Lookin’ Good! Congratulations to the shops along 7441-7447 Broadway for being chosen as Waldo’s Best for November! It is amazing how much difference new, efficiency windows and contemporary doors and locks can make. When you add a fresh coat of paint the entire building is transformed. The enhanced look enticed Brookside Betty’s, a new clothing store (7443), to relocate to Waldo! The existing businesses also benefiting from the face-lift include Cook Insurance Agency (7447), Hiles Two (7445) and City Looks, LLC (7441). This stretch of businesses offers one-stop shopping for new fashion, protection and decorations for your home as well as a way to look your best. Property owner Diane Botwin of Botwin Commercial Development has been in business for 29 years and thrives to foster and promote strong and stable local businesses. Funds from the Waldo Community Improvement District’s Storefront Improvement Grant program helped supplement the $28,000 project. Thank you all for making Waldo look its best!

Volunteers Help Shepherd’s Center Central Sparkle Located on the corner of 52nd Street and Oak Street, Shepherd’s Center Central has been helping older adults live a healthy, happy, and engaged life for the past 43 years. Executive Director Pam Seymour, a staff of 16 and countless volunteers help make this wonderful organization successful. While maintaining a beautiful house and grounds, Shepherd’s Center is focused on making older adults’ lives a little easier. Volunteers and staff deliver “Meals on Wheels,” teach classes, provide Medicare counseling, transport homebound older adults, and run the office. Normal wear and tear can take its toll on a 100-year-old home. In 2014, Lori Stark and Jayson Seymour led a team of determined volunteers to restore the grounds and make it a neighborhood “showpiece.” Volunteers pulled weeds, cleaned the brush away, and planted bushes, hostas, shrubs and flowers. A beautiful flowering butterfly garden was placed on the North lawn. The new lawn was then dedicated to long-time volunteer Dorothy Phoenix. If you are looking for a great place to volunteer, please contact them at 816-444-1121 or enjoy reading their mission at www.sccentral.org. Thank you, Shepherd’s Center, for all you do for our community. Your attention to detail beautifully shines in Southtown!

KCSourceLink at Southtown Planning Center KCSourceLink is taking its show on the road to better serve entrepreneurs and business owners in all parts of the metro area. KCSourceLink staff will office out of different Resource Partner locations every Tuesday afternoon to better serve each geographic area.** "We've been talking with our KCSourceLink Resource Partners, and we think this will be a great way to bring the resources of the network to the entrepreneur, and to more actively promote our network of 240+ service providers," said Jenny Miller, KCSourceLink network builder. Office hours will be from 1-4 p.m. with no appointments necessary. KCSourceLink staff will meet with business owners, assess their needs and make referrals to the appropriate resources in the KCSourceLink network. Each person will leave with an action plan tailored to their individual situation. The network is made up of nonprofit, government and educational organizations whose services are typically low or no cost. The initial meet with KCSourceLink staff is free. This outreach is in addition to the referral services KCSourceLink provides through the hotline, 816.235.6500, and through the website, www.kcsourcelink.com. Buy a Pie, Help a Child Each year Gillis, a local nonprofit that works with kids and families, raises funds through a pie sale around the holidays. Pies for a Purpose makes giving Tippin's pies easy! Dating back to 1870, Gillis is actually the oldest non-profit in Kansas City. Every $15 gift certificate is redeemable for any flavor Tippin's pie at any metro-area Hen House Market thru January 15, 2016. $6 of every pie purchased will benefit the children and families served at Gillis and partnering center, Marillac.

Trick or Treat Street A special thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make Brookside’s Trick or Treat Street such a success! This year was certainly spooktacular! With more than a thousand little trick or treaters, this year’s was one of the best yet! It was a fun scene to see all the unique costumes and see Brookside fill up with such excitement. This year was extra special with all of the young girls and boys dressed as their favorite Royals player. Everyone was scurrying through to get home with enough time to catch the first pitch of game 4. The unity of Brookside was paralleled to the city’s love for their “boys in blue.” We can’t wait to see everyone out again next year for another fun Halloween!
