SVMEDITORIAL

fromtheeditor UNDER THE FALL SKY Fall is upon us, and it is time once again for one of the biggest fundraisers of the year in Columbus, the Steeplechase. Taking place in Pine Mountain, and always the first Saturday in November, Steeplechase is running its 31st year. In this issue SVM highlights one of the biggest, and often most fun part of the races, the HATS! From colorful to unique or classic, we know it is important to put together a look that will turn heads. The perfect hat will do just that, especially if you are looking to enter the SVM Hat Contest. Aside from the fashion, the Steeplechase has many more elements that make this event fun and important to our community. The fundraiser has helped support the arts in the community tremendously with great success. In this issue we spoke with 2015 Race Director, Marie Arnold, about her duties of director, as well as this year’s art designer, and the importance of Steeplechase to her. During fall many people often have one thing in common: worrying about the perfect gifts to give during the holidays. Look no further than

SVM’s gift guide in this issue. It is the perfect way to shop local and find unique gifts for the special people in your life. Speaking of local, in this issue we feature a former Brookstone student turned artist, Kate Mullen, who now lives in Charleston, South Carolina. SVM also spoke with Wesley KerFox, co-founder and chief marking executive of the app Piper, about how the app got it’s startup here in Columbus. From the great support to the talented and innovative people who call Columbus home, there is always something this town has to offer. We highlight some of the great events in the area in this issue, like the 2015 Jim Blanchard Leadership Forum. It was once again a success, as the forum welcomed back Former President George W. Bush and his family. We combined the best of fall - the outfits and those beautiful golden hues - when shooting this issue’s fashion, more than 10 pages of the latest trends . Though our models, stylists, and photographer ended the day with dozens of

Hot, summer days? Or chilly winter days? Hot summer days! Warm weather immediately puts me in a good mood. What are the qualities that draw you to people that you can base a friendship on? I am really drawn to people who have a good sense of humor and are comfortable in their own skin. What’s your can’t-live-without beauty item? My Dior Addict It Lash mascara. I have tried so many and it is definitely my favorite. Whose wardrobe would you most like to possess and why? I would love to have Chanel’s wardrobe from the new TV show Scream Queens. It is filled with so many great colors and statement pieces such as brightly colored furs. What quote do you live by? “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m Possible!”

N LILY LEEBER

Accessory you always wear: Jewelry is my favorite. I love layering lots of necklaces and stacking bracelets. What’s your guilty food pleasure? I got few, but what I love the most is popcorn. Especially cheddar and caramel corn. SVM

bug bites, it was worth it. We hope you look forward to Steeplechase and getting ready for the holidays, a time for celebration. SVM is all about celebrating Columbus. Cheers!

How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as classic with a pop. I like to mix simple pieces with things that make a statement.

Who is your favorite designer and why? Elizabeth and James for sure. I love how they take something that could be simple but add a flare to it. What do you consider your most Southern characteristics? My love for soul food and hanging out at the lake and farm. What magazine do you read besides SVM? SVM is my favorite, but I also like to read Teen Vogue, In Style, and People. thismonth’smail NATURAL BORN WOMAN If I were to wish for the perfect synthesis of my many interests into one article, it would take the form of Barbara Bush (August 2015). She absolutely captivated me with the way she wove together beauty, her work with Global Health Corps and her family affairs. Thank you for this great interview, what an incredible role model for young women around the world. ERIN L.- COLUMBUS, GA. It was very refreshing to read about a woman like Barbara Pierce Bush (August 2015). The article was a wonderful tribute to the Bush family, which I always admired. I love how she recognizes the need to get young professionals out of their industries and onto the front lines of global health. I’m very pleased that the ‘me generation’ (mine) has been replaced by a millennial generation much more focused on others. Keep up the good work. S. BROWN - VIA EMAIL As a busy businesswoman with a sense of style, I love picking up SVM for a bit of escape once every other month. This is my treat and a great source of information (I love the social events) on fascinating

and dynamic women in Columbus and in the world. Your article on Barbara Pierce Bush (August 2015) was no exception. I hesitated, however when I saw that you had an editorial on Barbara P. Bush. I am sure I speak for others, as well as myself, when I say I’m completely exhausted by the Bush family. I’m glad Barbara has a laudable initiative in the world of global health, but knowing who the father is I have my doubts. After all Bush ran for office claiming he was a uniter not a divider. Even though he received fewer popular votes than Gore, he quickly claimed he had the mandate from the American people to push his right-wing agenda. J. ROSS A. - COLUMBUS, GA.

INSTAGRAM EXPRESS I was very excited to see an article about Kevin Systrom (August 2015). In our modern, technology-driven world, a few important individuals have changed the way we live. With each new, great tech idea, our world becomes more interesting and complex. Many young people may know the names of the biggest technology and Internet-based companies, but do they know the story of the creators and businesses behind names like Netflix, Google, YouTube, and Facebook?. Great job for bringing this interesting individual to light. PATRICIA M, AUBURN, AL. My mom and I were eager to read the AugustSeptember issue of SVM, and had high hopes when I saw that there was an article on Instagram’s Kevin Systrom. For me, Instagram is a daily vice and I think it transformed photography into a form of communication. The main reason why I like it, is because a photo shared through Instagram carries with it a

message of what someone’s doing, watching, thinking, feeling or viewing; the time stamp is right here, right now. The beauty of Instagram is that it is almost like a mini blog post in itself (with an awesome visual component), leading to engagement. My love goes to Kevin and his great creation! K. CLARK, VIA EMAIL.

PIXEL PERFECT It is great that I can view SVM on my tablet. Obviously, the experience is very different from reading the print magazine, but we are saving trees, getting a better visual experience, and are part of the future of the industry. However, because I am of an older generation, the change will take some time for me. Overall I’m delighted by this new reading experience. ESTHER B. COLUMBUS, GA.

rent trends. We also offer several individualized hair treatments that are not only all natural, they are also proven to maintain or improve the integrity of all hair types.

ith the ever-changing trends in hair and fashion, Salon Bleu is here to give clients a unique, modern experience. The salon features a color bar, which is the largest in the area, and a team of talented stylists who can help you reach your desired look in a healthy way. SVM spoke with Salon Bleu’s owner, Desiree Brown, about opening up her own salon and the inspiration behind her design.

What’s your most popular hairstyle request? Trending now for the ladies is the cute, short pixie undercut. As for the male clientele, the retro hairstyles of the early 1900s are making a strong revival. What makes you feel most rewarded about being a hairstylist? Interacting with clients, helping them forget about everyday stress. I love seeing them smile and laugh knowing they feel beautiful lets me know I’m doing my job.

Did you always know you wanted to get into the hair business? Yes. As a child I always enjoyed going to the salon with my mom. I would even help her stylist with things while there. From the beginning I’ve been intrigued by hair color and the process it involves. When I was in cosmetology school I knew I would one day own my own salon. Fourteen years, I made it a reality.

Who are your clientele? Our clientele ranges from busy professionals to the stay-at-home mom, and high fashion models. Your color bar is the salon’s landmark and the biggest in the area. What are some of the advantages of having it? Not only is it personalized seeing every step of the color experience, it also has a social aspect connecting people in a way that doesn’t involve a cell phone.

Your days sound pretty full, but I’ll bet they are rewarding in a way that running your own business can be. When did you decide it was time to set up on your own, and how did you know it was the right time? I knew it was the right time when I was asked to become a L’ANZA educator, but staying completely booked and having a family hindered me from traveling, so I felt the next step was to open my own business.

Describe your artist and their specialties. Each of our artists are very unique and individually talented. They offer services anywhere from a weekly blowout to formal makeup and style for any special occasion. For a more individualized approach visit sbleu.com

What do you consider to be the most important quality in business owners, entrepreneurs and business-women? Strength, determination and commitment are my top qualities.

What was the inspiration for your design? I really wanted to bring more of a European flair to Columbus. I love a modern loft style with clean lines and contemporary elements. Basically, I want my clients to feel like they are stepping out of Columbus when they walk through the door. svm

What are some of the services Salon Bleu offers that are different from the rest? With our wide variety of fashion colors and on going education we can create beautiful healthy styles that keep you updated with the cur-

HISTORY

RiverMill Event Centre

Built in 1912, this historic renovated cotton mill stands high above the rocky shore and welcomes guests into an enchanting, old world setting.

Under New Ownership

RiverMill Event Centre continues to be a leader among venues throughout Georgia and Alabama. The RiverMill property was recently purchased by the Hospital Authority of Columbus and will still be occupied by Jamie Keating Culinary, the managing company of The RiverMill Event Centre. A long-term agreement/rent structure has been reached between both parties.

J

By Jessica Brannen amie Keating opened the event centre in 2006 when the building was owned by Brent Buck, who later sold it to Buddy Nelms and Michael McMillan in 2014. Offering a rustic ambience, the RiverMill Event Centre boasts 60,000 square feet of indoor space, as well as three outdoor venue areas. Off-site catering is also available through Jamie Keating Culinary.

Built in 1912, this historic renovated cotton mill stands high above the rocky shores of the Chattahoochee River. Over the years, the cotton mill was expanded and in its heyday employed 3,000 workers. Later, with the onset of the U.S. textile recession, the Bibb Company filed for bankruptcy, and the mill closed its doors in 1998. Renovations began soon after when the mill was purchased by Buck Investment Company, during which time Jamie Keating began leasing the space as Gourmet Events. In 2008, a devastating fire swept through the old Bibb City Mill and part of the event centre facility. Determined to get back to business, Jamie Keating Culinary was born and went full speed ahead with renovations and booking events. In 2012, Keating also opened Epic Restaurant, in the heart of Uptown Columbus, along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The drive and commitment to offer a superior level of quality and service to the Columbus community continues today. Chef and Owner Jamie Keating explains: “My original business plan was and still is based on personal

Ker- Fox Photography attention. From the food to the event design and even the dishwashing, I oversee every detail. Creativity is what we strive for, but only if it’s sensible. “Over the years, RiverMill has been a part of many important events in this area – from weddings and anniversaries to military formals and company parties. And we plan to provide our highest level of service and dedication to the community for many years to come.” To say thank you to the community they serve, RiverMill Event Centre is offering 50 percent off new venue rental for the months of January and February. SVMFEATURE About India

Being born in London with the influence of décor by her father and her mother, being the daughter of to the Earl and Countess of Burma in India, one would think right off she would take to a more fashionable approach. But she admits to being a ‘tomboy’ at her godfather, Prince Charles’ wedding. “As a tomboy it was hard to forgive being asked to wear that frilly dress as a bridesmaid at his wedding to Lady Diana,” she says. Following school Hicks backpacked around the world, interested in the arts and taking a course before moving to Boston to complete a degree in photography with unexpected honors. She didn’t think about being on the other side of the camera until she was featured in a fashion magazine and caught the attention of Ralph Lauren. “A fashion magazine featured me in an issue of ‘New Beauties’, which Ralph Lauren saw and subsequently booked me for my first modeling job.” She talks about living on a small island in the Bahamas with her family, which includes partner David Flint Wood and their five children: Felix, Amory, Conrad, Domino and Wesley, their fostered Bahamian son. Hicks also leads a pretty active life telling us all the activities she likes to indulge in for fun and charity. “I am a passionate horse rider,” she says. “I also scuba dive, bungee jump, parachute and hang glide, snow ski, water ski and wakeboard.” If that’s not enough she adds more to the list including running marathons. “I have climbed into the Grand Canyon, ran three 26.2 mile marathons and have completed four 100 mile bike rides in aid of charity.” She also has three published books under her belt, ‘Island Life’, ‘Island Beauty’, and, most recently, ‘Island Style’. Part of the proceeds from her books have been donated to a small non-profit community school in The Bahamas. After having a successful career in designing collections for bath and beauty products, bedding and jewelry with others, she simply states: “I want now to start my own venture.” That is how India Hicks was founded, by Hicks herself and two other business-minded partners, Konstantin Glasmacher and Nicholas Keuper. “Our vision for the company is to share our exclusive range of well-crafted gifts, fragrances and accessories directly into the heart of the home, defy-

Extraordinarily crafted collections designed by India, representing her life, are offered exclusively through their style ambassadors and E-commerce site. Being brought up in a family that already had an influence in many aspects of design from her father’s interior decorating to her brother, who is an accomplished architect, and her sister-in-law, who is a fashion designer, she needed to find her own voice. She found her niche to design and create something that was unique and to her when she moved. “Moving to The Bahamas allowed me to begin a new life, one entirely of my own, a blank canvas upon which I could paint my own story,” Hicks says. “ Island life made me so much more aware of the natural elements and their manifestations- wind, sun, and

COLUMBUS HERITAGE Every city in the world has a beginning. Those that have survived the tests of time were only able to do so by people that saw promise and endless potential in the city, and the people, itself.

illiam Clark Bradley was born in Russell County, Alabama, and at age 22 he moved to Columbus to work as a clerk for Bussey-Goldsmith, a cotton factoring firm. Throughout the years Mr. Bradley began a remarkable career of financial and commercial success which continues through the present day. William Clark Bradley, known widely throughout the community as W.C. Bradley, was born to Theresa Ann Clark and Forbes Bradley on June 28, 1863. He was the youngest of eight children. Bradley’s father had moved to Columbus, Georgia from Connecticut in the late 1820s, where he had a cotton plantation at Oswichee in Russell County, Alabama. Bradley managed his father’s plantation for about a year and then began work at a warehouse company called Bussey, Goldsmith & Co. at age 19. Most of Bradley’s early business ventures included agricultural. SVM

radley was educated in Columbus and studied briefly at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, Alabama for a year, which is presently Auburn University. In 1887 on April 27th, Bradley married Sarah M. Hall and the two had a daughter together named Elizabeth, who went on to marry Don Abbott Turner. By 1889, Bradley was becoming quite the businessman at a young age, investing in two banks by G. Gunby Jordan, Columbus Savings Bank and Third National Bank. As time went on Bradley also joined Jordan in several textile ventures and invested in Eagle and Phenix Mill when Jordan bought it in 1896 out of receivership. As time went on he became a primary stockholder and recruited other investors for Columbus Manufacturing Company. The company was a crucial component in expanding hydroelectric power and textile production in the city. As for the well-known W.C. Bradley Company, it came about when Bradley and his brother-in-law, S.A. Carter bought out their employers followed by Bradley buying out Carter’s share of the business. The name was then changed to the W.C. Bradley Co. in 1895.

1 2

As his activities increased, he decided to incorporate part of them and the W.C. Bradley Company began in January 1897. Bradley was the president of the firm and remained in that position until his death in 1947. The Columbus Grocery Company was incorporated as part of the W.C. Bradley Company until December 1908 when it was incorporated separately. By 1941 in March, the charter for that company was surrendered and became a department of W.C. Bradley Company, and was named Columbus Grocery and Supply Company.

A fertilizer factory, which used to stand where Spencer High School is now, was a part of the company until it burned down in 1922. W.C. Bradley Co. has been named the hub of cotton transactions in the Chattahoochee Valley, and has been labeled one of Georgia’s major cotton agents. Even though the company has other interests of variety, the firm always remembers its main business representing the cotton grower. By October 1915, Jordan was more open that Bradley should take over presidency of the Eagle and Phenix Mill, and by 1916, Bradley succeeded Jordan. He would also go on to become president five years later of Third National Bank and Columbus Bank Savings, succeeding Jordan as well. Bradley spent much of his spare time on his farms. In 1917, he purchased five plantations near Omaha, Georgia. He was quite the businessman and held many positions of trust and honor. The result of Columbus’ attraction for northern and eastern capital was that of Bradley’s career as a businessman

SVMFEATURE in the South. Another notable venture in business for Bradley, along with Ernest Woodruff, was the organized investment and purchase of the Coca-Cola Company in 1919 for $25 million from Asa Candler in Atlanta, Georgia. Bradley then became the Chairman of the Board and remained active for 27 years in the position. The Columbus Iron Works was also acquired in 1925 by the W.C. Bradley Co., and began manufacturing wood-burning heaters and stoves, as well as horse-drawn implements. Even through the slump of the textile industry in 1927 to the Great Depression, which struck hard in 1929, Bradley maintained focus and loyalty to his businesses. In 1930, he merged Columbus Bank Savings and Third National Bank into what is now Columbus Bank and Trust Company, and today it is the leading bank of Synovus.

1

By the 1930s, he was much in control over several major industries in the Columbus area, including the Eagle and Phenix Mill, Bradley Company and Columbus Iron Works. During the financial hard times, Bradley borrowed money from New York banks so the company could make payroll. His son-in-law, Don Abbott Turner, thought at the time they would be better off if they closed down in order to save money. Bradley was not only loyal to business, but to those who worked for him. This developed into a loyalty that was reciprocated. He would often send the driver at Eagle and Phenix to the bank to get silver dollars so that whenever operatives would come and see him and express their misfortunes, he would help them out by giving them a few dollars to tide them over before payday.

n 1943, Bradley and son-in-law, D.A. Turner, formed the W.C. Bradley and Sarah H. Bradley Foundation. It later became the Bradley-Turner Foundation, and has contributed over $270 million to charitable, educational, religious and cultural programs, and for community improvements. After W.C. Bradley’s passing on July 26, 1947, D.A. Turner became the Chairman of the Board of the W.C. Bradley Co. The company also sold their textile mills the same year.

3

Keeping the family business alive, Bill Turner took over the position his father, D.A. Turner held at W.C. Bradley Co. in 1982 after serving as Vice Chairman and CEO of the company. The W.C. Bradley Co. recently re-purchased the Eagle and Phenix Mills in 2004, which were vacant at the time, as apart of the redeveloping of Uptown Columbus. The mills now feature condos, apartments and various businesses.

4

For the W.C Bradley Co. values don’t change; they remain constant over time. Strategies, on the other hand, have to evolve to match conditions. People and companies are not necessarily defined by strategies, but by their core values. The W.C. Bradley Co. has stood on its values for 127 years. These values were established by W.C. Bradley himself, expressed in the simple, direct motto, “a man’s word is his bond.” svm Special thanks to Historic Columbus and Paula Acton, W.C Bradley Co.

hey’re a sisterly duo currently dominating Hollywood - and yet, Kate and Rooney Mara have yet to appear in the same film together. “My sister had maybe one scene in that film, it certainly wasn’t this big opportunity for us to work together,” Mara, 32, explains for her 30 year-old sibling. “Hopefully it will happen down the line, but it’s not something either of us are intentionally going after. l think it works right now that both of us are doing our very individual thing. It

keeps it fresh.” The spirited redhead, who previously enjoyed supporting parts in Brokeback Mountain and 127 Hours, is now experiencing something of a moment right now. Thanks to her central role as tenacious reporter Zoe Barnes in Netflix’s glossed out vision of House of Cards, Mara has teleported to the A-list, with upcoming parts in Ridley Scott’s The Martian opposite Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, and her biggest job yet, as Susan Storm, or the Invisible Woman, in Fox’s reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. Alongside rising stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Billy Elliott, and actor Jamie Bell, whom Kate is now reportedly dating after four years together with Max Minghella, the foursome are hoping to bring a gritty realism to the comic book adaptation, raising it from the ashes after the previous franchise with Jessica Alba and Chris Evans grossly bombed. And since the trailer landed, fans are now salivating for the film to hit theatres in early August. And so confident in its success, Fox has already greenlit a sequel set to be released in 2017. Now, at an equal peak of her Hollywood powers as her younger sibling, who scooped an Oscar nom for The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, Mara speaks in-depth about their close bond, high school memories and sibling rivalries, while reflecting on the effect House of Cards had on her career and revealing her dream superpower. Aside from Iron Man 2, this is your first sort of, comic book blockbuster. Iron Man 2[laughs] that was literally blink and you’ll miss. So yes, this is the first. How was the experience for you as Susan Storm? I’m always there with the big opening nights of big comic book blockbusters but l never realized how much imagination it would involve. l mean, that’s acting, that’s the spine of acting. But there were a few different moments while making the film where we’re flying, and you know, feeling comfortable, and know what you’re doing, that took a while to figure out, little bit of training for that. It takes a lot of imagination. That’s the best way of creating a force-field or flying, you have to do that as an actor but for this, even more so. Would invisibility be your ultimate superpower? Over flying, or elasticity? l think invisibility is the top for me. You could do anything you wanted; rob a bank; sneak in anywhere; take on criminals. The options are endless. Although flying is pretty cool too. Think FOOTBALL ROYALTY how much you’d save on airfare alone [laughs]. She is the great-granddaughter of the first

owner of the New York What did you know about the franchise before Giants’, Tim Mara, and, landing the part? I’m not a comic book aficioon her mother’s side of the family, the original nado at all, but l knew they were so special. Pittsburgh Steelers owner They’re considered the first family of comics. Art Rooney Sr. And we’re trying to offer a reimagining of that. I was really excited of seeing the 1961 comic would be a 2015 film.

People were pretty nasty about the casting after the announcement; did that affect you at all? I was really surprised how negative people were about it. Even way before the trailer came out, without seeing anything. A lot of negative people out there, but that very quickly changed when the footage was shown. And I know the film will speak for itself for any remaining doubters. It’s going to be gritty and dark, and change the perception of Fantastic Four and the previous movies Did you watch the previous movies? Josh [Trank, director] asked us not to so I followed his direction. For me, it’s because I wanted to make my version of Susan Storm so different from before, mold her into the shape I feel comfortable with. I think all of us, Jamie, Miles and Michael all had that same idea and I’m glad we stuck to it. Did you talk to Jessica at all? No, the opportunity hasn’t presented itself. Is 2015 feeling like your year? The release of Fantastic Four and Ridley Scott’s The Martian after acting since you were fourteen. Maybe I’m just an optimist but I’m always excited about work. I always feel like it’s going to be my year. I don’t mean, this is going to be my year professionally. I’ve been acting for so long, I always feel really lucky. Every time I get a job, I feel yeah...this is it, can’t believe I get to do this as my grown up job because I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. House of Cards was a fantastic launch pad, but were you happy they killed Zoe Barnes I REALLY didn’t have off so soon so you could actor friends, I DIDN’T explore more opportunities? Usually with television, you KNOW a lot of acsign on for an amount of time, sometimes six years which is tors, I GREW UP IN a horrible amount of pressure THE COUNTRY, an when you have no idea what hour outside the city, so the show is going to turn out to be. You feel like you have it’s not like I was surno power or control. That is rounded, you know, by terrifying. But with this House of Cards, all THESE PROFESI sort of always knew from SIONAL ACTORS. the beginning that Zoe was going to be killed. So it was the perfect time for me really. I wasn’t going to get sick of working with Kevin Spacey after that amount of time. I learned so much from him. Did playing journalist Zoe help you understand the mind of a journalist? Make you more sympathetic? I wasn’t unsympathetic before, unless they’re asking douche questions [laughs]. But I haven’t had really bad experiences with journalists. Knock on wood. It’s fun to play one but I would be a terrible journalist. In real life. Is it a benefit or a disadvantage to be sisters in the same industry? There was a long period of time when I was doing it on my own. It was a lot of new experiences. And my mom was really my biggest supporter, and she and I really figured it out together. So by the time my sister came out to LA to live with me, it was so nice because I finally had someone that I could really share these experience with. I really didn’t have actor friends, I didn’t know a lot of actors, I grew up in the country, an hour outside the city, so it’s not like I was surrounded, you know, by all these professional actors. So when Rooney became a professional actor, it was a nice thing and it’s rare to have somebody in your family that has the exact same passion as you. Soviewsmag.com

SVMINTERVIEW Surely you were competitive as siblings? Has this grown between you because you’re both actors? We’ve never been competitive, even as kids. There was natural stuff like, ‘I want that shirt,’ fighting over stupid stuff like that but I was more competitive with my brother. I have an older brother and he’s a year and a half older than me. I skipped a year and was in his grade so I was always trying to get better grades than him. Luckily, with my sister, we were never really competitive with stuff like that. Thank God because in this industry you’re competing with people for jobs and most of the time, you lose. For every meeting you have, typically speaking you only get one, I don’t know what the percentage is but it’s not very high. Have you gone for the same roles though? My sister and I also look very different which is a blessing. I think if we looked really similar, or if we had very similar personalities, it would make things hard, but we’re very individual, so it’s nice for us. If they’re going to go with her, they probably wouldn’t have gone with me, and if they were going to go with me, they probably wouldn’t have gone with her. So it’s not like we’re pinned against each other. Have you ever competed for the same part? I’m sure when she first started out, we went up for a lot of the same jobs. Again, if someone’s going to respond to her, I’m not right for that role and vice versa. To look at you both, there’s very little resemblance. Most people don’t think so.

At the opening of the new Michael Kors boutique in Los Angeles.

And there’s only two years between you. Yes, only two years

Kevin Spacey and Kate Mara arriving at the 2015 Golden Globes.

My sister and I also LOOK VERY DIFFERENT which is a blessing. I think if we looked really similar, or

IF WE HAD VERY SIMILAR PERSONALITIES, it would make things hard, but WE’RE VERY INDIVIDUAL, so it’s nice for us.

What were you like in school? The beautiful Mara girls, enchanting everyone in the hall way? Well, no...that’s very flattering. I wasn’t very social when I was in high school. All I wanted to do was graduate so I could act full-time. I missed lots of school because I was going to movies and things. I was really shy. It’s not like I was miserable, but I was really shy so I wouldn’t consider myself popular, and not as if I wasn’t a loner, or unpopular, I just wasn’t in the spotlight.

With her sister actress Rooney Mara at the Netflix New York Premiere of “House of Cards”.

What was Rooney then? I would say she had her group of friends, I wouldn’t consider her shy at the time. We weren’t the stars of high school. You weren’t cheerleaders, were you? No, not at all.

Kelly Osbourne and Kate Mara sit front row at the Badgley Mischka show in NYC.

I wonder was there a time when you were younger where the rejection and auditions was getting too much for you. Developmental years are hard enough without that extra layer. Even though rejection, and I’m probably a more sensitive person then than I am now, but it’s not like I took it lightly. But I never ever questioned it for a second. Acting for me, especially as I was so shy, was an escape. I was more interested in escaping the social awkwardness of being a teenager and acting was my way of escaping it. I would much rather deal with the rejection of acting than the rejection of teenage stuff. svm SVM

ow did you realize you had an aptitude for art, and what motivated you to take this route? What did you imagine yourself doing before you discovered art? Ever since I can remember, I have been drawn to art. All of the amazing teachers that I had growing up, in and out of school, encouraged me to pursue art. I really didn’t imagine myself doing anything but art. You are originally from Columbus, Georgia. What made you decide to make the move to Charleston, South Carolina? I made the move because Charleston has a great art community with lots of galleries and opportunities. Also, it was a plus that some of my close friends from Columbus lived in Charleston, and my boyfriend at the time (now husband) moved there as well. Being young and having your own gallery to now opening up a new studio, what has been your motive for change? It has been a great experience owning an art gallery on Historic Broad Street here in Charleston, and learning the business side of the art world. After a couple of years of owning The Gallery on Broad, I realized that I wanted to be painting everyday rather than running a business. It was hard keeping up with both. I am currently working on my biggest project so far, but I am not allowed to share details yet. You have quite a few abstract, floral, barn, and even cow paintings in your collection. Do you have a certain inspiration or story that draws you to these subjects? A lot of my inspiration comes from our family farm in Smiths Station, AL., and just everyday life. If you were to name one artist who inspires you creatively, personally, professionally and beyond, who would that be? It is hard for me to name one artist. I am truly inspired and appreciate different aspects of many different artists and art forms. From Joaquin Sorolla to Bo Bartlett to Brian Rutenberg. I’m all over the place!. svm SVM

A classic and popular staple in the world of gin is none other than, Tanqueray Gin, with nearly two million 9-liter cases sold a year. The gin is thought to have been Frank Sinatra’s favorite.

I

By Stephanie Reeves

t is known for it’s dry and crisp flavor, distilled twice by adding four botanicals including: juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, and liquorice root that bring this gin to life. It is smooth and well balanced with the lack of citrus, making Tanqueray drier. This provides for a refreshing, tasting gin and tonic and the driest of martini cocktails.

The bottle is just as appealing as the taste. It invites drinkers into the history and class of Tanqueray, with the signature red waxed seal on the bottle. It is the official stamp of quality, along with a pineapple featured on the seal, as a traditional symbol of hospitality, quality and discernment. There is 47.3% ABV in the Special Dry Tanqueray in the United States and Canada. Tanqueray is the leading imported gin, and is one of the most awarded gins. The gin originated in England in 1830 by Charles Tanqueray. Now, Tanqueray is produced in Scotland. During WWII, only one of the stills survived, Old Tom Still. That still was moved to Scotland. Popular drinks including the tasteful gin include favorites such as the classic gin and tonic, Bramble, Tom Collins, Gin Rickey, and a variety of the finest, dry martinis. Tanqueray is the perfect gin to mix up a refreshing-tasting cocktail or can simply be served on the rocks. Tanqueray Gin is a product of Diageo, and it is distributed in Georgia by Georgia Crown Distributing Co. svm

piper on the go There is a new App in town. Wesley Ker-Fox of Columbus, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Piper, is bringing an app to Columbus that uses cutting edge iBeacon technology to connect people to businesses and a variety of places. By Roberto Caligaris

BY THE NUMBERS In total, there are about 1,250 Piper beacons in Columbus, with businesses typically paying a monthly subscription fee for the service. Piper estimates that between 30,000 and 40,000 people in the city have downloaded the app. The metro area population is around 300,000.

ou may have seen a blue sign or two around town featuring a dog and the word ‘Piper’ in business windows. SVM got the chance to speak to Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Piper, Wesley Ker-Fox, about the new app that chose Columbus, Georgia as its test market and also what it can do to benefit you or even your business.

What does Piper do, and how does it benefit the businesses that use it? Piper is a proximity-based Bluetooth messaging system that uses iBeacon technology to send messages to users’ phones that have the iOS or Android app installed. In other words, if you have the free Piper app on your phone and you get near one of our devices, you’ll receive a message on your phone which can be a simple text notification, photo, video, link to website or social media, and even an Apple Pass. The obvious use case for iBeacons is in the retail industry. Businesses can virtually tap a consumer on the shoulder as they walk by their store and present them with a promotional message or exclusive offer. That’s the benefit of using Piper; users only get messages at the most relevant time and when they’re most likely to engage – when they’re right outside your door or in front of your display. However, there are many uses for Piper other than just retail. Piper is being used by real estate agents to showcase their properties, universities for self guided orientation tours, museums and tourism locations highlighting points of interest, auto dealerships give exclusive offers for specific vehicles and services, golf courses have course tips, lifeguards share rip current warnings, and many more examples. We’re also in testing phases with some large national brands that want to use us for inventory control and new ways to improve customer service. As for consumers, what are the benefits of having the app on their phones? Piper lets you discover things, places and people nearby. By 2019, it’s estimated that there will be 60 million iBeacon devices as part of the IoT (Internet of Things). They’ll be in your TV’s and refrigerators, in stores and restaurants – everywhere. You’re going to need an app that can sort through all the noise and reveal the exclusive offers and special content that you’re interested in. That’s what we’re trying to become: the Browser of

Beacons. At the same time, we want you to have control of your experience. If you want to just keep your phone in your pocket, Piper’s History view tracks all the beacons you come into contact with so at a more convenient time, you can relive what you missed. And if you don’t want to receive certain messages you can simply block them. Why did Piper choose to focus so heavily on Columbus, Georgia? We wanted to create a test market in a city outside of our base in San Diego so we looked at several cities with populations between 200,000 and 500,000. We chose Columbus because it’s really a microcosm. It has major enterprises, a very active SMB community and a thriving cultural atmosphere. Uptown Columbus for example, provides a perfect test ground for us with events, restaurants, tourism, hospitality, and retail all mixed in with loads of millennials thanks to Columbus State. Has the app had success so far on business in the Columbus area? We’ve been extremely happy with the Columbus roll out. We got international attention starting with the McDonald’s launch and more press recently when Columbus, GA became the World’s First iBeacon City. There are over 70 businesses and organizations in town using Piper and more than 1250 beacons are deployed. Piper has multiple benefits and safety is one of them, can you tell us more about that? Piper Safe Cities is a firstof-its-kind public safety initiative supported by the city to help make trails and high traffic areas both more engaging and safer for the citizens. Beacons are deployed along the RiverWalk and other areas that deliver messages about points of interest, fitness and health tips and even promotion of some of the city’s attractions. There is also the option to call 911 or text the police with your accurate location data should you be in an emergency or want to report suspicious behavior. What are some other key features to Piper? Piper is the only company that let’s you create private groups using beacons. McDonald’s uses this to communicate with their employees. Similarly, users who place a beacon in their home are able to communicate privately with family members, leave notes for dog walkers and remind kids to do their homework. We’re also the only beacon network that doesn’t require a developer or an existing app for a business to get started. You can literally create and push a message out in under 30 seconds using just your phone.svm

hrough a job transfer, Hugh and Beth Tappan of Columbus found themselves moving from Wichita, Kansas to South Carolina, settling into a newly built home with modern style. The homeowners bought the home directly from the builder, Antonio Ribeiro at Master Builder, LLC, who was building the house as his dream home. The 6,250 square-foot home is situated on the golf course on Daniel Island at the end of a quiet cul-desac. Daniel Island is a 4,000-acre island located in the city of Charleston, South Carolina. Named after its former inhabitant, the colonial governor of the Carolinas, Robert Daniell the island is located in Berkeley County and situated between the Cooper and Wando Rivers . As of July 2012 it is currently being developed as a master-planned community complete with residential neighborhoods, parks, trails, recreational amenities and a downtown that is home to shops, restaurants, schools,

Inside the home, it features an open floor plan that was developed from what the builder saw in a showcase in Las Vegas and the work of a Charleston architect, Matt Willks at MW Designs. The home features 5 bedrooms in the main house, with 4 bathrooms and one powder room. There is a guest suite, which sits above the garage, and it houses one big room along with a bathroom. The Tappans were able to put their own personal touches to the home by selecting such things as the paint colors and lighting. Arden Huff Cheney of Columbus served as the interior decorator to make this home a charming retreat with the added touches from the family. The house also features a courtyard pool, which can be accessed and seen from the different rooms through glass doors, offers serenity surrounding the home. svm

The family room is painted in a warm, neutral color from Benjamin Moore. All the upholstery is custom made by Arden Huff Cheney. The tan and blue sofas are covered with Kravet fabric. The homeowners lounge chairs were recovered using red zebra print fabric. The paisley print chair is from G & J Styles, and is covered in a Durelee fabric. Tribal pillows on the sofa were custom made from Carlton V. The painting above the sofa is by Peter Lik from the owner’s collection. A beautiful semi-antique rug, purchased from Persian Point in Atlanta, covers the floor and pulls all the colors in the room together. The draperies were handmade in Charleston by Southern Shades Interior Fabricator.

The modern kitchen connects to the family room. The Tappan’s wanted a space where everyone could hangout, talk, cook, and be part of the whole experience. The kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances, the marble on the island is from Universal Granite and Marble, and the lighting is from Carolina Lanterns/Low Country Lighting.

major shift is happening in our general consciousness about where and how we choose to live and accessibility seems to play a major role. The once idyllic notion of suburbia as a quiet green space with cheap square footage has been replaced by cookie cutter developments, grueling commutes, and box stores. In an arm wrestle between suburbia and urban living, it seems access to a city’s culture, sustainability, and lifestyle is the strong arm. A couple of years ago, Cham and Kristi Watkins decided to downsize, trading in their large home in Piedmont in Pine Mountain, to a loft at Eagle and Phenix Mills. Taking the furniture from their former home, it brought contrast to the open and modern, industrial style of the condo. Beautifully restored off the banks of the Chattahoochee River, Eagle and Phenix Mills Lofts are now home to some of Columbus’ sophisticated and charming residences.

or thirty-one years every November in Pine Mountain, the Steeplechase has been one of the biggest fundraisers in the Columbus and Valley area. SVM got the chance to speak with Marie Arnold, this year’s race director and art work designer, on the excitement, the fun and the responsibilities that come along with Steeplechase.

As 2015 Steeplechase Director, what are some of your responsibilities at this year’s race? My biggest responsibility was putting together a team of volunteers who take care of everything for the race that is not equestrian. It takes hundreds of volunteers to pull off this event from infield entertainment, to ad and raffle sales, decorating the guarantor tent, finding volunteers for race day, promoting the event in the southeast and at colleges, garnering new sponsors, and the list goes on (and on and on!). Why did you feel this was something you wanted to take on? I have been very good friends with Kim Jinks for over 20 years. I have learned a great deal from her about the contributions that the Steeplechase provides to our community. I felt like it was an event that I could bring my passion for the arts to contribute to the success of the event.

The Crown Royal Sport of Kings Maiden Hurdle Stakes sponsored by Georgia Crown is one of the main races of the day.

How did you first become involved with Steeplechase? I attended the Steeplechase as a spectator for many years before Kim asked me to get involved as the chairperson for the student art contest in 2006. Since that time I have served on various committees and volunteer positions. What are some of your favorite things about Steeplechase and what you are most looking forward to? My favorite things would be the overall atmosphere of the event. The beautiful views of Pine Mountain, the outfits of the patrons, the children enjoying all of the activities in the infield, the aroma of all the different foods, and last but not least the beautiful horses and the colorfully outfitted jockeys on the track. What are some of the main races scheduled this year and what are the purses? Our total purse money this year is $160,000. Our two largest races are The Crown Royal (Sport of Kings Maiden Hurdle) and The AFLAC Supreme Hurdle. We have had so much interest from our local youth wanting to race that we have added a small pony race. That will make three junior races and five races sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association. And I will let you in on something really fun... We created a syndicate here in Columbus called Hardscrabble Partnership and purchased two horses. They raced in the spring circuit, summered in Midland at the Lampton’s farm and are back in Camden training for the fall circuit. Keep an eye out for Grant who we hope will be racing at Callaway.

Steeplechase poster designed by Marie Arnold.

Aside from being this year’s director, you also designed the artwork for Steeplechase this year. What is your background in art? I started taking private art lessons at an early age. I have a BFA in Graphic Design from UGA. I also studied photography at the University. I furthered my education in art in Pforsheim, Germany for a year. After graduation, I designed graphics for sports equipment endorsed by Bo Jackson and Bart Starr in Auburn, Alabama. I have also painted for many company catalogs and have been commissioned to paint more watercolors of animals and children than I can count.

The Hat Contest sponsored by SVM is always an attraction. Joe, Marie and Ella Arnold.

How important is Steeplechase to you, and the benefit it has for the community? As an artist I want our community’s arts of all forms to thrive. It has been beneficial to my children to learn the valuable lesson of service to everyone affected by the support of the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens. The beneficiaries of our efforts include The Columbus Museum, The Historic Columbus Foundation, The Springer Opera House, The RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Callaway Gardens. Thanks to the companies and individuals that purchased tickets and/or sponsor the Steeplechase so we are able to experience the traditions and deep heritage that has helped Columbus become the great community that it is today. svm

I attended the Steeplechase as a spectator for many years before KIM JINKS ASKED ME TO GET INVOLVED AS THE CHAIRPERSON FOR THE STUDENT ART CONTEST IN 2006.

Since that time I have served on various committees and volunteer positions. SVM

He is bred and owned by Ahmed Zyat of Zayat Stables, LLC, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden in most of his races by Victor Espinoza. The bay colt with the unusually short tail easily defeated seven rivals in the grueling 1 1/2-mile race, covering the distance in 2:26.65 to end the longest stretch without a Triple Crown champion in history. Jockey Espinoza was in awe of the achievement: “Wow! Wow! I can just tell you it’s an amazing thing.” Espinoza had just crossed the finish line and achieved an amazing feat with his record third shot after failing to win in 2002 and last year on California Chrome. Trainer Baffert, who at 62 is the second-oldest trainer of a Triple Crown winner, ended his own frustrating history in the races. Baffert finally won on his record fourth Triple try, having lost in 1997, 1998 (by a nose) and in 2002. “I still can’t believe it happened. That little horse, he deserved it, He’s the one that did it. We were basically just passengers.”

then skipped the Preakness to await the Belmont, a competitive advantage to horses that didn’t endure the three-race grind. Tale of Verve finished second in the Preakness to American Pharoah, who had beaten Madefromlucky in the Rebel Stakes in March. Unlike Affirmed, who dueled Alydar in all three races, American Pharoah didn’t have a specific rival since he was the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races. Going into the Belmont, American Pharoah had beaten all of his seven challengers before. At the Belmont race, Materiality was closest early after a half-mile in: 48.83, with Keen Ice surprisingly close down the backstretch. On the final turn, Mubtaahij and Frosted, along the rail, tried to make the race competitive, but Victor Espinoza, who gave American Pharoah a perfect ride, had plenty of horse for the grueling final quarter-mile. With American Pharoah widening in the final margin, he crossed the wire to the thunderous roar of the Belmont throng witnessing the first Triple Crown winner in decades. “We knew and were hoping we had the horse,” said trainer Bob Baffert. “Once Victor (Espinoza) got him in that beautiful mode, the way he went over the ground, I was very happy. I was looking for someone to come, because I’ve been here before, but at the 1/8th pole, I knew he had it, and I just took in the crowd, the announcer, everything.”

HORSE LIKE NO OTHER

Since 1978, the rigors of the Triple Crown had done in 13 other horses who won the Derby and the Preakness. Twelve lost their third leg and scratched with a leg injury in 2012. Their failures left the sport and its fans craving a worthy successor to the 11 previous champions. American Pharoah turned out to be that horse. He was 2-year-old champion last year, and virtually cinched similar honors for his achievements as a 3-year-old this year. Five of his rivals lost to him in the Derby,

Zayat said after the race he intends on running American Pharoah for the rest of the 2015 season: “I personally made a promise to my family and to the fans more than anybody else,” Zayat said. “We need to enjoy our stars and race them as long as we possibly (can).” In August 29, American Pharoah’s had a second-place finish for the first time in his career at the 146th Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. svm Special thanks to Zayat Racing Stables.

or as many years as I can remember we have been producing wine and beer dinners for our most valued guests! A couple of months ago we decided to mix up that tradition and have a Blended Scotch Whiskey dinner showcasing Johnnie Walker flights. One of my favorite pieces to the evening was having their “Master Distiller” at the dinner to help me best explain what one should look for when it comes to characteristics, flavor profiles, temperature varieties and how that effects the taste and the proper vessel to sip out of. Personally I am not much of a spirit drinker but, what was intriguing to me most was the difference in taste based on the temperature served. I knew that this was true with fine wines and Sake but, Spirits? Here are some examples taken from the Master himself: Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve: wellchilled, has a texture like honey Johnnie Walker Double Black: gently warmed in a hot water bath has an earthy, warmth reminiscent of a warm bread pudding Johnnie Walker Red: is perfect alone or in your favorite mixed drink. Johnnie Walker Blue: Serve NEAT with a glass of chilled water, taking alternate sips to maximize it’s complexity

FOOD PAIRING CHEESE

Pair smoky with Roquefort. With sweeter Scotches try a softer cheese such as brie. For a variety go with sharp cheddar, Swiss, Havarti, and Gouda.

CHOCOLATE

Whiskey is a great complement to chocolate, especially dark chocolate. The more cacao, the better or take it to the next level with nuts and chocolate!

Fruit

Something tangy or tart, like apples or pears, goes well with whisky. Try to stay away from fruits that contain too much citrus, like oranges - this will mask too much of the whiskey’s flavor.

Most of the aficionados that patronize my restaurant and event facility do enjoy JW over whiskey stones, aka Soap Stones. The stones are stored in our freezer then we add two to three per glass, based on our guest’s preference, this allows the spirit to chill without the dilution of water. svm

You can refrigerate them in the poaching liquid until you’re ready to fill them. Remove stems from pears and set stems aside. Core pears with an apple corer, leaving pear whole.

Liquor Suggestion

Johnnie Walker Red Label Johnnie Walker Red Label was launched in its current form by brothers George and Alexander Walker in 1909, though it had existed as Walker’s Special Old Highland Red Label for some years previously. Alexander blended a type of whisky which is more suited to mixing with soda than the heavier, more old-fashioned whiskies, and named it after his grandfather, who had started the family business in 1820. Today it is the world’s most popular whisky and is sold in more than 200 markets world-wide. Johnnie Walker Scottish Whisky is a great way to celebrate any occasion or holiday. With many different blends, this whisky is sure to please a variety of palettes. Each bottle has a key feature, and that is the Striding Man logo. Created by illustrator Tom Browne, the likeness was to resemble John “Johnnie” Walker in upscale attire. Diageo, the product’s manufacturer, has created a members club for those who drink Johnnie Walker, called “The Striding Man Society.

Cartier renamed the place Mount Royal, which is where the name Montreal is derived from, after the mountain that he found there behind the St. Lawrence River.

Throughout Montreal’s history, the French culture prevailed, but not without tensions between the French and British. The people of Quebec, surrounded by the English in North America and made to feel second class in the heart of their own province, feared for the survival of their French culture and language. Separation of Montreal between the British and the French, while often discussed, became less of a burning issue as time went on, and enormous change without the use of violence was accomplished. Today, Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world and is the heart of the Province of Quebec.

WHAT TO SEE NOTRE DAME BASILICA The Notre Dame Basilica is Montreal’s oldest Catholic Church and most famous landmark. It is a visually pleasing symphony of intricately designed interior, which includes gilded sculptures, beautifully carved wood and stained glass chronicling the history of the city. Built in 1879, it also sports a Casavant organ and the Gros Bourdon, said to be the biggest bell in North America.

Montreal is well known for its laissez-faire attitude, its old limestone buildings and above all, its infatuation with food – MONTREAL IS THE PERFECT LONG WEEKEND GETAWAY for those living under the stars and stripes.

MOUNT ROYAL Mount Royal is a mountain in the middle of a cosmopolitan metropolis. Referred to simply as “the mountain” by locals; this 764-foot mountain provides a breathtaking view of Montreal and is a popular recreation spot. Visitors can do anything from enjoying fabulous picnics to cross-country skiing without ever having to leave the city. OLD MONTREAL Old Montreal is an absolute must see for a taste of the Old World. Stroll, bicycle or take a horsedrawn carriage through the narrow cobblestone streets of Montreal’s famous Parisian-style historic district, filled with cultural landmarks, museums, sidewalk cafes and great restaurants. From here you can visit magnificent NotreDame Basilica, stop for a bite to eat at Place Jacques-Cartier, and then head to the Pointe-àCallière, a Museum of Archaeology and History

Located just minutes from downtown Montreal, the Montreal Botanical Garden is a living museum of plants from all over the world. Highlights include works by JeanBaptiste Roy-Audy and Paul Kane, landscapes by the Group of Seven and abstractions by JeanPaul Riopelle.

WHAT TO EAT POUTINE Poutine is a classic Canadian dish and arguably Quebec’s highest gastronomic achievement. In recent years it’s experienced a renaissance,

spreading across Canada and beyond. Gourmet versions have appeared in trendy gastro-diners and even the New York Times has jumped on board, celebrating poutine’s arrival in Manhattan. A savory assortment of french-fried potatoes, beef gravy, and cheese curds, poutine is the ultimate late-night snack. Montreal hosts a competitive “La Poutine Week” every year in February. MONTREAL BAGEL Montreal is famous for their bagels. In contrast to its New York cousin, Montreal bagels are smaller, thinner, sweeter and denser with a larger hole and always baked in a wood-fired oven. In many Montreal establishments, bagels are still produced by hand and baked in full view of the diners. There are two predominant varieties: poppy seed and sesame seed. TIRE SUR LA NIEGE Tire sur la Niege or maple taffy, is one of Quebec’s most distinctive offerings. The taffy is formed by pouring still hot, boiled maple sap directly onto fresh snow. The result is a soft, flexible candy that begs to be eaten immediately. The soft candy is traditionally served with yeast-risen donuts, sour dill pickles, and coffee. The pickles and coffee serve to counter the intense sweetness of the candy. svm

Parallel LIVES THE LIGHTER SIDE

We all share common threads in life. Whether it be in enjoying similar TV shows, foods, stores, or the same types of people, all of humanity is connected in one way or another. In essence, we all live through parallel lives - living, breathing and existing through subtle, but ever existent, common pulses.

Sotheby’s

VS

Sotheby’s Holdings, Inc., is the holding company for Sotheby’s, one of the world’s premier auction houses. Sotheby’s got its start in the mid-18th century, focusing on the British book market, and later in the century into other markets.

Sotheby’s New York held its most lucrative ever sale in 2014 with a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti for $101 million.

In 1980, Peter Wilson, Sotheby’s longtime leader, stepped down from his post and was followed by a number of other executives in quick succession. Alfred Taubman, an American businessman purchased all of Sotheby’s on November 9, 1983 Alfred Taubman was sentenced in 2002 to a year and a day in prison and fined $7.5 million for leading a six-year price-fixing scheme with its rival Christie’s.

Diana D. Brooks, the former CEO of Sotheby’s and the first woman to head a leading auction house, was ordered to serve six months of home detention, perform 1,000 hours of community service and pay a fine of $350,000 for the price-fixing scheme. Soviewsmag.com

HISTORY NOTORIOUS BUSINESS

James Christie excelled at auctioneering. In the early years, he sold many things aside from works of art, including chamber pots, loads of hay, and even someone’s suddenly unneeded coffin. In 1967, Christie’s did succeed in establishing a business relationship with the Soviet Union, selling for £65,751 ($193,308) a 1,700-piece porcelain banquet service made for Tsar Nicholas I in 1830.

PERKS FAME

Sotheby’s (and Christie’s) are known to ship works to collectors’ houses before the sale to let them “live with the art” for an hour or two. .

Founded in 1766 by James Christie, Christie’s has since conducted the greatest and most celebrated auctions through the centuries providing a popular showcase for the unique and the beautiful.

At Christie’s, premium clients from China were flown to New York and wined and dined for days.

In 2014, Christie’s scored a coup with the sale of a Francis Bacon triptych painting for $142.4 million, the largest sum ever realized for an individual work at auction.

In May 1998, French tycoon Francois Pinault bought Christie’s for $1.2 billion. After buying such interests as Chateau Latour wines, Vail Resorts in Colorado, and Gucci, Pinault was known to analyze a new purchase during the first year, then change management.

OWNERS

In 1937, Sotheby’s conducted its most notable house sale of the Pre-war era, when it dispersed the contents of 148 Piccadilly, formerly owned by the Rothschild family. The BBC broadcasted the auction live, and £125,000 was netted from the sale, an enormous sum for the time.

GUILTY

In 1878, Thomas Hodge, the son of Edward Grose Hodge, joined the firm. He was notorious for his attachment to old ways; for example, he loathed the telephone and insisted that all of his letters be handwritten, not typed.

Christie’s International plc oversees the operations of one of the world’s premier art auction houses. Although the company holds regular auctions worldwide, its principal selling centers are located in London and New York City.

Sir Anthony Tennant - Taubman’s onetime counterpartwho was chairman of Christie’s from 1993 to 1996 .Sir Anthony has denied his involvement and has refused to come to the United States from England. Under English law, he could not be extradited to stand trial.

CHARGED

The history of Sotheby’s may be traced to 1744, when the English bookseller Samuel Baker held his first auction. During this time, book collectors had become increasingly interested in enhancing their holdings by purchasing works from the libraries of collectors who had died.
