ABOUT MAINZ THE MUSIC AND AUDIO INSTITUTE OF NEW ZEALAND MAINZ programmes are designed for music makers, and will introduce you to the industry. The faculty, which comes under the umbrella of Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), has campuses in Christchurch and Auckland. On offer are introductory short courses, through to certificate, diploma degree and graduate diploma level qualifications. Subjects covered include music performance, DJ and electronic music production, live sound, audio engineering

SYDNEY HEREMAIA Singer, Songwriter, Musician and Stage Show Performer Music has always been a big part of Sydney Heremaia’s life, so it was a logical step to progress from playing the guitar and singing with his whanau at parties, to doing the Certificate in Contemporary Music at MAINZ and taking his passion to the next level. It’s a decision the singer, songwriter, musician and stage show performer says ‘transformed’ him. “Studying at MAINZ helped me discover who I am. Yes, you learn the theory

and practical aspects of performance but it’s delivered in a way that is safe and judgement free. The tutors there treat you with such respect which really helped me flourish, not only as an artist, but as a person.” There have been a lot of highlights in his performing career since completing the course in 2002, including working with Tina Cross, Jackie Clarke and Susan Lynch. He has also been involved in some large company musicals, The

Buddy Holly Show, Cabaret and Cats; and trained in acting and worked alongside Bryan Divers, Rob Pollock, Jan Fisher and Kelly Johnston. Not bad for a boy who grew up in Otangarei, Whangarei – a suburb notorious for gangs, drugs and stray dogs. “MAINZ provided me a strong foundation in theoretical knowledge and music performance techniques, transferrable skills that have helped in all performances, working with others and

self-devised works. I strongly recommend MAINZ to anyone who has a passion for music and the production of music. You will be transformed.” Sydney lives and works in Whangarei as a social worker, but does one or two musicals or theatre pieces a year and still writes and plays with other musicians doing the Northland circuit of bars and pubs, while he is also working on an originals album.

Designed to provide learning experiences that enable students to develop the core knowledge, skills and personal attributes sought by employers and required for entry-level positions in music and entertainment industries.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to: • Search, comprehend, use and communicate information from a variety of texts and digital media relevant to the context • Apply basic knowledge, including literacy and numeracy skills, to solve problems relevant to the context • Reflect on experiences with a range of people, cultures and communities

• Work collaboratively and effectively in a team or group to achieve a task or outcome • Develop and reflect on relevant learning and career goals APPLICATION CRITERIA • Hold NCEA Level 1 literacy credits (minimum of 10 credits) or equivalent • Applicants may also be required to provide alternative evidence if requested, of their ability to achieve the programme. Applicants will need to meet the following entry criteria:

The purpose of the programme is to allow students interested in music industry careers to sample a variety of pathways while working through entry level audio engineering, music performance, live sound and event management. This course provides a pathway and qualifications for musical, non-academic students primarily focused on developing musicianship, recording and live sound skills.

• Hold a Level 2 qualification or have 45 credits at Level 2 in relevant subjects (ie. music, literacy, numeracy) • If English is a second language, applicants must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 • Be a minimum of 16 years of age Applicants may be required to attend an interview in order to ascertain that this is a suitable programme of study for them.

DJ AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC PRODUCTION Musician, producer, entertainer â&#x20AC;¦ a great DJ knows how to select and mix the tracks that keep the party buzzing. Learn the art of DJ and discover the power and potential of electronic music.

COURSE OUTLINE Graduates of this qualification will be able to: • Use electronic music production and DJ techniques and processes to create and produce electronic music • Create and produce electronic music using a range of sound and electronic music hardware and software, as well as music production and DJ techniques • Apply music and sonic theory to create and produce electronic music • Perform as a DJ with confidence and ability for an audience • Create and produce electronic music and other sound-related works

• Apply a broad range of research skills to inform own DJ practice • Operate in DJ and related industries using a range of personal and interpersonal skills and safe practices • Apply understanding of the DJ and electronic music industry to develop own career plan APPLICATION CRITERIA • Applicants should be 16 years of age, or older, have successfully completed NCEA Level 1 or equivalent, and have achieved a minimum of eight credits at NCEA Level 1 in English • Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria, if they can demonstrate a history of work or industry experience which in the opinion of the Programme Manager exhibits a likelihood of success in the programme of study • All applicants are required to attend an interview. Preference will be given to those with a high standard of achievement at NCEA Level 2 or above and/or experience in DJ or music production. If available, providing examples of music production or DJ mixes is recommended

COURSE OUTLINE This programme is for individuals who wish to develop their experience and practice in the production of complex electronic music and performance as a DJ. It provides the music industry with performers who have an extended repertoire of DJ and electronic music production skills to perform competently and creatively. APPLICATION CRITERIA • Applicants must have completed the requirements for NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) or have successfully completed the NZ Certificate in DJ and Electronic Music Production Level 4

• Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme • Applicants may be required to attend an audition • Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria if they can demonstrate a history of work, industry experience, or (in the opinion of the Programme Leader) could successfully complete the programme • Consideration will be given to students who progress through other SIT/MAINZ programme pathways (e.g. Certificate in DJEMP L4, Certificate in Foundation Sound and Music L2, Certificate in Live Sound L4) • Preference will be given to applicants with Merit or Excellence passes in maths, physics and music at, or above, the level specified • Providing examples of music production or DJ mixes is also recommended where possible • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 Academic, with no band lower than 5.0

DJ BANTY DJ / Producer

When Helen Collins – aka DJ Banty – first saw a woman DJ mixing at a club, she realised that was the career path she wanted to take. “I visited a bar in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2006 and saw a female DJ playing. Up until then I had never realised there were female DJs out there and it triggered a desire in me to become one too.” She moved to New Zealand in 2012 and started to do some “mostly bedroom DJing” around 2014, before

finding out about the DJ and Electronic Music Production course at MAINZ that would help her to achieve her goal. Since graduating in March 2017 she has been pursuing a career as a DJ/producer playing in clubs and at events around Auckland. “I believe going to MAINZ was one of the best decisions I have made so far because it helped fulfill my dream to become a DJ. Being able to make my own music and DJ in a professional atmosphere is just a dream come true and

I’m looking forward to even greater opportunities in the future.” Nigerian-born, DJ Banty says music is a big part of her culture. “It’s the DNA that flows in the veins of all Nigerians. I love hearing electronic and Afrobeat come together.” She encourages other people contemplating a music career of any sort to follow their hearts and pursue their dreams.

Graduates of the Lighting strand will be able to safely install, operate and remove lighting equipment to meet the production and lighting plan requirements for a range of complex performances and events.

• Applicants should be 16 years of age, or older, have successfully completed NCEA Level 1 or equivalent, and have achieved a minimum standard of eight credits at NCEA Level 1 in English

Graduates of the Live Sound strand will be able to safely install, operate and remove sound equipment to meet the production and sound plan requirements for a range of complex performances and events or a live recording.

• Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria, if they can demonstrate a history of work or industry experience which in the opinion of the Programme Managers exhibits a

PATRICK HILL Bachelor of Audio Engineering and Production

Music was always playing at home when Patrick Hill was a kid so embarking on a career in the industry was a natural choice for the former MAINZ student. Patrick, who completed a Bachelor of Audio Engineering & Production in 2017, is now the In-House Engineer at Roundhead Studios in Auckland. The role has seen him engineer and assist on sessions with incredible artists such as Neil Finn, SWIDT, City of Souls, Delaney Davidson, Stan Walker and many more.

“I grew up in rural South Canterbury with my two younger brothers. From a young age we were exposed to a wide range of music. My father, Davie, has an incredible talent for music knowledge, which he shared and imparted into us growing up.” Patrick credits landing the dream job at New Zealand’s premier music studio, in part, to doing the degree. “People might tell you, ‘you can learn it yourself,’ or ‘just be a bedroom producer’.

But the truth is, only a small percentage of those guys will become a professional. If you want to be a professional, then act like a professional and learn at MAINZ. You won’t regret it. You’ll be a million miles ahead of those who stayed in the bedroom for those three years by the time you finish.” The role at Roundhead Studios also requires him to hire new staff at times, and Patrick admits he “doesn’t even look at the applications if they haven’t undertaken

any tertiary study. It sounds harsh but that is how most of the industry work. MAINZ tells you what is out there, teaches you what you need to know, and connects you right into the industry.” He is unsure of exactly what the future holds, but wants to keep working with great artists and continuing to bring good music to the world – whether that be in New Zealand or around the globe.

When she can, singersongwriter Mel Parsons heads home to recharge, but much of the time she lives out of a suitcase, touring and performing all over the world. Mel’s passion is music, telling stories through song, reaching out to, and drawing her audience in, and judging by the lush sounds and lyricism of her latest album Drylands, her reputation is set to soar. Mel was already focused on a career in music when she moved to Auckland in 2002 to do the Diploma in Contemporary Music Performance.

She thrived at MAINZ, honing her performance skills, starting to build a repertoire of original songs, learning from and alongside like-minded people. “One of the most valuable things about studying at MAINZ is the connections you make. The tutors also work in the industry, they live the experience, and the friends you make are the people you’re in business with.” Mel’s followed her dream and life is good. “I feel very, very fortunate to be able to make it work.”
