Boosting brain power with breakfast Broward County Public Schools is looking to increase student achievement with the Universal-Free Breakfast Program. The Universal-Free Breakfast Program allows Broward County public school students to get breakfast at their schools for free, regardless of their meal eligibility. The program began March 16 and ends June 4. Students can visit their school cafeteria 7:30-8 a.m. any school day through June 4 to enjoy the free breakfast.

Miami Children’s Hospital changes its name Miami Children's Hospital unveiled its new Nicklaus Children's Hospital name on the hospital's 65th anniversary in March. Golf icon Jack Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, attended the ceremony. The name change honors a $60 million pledge from the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation to the Miami Children’s Health System. It will go, in part, to support construction of the Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion and its family-centered intensive care units. Childhood Vaccinations an Important Key to Protecting Health by Dr. Iris Silverberg
Childhood vaccinations are a hot topic these days. Recent reports that several visitors to Florida were diagnosed with measles have raised concerns among healthcare professionals and the public about a possible outbreak in the state. Vaccinations are a safe and effective way to protect children from dangerous infectious diseases. Thanks to immunizations, polio, diphtheria and tetanus (lockjaw) have almost disappeared in the United States, and each year vaccines save an estimated 6 million lives around the world. By safely exposing a child to a very small amount of weakened or killed bacteria or viruses, vaccinations “teach” a child’s immune system to fight back against these invaders. That’s why immunizations provide long-lasting protection against diseases that could result in serious health problems, including disability or death. However, some parents are not vaccinating their children because of misguided concerns about safety. As a result, some dangerous diseases like pertussis (whooping cough) and measles have actually increased in recent years. Numerous scientific studies show that vaccines and their components do not cause autism, ADHD or other childhood problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Institute of Medicine agree that the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks. While allergic reactions or other side effects from vaccinations are extremely rare, be sure to contact your doctor right away if your child develops a fever, breathing difficulties or other serious symptoms. Because of the importance of childhood immunizations, parents may need to provide proof of certain vaccinations before their child can attend day care, preschool or kindergarten in Florida.
Recommended immunizations There are several recommended childhood immunizations, including the following: DTaP, a combination vaccine that protects your child against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. Five doses of the vaccine are given from 2 months through age 4 to 6. DTaP is not given to older children. MMR, a “3-in-1” vaccine that protects your child against measles, mumps, and rubella. Generally, the first dose is given

when a child is 12 to 15 months old, and a second dose at age 4 to 6 years before entering school. IPV (inactivated polio vaccine), which protects against the poliomyelitis virus. Children get four doses of IPV starting at 2 months and continuing to 4 to 6 years. Hepatitis A vaccine, which is recommended for all children older than age 1. A second is given six to 12 months after the first shot. Hepatitis B vaccine, which is given before leaving the hospital, followed by a second shot between 1 and 2 months and a third shot at 6 months. Varicella, which protects against chickenpox. This dose is given between 12 and 15 months, with a second dose at 4 to 6 years. Hib vaccine, which provides protection against meningitis, pneumonia and other diseases. This vaccine is given as early as 2 months of age and the series is completed between 12 and 15 months. PCV vaccine, which protects against pneumococcus, another bacteria that can cause meningitis, pneumonia, and ear infections. The vaccine series is given at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. The last dose is given between 12 and 15 months. RV vaccine, which immunizes a child against rotavirus, is given between 2 and 6 months. Flu vaccine is given annually, starting at 6 months. Two doses of flu vaccine given at least four weeks apart are recommended for children aged 6 months through 8 years who are receiving the vaccine for the first time.

There are also other vaccines available for children who due to their medical condition are susceptible to other infections. Your doctor can help you keep track of your child’s immunizations and send reminders as needed. Remember that if your child misses one shot, you don’t have to start over. Just go back to your doctor so he or she can explain the best way to continue the vaccine schedule. Princesses, Pirates and Preschoolers
M
y neighbors took their daughters to Disney World for the first time recently. When the husband told me they were going, I said, “Oh my gosh, can you take my kids?” He laughed and said, “Can you take mine?” But he doesn’t know what he is in for. Seeing Disney through the eyes of a preschooler is transformational. They still believe in magic, and they are getting to experience the castle, the characters, the shows and the rides from a viewpoint (both physically and mentally) that makes the grandeur of the Disney parks even greater. I like Disney, but without my daughter by my side, I miss half the park. She helps me enjoy what I came to experience. She doesn’t see the crowds along Main Street, she only sees the castle. She can spot costumed characters from a quarter-mile away, but she isn’t concerned with getting an autograph. She only wants to get close enough to wave and maybe say hi. She delights in all the entertainment provided while waiting for a ride, such as the giant blocks and Etch-A-Sketch at Hollywood Studio’s Toy Story Mania, the car-design studio at Epcot’s Test Track and the air-conditioned, indoor playground at Dumbo. A preschooler’s wonder with Disney is contagious. Who can resist getting into the spirit of the Festival of Fantasy Parade, the fireworks or Enchanted Tales With Belle when their child is cheering? Your preschooler will also introduce you to new things, because what doesn’t interest you will fascinate them. My daughter is amazed by Tomorrowland’s PeopleMover, a ride

I’d never ridden before this year. We went on it every day we were at the park, sometimes twice, and I learned something: It is a COOL ride. She also helped me discover all the neat photo and video components in the showroom after our Test Track ride at Epcot. We took photos with cars on the surface of Mars, in a desert with balloons, in front of a giant sun, etc. The 30-minute ride turned into an hour-an-a-half modeling session, and we loved it. Our experience outside of the parks was almost as fun as inside. We didn’t even go to a park on our first day. Instead, we rode the monorail around Disney’s resort loop and enjoyed the pool and the waterslide at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Then we went to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to check out Lilo’s Playhouse Kids Club and enjoy a family-style dinner and kids’ coconut race at ‘Ohana. By the time we got home from watching the Magic Kingdom fireworks show from a boat on the Seven Seas Lagoon, my little one was more than ready for bed – and that was Day 1! The experts at Disney World know family trips can be overwhelming, especially with a 3-year-old. MagicBands, FastPass and Rider Switch If you have not experienced the incredible convenience of MagicBands, you are in for a treat. Disney resort guests can use them to unlock their room, enter a Disney park, and pay for lunch or souvenirs. MagicBands also store your FastPasses, which you can reserve 30 or 60 days in advance to be able to skip the line at your favorite attractions. For parents juggling a child who can’t ride a certain ride, Rider Switch allows them to experience an attraction then switch off with their partner without having to wait in line.
Baby Care Centers Disney World knows what it is like to travel with little ones. Each theme park now has a Baby Care Center that gives families a place to sit down, cool down and relax. It has a small convenience store stocked with stuff you might need for children, such as sunscreen, formula,

Parent’s night out After a day or two with the kids, you might need a break. Disney World offers a safe place to drop your kids while you take in a nice dinner and a show (or a nap). Lilo’s Playhouse Kids Club at Disney’s Polynesian Resort is available to Disney Resort guests and includes a meal and entertainment for kids ages 3-12 from 4:30 p.m. to midnight. Children must be potty trained. Kids Club rates are $15 an hour with a 2-hour minimum, and many of Disney’s Deluxe Resorts have similar Kids Clubs.

Make travel easier Many South Florida families drive to Orlando, but if you are flying and staying in a Disney resort hotel, the free Disney Express makes the trip MUCH easier. Just tag your luggage with the provided Disney tags before your trip. Once you arrive in Orlando, go to the Disney Welcome Center and board the Disney bus to enjoy a free and informative ride to your hotel. Disney will collect your luggage for you and deliver it to your resort room. Before you return home, Disney will send you a notice about your pick-up time (generally 3 hours before your flight). A number of airlines also participate in Disney’s complimentary Resort Airline Check-in Service, so you can check your luggage and get your boarding pass for those airlines at your hotel before you leave.

Go Green for Spring BY GAYLA GRACE
H
ealthy food choices make a difference in how our children feel, think and behave. We can influence their choices based on how we shop and eat ourselves. It’s not always easy to eat green, but it’s helpful to understand what it means and learn how to incorporate it into our diets as often as possible. Eating green, according to the USDA, is defined as consuming organic food or local fresh produce, eating less processed foods, reducing the amount of pesticides used for growing food and making food choices that are eco-friendly for the planet. In order to eat green, you must first learn to shop green. When we connect with and support our hard-working farmers and ranchers who grow and raise our food, we help farmers markets grow, decreasing the need to rely on imported foods. The food we purchase in our grocery stores has been shipped thousands of miles before it arrives. Buying locally grown produce, meats, seafood, cheese or eggs from smallscale family farmers offers fresher, tastier and more nutritious options and helps our farmers stay in business. Organic food is produced without using most of the conventional pesticides or synthetic fertilizers used for other food. To be labeled organic, food must have the USDA Organic seal, which assures consumers that the products meet strict standards. Organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy come from animals that have not been given antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic fruit and produce do not carry the residue of pesticides. A recent article, “When to Go Organic,” in a Consumer Reports health newsletter states it is most important to purchase organic fruits and vegetables to “avoid long-term exposure to pesticide residues,” noting that “rinsing conventional fruit and vegetables doesn’t effectively reduce pesticide residues that are left behind.” It also gives a medium to high priority to purchasing organic poultry, beef and dairy. Eating organic can be expensive. If you strive to purchase seasonal fruits and vegetables that are locally grown and sold at the height of harvest time, they are less costly. It also helps to vary the protein sources in your diet. Replace animal-based protein with plant-based proteins such as nuts or beans for less expense. In addition, look for organic websites that offer coupons and specials to help offset the costs.

Switch off lights when they leave a room. Turn off the water when brushing their teeth. Unplug phone and iPad chargers when not in use. Use recycling bins for paper, plastics and other recyclables. Pack their school lunch in a reusable container such as a lunchbox. Carpool to baseball games, dance practices, church events, etc. Use cloth napkins and towels in the kitchen instead of paper ones. Buy recycled supplies when shopping fo school supplies. Use rechargeable batteries. Grow a vegetable garden in the backyard. Ride the bus to school. Use real dishes and utensils instead of paper plates and plastic utensils. Turn off the TV when no one is watching. Borrow books from the library instead of buying new ones. Green Kid

Living a green life isn’t just for adults. The next generation can be trained from a young age to be good stewards of the Earth and to live a sustainable lifestyle. But what exactly can a preschooler do? Or a preteen? Here are ways to encourage your child to not only reduce, re-use and recycle; but enjoy it.
1.
Are your recycle bins in the garage or the side of the house? A preschooler can run that plastic jug or aluminum can out there for you. To encourage him in this chore, consider a reward like a nickel for each item to show the financial benefits of recycling.
2.
A preschooler can also run the scrap bucket out to the compost bin after supper each evening.
3.
Show your small child how to plant seeds in a flower pot. This will get him started in gardening from an early age.
4.
Kids love things we find repulsive, like worms. An elementary-aged child can start a worm bed. He can re-locate the worms to the garden or flower beds in spring, or sell them as fishing bait. Wal-Mart sells worm bed kits in the sporting goods department.
5.
Give your child a garden row or raised bed to tend. If she’s successful in growing any produce, buy it from her.
6.
If you do not have the space for a garden, encourage your kids to plant tomatoes, herbs or greens in pots on the patio.

Occasionally try a new fruit or vegetable from the produce section of the supermarket or a local farmer’s market. A few suggestions are pomegranate, plantain, coconut, tomatillo or papaya.
Study the food in the supermarket together, asking the following questions: What are the ingredients? Are they natural? Check out the packaging. Does the large box of crackers contain four smaller boxes in which you find individually wrapped packages? How could you more ecologically package the crackers? What are you going to do with all that trash?

Turn your pet food bags into shopping bags. A child old enough to use a sewing machine can handle this project, and once the family has enough, she can sew more to sell.

Keep backyard chickens. Depending on your child’s age, have him collect eggs or care for them entirely. Let him sell the excess to neighbors.

t can be easy being green – just ask Angela Compton. The Boynton Beach mother and vintage style enthusiast is an expert on “greening” one’s living space, especially when it comes to babies. Compton does event design and wedding styling and recently added nursery design to her list of services on Altarnativedesign.com. “My husband and I have been living a green lifestyle for many years,” Compton said. “When my son Jude came along, we really wanted to make the home even safer for him. I had a list of non-negotiables, and then what was reasonable and within our budget.” While most mothers- and fathers-to-be can’t wait to pop a fresh coat of paint on nursery walls just before baby arrives, the type of paint used can be a safety issue for parents and babies. Before her son’s room was designed, Compton painted every wall in the house with non-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint. “Zero-VOC paint with no odor is best,” Compton said. “Anytime we painted with other paints, I got headaches.” A baby’s crib mattress is another potential red flag for harmful chemicals of which to steer clear. “A lot of baby mattresses are made out of polyester and cotton, and cotton has the most pesticides,” Compton said. “I researched an organic mattress that was safe and breathable and discovered Nook Sleep Systems. It was definitely a splurge, but it’s one of the best mattresses you can get. A baby spends so much time in their crib, so this was extremely important to my husband and I to get him a safe mattress. If it’s not in your budget, there are cheaper organic options out there as well.” The materials in the crib frame can also affect baby’s well-being. “I nannied a lot in

the past and noticed when babies are teething, they’ll chew on the rails of their crib,” Compton said. “When I was looking for my son’s crib, I wanted something that was FSC-certified. I wanted a crib with non-toxic paint and a water-based finish.” When it came time to select a changing table, Compton opted for a vintage dresser with a Nook changing pad. “New furniture still releases volatile compounds into the air, while vintage furniture has already had a chance to let off those gases,” Compton said. “I also make sure my son’s sheets are organic, and the wrap I use while wearing him is also organic.” When it comes to laundering baby and family’s clothes, Compton recommends Seventh Generation laundry detergent for her and her husband’s clothes and opts for Babyganics detergent for her son’s clothing. “For cleaning around the house, vinegar and lemon works great, and I also use Mrs. Meyer’s or Seventh Generation products,” Compton said. “While I wish I had time to make my own soaps, it’s just not practical for me or many moms out there, so these organic alternatives are good to have.” Although the bath product aisle in Target or Babies “R” Us would lead one to believe babies can never have enough moisturizer, Compton said it’s best to take the “less is more” approach during bath time. “The less you do to a baby’s skin, the better off you are,” Compton said. “I really try to limit the amount of product I put on his skin. Their skin is so perfect and new. I like California Baby products, though, for my son, and when he was really little, I’d massage lavender oil onto his belly to soothe him at night.” Toys will also likely be part of baby’s room, so Compton emphasizes safety there, too. “All of the baby’s toys and pacifiers are better to be BPA-free,” Compton said. “FSC-certified wooden toys are good, but you have to be careful with wooden toys also because there are still some out there that are toxic. The best wooden children’s toys have a beeswax or waterbased finish. As my son has gotten older, I got him Green Toys from Whole Foods. They’re more expensive, but they’re worth

Our skin is our largest organ, and even if a baby isn’t putting the toy in their mouth, they’re still absorbing it through their skin.” Compton’s top tip for greening the home, however, is not getting too stressed out to reap the benefits a greener lifestyle can bring. “This stuff can consume you, so you have to have a good balance,” Compton said. “You can have a safer home, and you don’t have to be neurotic.” ANGELA’S QUICK TIPS FOR A GREENER BABY NURSERY AND HOME:
✿ “If you’re using disposable diapers, make sure they’re natural and dioxin-free. Dioxin is often the cause of rashes on babies’ skin.” ✿ “Conserve water by turning the faucet off while you’re brushing your teeth, and invest in a lower-flow shower head.”
✿ “Bringing certain houseplants into your living space, such as ferns, can purify air for you.” ✿ “Instead of buying bottled water, use a Brita filter and fill it with water from the sink. If you have a much bigger budget, there are reverse osmosis systems you can invest in.” ✿ “Coconut oil should be in everyone’s home. I make my own deodorant from it combining it with baking soda and arrow root. You can also brush your teeth with it, clean with it and moisturize with it. In fact, coconut oil is great for babies’ skin, so if they need to moisturize, this is a safe way to do it.” ✿ “Opt for glass baby bottles instead of plastic, especially since you will likely be heating up the bottles.” ✿ “While you can purchase organic baby food and I have, you don’t need a fancy baby-food maker to make healthy food for your baby. I cut up fruits and vegetables and steamed them and used an immersion blender. Then I’d freeze the food in silicon ice trays. It saves money and the planet.” ✿ “When registering for baby gifts, if you’re looking for a wide selection of organic options, check out Amazon.com. FAMILY ENTREPRENEURS: Parents, kids build businesses from the ground up BY MELISSA L. TICHAUER

uring a tumultuous time in her life, Melanie Grefe decided to take a leap of faith. Three years
ago, the Hollywood resident packed her two kids in the car and began driving. She ended up in a place that would eventually change her life: Weeki Wachee Springs. Although the trip was both wonderful and healing for her and her children, Grefe was disappointed when she went to buy her daughter, Grace, a mermaid outfit and learned that the gift shop didn’t sell any. A former assistant movie director, Grefe immediately started researching mermaid tails, but she wasn’t satisfied with the results. Taking matters into her hands, she bought nylon spandex fabric and used her basic sewing skills to create something her daughter could wear on an upcoming trip to Disney World. The results were astonishing. “We went to see Ariel, and while we were standing in line, every mom was asking where I’d found the mermaid tail,” Grefe said. “They started asking me for my business card, and that’s when the lightbulb went off to start a business.” Grefe teamed up with a friend who was a seamstress, and together they began brainstorming. They ended up creating several designs for swimmable mermaid tails and tops. After additional research and using her real estate tax money to purchase a higher quality fabric, Grefe brought Magical Mermaid Swimwear to life. “It’s just been about never giving up,” said Grefe, whose mermaid tails and tops for all ages are sold online at Etsy and her website, www.magicalmermaidswimwear.com. “I love being an entrepreneur, and I’m making people happy. I have huge plans for this, and I’m giving it my best to make it a go.”

Grefe is only one of many South Florida entrepreneurial success stories. Sebastian Martinez, a 7-year-old Miami resident, turned his passion for silly socks into his own business, Are You Kidding? While Sebastian is young for an entrepreneur, his mother, Rachel, said she knew at an early age her son was built for business. “Sebastian has always been a little negotiator,” said his mom. “He always had a love for collecting funky socks. After all the money I was spending on socks, one day it occurred to me to ask him if he wanted to design his own. He immediately sat down and started drawing.” Sebastian’s collection has three different three-packs for boys and three for girls. His products can be found on Etsy, Open Sky, and his website, www.areyoukidding.net, as well as Sesame Step in Kendall. Sebastian and his brother, Brandon, were also recently featured on Good Morning America’s “Shark Tank Your Life, Kids Edition” on ABC in New York City. “I like that everybody likes to buy them,” Sebastian said. “You can pull them up so people can see them.” One benefit of running your own business for both Sebastian and his mom is spending time with family and giving back to the community. Sebastian created a special design for Breast Cancer Awareness in October and donated $3,000 to the American Cancer Society. “The best thing is knowing that this is a 100 percent home-grown family business,” said Martinez, whose son was named the youngest pacesetter for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. “Sebastian wants to be able to help others who are less fortunate. You have to teach your kids the importance of helping others and
giving back.” Another South Florida family focused on helping others connect is the mother-son duo Alex and William Georges of Boca Raton. William, 13, is the inventor of the Pezo Pal, a high-tech, smart teddy bear with 700,000 kid-appropriate downloads, including stories and music in different languages. William invented the bear when he was 6, then spent four years perfecting the product before putting it on the market. “We wanted it to teach character because character is everything these days,” said William, whose invention was awarded the Top Toy of the Year and the Kid’s Product of the Year by “Creative Child Magazine.” “The bear teaches different languages and lessons as well as teaching morals and character.” Alex Georges notes that her son’s invention is not only a great teaching tool, but also a way for children to communicate with longdistance relatives or parents in the military. “You can record your voice in cases of parents or grandparents who are not physically with their children,” Georges said. “This toy is part of a movement where parents can help their children build character and promote peace through classic tales and fables that have lessons. The car would have to stay parked in the driveway for the night, as the garage floor was covered with everything, but family harmony is more important. Overall, though, I thought we worked well as a team. Did we have differences of opinion? Yes. Did I go to bed exhausted? You bet. Will I get to be the supervisor for day two of garage cleaning? Like Jessie’s odds of getting a horse for her next birthday, not a chance. Though I had been dreading this huge project, my two supervisors and I shared some special times. Mattie and I pulled out possessions we hadn’t seen in years and Jessie had never seen. One box con-

tained love letters and poems I wrote to Mattie before we were married. Jessie and Mattie laughed when I read one letter aloud. I can’t believe I wrote such mushy stuff, and it worries me a little that I have no recollection of writing it. Jessie said she could part with her tiny red wagon. Mattie, Mrs. Clutterfree, said, “We can’t give that away. That’s where Jessie had her apple sales.” Jessie’s preschool class for 2-year-olds took a field trip to an apple orchard. I had fun picking apples with Jessie, and we filled her bag in no time. When we got home, we decided to have an apple sale. We made a sign “Apples For Sale – Only 25 cents.” Jessie loaded her apples into her little red wagon and set up shop with her newly acquired red and green inventory. I cleared a small bookshelf in our guest room, and it made a perfect display for Jessie’s merchandise. We had so much fun selling and buying apples, learning
about money, giving change and talking about how to run a successful business that we repeated the process after Halloween with Jessie’s trick-or-treat candy. My most sentimental moment came when I pulled a sign away from the wall and found half of a pink, plastic Easter egg. Jessie hid plastic eggs long after Easter had ended. To make hide and seek last
longer, she split each egg in half. I, Mr. Sentimental, said, “Oh, I’m keeping this.” Of course, Mrs. Clutterfree’s immediate response was, “Trash!” Now, I admit, a half of a plastic egg covered with dust and spider webs doesn’t make the best keepsake, but I’m not a hoarder. OK, maybe I’m a hoarder of memories. The garage clean-up will probably take several more days. Will I find the other half of the pink egg? Mattie better hope not, because if I do, I’m saving it. I’ll store it in Jessie’s tiny red wagon. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments. Happy Easter.

have to practice a level of professionalism. So I eased her mind and said, “Give it to me straight, I know my daughter.” The teacher proceeded to tell me (politely) that my daughter has to work on her delivery and how she talks and treats her friends. For example, instead of saying to her friend, “You should try and color in the lines like the teacher said,” she says, “What you need to do is pay attention and do your work just like the teacher said. Now, color in the lines.” I nodded and said, “Thank you. I’m on it.” As I walked away, I felt guilty. Yes, guilty. What I noticed was that maybe, just maybe, my daughter is addressing her friends they way I address her at home when I’m aggravated. You know when you try to ask your kids to do something nicely like five times, then on the sixth time, it sounds like a demon took over your body (veins coming out of your neck, teeth clenched – you know). In that moment I TRULY understood what leading by example meant. In my

loud moms » loud mind, I understood how to lead by example, but clearly I missed this one. I sat my daughter down and talked to her about the honor roll and why she was not going to be on the Headmaster’s Honor Roll (the teacher did a great job explaining this as well). Then I asked her how much she valued her friends and if she wanted to continue to have friends in her life as she got older. She couldn’t picture her life without her friends, and I saw a light bulb go off, which made me smile. This was a lesson for both of us. She learned that she needed to speak softer and be kinder to her friends. I realized that my delivery “at times” really stinks and that I have to make a conscious effort to breathe and then open my mouth (which you ALL know is almost impossible - but I’m trying). I was scared at first because I really thought that I was raising a “mean girl.” But in fact, my daughter was learning from watching me – which is why we ALL have to do a better job at practicing what we preach and leading by example. Remember that those little eyes and ears are always around us, soaking it all in like sponges.

Moving Day: Old House - New House BY KAREN DEERWESTER, ED.S. Moving day is challenging. Things are changing in your child’s world. All will be new, exciting and unpredictable. Young children are sometimes thrown off by change and need very practical strategies to understand and assert age-appropriate control. They also need explicit reminders of all the things that never change – that they are loved and safe. As you lead your child through change, find the right words to reassure and simplify what feels overwhelming at the moment. Try something as simple as, “Home is wherever I’m with you.” Or include a pretend game, ‘Let’s hide little balls of love in all the corners to make this house ours.” It’s always OK to miss the “old house” while creating a positive focus on the “new.” Some children need time to put down new roots. Explain “every day we make this house more and more our home.”
Take “time out” – not a discipline time out, but time out from the stress and busy-ness of moving. Be patient when everything feels like it’s falling apart, when parents and children are tired or trying to juggle all the extra demands of moving. Stop for cuddle and comfort time when your child is losing it, or when you are feeling overwhelmed. Efficiency is great except when kids are in the picture. Young children still need your time and attention, even more so when big changes are underway. Include your child in the packing and unpacking routine. Even if they are at school while you do most of the packing and unpacking, let them know what you’re doing so things don’t mysteriously disappear and reappear. Show them the labels on boxes. Children can even draw pictures on the boxes to label each of the rooms. Let your child pack a few of their things. And be sure to set aside special boxes for your child’s most important belongings – favorite toys, books and clothing. Prepare your child with visits or stories about the new house. Young children gain ownership and confidence with hands-on experiences. Walk through the new rooms or look at pictures together online. Plan things you’ll do in the new house – first playdates, parties, a tree swing, a new garden area. Give your child something to look forward to that he’s in charge of, such as paint colors, furniture placement or the choice of child’s art for the walls. Finally, count down to moving day on a calendar or white board with markers. Make photo books to help your child understand the sequence of events and to help with the emotional transition. One book might be called Moving Day, with your child taking pictures of the big day. The other

Use pictures showing what’s the same and different between the two houses: from outside, the front of the houses, the inside entrances, the kitchens, the bedrooms, bathrooms or bath time, play areas, even the house and street number. Your child can then revisit the old house or re-live moving day as often as he needs to feel confident and safe through the changes. Add some “new house games” to help your child’s transition. Try a New House Scavenger Hunt that connects the old routines with the new routines. For example, find 12 removable window decals that are hidden on the windows; find assorted cleaning supplies, such as a mop, bucket and brooms; find the “welcome box” hiding somewhere in the new house holding new address labels, luggage tags, welcome home signs, Happy Dreams hot chocolate packets and Hershey kisses. And don’t be too quick to “organize” everything – save a few of those moving boxes for inside or outside box play. Most importantly, you are your child’s “home” in the world, not a house, not a street, certainly not a city. If you stay connected and as stress-free as possible, your child will find his calm center through any change. Consistency and predictability are the source of peace and calm in a home. Try to maintain bedtime routines and prepare in advance so mornings don’t throw off the entire day. Take extra care of your child’s favorite toys and most loved objects. New is exciting, but the old has a special place in your child’s heart. Let’s Give Them Something to Laugh About BY MARGARET SAGARESE
Preteens are notoriously moody, pouty and testy. The good news is, they turn funny. During the tweenage years, their sense of humor pops up. As brains develop and vocabulary expands, kids grasp and deliver puns, jokes and even satire. “These kids really make me laugh!” confessed a seventh-grade teacher from California during a time when I questioned teachers about why they chose to teach middle schoolers. Funny, comedians, yes, but on the other hand, preteens think their bodies are no laughing matter. Undergoing a mind-boggling major growth spurt, arms and legs, heads and torsos grow fast and often out of proportion. Between the ages of 10 and 15, kids grow on average 12 inches in height and gain 20 to 30 pounds. If kids all grew together, this might be less
traumatic, but they don’t. A typical middle school class includes kids that look downright childlike and others that look like they belong in high school. Sometimes, best friends turn into odd couples, one so outpacing the other in developing that they are left with little in common but memories. Tweens look in the mirror and stress out no matter what they look like. Reassuring your preteen that he or she is perfect falls on deaf ears. A better approach is to tap their funny bone to make light of their appearance anxieties. So here are some ideas you can introduce to lighten their load. Let’s give our preteens something to laugh about!
A kiss is more than a kiss. Television shows from “CSI” to “NCIS” to “Bones” have added to our awareness of forensic science. That each of us has an individual, unlike-anybodyelse fingerprint is common knowledge. Yet few of us are likely to know that every person on earth has a unique “lip print.” This tidbit is from Marc Abramson’s book “This Is Improbable Too: Synchronized Cows, Speedy Brain Extractors, and More WTF Research.” The study of such prints even has a name: cheiloscopy. Not only does each of us have our own lip print, but if we blot our lipstick-drenched mouths on paper, experts can also distinguish between male and female lips. Getting back to forensics, though, researchers at the University of Valencia in Spain published a study called “Luminous Lip-prints as Criminal Evidence.” They found certain long-lasting lipsticks ruined the chances of being able to identify lips.

Back in 1978, researchers discovered that eyebrows played a role in expressing human emotions. Raised or arched eyebrows signaled friendliness or appeasement. A year later, studies found that lowered eyebrows meant a person felt angry. Giving kids tips to identify emotions couldn’t be timelier. Young adolescents experience feelings so strongly due to hormones firing that they have trouble putting names to emotions. A child can be upset and not be able to tell you why. A parent needs to go through a list – are you angry? sad? frustrated? – to help them understand and “label” strong feelings. Watching eyebrows can be a surprising way to assist them as they navigate the world of emotions. Now, add the fact that eyebrows sing, too. A team of Danish and Americans concluded that eyebrows go higher when a person sings a high-pitched note. I wonder if eyebrows lift when a person plays a high note on a saxophone or trumpet – now there’s a science experiment for your preteen.
The Secret to Weight Loss – Twinkies? A nutrition professor named Mark Haub at Kansas State University wanted to go on a diet and make a point to his students. He invented what could be called “the ultimate sweet tooth diet.” Professor Haub ate nothing but Twinkies, Little Debbies, Ho-Hos, Doritos and Oreos. What kind of a diet is that?! Apparently a successful one. Seems impossible, but he did lose weight. He consumed only 1,800 calories daily, down from his usual intake of 2,500. At the outset of his unconventional weight-loss scheme, he estimated a loss of approximately 1-2 kilos a week (about 4 pounds.) After 10 weeks, he shed 12 kilos, his bad cholesterol and triglycerides dropped and good cholesterol increased. The lesson he wanted to teach was that

The cross eyes have it. “Don’t cross your eyes … they’ll get stuck that way.” That is an age-old warning as well as a book title by Drs. Aaron Carroll and Rachel Vreeman. And it’s one order from your parents that you can ignore without dire consequences. There is no evidence, medical or scientific, that crossing your eyes tempts fate to make you permanently cross-eyed. According to the experts in ophthalmology, the worst that can occur is that you can give yourself eye strain in these muscles. That strain might bring on some pain, or possible eye spasms and blurring of your vision – all temporary effects.
How green is your nose gunk. Tweens love gross, so talking about green snot is right up their alley. Flu season comes around every year as does the theory that if your nose drippings are green, then you need to go to the doctor and get an antibiotic. According to Drs. Aaron Carroll and Rachel Vreeman, when you have an infection, your body sends off a type of white blood cells called “neutrophils” that eat your germs, eat too many and explode. Enzymes spew out and mix with stuff in your nose, turning it green. Researchers say you can’t tell by that whether an infection is viral or bacterial, so green explains nothing. Weave these tidbits into conversation. Or bring them up when group projects or science experiments come along. Imagine what kind of a crazy diet your son could invent and test out. A final fact: Ears keep growing throughout life, and old men have bigger ears than old women. But I wouldn’t tell your preteen about their eternally growing ears. They are worried enough already. Mr. King rocks because after retiring from being a police officer, he’s courageous enough to have taken the great challenge to help, educate, love and support our Autism cluster children and angels. It takes a lot of patience and determination to do this, and he tries his best daily to help my son and his classmates. I can’t express in words my gratitude and admiration. HE ROCKS!!!
My teacher, Kimberly Greenfield, rocks because she makes me want to work hard, and she has helped me love to read. Two weeks ago, she was hit by a car and has not been to school. My heart is broken, and I’m praying that she is coming back next week. I know that she rocks because since she has been gone, I just don’t love to learn in the same way! Please help me tell her how awesome she is! Everyone in our class misses her so much, and we want her back!
Mrs. Rafuls challenges the students and encourages them to work hard. She is very loving and sweet toward them, and they love her. She talks with them when they fall short and encourages them to do Raixa Rafuls better, instead of just automatically Third grade doling out punishment. I am very Miami Christian grateful that she is my daughter’s School teacher, and that my daughter is being inspired to do her best and accomplish much.
