Three Simple Summer Science and Engineering Projects for Kids

Time passes different at summer camp. It’s a year each time you go back yet it’s like you’ve never left.

Learning should not stop when a child leaves the classroom. In fact, the driving philosophy of STEAM schools is rooted in instructing children using real-life scenarios and experiences. As a parent, you can expand your child’s education far beyond the classroom with some easy and fun STEAM-related projects at home.

If your child is partial to engineering, there are some simple engineering projects for kids that you can do with them at home when school is out for the summer. Not only will these projects help spark your child’s passion for engineering and science, but they will also combat brain drain in the summer and foster engineering

design thinking. To get your child’s brain engaged in STEAM activities at home, try these exciting yet simple engineering projects for kids.

THE BOAT PROJECT

In this simple engineering project, your child will use household items to build a boat that can float in water and hold weight, like pennies or a toy car. Give your child straws, tape, Styrofoam plates, and plastic cups or bottles, and let them loose to create a seafaring craft.

Once their boat is complete, fill a large bucket with water and test to see if it floats. Once your child has created a sturdy craft, slowly increase

the weight to discover the boat’s max weight. Throughout the process, your child will be learning the basics of buoyancy while getting to play with water.

THE GUMDROP STRUCTURE CHALLENGE

This building challenge will have your children thinking about construction in a way that they might not have before. Give your child gumdrops and toothpicks, and ask them to form a structure that is sound enough to hold a heavy object like a textbook. The key is for them to figure out how to connect the toothpicks and gumdrops in such a way that creates a structure that can withstand the weight.

For this project, give them as many attempts as they need to get the structure right. Informed trial and er-

12

ror is the basis of the scientific method, so as they make modifications to their original structure, they will be learning about fundamental science and engineering concepts.

THE AIRCRAFT CHALLENGE

In this engineering project, your kids will build their own flying aircraft. Give your child some basic tools like tape, straws, paper, glue, and paper towel cardboard roll, and ask them to build a craft that will glide when launched.

Your kids will learn the basics of weight distribution and surface area during the project. When your kids complete their first successful flight, you can challenge them to reach a certain distance by making the necessary modifications to their craft.

TIPS FOR FILING YOUR 2023

INDIVIDUAL & BUSINESS TAX RETURNS

Based upon recent tax law changes and increasing complexity, I can’t think of a more important time to have your tax returns prepared professionally by a CPA.

It is critical that you remove the guesswork when you prepare your tax returns. Our firm is ready to review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented.

INDIVIDUALS

1. Pay careful attention to the Tax Filing Deadlines: Due Date & (Extension Deadlines). S Corporation and Partnership returns are due on March 15 (Extensions Sept. 15). Individual, Trust and C Corporation returns are due on April 15 (Extensions for Individual & C Corps on Oct. 15 and Trusts on Sept. 30).

3. Taxpayers age 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $100,000 directly out of their IRA. This reduces AGI and most likely will lower your tax bill. This is a huge tax savings if you are taking the Standard Deduction and no longer claiming charitable deductions.

4. If you had or will have a large capital gain, consider investing in a “Qualified Opportunity Zone” within 180 days of sale or exchange to defer and partially eliminate the initial capital gain in addition to having the potential of eliminating taxation on appreciation on the new investment property.

5. Depreciation expense rules have been expanded to allow greater deductibility on capital asset purchases including autos and qualified real property. The capability to determine how much you want to depreciate in the current year is a great tax planning opportunity to help the taxpayer fine tune the desired level of taxable income for 2023 and future years.

6. Anyone who receives employer stock options should seek a CPA for tax preparation. The Form 1099-B you receive may not correctly report your cost basis and many taxpayers mistakenly pay tax twice on the gains.

7. California tax laws have little conformity to the new Federal tax laws. Due to the differences in Federal and California law, it is quite possible that you will take the Standard Deduction on your Federal Return and Itemize for your California Return. More importantly, consider bunching itemized deductions into one year so these deductions will exceed the standard deduction for additional savings.

8. Taxpayers can change the tax treatment on their IRA contributions as late as the extension deadline for determining if their timely contribution will be treated as PreTax (Traditional), After-Tax (Roth IRA or Non-Deductible IRA). This is important to review prior to finalizing your returns. Contributions levels have increased, too.

9. IRS and CA both offer one-time late filing or payment penalty taxpayer abatements. You can request this every 4 years with the IRS for individuals, businesses, trusts and estates. CA allows it just one time and it is only for Individuals.

10. IRS withdrawals for Taxpayers under age 59.5 can avoid penalties on a maximum distribution of $22,000 if their home was in a Presidentially Declared Disaster zone in 2023 (most of CA). Income recognition can be spread over three years. Repayments of distributions can be recontributed within three years to avoid taxation.

11. Consider reducing your Medicare Premium Surcharge by keeping your Modified Adjusted Gross Income under specific income levels. A $1 difference can translate to an extra $839 in annual premiums.

12. Residential Rental Income for 15 days or less is not taxable income. This is often called the “Augusta Rule.” Review with your CPA to see if it applies to your home.

BUSINESSES

1. CA SDI Rate has been increased to 1.1% with no cap. Contact us if you want to evaluate if establishing an employer Voluntary Plan will create cost savings for the employees and indirectly lower an employer’s costs.

2. New Beneficial Ownership Reporting Requirement for new entities must be made

currently within 30 days of creation and by December 31, 2024 for existing entities. This is best handled by your CPA after tax season in October or November.

3. The CAL-Savers program mandated that employers with five or more employees participate in establishing Roth-IRA accounts for employees unless they established their own pension plan. For employers that started a new pension plan on their own, File Form 8881 to receive a Tax Credit for Pension Plan Startup Costs and Auto Enrollment.

4. Section 199A: Taxpayers may deduct up to 20% of their domestic “Qualified Business Income (QBI)”. QBI includes income from S corporations, Partnerships, LLCs taxed as S corporations or partnerships, Schedule C businesses, Schedule F farming activities and self-employment income reported as other income. It is extremely important that you classify your business with an accurate Principal Business Code since this will be a determinant if you qualify for QBI deduction at certain income levels.

5. Review to see if a 401k, SEP-IRA or Defined Benefit Plan is the most beneficial plan for saving pre or after tax. Plans and new increased contributions can now be established/paid for Tax Year 2023 as late as the extended due date for your return in 2024.

6. Important to review your Meals and Entertainment expenses in detail. For Federal purposes, Entertainment is no longer deductible (tickets and entertainment events). Business Meals, Travel Meals and Staff Meals for the Benefit of the Employer, are deductible at 50%. For California tax purposes, Entertainment expenses and Meals per above are deductible at 50%. Therefore, be sure to deduct Entertainment expense on your California return.

We have the pleasure of currently working with the Snyders. Irvin and Susan relocated to Laguna Woods during the summer of 2023 with their two cats and a dog. Snyders stay at home as they age, allowing them to stay together and enjoy their pets.

Home Automation Made Easy with LiveSmart Technologies

In the following interview, we asked Owner Gary Russell to share the benefits of incorporating simple automation systems into the home.

South County Magazine: Can you describe the benefits to users with a LiveSmart system?

Gary: The many benefits include money and energy savings, enhanced security, increased peace of mind and increased independence. I’ll share concrete examples of each:

SAVING MONEY + ENERGY

Saving money and energy practically go hand in hand. A smart thermostat allows you to change the temperature in your home or turn your lights on and off remotely. So even if you are away, you can quickly and easily operate the controls inside

your home from just about anywhere in the world.

ENHANCED SECURITY

A smart lock is a simple way to ensure that your home is locked up at a specifies time each day or night and also frees you up from carrying keys. Just a touch of a button on the ‘app’ or entering a 4-digit code on the lock itself, gets the job done. Easy – and if by chance you want to let someone in while you are away, you can do that and then lock it back up again when they are done.

INCREASED PEACE OF MIND AND INDEPENDENCE

One of the great benefits of an integrated smart home is that the various elements work together. Let’s say it’s bed time. You climb into bed and

there is a convenient button on the nightstand. You push that button and the following happens: All lights are turned off. All locks are locked up if by chance any were left unlocked. The thermostat is adjusted to the preferred nighttime temperature. A little light momentarily turns “green” to let you know it’s all secured for the night. A text message is sent to your loved one that reads “All secure at Mom’s place tonight”. No need to run around the house and turn everything off and lock up. One button does it all.

SCM: Smart devices are available online and in big box stores. Is there a benefit to using LiveSmart’s integrated system?

Gary: These individual systems are pretty good, but now you are opening up one app to control your thermostat; another for your lights and yet a third to lock the door. Our system does it all in a single app. Plus, with an integrator like us, you get someone who installs all this for you and understands how it works, so you don’t need an electrician for the lights, a locksmith for the lock and yet another specialist for the sprinkler control. With our services, you get the low price of ‘DIY,’ but with expert installation and tech support. Once you have the foundation, it’s easy to add things later as your budget and interests allow.

We are a small business and all our interactions are personal with me. I can be reached at (714) 505-1008 and gary@livesmarttech.com . Or visit www.livesmarttech.com

SPRING
LOOK SHARP

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956 Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery 22
How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

OLLI at UCI

Delivers Excellence in Lifelong Learning

For over a quarter of a century, The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of California, Irvine (OLLI at UCI) has been providing world-class education and social opportunities for mature adults throughout Orange County.

OLLI at UCI is a volunteer-based organization of adult learners – retired and semi-retired – who come together to discover, share, and build social connections with one another in a rich learning culture. Endowed by the Bernard Osher Foundation in 2006, OLLI at UCI offers a variety of thought-provoking short courses, taught by UCI professors and other respected experts, that explore subject areas like literature, history, science, and the arts. Members act as course facilitators, assist with administration, and volunteer their time to keep OLLI at UCI a vital and thriving part of the Orange County community.

“OLLI at UCI provides a rich learning environment for active adults who want to keep their minds enlightened and connect with like-minded individuals during retirement,” says Lonnie Horn, President of the OLLI at UCI Board of Directors and longtime OLLI member and volunteer. “Not only can you attend exceptional educational lectures, but you can also expand your social network by volunteering to help execute OLLI’s program and by joining special interest groups that explore topics like food, foreign languages, and film.”

Classes are offered in OLLI’s state-ofthe-art classroom at the Irvine Station

(a hybrid option is offered for most courses) and cover a wealth of subject areas, from literature and music to wellness, current events, and history. The instruction is first-rate, drawing from UCI faculty as well as retired instructors and local professionals who are experts in their fields. The annual membership fee of $235 (or $160 for one semester) gives unlimited access not only to current classes, but also a library of over 700 recorded lectures.

For more information about OLLI at UCI, visit www.ce.uci.edu/olli/

Long known as one of the best live acts in the business, BoDeans continue to tour year-round and continue to deliver amazing, high energy, performances. “I realized some time ago that the key to the BoDeans identity is the fans’ connection to our music-nowhere is that more evident or rewarding as when we come together-live. We love to connect with the fans who have supported us for so long and who have brought us so much inspiration.” said Kurt Neumann, the band’s founder and frontman, “We will continue to play as long as they continue to come out and sing along.”

Songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive today as they were in 1977.

Pop Up Picnic Co. returns to The Flower Fields for

PICNICS + FLOWERS

March 23 to May 12, 2024

Carlsbad’s upscale picnic company offers an elevated outdoors experience with curated bites, live music, and stunning views of The Flower Fields and San Diego coastline

Building on the success of last year’s event, PICNICS + FLOWERS is back and promises to be even bigger and better. Attendees can expect an elevated pop-up picnic featuring more shade structures, increased semi-private picnic spaces, reserved parking, a private entrance, complimentary wagon rides, an expanded menu, live music, and a family-fun zone featuring interactive games.

“We are excited to bring back PICNICS + FLOWERS for its second year with several exciting additions

to take this already idyllic setting to the next level,” says Lauren Kimmons, owner of Pop Up Picnic Co. “It’s a special experience for our guests to enjoy curated bites and sips in a stunning natural setting while enjoying live music and views of the Pacific Ocean off in the distance.”

The culinary offerings at this year’s event are set to delight attendees. Guests will receive an individual box containing a tasting menu with a variety of options to choose from, including Cucumber Chive sandwiches, Chickpea Smash

sandwiches, Ham and Tomato Sandwiches, three seasonal side salad choices, mini charcuterie, and delightful fruit pies on a stick for dessert. Refreshing beverages will accompany the delectable bites such as hibiscus-lemon aguas frescas and mint-infused water. Children will be served a child-friendly meal comprising cheese sandwiches, fruit, and dessert.

While the charming picnics have limited seating times of one hour (from 11 am to 2 pm , guests are encouraged to linger and explore The Flower Fields at their leisure and enjoy their complimentary wagon rides. Games at the tables add to the entertainment, allowing attendees to savor the experience with family and friends. For those bringing their children, a family-fun zone will be open for play.

Beetlejuice

April 16 - 28, 2024

Segerstrom Hall

He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-withthe-most is coming to Orange County.

It’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes.

With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it’s a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!

A game-changer for anyone seeking reliable and convenient nutrition during long-distance activities. As an avid cyclist, I’ve put this powder to the test on countless rides, and it has never failed to deliver. The simplicity of its design is genius: a blend of carbohydrates, electrolytes, and hydration in one easy-to-mix formula (think sustained energy without causing stomach discomfort or sugar crashes). Plus, the subtle flavor (including Mandarin Orange, Lemon, Berry) is refreshing without being overwhelming, making it easy to drink throughout even the toughest workouts. Puesto Anaheim

Award-winning cuisine defined by a creative fusion of flavors

Local cuisine reflects the people, art and culture of a city. Seeking to create truly memorable dining experiences, chefs around the world cull inspiration for everything from innovative flavors and the freshest of locally sourced ingredients to treasured family traditions handed down through the generations.

This is clearly the foundation for the popularity and success of each of Puesto's six Southern California locations (and likely growing).

First-generation Mexican Americans whose childhoods were immersed in authentic Mexi can cooking, Puesto's owners have created a vibrant destination dining experience de-

fined by its innovative take on traditional Mexican cuisine, a modern and inviting ambiance and high energy atmosphere.

Nestled in the heart of Anaheim on the grounds of The Westin Anaheim Resort (across from Disneyland), Puesto's design showcases fine craftsmanship of walnut, brass, steel and elegant lighting. Designed by Basile Studios, the lighting is itself artfrom the entry lights to the liquor shelving and suspended agave sculpture.

But where this eatery really shines is in the menu - from the trio of classic and inventive guacamole to its award-winning tacos.

For the former, think pomegranate, mango pico de gallo, chile de arbol and candied walnuts or classic gua-

Our favorites? The Baja fish (Puesto beer-battered fish, shredded cabbage, classic guacamole, Crema and morita salsa) and the Tamarindo Shrimp (think crispy Mexican shrimp and Tamarindo chile sauce). You can't go wrong with any of the choicesother popular picks include the filet mignon taco with crispy melted cheese, marinated filet mignon, avocado and spicy pistachio serrano salsa.

Also worth writing home about were the immensely flavorful short rib enchilada plates which combines chile braised short rib with guajillo pepper, Oaxacan style cheese, Mexican crema and avocado.

Beer aficionado? The specialty cervezas here are brewed in Puesto's own Mission Valley Cerveceria by Master Brewer Doug Hasker. More of a margarita fan? You'll have your work cut out for you in deciding between the signature Puesto Perfect (Pueblo Viejo reposado tequila, fresh lime and organic agave nectar), the spicy Serrano Margarita or the traditional Cadillac. Or sample one of the cucumber, guava, watermelon or coconut options.

Regardless of where the menu takes you, Puesto is definitely redefining the taco experience with its innovative approach to Mexican cuisine.

Finding Relief: HOW KETAMINE INFUSION

THERAPY OFFERS HOPE FOR CHRONIC PAIN

Living with chronic pain can be an isolating and exhausting experience, particularly when conventional treatments fail to provide adequate relief.

For individuals facing persistent pain after surgery or unresponsive to traditional medications, the prospect of finding effective relief may seem elusive. However, a promising solution is emerging in the form of ketamine infusion therapy, offering newfound hope and renewed vitality to those in need.

Chronic pain, defined as pain persisting beyond the normal time of healing, affects millions worldwide and presents a significant challenge to healthcare providers. Post-surgical pain, in particular, can become chronic in some patients, despite interventions aimed at managing it. Similarly, some individuals experience ongoing pain due to conditions such as fibromyalgia or neuropathy, where conventional treatments provide inadequate relief. In these cases, ketamine’s unique mechanism of action makes it a valuable therapeutic option. Unlike traditional analgesics that primarily target pain receptors, ketamine operates through various pathways within the central nervous system. Its ability to modulate glutamatergic neurotransmission, primarily through N-methyl-Daspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonism, plays a crucial role in its analgesic effects. By blocking these receptors, ketamine interrupts the amplification of pain signals, thereby diminishing the perception of pain.

Furthermore, ketamine exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, reducing inflammation-induced pain, which is particularly beneficial for conditions involving neuropathic pain or central sensitization. This multifaceted action distinguishes ketamine from conventional analgesics,

making it effective for a broader spectrum of chronic pain disorders.

In clinical settings, ketamine infusion therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for managing chronic pain resistant to other treatments. During infusion sessions, patients receive carefully titrated doses of ketamine intravenously, allowing for precise control of its effects. The duration and frequency of infusions vary depending on individual response and pain severity.

Research and clinical experience have demonstrated ketamine’s efficacy across diverse chronic pain conditions. Studies have shown significant reductions in pain scores and improvements in quality of life following ketamine infusion therapy. Moreover, the effects of ketamine can endure beyond the infusion period, providing prolonged relief for some patients. So rather than taking medications daily that are merely a bandaid for one’s symptoms, ketamine offers the potential for long term relief without needing daily medications.

One notable advantage of ketamine therapy is its rapid onset of action, with many patients experiencing pain relief within minutes to hours of the infusion. This rapid relief can be transformative for individuals suffering from debilitating pain, offering hope and restoring functionality. Additionally, ketamine’s favorable safety profile, particularly when administered by trained professionals in controlled settings, further supports its use in chronic pain management.

However, ketamine therapy is not without limitations and potential side effects.

Adverse effects such as temporary dissociation and changes in blood pressure and heart rate can occur, particularly at higher doses. Therefore, close monitoring and careful dose titration are essential to minimize risks and ensure patient safety.

Despite these considerations, ketamine represents a valuable addition to the armamentarium for chronic pain management, offering relief for patients who have exhausted other options. Its unique mechanism of action, rapid onset of action, and potential for prolonged benefit make it a compelling choice for individuals seeking relief from persistent pain.

In conclusion, ketamine infusion therapy holds promise for those suffering from chronic pain resistant to conventional treatments, including post-surgical pain and neuropathic conditions. By targeting multiple pathways involved in pain processing, ketamine offers effective relief and improves quality of life for many patients. As research continues to elucidate its mechanisms and refine therapeutic protocols, ketamine stands as a beacon of hope for those living with chronic pain.

Obtaining and Maintaining Medicare Creditable Drug Coverage

You need to enroll in a Medicare drug plan when you first become eligible for Medicare.

Even if you don’t take drugs now, you should consider joining a Medicare drug plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage to avoid a penalty. You may be able to find a plan that meets your needs with little to no monthly premiums. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can avoid paying the monthly premium for drug coverage by using one of the alternative prescription drug purchasing options that you can download the app to your phone and show the pharmacist the coupon code when you pick up your prescription, or purchase your prescriptions on one of those online formats. Don’t get me wrong. Certainly, use those if they get you your medications for less out of pocket than your Medicare drug plan will. However, use it in conjunction with your Medicare drug plan.

If you go 63 days or more in a row without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable prescription drug coverage, you most likely will have to pay a penalty if you sign up for Medicare drug coverage later.

The cost of the late enrollment penalty depends on how long you didn’t have creditable prescription drug coverage. Currently, the late enrollment penalty is calculated by multiplying 1% of the “national base premium” ($34.70 in 2024) by the number of full, uncovered months that you were eligible but didn’t enroll in Medicare drug coverage and went without other creditable prescription drug coverage. The “national base premium” may increase each year, meaning the penalty amount may also increase each year. After you enroll in Medicare drug coverage, the plan will tell you if you owe a penalty. If you do owe a penalty, that amount will be added to your monthly plan premium.

Massage for Your Teenager?

Bodywork Can Ease Adolescent Angst

While teens may be less likely than their parents to go to a massage therapist, there are plenty of reasons why this age group should be encouraged to give it a try.

The benefits of massage are well documented, among them relief of muscle tension, lowered stress hormones, increased sense of relaxation, improved immune function, and even a heightened ability to concentrate, according to studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. But for teenagers, there's an additional payback.

The teenage body is in the midst of transformation -- exponential growth and development in a rapid period of time. On the physical side, teens may be at increased risk for aches, pains, and injury. Many teens strain their bodies with competitive sports, get erratic sleep, and consume a less-than-optimal diet. Massage can help muscles recover from overuse,

and help balance the body and maintain that stability.

Perhaps even more crucial, teen massage can help improve body image and sleep patterns, and contribute to decreased depression, anxiety, and stress. This keeps a teen connected to her body, even as it morphs in confounding ways. "Many teens are self-conscious, and not happy with their bodies," says Eeris Kallil, massage therapist and shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy, in Colorado. "Massage can help teens stay grounded." Bodywork has also been

reported to help mediate eating disorders, a growing concern among teens.

Another potential plus: A beneficial, therapeutic relationship can develop between bodyworkers and teenagers during the years when adolescents need adult confidantes, but keep parents at a distance. The practitioner can become a supportive, trusted adult in a teen's life. And the session itself, according to Kallil, can be a way to deal with all the physical and emotional turmoil of this tender age.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong

places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)

Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever

leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply

look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Connect with Skip Myers and ReelTime by calling (949) 240-0555, stop by their beautiful new showroom at 26381 Via De Anza in San Juan Capistrano or visit www.reeltimeav.com

Healing Hearts

EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL

In writing this editorial, I recalled a friend once asking me to explain the premise of a book called “All Creatures Great and Small.”

It’s about giving veterinary care to animals like you’d give pediatric care to children in your community - with grace, and love, and an incredible amount of passion. James Herriot’s example was set long ago

through the tales of extraordinary and ordinary circumstance, but the level of service, specialization, and care lives on in clinics like Healing Hearts Emergency Animal Hospital in Laguna Hills.

Since opening its doors last August, the team of compassionate professionals here have provided the highest level of emergency medicine to dogs, cats, avian patients and even most exotics. Dr. Berschauer, the CEO and founding veterinarian behind Healing Hearts, strives to put together the best option for treatment for each patient on an individual level.

“We do this by working with each pet owner to determine what the optimal plan looks like for the care of your beloved pet,” says Stephanie Yun, office

manager. “With a fully equipped ICU, advanced monitoring systems, oxygen cage, full in-house lab, we’re ready to handle almost any emergency.”

In the rare instance that your pet needs treatment outside of Healing Hearts’ capabilities, they’ll help you coordinate the transfer and care to an outside facility. “We’re not kind or compassionate within our four walls alone - the nature of community is that it exists beyond our front door and we’re willing to go to any lengths to ensure your pet’s needs are met, wherever they end up.”

Dr. Berschauer and his staff’s warmth and dedication to caring for our furry (and sometimes not so furry) family members truly sets them apart. Each came from a different medical field, but their love of animals brought them to where they are today. Ensuring that we can bring back the “oldschool feel” of veterinary medicine “where your animal is assessed and treated from head-to-toe with stateof-the-art equipment” comes first. For all creatures, great and small.

Eight month old Sheldon is a quiet little guy who loves the simple things. A soft bed, a few toys, and sunny window to nap in are all he’s looking for in life. While Sheldon can be a tad shy at first meeting, he opens up quickly to show off his playful side. He would thrive in a relaxed home with another kitty to help show him the ropes.

Say hello to Maynard, a handsome boy who is ready to meet his new best friend. Only one year old, Maynard is full of happy energy and loves to run and play in the yard with the other lively pups. This blue-eyed charmer is a top notch snuggler and would make a wonderful companion in an active home where he can continue with his training.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions.

Q Should I pay attention to wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine ratings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine.

So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating. But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Q How long do wines stay good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right.

A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face.

In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking.

In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines. Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people.

In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

Obtaining and Maintaining Creditable Drug Coverage

You need to enroll in a Medicare drug plan when you first become eligible for Medicare.

The “national base premium” may increase each year, meaning the penalty amount may also increase each year. After you enroll in Medicare drug coverage, the plan will tell you if you owe a penalty. If you do owe a penalty, that amount will be added to your monthly plan premium.

Most Medicare drug plans (Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage) have their own list of what drugs are covered, called a formulary. Plans include both brand-name prescription drugs and generic drug coverage. The formulary includes at least 2 drugs in the most commonly prescribed categories. This helps make sure that people with different medi-

cal conditions can get the prescription drugs they need.

Medicare drug coverage typically places drugs into different levels, called “tiers,” on their formularies. Drugs in each tier have a different cost. For example, a drug in a lower tier will generally cost you less than a drug in a higher tier. In my experience, most Medicare drug coverage has 5 tiers: Tier 1- preferred generic; Tier 2- standard generic; Tier 3- preferred brand name; Tier 4- non-preferred brand name; Tier 5-Specialty Tier. The best way to find out what plan is best for you is to work with a broker who helps you create a Medicare.gov account where you can input your medications, pharmacy preference and then search for the lowest priced plan given your current medications. This is something you can do for yourself, but I find that my clients prefer me to help them get started with the process.

Stephanie Frisch is the owner of Insurance 101 and is an independent insurance broker dedicated to helping others make “educated decisions” about their insurance choices when it comes to Medicare. For answers to your questions, or no-fee consultation, call 949-292-4958.
