s we start this new academic year, I am reminded of the words of our 2013 Commencement Speaker and honorary Degree recipient, Army Two-Star general Barrye Price. he told SVC’s graduates that day, This event is one of life’s defining moments… you’ve had a transformative experience—be transformed by it! …Embrace this moment and your opportunities. general Price was speaking to our newest alumni about going out into the “real” world, but he was also speaking (whether by intention or not) to all of us at the College. SVC has undergone transformative experiences this past year and has been transformed by them—mostly in positive ways. Being nimble, as well as sensitive enough to manage and adjust to new situations and new people, we have made and continue to make the most of all of our opportunities. We are resilient, bouncing forward as we approach the new academic year. since our spring Chronicle only a few months ago, we have much to report: • The College is expanding our highly successful radiologic Sciences program. glens Falls hospital, the largest healthcare provider between Albany and montreal, is our newest clinical site and will provide a growing number of SVC students the opportunity to work with some of the best healthcare staff in the region; • The Accreditation Commission for education in Nursing (ACeN, formerly NLNAC) has determined for good cause to continue our Associate’s degree and rN to BSN accreditation through may 2014, and we are pursuing additional accreditation for our new pre-licensure four-year bachelor’s program and new rN to BSN program track from the prestigious Commission on Collegiate Nursing education (CCNe);
Carpe Diem, SVC! • The College has been acknowledged by the u.S. government for heeding President obama’s “8 Keys to Success” to help Veterans get degrees and find employment opportunities after their military service ends. We have also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Defense and are developing relationships with bases in New england, New York, North Carolina, and California. We joined the marine Corps’ Leadership Scholar Program, and we have successfully petitioned to open a chapter of the Student Veterans of America (SVA). These are all efforts to promote collegiate success of Veterans at SVC as we welcome our first cohort of Veterans Scholars in January 2014; and • The College has received more than $2 million in gifts in the last 100 days of the 2012-2013 academic year—gifts that will support scholarships, provide resources for faculty and staff, and give the campus a new landmark entrance through the gate on monument Avenue that, along with the gate house, are part of the original estate of edward everett. As the estate celebrates its 100th anniversary, we are delighted it is now “reunited”— made whole once again. With these worthy accomplishments, I am reminded of the wise words of another 2013 Commencement speaker, those of Janice Lachance, Ceo of the Special Libraries Association, who told our graduates: As I have begun to know you and your achievements, I know there is really no limit to how far you can go if you set your mind to it. I have enormous gratitude for all who have worked toward the success of SVC—our wonderful students and our hard-working staff, faculty, and remarkable trustees as well as the generosity of our many alumni and donors.
