkins Watercolor 1st prize- Mary Ann Jankowski 2nd prize-Chester Dimitroff 3rd prize- Mary Ellen Hanna Pastels 1st prize- Jean Pauley 2nd prize- Walter S. In the winter of 1973, four young, local, aspiring artists met in the home of Chester and Dolly Dimitroff: Paul Von Buhr, Brother Marion Santoro, Gene Whitefield (Capatno), and Chester Dimitroff. The purpose of the meeting was to establish the Evans Art Guild. During the next few years there were art workshops on Monday nights, figure drawing with models at least once a month, and a lively exchange of creative criticism, discussion, and good humor. Monthly meetings and workshops were held all over town including a chicken coop on Sturgeon Point Road, churches, fire halls, and parks. Art education for young students was supported and encouraged by early members (and art teachers) of the guild, such as Roberta Baer, Therese Brodie, Florence Duncan, Margaret Greene, Randall Grimm, Donald Haug, Sally Patterson, and Paul Von Buhr. Early supporters of the EAG Outdoor Art Festival were the Town of Evans Historical Society, Robert R. Catalino—Supervisor of the Town of Evans, Angola Odd Fellows, Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce, Marine Midland Band Western, Ryan Homes, Heimburg Funeral Home, Super Duper Grand View Market, Corrine’s Restaurant, Metrics Foreign Car Repair, Evans National Bank, Highland Plaza Super Market, Carl E. Barrett General Insurance, Stu and Bob’s Snack Bar, L and L Fencing Company, Mickey Rats, A. F. Shultz and Company Plumbing Hardware Appliances, Mansion Art School, Furnco Construction, Green Gables Retirement Home, Derby Pharmacy, Hamburg Art Supply, New Woodbine, Sam’s Lumber Company, Lake Shore Chrysler-Plymouth, South Towns Lincoln Mercury, Oswald’s Bakery, Engler Lumber, and many other members of the Chamber of Commerce and individuals. Over the next 40 years, these artists and the art guild have influenced many generations of young student artists and have produced public art in the Derby post office, town hall, several churches, and public areas. In addition, the Evans Art Guild Calendars have continued since 1989 to showcase the art of members of the Guild and the history of Evans. An amazing total of over 280 pen and ink drawings represent community events, buildings, and people from the surrounding area, including the building of the post office, old town hall, and the opening of the Grandview Theater. This year’s celebration of our 40th Anniversary recognizes the contributions of acting founders Chester Dimitroff and Gene Whitefield, and all the former members and founders. Monthly workshops featuring different artistic techniques, an Evans Art Guild art show at the Enjoy the Journey Art Gallery of West Seneca, and future events such as the October Art Walk and Anniversary Dinner, and the 40th Anniversary Outdoor Art and Craft Show on July 7 are and have been a part of our year-long anniversary celebration. ST. MARY OF THE LAKE STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO COMPOST

Students at St. Mary of the Lake learned how to compost. During lunch times, students from the garden club set up pails and signs to tell of the many kinds of food that may be recycled. They would then empty the pails into a large composting bin to begin the break down process. They also planted seeds in early spring to grow different types of fruits and vegetables. Pictured above are the students who participated in the garden club, Savannah Zeltman, Isabella Watkins, Julia Josker, Miss Markel, Chloe Kurdziel, Grace Lauber, and Dante Guizzotti. JOANNA MCKINNEY OF ANGOLA RECEIVES PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP AT SUNY OSWEGO

SUNY Oswego has awarded an $18,800 Presidential Scholarship to Joanna McKinney of Angola. The award recognizes past academic achievement and potential for success. McKinney, from Lake Shore Central Senior High School, has reserved a place in the freshman class for the fall semester. She is scheduled to begin classes Aug. 26. SUNY Oswego honored more than 600 incoming students with merit scholarships. Outstanding first-year students entering Oswego are offered Presidential Scholarships ($4,700 a year for up to four years), $6,000 Deans' Awards ($1,500 a year for up to four years) or $3,000 Merit Awards ($750 a year for up to four years). First-year students who have completed the strongest academic programs with the highest grade averages and standardized test scores are invited to become Presidential Scholars. Students receiving the $18,800 scholarships have average high school grade averages of 94 and average SAT scores of 1240. The awards are part of about $4 million in merit scholarship money offered at SUNY Oswego. These funds are in addition to the more than $80 million in need-based grants, loans, work-study and scholarship awards that SUNY Oswego students receive annually. Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top public regional universities in the North for 2013, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2013 college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges," as well as its 2013 list of "best value" colleges and universities nationally. A 152-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls about 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
