“The key to keeping your teeth is early detection of irreversible decay,” explains Dr. John Linstrom of Linstrom Family Dental in Medford. “I’ve seen how much people suffer when they are already symptomatic. If we identify the problem soon enough, we can usually save the tooth.” For Dr. Linstrom, microscopeenhanced dentistry is at the heart of his preventive-based practice. He became fascinated with the use of microscopes as a diagnostic tool for early decay detection when he was a doctoral student at top-ranked UCLA School of Dentistry. When Dr. Linstrom opened his practice in Medford in 2000, he soon bought his first dental microscope. “Once I got the microscope, the difference in my ability to accurately diagnose and treat patients was like night and day,” he says. “It was like turning the
lights on in a room rather than feeling around. It was immediately clear to me that the more magnification, the more accurate I could be.” In each operatory, a microscopemounted camera allows the patients and staff to see the same incredible view the doctor sees – live – in 4K video quality. “Patients say they are amazed and grateful to observe our commitment to precision,” says Dr. Linstrom. “This shared live view creates complete transparency, a true quantum leap beyond the traditional intra-oral camera. Using the microscope, we can detect and verify the presence of irreversible decay sooner than with conventional techniques, thereby giving the patient the option of treating the decay sooner, with the smallest restoration possible, which means less discomfort and faster recovery times for my patients.” In September 2019 at the annual meeting of the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry, Dr. Linstrom became one of just 20 dentists certified in the use of the microscope using 14-power magnification. To date, AMED has members from over 37 countries, working to educate the dental community on the use of the microscope in dental procedures. Dr. Linstrom has
lectured at UCLA on the benefits and application of the microscope. Dr. Linstrom Family Dental accepts patients for general, restorative and cosmetic dentistry. With extensive experience with veneers and aesthetic reconstruction, he has been able to help his patients achieve dramatic results with smile makeovers.
