BRIDAL BELLS T

he plot of the movie The Hangover might be every bride's worst nightmare: Just two days before his wedding, the groom, Doug, takes three of his friends to Las Vegas for a crazy bachelor party. The next morning the three friends wake up and find that Doug is missing and they have little time to find him before making it back in time for the wedding. The movie is hilarious, but maybe not for the bride who is faint-of-heart. However, on a more serious note, the sense of fulfillment that comes from marriage cannot be challenged. Marriage tends to change people’s goals about life, especially making these goals more gratifying because there is someone to share them with and the accomplishments that result thereof.

In this Issue we wanted to capture all that the season and, of course, everything our region’s best vendors have to offer for your spring or summer wedding. The April issue features some of our most well-known vendors in the industry, from professional Event Planners like Rachel Plummer and Virginia Bonner, Cake Designer Cheryl Heider, Floral Designer Kimberly Nelson, and Wildwood Day Spa that specializes in Wedding Beauty Programs. And let’s not forget the fashion. To help get your dressshopping juices flowing, we took the best silhouettes from today’s designer collections and shot them at historic Riverside on Fort Benning, the home of Major General Robert Brown.

Can't decide where to go on your honeymoon? Lyndsey Epperly is giving you clues on how to enjoy and maximize your dollars if you decide to visit St. Lucia, a tropical favorite for couples.

And lastly, Monte Durham, the fashion director for the new TLC show Say Yes to the DressAtlanta, spoke to Kristen Brown about finding the perfect gown for the wedding of your dreams. Enjoy!

Editor-in-Chief

onthecover You just got married, where was your honeymoon destination? Our honeymoon was at the Grand Resort at Sandals in St. Lucia. Were you surprised when your now husband popped the question? Yes! Oh my goodness I had no idea it was coming! It was probably the first time I had ever truly been surprised, when I honestly had no idea it was coming! Sweetest moment ever! What makeup items can’t you leave the house without? Definitely mascara and bronzer.. and my chapstick! What’s your latest fashion obsession? I am obsessed with the vintage look that seems to be popping up everywhere. It looks so relaxed and edgy, I love it! How can you describe yourself in a sentence? I enjoy the little moments in life, having a good time, spending time with God, and being around the people I love!

Massey Brittany Benton

What is your biggest pet peeve? When people bite their nails. Cant stand it! (laugh!) What would be your dream profession and why? Well, Im living it actually! I’m a freelance hair and make

up artist and I couldn’t have been blessed with a better profession! I absolutely love what I do. What was your first tattoo and where is it? What does it stand for? My first tattoo is a star on my left wrist, and I got it because growing up I had always been obsessed with stars. I went back and got the word “faith” written beside it, because without a huge amount of faith in God, I don’t think I would be where I am today! It’s the single most important thing about who I am. What’s your favorite kind of music? That’s a tough one because I literally like all types of music. Everything from country to Christian to artist like Adel and Michael Buble! Do you like to sing karaoke? Secretly! Haha, my nerves tend to get the best of me when it comes to getting in front of a crowd! Are you a good dancer? I would like to think so! I love to dance around anytime a good song comes on, or even if there’s just a good song stuck in my head! How was your experience with Southern Views? Incredible! The people have been absolutely amazing to work with, and the city of Columbus is just adorable! I’ve had a wonderful time being a part of such a great magazine! soviewsmag.com

Major Power

Thank you for a thoughtful, down-to-earth interview with Debora Norville (Deborah Norville, February 2011). As a Southern woman I became a fan of hers reading her books and watching her on TV. It's really interesting how she can handle so many things at the same time, like being a journalist, wife, mother and writer. I would be crazy if I had a life like hers, but like she said it's all about organization. There’s no reason you can't be smart, successful and a devoted crochet fan!

I’m very proud of having Teresa Tomlinson as the new Columbus mayor. Most of the time women aren't often asked to run for office, and, when they are elected, the insistently masculine political culture chases many of them off. Women's low rate of participation in business leadership roles (just 3 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are women) also affects political participation, since the two often intersect. Mrs. Tomlinson will do a great job.

The interview with Deborah Norville (Deborah Norville, February 20111) was interesting to say the least. I’ve never been a big fan of hers, but this conversation changed all of that. I read her books and she tackles a huge issue in our society that she believes is disappearing from our brand as people - respect. She uses humor, facts, and great stories to help us understand how respect is one of the most valuable character qualities that we can exhibit as people. Great article!

M. HALL, COLUMBUS, GEORGIA I was glad to see the pictures of Mrs. Tomlinson sworn in as a mayor (February 2011). It’s about time we have a woman running our city, even if doesn’t matter to many people. Teresa Tomlinson was elected not because she is a woman, but because she is capable. There’s no shortage of talented women who could run for elected office in this city. Not all of these women work in politics or work on politics, but I think that is maybe something that really recommends them. You don’t have to have been in City Hall for the past 20 years to have made a difference in our city. Good luck to our new mayor!

Orient Express Thank you for featuring the story on Kristin Tidwell in the February/March issue. It was wonderful to read about a young woman who is not afraid to take risks and travel to a foreign country to pursue a higher education. I was especially intrigued by her research and volunteer work in a Cambodia orphanage. Way to make Columbus proud.

Say Yes To MONTE Interview by Kristen Brown

The popular wedding reality show Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta debuted in the summer of 2010 at Bridals by Lori and an outspoken star was born. 31 soviewsmag.com

T

he quest for the perfect gown can sometimes be a daunting task and many brides seek the help of professionals for their expert opinion and advice. Monte Durham, Fashion Director at Bridals by Lori and star of Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta on TLC, is the fashion guru on this topic. With his quick wit and southern charm, brides are sure to fall in love with the dress of their dreams… and Monte too! Monte graciously sat down with SVM to discuss his southern roots, staying true to yourself and the three F’s to finding the perfect wedding dress.

The dresses featured at Bridals by Lori are top-of-the-line, can a bride still be stylish on a budget? Totally! I think the thing that you have to remember is to be true to yourself. That truly means if you only have $2,000 to spend on your gown, let’s make it the best $2,000 you can spend. I’m always telling brides, do not pay for things that aren’t important to you. Don’t pay for Italian silk if you don’t know what Italian silk is. Pay for what you know and get a look based on the three F’s; fabric, fit and fashion. If you can get those three things in there, you’re going to look great.

How did you get started in the wedding business? I was the artistic director for Elizabeth Arden Salon and Spas and beside our salon was a bridal shop, Priscilla of Boston. One day the manager came running over in a panic because they were having a bridal fair and their hair stylist didn’t show up. Even as the director, I couldn’t convince any of my employees to go help because nobody wanted to deal with the brides. So I stepped away from the salon and went over and did trial runs with the brides and talked about make-up and fashion at Priscilla of Boston’s bridal show. Girls started booking me that day to do hair and make-up for their weddings.

down that path it is going to be great. I have a wicked sense of humor that is all in fun and play. So the Full Monte includes my personality, meaning humor, but it also includes my knowledge of fit and fabric and fashion. I know hair, make-up, what shoes to wear, nail color, the shape and length of your nails and your eye brown art. I know what is going to make you look that best you can on your wedding day and still make you look natural, that’s the Full Monte.

Jack ‘em up is a phrase Lori and I came up with when a bride is narrowing in on her choices.

During the show you also you the phrase “jack ‘em up” quite a bit, can you explain what this refers to? Jack ‘em up is a phrase Lori and I came up with when a bride is narrowing in on her choices. What we do with that is simply jack ‘em up.

Lori and I were running around being our normal selves, this is unscripted and what you see is what you get. At the end of filming we collapsed on a bench and looked at each other and said wow, this is really happening. And in the back of my mind that still sticks and I hope I always own that because it was such a point for us to realize that this was truly a reality.

Haley Lyman from Columbus on Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.

Can you please explain the term we hear on the show “The Full Monte”? The Full Monte just means that you are going to get the true me, a very strong whiff of my personality and my sense of humor, and while it can be a little jarring and takes a while to get used to, if we can go

What’s the best part about being Monte Durham? I think knowing from once I come and staying true to that. I come from West Virginia, and that’s not bad or good it’s just a fact. I was raised by a loving and caring family and my grandparents have provided incredible support. The best part about being Monte is having that support and my faith and beliefs of my family and religion. Finishing Touches Interview by Kristen Brown

Kimberly Nelson’s passion for flowers and creative color combinations results in weddings that stand out from the rest.

hen it comes to creating exquisite floral arrangements for weddings, corporate events and holiday home decorations, floral designer Kimberly Nelson believes it’s all in the details. Fresh off her trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show, Kimberly sat down with SVM to talk about her start in the industry, the latest trends and her desire to promote floral education and design.

W

How did you get into flower arranging? I was fortunate my high school offered a vocation class for floral design and my teacher, Mary Whitehead, awarded me most outstanding student which encouraged me and showed me I had a natural gift. How long have you been working in the wedding business? I have been a successful business owner for the past 9 years, specializing in weddings, parties and events. I just love it and I am often told my passion shows in my work. What services does Kimberly Nelson Floral Designs provide on a wedding day? Our services for a wedding include all bridal party flowers, ceremony and reception décor. We have many items the brides can rent from us such as tall vases, unique stands, candle holders in several finishes like brass, silver, and wrought iron. Our inventory is consistently updated. How far ahead of time should a bride book a florist for her wedding? I personally recommend six months to one year. You want the best selection of vendors for your dream wedding and some dates book earlier than others so planning ahead is ideal. Any tips or ideas for brides on a budget? First, let me say all brides have a budget to keep in mind. The more flexible the bride is the better I can stay within her specific budget.

What are some of the hottest trends in wedding flowers right now? I am seeing a lot of brides using products from etsy.com. The items are personalized and some are vintage, which I love. I’m also seeing bridal bouquets made with brooches and centerpieces using vintage bottles displayed on the tables with single flowers in them. The biggest factor that drives trends for weddings is color. This year Pantone announced the trend would be a shade of pink called “Honeysuckle”. Pink has been a favorite of brides for years so I would not say that will be a new trend.

This year Pantone announced the trend would be a shade of pink called “Honeysuckle” What is one of your favorite creations you’ve ever made? I am not sure I can say I have a single favorite creation. However, my favorite detail of a wedding is creating the bride’s bouquet. She carries it down the aisle with pride and it is gives me joy. Seeing photos of a happy bride on her wedding day is most rewarding. svm For more information, visit www.kimnelsonfloraldesign.com or call 706.332.7761.

PERFECT SETTINGS ALL GREAT EVENTS START WITH THE BEST FLORAL DESIGN AND SUPERB DECOR. • BY KRISTEN BROWN

Rachel Plummer

Virginia Bonner

Your dream day can become a reality when you enlist the services of professional event planners and floral designers like Rachel Plummer and Virginia Bonner. From the big ticket items like securing a location, to the tiniest detail in the floral décor, they will ensure your wedding or event has all that you desire. Rachel and Virginia are the co-owners of Floral Design and Event Planning in Columbus and they sat down with SVM to give us the inside scoop on choosing a great venue, making a statement and keeping an eye out for the hidden costs associated with the wedding planning process. What makes a good event and wedding planner? Someone who can relate to and understand the clients' vision for their special day/party. Someone with enthusiasm for the event who makes organization a top priority, is capable of thinking creatively and, from experience, knows all about the finer components of event planning.

What is your recipe for success? We always strive to please the hosts of the event - understanding what style they prefer (formal, casual, trendy) and working to achieve that outcome for them. This includes making venue recommendations, catering suggestions, timelines and logistical decisions. Always remember that prior planning prevents poor performance!

What should we consider when venue hunting? The location should be convenient with ample parking that accommodates the size of the event. Other considerations are: does it allow outside caterers, what can the venue provide (tables, chairs, lighting, etc.), will it add to the special memories of the event and, most important, does it fit within your budget.

How can I make a statement? By choosing a style that reflects your personal taste and working with your event planner to maintain that style throughout all aspects of the event.

What should we consider when choosing our menu? You should consider whether you prefer a seated meal or buffet with regional favorites (barbecue, shrimp, fried chicken) or something more formal or trendy. The menu should be balanced, pleasing to the eye as well as to the palate and, of course, be within your budget. The fancier the food, the more you will pay.

What hidden costs should we look out for? Added on charges might include services like servers, bartenders, tips, set-up fees, etc. There also might be rental fees for linens, candelabra, silverware, glasses— depending on the venue. The event planner should ensure that all charges are spelled out in the contract beforehand. It all depends on the budget! svm

WEDDINGS

Sweet I DO’S Your choice in wedding cake design makes a statement about your personality and sense of style. Cake designer Cheryl Heider is the go-to-girl to create simple designs or elaborate multi-tiered masterpieces.

By Kristen Brown • Photos by S. Saxon here are many elements to a perfect wedding ceremony; the dress, flowers, venue, food and, of course, the cake! A sugary, ornate masterpiece made for all your guests to admire and enjoy. In Columbus, Cheryl Heider, owner and cake decorator at Pat-A-Cakes, works closely with brides, grooms and wedding planners to create a cake to wow your guests and their taste buds.

T

How did you get involved with making wedding cakes? I have always been fascinated with the beauty and elegance of wedding cakes. A friend of mine started the business and after 6 months offered me the opportunity to buy her out. I was in finance for 30 years and decided to make a life changing career move. What process do you take brides through to create their perfect wedding cake? When choosing a wedding cake, most of the men leave the design up to their fiancées. The brides usually know if they want something simple and elegant or a design with a lot of color and flair. What new wedding cake trend do you see more brides doing? With the uncertainty of the economy, I am seeing a trend for smaller weddings with a tighter budget. There are many options you can choose from and still stay in your budget and have a beautiful wedding cake. What are the most popular fillings or cake flavors you're seeing? With most of the wedding cakes consisting of 3 tiers, couples have a variety of flavor choices. They can choose a different flavor for each tier or keep it all in one flavor. A majority of the cakes usually consist of vanilla and chocolate cake with red velvet, strawberry or lemon as other choices. How has cake-making changed through the years? Wedding cakes in the past were more traditional in style. It seems that brides today lean toward more individuality and trendy styles and colors. What is the average cost for a wedding cake? The average wedding cake runs about $475.00. Are Cupcakes a good alternative to a Wedding Cake? I have worked with a few brides who want cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. This trend is normally for a less formal affair but is just as beautiful. svm soviewsmag.com

[ aussie fizz ] Australian [yellow tail] Bubbles is created with a simple philosophy in mind, to make a great wine that everyone can enjoy, anytime, any place. By Kristen Brown

asella Wines is the owner and distributor of one of the fastest growing brands in the entire history of branding: the Yellow Tail Wine label. [yellow tail] is currently the number one imported brand in the US market, which is the world's fastest growing consumer market.

C

Casella Wines was founded by Italian couple Filippo and Maria Casella who decided to move to Australia in search for a peaceful life in 1957. The couple had a history with grape growing and when they arrived in Australia they decided to continue indulging in their family tradition by growing grapes and selling them to wine producers. In 1969, Filippo decided to use his grapes to produce his own wines. John Casella, son of the couple, took over the family business in 1994 and made the decision to expand the winery. Today, the winery remains family owned and has been awarded several Exporters of the Year Awards from the Agribusiness sector of Australia. The Casella family was looking through a dictionary for kangaroo names and came across the name Yellow Tail in parenthesis for one of Australia’s common kangaroos the Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby. They decided that this would be the name of their new export wine and decided to leave the parenthesis for recognizability. All the wine [yellow tail] makes is instantly recognizable, both for its appearance and its personality. [yellow tail] Bubbles is created with a simple philosophy in mind, to make a great wine that everyone can enjoy, anytime, any place. It’s playful, fresh and vibrant, just like the guys who make it. This is no champagne-wannabe. This is sparkling, bubbly goodness ready to brighten ordinary moments, every day. [yellow tail] Bubbles White is a vibrant, light straw color with zesty, tropical fruit on the nose and a palate of fresh, fruity flavors with citrus hints. The finish is crisp and refreshing. [yellow tail] Bubbles Rosé is delightfully fresh, fruity and soft with great palate length. Lifted aromas of fresh strawberries and spice are united with flavors of sweet cherries and tropical fruits. [yellow tail] is distributed in the United States through W.J. Deutsch, one of the largest wine importers in the United States, and by Georgia Crown Distributing Co. in Georgia. Try [yellow tail], enjoy it, share it, love it. And, while it is seriously good wine, don’t get too serious about it. svm

MIMOSA INGREDIENTS: • 1 oz orange juice • 3 oz [ yellow tail] bubbles sparkling white.

INTERVIEW

FLORALFrenzy

Lulie Wallace looks at a canvas with an artist's eye—and the results are true showpieces. Interview by Kristen Brown olumbus native, Lulie Wallace, has a passion for painting rustic landscapes and her unique expressionist approach captures the texture of materials through a study of light and shadow. She studied art at the College of Charleston earning her Bachelor of Arts in Painting. Lulie sat down with SVM to discuss her love of color, her current artistic inspiration and the importance of authenticity in her work. Some of her work will be on display at the Let There Be Art! event at the Columbus Museum on April 16, or visit her website, www.luliewallace.com

C

When did you first become attracted to the arts? When did you begin painting? I remember painting with my mom when I was younger. She did a lot of nursery themed watercolors and would put them up in our rooms or give them to friends for baby presents. I loved sitting beside her while she worked. She would sketch me pictures that she would let me fill in with paint. I also always looked forward

61 soviewsmag.com

to art classes throughout my academic career. They were the highlight of my school day. What various subject matters do you paint? Do you always sit down knowing exactly what you're going to paint? This past year, I have focused heavily on still life flowers. I can’t seem to get enough of them! I love color and feel like flowers have been a really cool way just to explore my palate. I think I have probably painted a vase of flowers over one hundred times in the past two years, but each time I learn a little something different. Which painting took you the longest? In one of my painting classes at College of Charleston we set aside five classes (four hours each) to paint a 5x4 ft painting of a figure. It was very difficult to get the proportions just right because the scale was so huge! The painting of the figure currently hangs in my parents’ foyer, but I told them once I have a big enough spot for that painting, I’m swiping it back! It was long and tedious work, but it is one of my favorite paintings I’ve ever done.

Do you have anyone that influenced your work? I had an amazing painting professor in college named Professor Peacock. Although the themes of our paintings are very different, I can see a lot of techniques that he passed down to me in the way I approach a painting. He was always very encouraging and incredibly helpful! Is being authentic a concern for you? It is important to me. Lately I have really been trying to push my flowers even further to create a painting that ideally looks like a vase of flowers that no one else would produce. I’ve started adding prints in the backgrounds to resemble wallpaper and objects in the foreground such as lemons and vases. I feel like authenticity is what makes a piece of art special. It is always a big compliment when someone comes up to me and says, “I saw that painting across the room and without even looking, I could tell that it was a Lulie painting”.

INTERVIEW

Do you have a favorite painter that you follow and why? Not really. I can’t say that I have an all time favorite. I am drawn to both the abstract expressionists and impressionists. I love exploring museums in new cities and I definitely draw inspiration from artists such as Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard, Kandinsky, and de Kooning. What is the hardest part of painting for you? I find the figure very challenging. It can definitely be intimidating and frustrating painting a portrait of someone because the teeny tiniest details can make a gigantic difference. I feel like any painting is a like a puzzle. You have to balance out shapes and colors within the canvas. For me, a portrait is just a lot more difficult to solve. What is something you enjoy doing while not painting? My husband and I currently live in downtown Charleston and I l just love exploring this town! We love walking our little Labradoodle, Abe, going out to fun restaurants, and walking to the grocery store and cooking up something delicious. svm

Home Designer Leslie Wolfe irresistibly blends modern furniture with unique antique pieces for the Dorchak’s home.

HOME

or seven years now John and Angie Dorchak have lived in a home that incorporates their differing ideas of style and comfort. With an eclectic style and a dramatic love for color and detail, Angie Dorchak relishes the uniqueness of her home. Architect Jack Jenkins described her dream for the house best when he said, “This needs to feel like Zsa Zsa Gabor moved to the country!” John on the other hand, is a purist in his design aesthetic and appreciates natural and older elements. Even their favorite rooms expose the stark contrast of designs.

F

John’s favorite room in the house is the Falls Room. The use of Nano Walls in the room allow you to feel like you are part of the surrounding nature outdoors and the ceiling is made of reclaimed sinker cypress that has beautiful color variation in the individual pieces. Angie’s favorite room in the house is her closet. It has floor to ceiling raised fabric wall paper by Osbourne and Little. All of the trim work was hand finished to match the wall paper and they added black chandeliers and purple carpet to complete the look. Despite these differences, they both agree that the major selling points of the home were the amazing views of the creek and surrounding natural areas. With the expert eye of designer Leslie Wolfe, the home is a beautiful fusion of design preferences and shows how opposites can attract to create a home that leaves a lasting impression. svm

INTERVIEW

THE MARKET The Woodruff Company unveils a unique public marketplace at The Landings where organic produce, green products, and a great mix of vendors becomes your Saturday morning destination. By Kristen Brown

he Market, an outdoor market featuring various vendors at The Landings, is opening for the 2011 season on April 23. The Market provides a one-of-a-kind experience for children and families in Columbus by creating a gathering spot for social interaction, life enriching activities, and knowledge enhancing opportunities while providing high quality food, farm, plant, and craft products at a convenient location. If you’re planning a visit Columbus, you’ll want to be sure to include The Landings popular outdoor market on your things to do list.

T

LOCATION: The Landings, to the right of Kinnucans on Airport Thruway. HOURS: Saturdays April 23-August 8:30am to12:30pm Spring/Summer; September-December 19, 9am to 1pm Fall/Winter. Special DateS: November 10, Grand Christmas Lighting of The Landings 5pm to 8:30pm; December 18 & 19, join the Budweiser Clydesdales at The Market.

Melisa Santimo The Bakery & Café at the Rose Cottage Your company, The Bakery & Café at Rose Cottage, is one of the vendors at The Market at The Landings this season. What products will you be featuring and what is your specialty? Our specialty is European-style breads and pastries Can you explain what it means for your bakery to be GMO-free (genetically modified organisms)? GMOs are unfortunately found in the ingredients of most foods today. GMOs are used by commercial food producers to enhance their production. Unfortunately for the consumer, the side-effects of GMOs are not immediately noticeable. At The Bakery & Café at Rose Cottage, we are striving to use GMOfree ingredients in the flours we use. The remaining ingredients are organic, chemical-free, regional and local at every possible avail. We strive to bring a healthy and sustainable product to the consumer. How did you decide to create a bakery with GMO-free options? Was it challenging to create recipes to accommodate this? Deciding to create a GMO-free, local and sustainable was not difficult at all. It was the logical choice. And, certainly all recipes are simply enhanced by using the healthiest and freshest products available. Promoting “healthy carbs” is no easy task. How do you hope to spread the word about your products and the benefits they provide? Carbohydrates are a vital nutritional ingredient to a healthy body. Healthy carbohydrates are a source of sugar that slowly metabolizes and provides our bodies with long-term energy.

INTERVIEW Chris French Lead Organic Farmer Where did your passion for organic farming come from? From my Dad. We always had a greenhouse and grew all types of flowers. AT 52 he developed cancer and in his last days he preached to me about exposure to chemicals in fumigation and other chemicals. He felt like that was why he developed cancer and was dying. I have always thought about doing it a better way. These days, everyone seems to be going organic. Why do you think the organic concept has been so successful? It`s better for you with no chemicals over the long haul. It also tastes better. The Market at The Landings is a unique concept in Columbus, how the idea started and what are you trying to accomplish? For me, I am trying to teach people the difference between conventional and organic so they can make a logical choice. Our veggies taste better and are good for you. One of the wonderful things about organic gardening is that there are a lot of ways to do it, no one right way. What vegetables can we find in your garden right now? We have 5 varieties of squash, 6 tomatoes, 8 peppers, 3 cucumbers, 2 eggplant, 2 okra, 2 corn, 2 watermelon, 2 cantaloupe and rotate throughout the year.

Carmen Johnston Nectar and Company How did you become involved with The Market at the Landings? Nectar and Company creates the container gardens at The Landings. Through this relationship, Lucy Jones and I have been able to travel extensively throughout the country and around the world. We both became enamored with the buy local movement that had taken root in the area and wanted to expand on that. Through The Market at The Landings, we are able to create a space for local artisans, share an opportunity for families to shop together, and bring an authentic market experience to the people of Columbus. You’ll be featuring your products at the opening Market on April 23. What will you be showcasing for the Columbus audience? I’ve handpicked varieties that are grown in local greenhouses. Plants grown in Michigan just don’t thrive here in the South. We want your family to join our family in keeping it local. From Pretty Much Picasso by Proven Winners to the new Black Velvet petunias from Ball Seed and from graceful touches, to statement pieces, this sale is about inspiring the women, and men, of this community to get excited about decorating their homes, inside and out, with bright, bold, beautiful plants that will bring a smile to the their family’s faces. You’re an avid gardener, where does your passion and inspiration stem from? I grew up gardening with my father, who was from Austria. Gardening was a part of our daily life. Now it’s a passion that my husband and I, in fact - our entire family, shares. But I don’t see that in all of my friend’s lives. My business is built around inspiring our generation and the next to get their hands dirty. That means combining the rush of cutting edge design with the nostalgia of your grandmother’s victory garden. Your gardening expertise is in container gardening. What does this particular style of gardening involve? There are three really important concepts to remember when you are container gardening: • Always start with a good foundation. Select a quality container that is different, striking. I believe that containers are an investment piece. Fill the container with the best soil you can find. We’ll be selling Fafard 3B at The Market. • Always choose the RIGHT plants. When you’re selecting them, don’t be afraid to ask questions. And don’t be afraid to go big! • I like to use the triangle theory. That means that you want height in the back, texture towards the front, and something to spill and bloom that will soften the edges of the container. My new favorite combo is King Tut for height, Pretty Much Picasso for color, and Snow Princess for texture. soviewsmag.com

ESCAPE to ST. LUCIA

From romantic couples retreats to stylish family getaways, some of Saint Lucia’s top destinations await you.

s a honeymoon specialist, I’m always looking for the most romantic getaways for brides and grooms, which is why the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia is one of my best-selling destinations. I took a quick trip to this tropical paradise to explore thirteen resorts in four days, but I’ve narrowed it down to my top three picks for honeymooners.

A

CAP MAISON With its white villas set against the perfect backdrop of a cerulean blue sea, Cap Maison is perhaps the most picturesque of St. Lucia’s resorts. The first thing I noticed was the welcoming environment. With only 50 rooms, the property feels more like a private residence than a hotel. “Nothing was designed on the drawing board to make it romantic,” said General Manager Ross Stevenson, “but the end product is a place where people feel very comfortable.” Producers of The Bachelor certainly agreed; they selected Cap Maison as their resort of choice for the penultimate rose ceremony on Season 14.

93 soviewsmag.com

The resort’s most popular accommodation among honeymooners boasts picture-perfect views from a private terrace and rooftop pool. Stevenson even suggests having the staff set up a private dinner on the rooftop terrace. “We like to make it as personal and focused on the couple as we possibly can.” Cap Maison is the perfect choice for honeymooners who want the privacy of a villa and the convenience of resort amenities. Guests can choose to relax in Spa Maison and dine at Cliff at Cap, which changes menus daily to accommodate guests’ needs. As an added benefit, wine enthusiasts will love the on-property wine cellar and private tastings from the collection of over 200 hand selected wines from 13 countries. Rooms starting at $405 per night plus 18% tax based on double occupancy. Ask me to set up a private dinner at Rock Maison, a deck located on a rocky crag surrounded by the ocean. Order an extra bottle of champagne and the bartender will send it down by way of a champagne zip line!

SANDALS GRANDE ST. LUCIAN During my time in St. Lucia, I stayed at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian in the comfort of a butler-level suite. My personal butler took care of my every need, like unpacking my bags upon arrival, bringing me an extra piña colada on the beach, and drawing up rose petal baths in the evening. I welcome anyone to challenge this level of service. Since Sandals Grande St. Lucian is an all inclusive resort, guests won’t have to stress over budgeting during their trip. All food and drinks, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, airport transfers, gratuities, and non-motorized water sports are included in the upfront price. “We offer our clients more value for their money,” says General Manager Winston Anderson. Anderson held true to his word when he invited my group to dine inside the iconic Sandals Sunset Tower, where that value was evident. We were treated to succulent lobster tails and the finest cuts of steak, as well as premium drinks.

TRAVEL This level of quality extends to the seven on-property restaurants, which consist mainly of intimate, à la carte options for the most romantic experience.

Lobster at Cap Maison.

For even more choices, Sandals Grande St. Lucian provides an hourly shuttle to the other two Sandals properties in St. Lucia, taking the total number of included dining options to a whopping seventeen. Because the property is adults and couples only, guests need not worry about screaming children at the pool or spring breakers partying in the room next door. A honeymoon at Sandals is all about focusing on one another. “Everything we do here is for two people in love,” Anderson stated. Although the Grande St. Lucian is about 300 rooms, the smaller property size gives it an intimate feel. For a truly unique experience, check out the Rondovals, which are round, villa-like accommodations that Anderson refers to as, “Suites with a difference.”

Jade Mountain is in a truly breathtaking location in one of St. Lucia’s most desirable areas.

Sandals Grande St.Lucian Beach.

Rooms starting at $452 per night, based on double occupancy. Ask me about arranging a helicopter transfer from the airport to the resort. The included car transfer takes about an hour and a half, but the helicopter gets you there in half an hour and you get to see the island of St. Lucia by sky!

JADE MOUNTAIN Honeymooners seeking the most serene environment for relaxation and romance should look no further than Jade Mountain. With its winding walkways and bubbling koi ponds, I immediately noticed a feeling of tranquility. “Jade Mountain has been designed for the celebration of life and, above all, love,” explained Karolin Troubetzkoy, Director of Operations. Perhaps this is why Jade Mountain has been voted the most romantic resort in the Carribean. Because of its hilltop location, each sanctuary has stunning views of the Piton Mountains, St. Lucia’s most notable geographic landmarks. The boutique property of less than 30 rooms boasts magnificent accommodations. Each room, or “sanctuary,” is missing the fourth wall, which allows couples a unique open-air experience in their room. Almost all of the sanctuaries feature private infinity pools, which softly cascade over the edge of the missing wall, creating the illusion that the pools are spilling into the distant sea. While not relaxing in their private sanctuaries, honeymooners can enjoy the two white sand beaches, escorted snorkeling trips, and much more. Couples staying at Jade Mountain also have exclusive privileges to Anse Chastanet resort, which provides more on-property dining options and resort facilities. Room rates at Jade Mountain start around $950 per night for a room with a jacuzzi (not the pool rooms).

Loyal guests often describe this Sandals gem as the “closest vacation to a picture postcard” with its awe-inspiring panoramic views.

COLUMBUS TRAVEL PERKS Cap Maison: Upgrade on arrival (subject to availability), daily breakfast, 4 nights or more receive a $100 spa credit.

INTERVIEW

WITH

ONEONONE SHANNON BREAM

ern By Stacey Leeb

Reporter for FOX News, who grew up in the south, has found a job that combines her experience in law with her long-standing passion for news.

ox News Channel Supreme Court reporter, Shannon Bream, wasn’t always the poised and energetic reporter we see in front of the camera today. Bream, who earned a law degree from Florida State University after graduating from Liberty University, spent several years practicing law before transitioning into the broadcast world. Her leap of faith was met with some criticism, but her faith in God and passion for broadcasting outweighed the negativity.

F

equipped me with certain real-life skills I couldn’t learn in a classroom. I traveled to places and met people I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. Oh the adventures!

What is a typical day like for you at Fox News? There are none! Each day brings a new assignment, sometimes a new city. I love the diversity of spending one day at the Supreme Court, and the next on the campaign trail. The days can be long, but they fly by. We stay busy with live reports, interviews, radio, blogging and research. I’ve never once looked at my watch and thought, “This day is dragging…”

She graciously sat down with SVM to discuss her professional transition, social networking and her title as Miss Virginia 1990.

‘‘

The best lesson I learned from my days as a lawyer is that there are always multiple sides to every story. It often takes some digging to ferret out the truth, and that’s our job.

You speak of having strong Christian values. Is this what led you to attend Liberty University? That was certainly a big part of the equation. I was intrigued by the opportunity to study theology, along with my chosen major— and to be a part of a community that found great purpose and hope in a shared faith. Plus, I’d visited several times and had the time of my life. What gave you the courage to give up a promising law career for an entry level job at a Tampa TV station? I always find the “square peg in a round hole” metaphor is the best description of what I was doing while practicing law. It wasn’t an impossible task, but it was the wrong fit for me. My heart was elsewhere, and it took a year of seeking advice from people inside and outside the news business before I took the leap. I think I was the world’s oldest intern when I got my first chance to work in a newsroom! It was a necessary part of my journey, and gave me a real taste of what I was getting in to. In the end, it would have been much scarier for me to stay where I was than to follow my passion. You have competed in both the Miss America and the Miss USA pageants. How has that participation helped you in life and in your career? Both experiences taught me the value of in-depth preparation, fighting through obstacles and thinking on my feet. They were such unique opportunities, and

place, and I believe you could spend a lifetime telling the stories that originate here. I want to keep doing that in some form or fashion for many years to come!

A self-described “news junkie,” Bream graduated from North Florida Christian and Liberty University before earning a law degree From Florida State University.

What social networking sites do you participate in? Which is your favorite and why? You can find me chirping away at twitter.com/shannonbream and on facebook as well. I go through spurts when I’m completely engaged in the online world, but also take sabbaticals. Regardless of the platform, my favorite social media thing to do is to upload pictures of what I’m doing throughout the day—especially if I’m somewhere interesting like the White House. You have called your job a "dream job." Is there anything you still want to do career wise? I find Washington to be a fascinating

’’

Often you are recognized for being legitimate, accurate and honest in your reporting. Do you consider this to be a personality trait or traits you have aspired to have as a reporter? The best lesson I learned from my days as a lawyer is that there are always multiple sides to every story. It often takes some digging to ferret out the truth, and that’s our job. I like that when I meet people they have questions about where I stand personally. They should never be able to tell through my work. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working? I’m still that middle school nerd who always has her nose buried in a book, but when I can get out of town there’s nothing like spending a day in the middle of nowhere fly fishing with my husband. svm

INTERVIEW Bream spent several years practicing law before transitioning into the broadcast world.

Shannon got a taste of television in 1999, when she was picked as a “citizen panelist on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect talk show on ABC. Picked from more than 50 who auditioned at a Tampa mall, Bream appeared on the show with comic Robert Klein, actress Mary Stuart Masterson and conservative commentator Horace Cooper. ART

Columbus Public Columbus Art in public places is changing the face of the community. By Hannah Israel • Photos by R. Caligaris

T

Supported by the City of Columbus, Uptown Columbus, Columbus State University, W.C. Bradley Co. and CB&T, Sculpture Walk demonstrates civic and corporate pride. Located in the center of Uptown Columbus, this public arts project has been inviting and commissioning artists to transform sites and streetscapes annually. The sculptures placed throughout Broadway between 10th and 13th Street create a path connecting the streets, storefronts, Uptown events, outdoor market, and Columbus State University RiverPark campus life. This joint partnership between the city, university and businesses affirms that an educational environment enhances and supports a creative culture.

he relationship between art and community has an inspiring and compelling influence. The impact of art in public spaces in Columbus has changed the social and economical landscape of the city for several decades. With the introduction of the Riverwalk Project, Heritage Park, and Sculpture Walk, revitalization through public art has defined Columbus as a notable location to visit and live. In 1992 the Riverwalk Project introduced a new perspective for public art in Columbus, Georgia. The federal government in 1987–1988 required an enhancement to the city’s sewage and water systems. Through this requirement the city proposed to revitalize the area by designing a one of a kind multipurpose landscape project that outlines the path along the Chattahoochee river and the city’s historic district, and extends all the way to the largest infantry base in the country, Fort Benning. Within the Riverwalk, sculptures and historic displays are placed through out the stretch. Visitors enjoy and explore the 15 miles of paths and landscapes by foot or bicycle. Following the footsteps of the RiverWalk, other projects were designed and installed to develop more art on public grounds. A joint project by the Historic Columbus Foundation and the City of Columbus, Heritage Park is an outdoor museum in the Historic District that features sculptures, fountains, park, and displays. Regional artists, such as George Goddard and Jon Lumpkin, were commissioned to develop and create sculptures that reflect the history of Columbus.

“Dr. Pemberton” by John Lumpkin

Art in public places will continue to manifest itself in ways poetic, profound, educational and provocative. For the past three decades the impact of public art in Columbus has been evident. Placing art in the community has assisted the development of the urbanization of the landscape. Through this unique transformation, the City of Columbus has been placed on the map as a historical and contemporary cultural focal point in the South. svm
