Blast From the Past A toast to the silver anniversary of Nfocus
When the first issue of Nfocus was published in November of 1993, founding editor Herbert Fox introduced to Nashville “a new kind of magazine.” A far cry from your mother’s Society Page, Nfocus was created with the intent of bringing bright, informative and entertaining reports from the front lines of Nashville’s social scene. The idea caught on quickly — an enthusiastic response that Herbert called “gratifying and a little amazing” — and it wasn’t long before readers were clamoring to get their hands on a copy every month. As the city has grown and changed, Nfocus has grown and changed alongside it, consistently broadening our coverage to include new parties, new causes, new faces and new businesses. The inaugural issue featured just nine events; today, you’re more likely to find 20 to 30 parties in an issue. There is more happening in Nashville now than ever before, and we’ve been there to chronicle it for a quarter of a century. While the social scene is our top priority, we’ve always featured the latest in fashion, arts and culture, food and wine, weddings, interior design, travel and more. Since day one, Nfocus has celebrated the very best that Nashville has to offer. Like any major milestone, our 25th anniversary has given us an opportunity to reflect on the past and all that we’ve experienced, documented and accomplished along the way. In 25 years, we’ve invited you to join us at over 7,000 events — vibrant, elegant, lively affairs that support a varied array of important causes and charities. It’s impossible to fully capture all of this magic in one issue, but we’re looking back on some of the dazzling highlights from our time in print. Join us as we revisit some of the best parties, the brightest luminaries and the biggest changes we’ve witnessed throughout the years. On the first anniversary of Nfocus, Herbert Fox wrote, “It’s been a year. It’s been a good year. It’s been a very good year, in fact. How time flies when you’re having fun.” The sentiment still applies today. It’s been a very good quarter century, and oh, what fun we’ve been having along the way!

he Swan Ball is the glamorous finale to Nashville’s extremely busy spring social season. By the time Nfocus first appeared on the Swan Lawn in 1994, the white-tie gala was an established, overwhelming success. These days, it continues to bring attention from national media, raise funds for Cheekwood Estate & Gardens and induce a bit of envy in friends who aren’t invited. Trust us, those invitations are still highly coveted. During its lifetime, the Swan Ball has taken us many places. We’ve invited readers to join us for an elegant evening in Morocco and to travel back in time to the Renaissance era and most recently to the Art Deco age. Some years the ball stays closer to home. Now and again the ball chairs find inspiration in what Cheekwood is famous for — its extraordinarily landscapes — and bring the outside in to create the ultimate garden party. In addition to chronicling the décor and the fashions year after year, we’ve recounted amazing performances from legends Tony Bennett and Donna Summer, divas Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin and the much more (literally) approachable Reba. Many consider the Swan Ball a glittering society affair — and indeed it is! But for the army of volunteers who work on the massive undertaking, it is a fundraiser first. As a result, Cheekwood is the beneficiary of millions of dollars thanks to their effort. At 56, the Swan Ball remains one of the premier charity events in the nation, and like the more fortunate among us, it still looks good. continued on page 30

T
he Ballet Ball has been an evening of elegance and magic since we first jetéd into the ballroom of the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in March 1994. Then called the Masked Ball, attendees circulated through the party hidden behind elaborate feathered and sequined facades. The craft-challenged and less creative relied on designers including Manuel and Alfred Fiandaca to cloak their appearance. Some years, the getups were more elaborate than others, and sometimes they took a comic turn with painted-on Preds masks and likenesses of dead celebrities. In 2005, with a name change and new logo, the event became the one we know today. The masks were gone, yet the enthusiasm remained the same. Themes became more contemporary when über-talented Artistic Director Paul Vasterling looked closer to home for inspiration. His original choreography — set to live concerts from local stars like Ben Folds and the Fisk Jubilee Singers — was mesmerizing. The resulting performances were a sophisticated and stirring celebration of Nashville’s diverse artistic communities. To match the provocative productions, the company adapted quickly from wearing romantic tutus to jaw-dropping creations by Billy Ditty, the ballet’s costume master. It’s no surprise that the Ballet Ball, which benefits the Nashville Ballet’s community engagement programs, ranks high in our annual Best Parties polls, and in 2017 it received Best Charity Event in our sister publication Nashville Scene’s Best of Nashville. From balletomanes to those who don’t know a frappé from a Frappuccino, the Ballet Ball brings together unexpected collaborations to celebrate the rich history and diversity of our city’s music scene.

Glam Gala Symphony Ball remains a winter wonder
T
he Symphony Ball brings the fall party season to a climactic and marvelous close. Held in December, the white-tie gala gives Nashville’s beau monde one last hurrah before holiday madness goes into full swing. It’s also the perfect opportunity for A-list ladies to drape themselves in designer gowns and furs no matter what the thermometer reads. The ball has taken us around the world in the 25 years we’ve recounted it. We spent romantic evenings in Old Russia, Vienna and Hong Kong, but domestic locales were equally dramatic. Among several galas inspired by New York, it’s the exquisite recreation of Truman Capote’s legendary Black and White Ball at the famed Plaza Hotel that we remember most fondly. Harmony Award winners have been as varied as the backdrops. We’ve been fortunate to watch past recipients Dolly Parton, Vince Gill and Keith Urban sing, but being a country entertainer is not a requirement of receiving the honor. Lyle Lovett, Béla Fleck and part-time Nashville resident Steven Tyler have also taken home the prize. No matter who is onstage, attendees experience a top-notch performance because the “backup band” — the talented symphony — has proven time and again the range of its abilities. In spite of some ups and downs, our world-class Nashville Symphony continues to inspire, educate and entertain us with excellent musical performances and adds another dimension to Music City by delivering a broad range of classical, pop and jazz from its home, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

unday in the Park, the first event to appear in our November 1993 inaugural issue, holds a special place in our hearts. For the supporters of Friends of Warner Parks, the beloved al fresco luncheon announces the official arrival of fall while raising valuable funds for Percy and Edwin Warner Parks. The upscale picnic feels more like a family reunion than a fundraiser. Perhaps it’s because attendees rub elbows with Basses, Warners, Whites and a drove of descendants of the parks’ namesakes and Luke Lea, who donated the initial land to the city. More often than not, Mother Nature provides a perfect day, but whether it’s sunny and scorching or cold and foggy, this A-list crowd exchanges cocktail dresses and black-tie attire for the latest fall fashions — cashmere, tweeds, wraps and hats. Upon arriving at Ridge Field, they make their way to the bustling bar and indulge in mimosas and bloody marys before enjoying an al fresco lunch in the casually elegant setting. An eloquent invocation from Becca Stevens has become as much a part of the tradition as hearing the next move the Friends are taking to preserve and protect the parks’ more than 3,100 acres. Sunday in the Park is much more than an excellent excuse for day-drinking. With proceeds from the country chic affair, Friends of Warner Parks has invested more than $30 million to restore and renovate the sandstone gates at Belle Meade Boulevard, The Allée, picnic shelters and more for the enjoyment of 1 million people each year, for generations to come.

Tennessee’s First SMILE New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.
The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIYT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). “We are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure,” said Dr. Wang. Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. LASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This
helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE. One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Café, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville”, among others. Ms. Coleman has had poor eyesight all of her life, legal blind in both eyes without correction. Ms. Coleman’s 3D Laser SMILE procedure went beautifully and she is thrilled to have her crystal clear new vision and newly gained independence on glasses or contacts and being one of the first patients in the state to receive SMILE!
Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. egardless of the forecast, nothing seems to dampen the spirits of the thousands who attend the Iroquois Steeplechase — at least as long as Nfocus has chronicled the day. Nashville’s “rite of spring” is the perfect combination of sports, society and philanthropy, and it appeals to horse enthusiasts, fashion buffs and social butterflies alike. Generosity rules the day as boxholders offer passersby Champagne, mint juleps, tenderloin biscuits, cheese straws and the occasional cigar. The Paddock Club and Iroquois Society open early and remain packed all day whether guests are seeking a break from the weather or another Jack Daniel’s cocktail. In boxes held for decades, race founders, owners and trainers celebrate with children and grandchildren. The children’s Stick Horse Race and Parade of Hounds are perennial favorite distractions, and beginning in 2003, our annual Nfocus Hat Contest added even more fun to the day. Its popularity grew quickly, and competition was fierce as ladies — and men — vied for our judges’ attention. Categories were added and improvised as nominees went above and beyond with flowers, frills and follies. While it may seem like the show is in the grandstands, no one forgets that the horses are the real spectacle — nor do they forget that Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is the main beneficiary due to the foresight and effort of Alice and Henry Hooker. Since we first covered it in 1994, the Steeplechase has been a beloved sporting event, drawing more than 25,000 attendees each year and raising more than $10 million for the hospital. continued on page 64

Growing Up How Nashville and Nfocus have changed since 1993
A lot has happened since the first issue of Nfocus hit stands in the fall of 1993, both in the pages of our magazine and in the city at large. At 32 pages, our inaugural issue was just a quarter of the size of the magazine currently in your hands, and it included coverage of nine parties. We’ve gotten bigger, glossier and more colorful as the years have gone by, but our mission to cover Nashville’s social scene and philanthropic causes has remained the same. And while we’ve grown and changed, so has the city of Nashville. In 1993, downtown Nashville had no Frist Art Museum, Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Country Music Hall of Fame, Bridgestone Arena or Music City Center. The Ryman was undergoing a massive renovation, and the beloved “Batman Building” was under construction. Dearly Departed Remembering those we’ve loved and lost
The past 25 years have been filled with lavish parties and celebrations marked by fun, glamour and generosity, but it’s impossible to reflect on these two and half decades without feeling a wave of heartache and grief for those we’ve lost along the way. We couldn’t possibly find the pages or the words to honor everyone we’ve loved and lost, but we pay tribute to a select few that played an important role in our Nfocus family. Join us in remembering those who graced our earliest pages, who were the constant fixtures on the social scene, who served as cover girls (and guys) and were named Players by our early editorial staff. We loved them; we miss them, and we honor their memory. by Beth Alexander, John Bridges and Nan Parrish
Herbert Fox Herbert was brave, even daring, when he came up with the idea for Nfocus. He was antsy, though, about the idea of the magazine because he was inventing it out of whole cloth. Suzy Knickerbocker had been doing the same thing for years, most recently in W, but Suzy lived in a big city. There were a lot more faces at the parties in New York. Nashville was small change. Herbert knew he’d be running shots of the same people — his very good friends — every month. But he figured, why not? Herbert needed the money. He’d been around the world, in planes during the Korean War. After that, he’d spent time in New York, doing PR for a major fashion company — so major was the money that Herbert bought a château in Loire and restored it. Then there was no more. So he came home to Nashville, where he became head writer for Hee Haw. Then that ended too. Herbert’s family never had “money,” but he was always included in whitetie dances, just for teens, at the Belle Meade Club in the 1940s. He had charm by the ounce, but he also had a sharp eye, watching all the while — watching closely, watching exquisitely. When he called on his long-term lady friends to help get Nfocus up and running, they said “yes.” They had no reason to be afraid. They knew Herbert’s love would be on the pages. He proved them right.

Eric England For 24 of Nfocus’ 25 years, Eric England has been as permanent a fixture on the social scene as Champagne flutes and mini BLTs. The ladies are drawn to him like a magnet — perhaps it’s that his Nikon camera provides a chance to appear in the pages of our publication, but we have a feeling it has more to do with his handlebar mustache, motorcycle jacket, and a certain air of “danger and mystery” we so often hear whispers of at parties. So we figured, for our 25th anniversary issue, we’d turn the tables and put our stalwart photographer in front of the camera for once and shed a little light on this man of intrigue, a motorcycle-racing father who still has a darkroom in his basement. We sat down and had a little chat with our friend and co-worker about his time at Nfocus, his life in Nashville and some of his favorite things — and even discovered a few surprising details ourselves! photograph by Daniel Meigs What is your favorite Nfocus cover? The Holly Williams cover [in August 2014]. She was actually pregnant at the time but barely showing. It was black and white, which I like, natural light, simple. It was just really pretty. What’s the most technically challenging Nfocus cover you’ve shot? We did one in August 2006 that was a fold-out cover, and we shot it with the subjects sitting on a fence. We used the fence to line the shot up so that photos could be pieced together in post-production. And the light kept changing and changing, so it was kind of a nightmare, but it ended up looking OK. We did that a couple times for photos that were fold-outs. What’s your favorite shoot you’ve done for Nfocus? Steeplechase is always fun. Swan Ball is always pretty fun. It’s just interesting to watch the people change throughout the day, the more they get liquored up. Especially since I’m not drinking now, it’s more noticeable. What is your favorite event to cover and why? It would have to be one of those two [Steeplechase or Swan Ball]. The first one I ever did with Herbert [Fox], it was a women’s shooting match that we use to cover years ago. That was really fun because it was skeet shooting and these older ladies — one was named Shocky P’Poole. I remember she let me shoot her gun, which was really nice. That one was really fun, but we haven’t [covered] it in years. When did you get your first camera? Probably when I was 8. My dad was a photographer, so I was around it, but then he gave me a little 110 [camera] that I ended up using to shoot my own photos, and he helped me develop it in the darkroom while he was doing his own film. Who would you like to see perform at Swan Ball? I would like to see an older heavy rock act play at Swan Ball. I feel like the age is getting to where it’s not just the Tony Bennett crowd anymore. It could have some heavier rock. Maybe like Foghat. I mean, “Slow Ride” at Swan Ball would be pretty awesome.

What was your best celebrity encounter? Definitely Jerry Lewis. I did that for a Scene cover, and he was amazing and did his whole kind of shtick and said, “Mr. England, I’m done,” and thanked me for being on time and fast and not taking any more of his time, and told me I was a real professional. And that was fun. Because I grew up watching him on TV and the Jerry Lewis telethons. What’s changed the most since you started working at Nfocus? Really, going from film to digital has been the biggest change because I used to shoot film, process all my own film. I use to make small 4-by-5 prints of each subject at a party, and then I would pick the best one and then number them, and then they would be identified that way, and they would be black and white for the most part, except for covers, which were color. What was your coolest/most surreal moment on the job? The dynamic personalities and the social circles that sort of clash and the way they intermingle yet are always sort of nice. There’s surface tension, and then there’s a current underneath that’s fairly interesting. What are some things about yourself that most of our readers don’t know and would find interesting? I love to read manuals. That’s what I mostly buy book-wise, manuals for things, sometimes things I don’t even own, sometimes kind of a wish list of things I want to own — cars, motorcycles, whatever. So that’s the kind of stuff I like to read, howto stuff, especially older stuff. I have a lot of manuals for stuff I don’t have that I enjoy reading because I just like to see how it works and see how people did stuff.

Daniel Meigs Daniel Meigs joined the Nfocus staff just two years ago, but it’s hard to remember a time when he wasn’t an integral part of our team. From wrangling Jack Hanna with a penguin to elegantly posing the ever-so-lovely Kelsea Ballerini and Zac Posen, Daniel has photographed some of our most striking covers, and his positive attitude and relaxed demeanor bring a certain je ne sais quoi to every shoot and party. He may be a newer face on the social scene, but it feels like he’s been part of our family forever. We chatted with him recently about his time at Nfocus, his start in photography and some of his favorite haunts in Nashville in hopes of giving you a chance to see the world through his lens.

What is your favorite Nfocus cover? The Zac Posen and Kelsea Ballerini cover for our Symphony Fashion Show issue [May 2017]. I remember being beyond excited to photograph them — like for weeks beforehand. The day before, I came down with a fever. I never get sick. I was so weak I needed help lifting equipment, and I just felt terrible. We didn’t think the set was going to work at first, but after some test shots, I had this little burst of energy, and everything fell into place. Zac and Kelsea were incredible. They brought so much life, and I just sat back and captured them doing their thing. I’ll never forget it. What’s the most technically challenging Nfocus cover you’ve shot? Probably July’s Gatsby-esque Swan Ball co-chair cover [with Beth Alexander and Patti Smallwood]. We had a lot of things going at once, and I’m sure I looked pretty ridiculous running around Cheekwood setting everything up. You may have to wait on the talent, but if you can help it, the talent should never wait on you. What’s your favorite shoot you’ve done for Nfocus? I really enjoyed getting to photograph ballerinas with the Nashville Ballet this year. It’s so incredible to see them move with such precision and grace. What is your favorite event to cover and why? Symphony Fashion Show has got to be one of my favorites. Everyone is dressed to the nines, but in a different way. People take risks with their wardrobe choices, and it’s the best event for people watching. What’s your favorite part about your job? Getting to work with the Nfocus team. I’m amazed at how well we all mesh together, and I’m always telling friends how lucky I am to have a work family like this.
The hardest part about your job? Occasionally I end up having to photograph someone who just doesn’t want to be photographed, and that’s tough. But I’m always up for a challenge. What’s your favorite venue in town? I really love the way Frist Art Museum is done up for the Frist Gala, especially this year. The outside area under the tent was so beautiful. What was your funniest/craziest/most entertaining moment at an event? Seeing all the costumes at Anything Goes at Cheekwood this year. Holly [Hoffman] and I were entertained the entire time just looking at what people wore. Someone dressed as Beetlejuice and was screen-ready! What was your coolest/most surreal moment on the job? Spending almost a week in Alys Beach covering beach homes with the Nfocus team. I remember thinking, “I can’t believe this is my job,” every day of that trip. Who would you like to see perform at Swan Ball? Leon Bridges, hands down What was your best celebrity encounter? This happened years ago when working as an assistant on a Vogue cover shoot. I was getting breakfast at the craft service table, and I bumped into Reese Witherspoon. I didn’t recognize her at first, and she was an absolute sweetheart. A lot of people on that level won’t bother to talk to assistants or behindthe-scenes people. What is your best job perk? Meeting so many inspiring people in this town What are some things about yourself that most of our readers don’t know and would find interesting? I’ve run a marathon, and I traveled to six continents before I was 24.

Tiramisu is my madeleine, a small confection that serves a banquet of nostalgia. But it’s not so much the boozy hit of cream and coffee that evokes memories of Nashville past; it’s the recipe itself — or maybe I should say the lack thereof. I first heard of tiramisu a little more than 25 years ago, when Nashville was a very different city. I was whiling away summer vacation with two high school friends, one of whom had just returned from Epcot with her college boyfriend. Keep in mind, Epcot was only about a decade old then, so it made for a rather dazzling date. As she narrated her romantic getaway, one detail stood out: tiramisu, an exotic dessert made with ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, coffee and liqueur. We listened intently, enthralled as much by a dessert whose Italian name translated to “pick me up” as by the fledgling romance. As luck would have it, her big-city boyfriend was coming to visit her in Nashville, so we decided he must be fêted with a homemade tiramisu. The problem was we had no idea how to make one. There was no internet to search, and the Joy of Cooking and The Silver Palate Cookbook in our mothers’ 20th-century kitchens were decidedly tiramisu-free. There was no Coco’s Italian Market or Kalamatas. Heck, there wasn’t even an Olive Garden or a Maggiano’s in Nashville. The Old Spaghetti Factory served spumoni. Fortunately, my mom had recently read about tiramisu, and she had an idea. “Call Mario,” she said. If anyone in Nashville would have a tiramisu recipe, it would be him. We looked up Mario’s Ristorante in the phone book, dialed, and someone answered the phone. (Remember when restaurants answered phones?) We explained our situation. The voice on the phone hollered to the kitchen. The kitchen hollered back. The voice on the phone told us to come get Chef ’s recipe. We wrapped our beach towels around ourselves, slapped flip-flops on our feet and zipped through Hillsboro Village in a lemon-yellow Cadillac at rush hour. Mario’s Ristorante occupied a European-inspired house on the banks of Broadway at the current site of the Aertson Hotel, Nada and Henley restaurants, and the already erstwhile
Caviar & Bananas. We parked on the street near the now-departed Wild Boar restaurant and entered Mario’s dining room, where servers were setting tables for dinner. If memory serves, Chef arrived shortly in houndstooth trousers and a white coat. He was smoking. While servers polished wine stems all around us, Chef listened to our tale of hometown woe, about the cosmopolitan boyfriend coming to visit our tiramisu-free backwater. “So, you want to know how to make the tiramisu,” Chef said, with a gravelly voice and an accent that rang of Italy or France or just somewhere outside our drawling Dogpatch. “Yes, we want to make the tiramisu,” we nodded in reverent unison. He gazed toward the heavens, as if the divine recipe for tiramisu existed in the restaurant ceiling. “I tell you what you’re gonna need,” he said. We leaned closer, pencils and recipe cards ready. All we needed to ensure true love was the formula for a perfect tiramisu. Our friend’s romantic life was in Chef ’s hands. Mario’s chef was our Ursula the sea witch. Chef nodded, then shrugged, then cocked his head, as if he were tasting the words of the recipe for seasoning. At last, he spoke. “You’re going to need some espresso.” Espresso. We scribbled frantically. Got it. “You’re going to need ladyfingers.” Ladyfingers. Check. “You’re going to need about 90 egg yolks.” OK, fine, maybe he didn’t really say 90 egg yolks. Maybe he just said 64 or 48 or 30. I don’t remember, but I do remember that whatever number of eggs Chef was accustomed to cracking to prepare tiramisu for a dining room full Nashville’s elite was nothing short of absurd. You might even say it was as preposterous as the idea that once upon a time you could call a chef on a landline, zip down 21st Avenue at rush hour, park on the street and borrow a recipe from the fanciest restaurant in town. But that’s exactly what we did. And, with the help of some complex fractions, that recipe worked. The boyfriend was dazzled — temporarily, at least. I haven’t heard boo about him since. He’s gone — gone like Mario’s Ristorante, gone like lazy summers in a sleepy hometown. But like the creamy coffeetinged layers of a tiramisu, the memory of that bygone Nashville is a sweet pickme-up, indeed. by CarringTon Fox

Fashion is ever-evolving, and the styles that we fawned over in 1993 are quite different from todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s must-have pieces. Founding editor herbert Fox led Nfocus through 2001, creating a voice for the socials, A-listers who attend pay parties. A mashup of Francophilia and an Old Nashville perspective infused every word he wrote. Like Hirschfeld caricatures, his write-ups were a few judicious lines in giving readers a sense of the spirit of each party. A lot has changed since his death in 2005. You could still do without a cellphone then, and Herbert did. The shorthand of emojis wouldn’t have been for him. Using an image meant you couldn’t use words. He would find a digital spree of clapping hands, a gleaming sun and a kissblowing circle incomprehensible. He would likewise be baffled by political correctness, which forbids the use of some of the terms in the first paragraph above. For him, there were A-listers, newcomers and CYTs in LBDs. (You know who you are.) He found food trends ironic and would no doubt skewer the ubiquitous burrata salad. A massive lump of soft cheese with tomatoes and a bit of basil? Wasn’t that called a caprese salad just last month? Does anyone need that much cheese? The erosion of language would also bother Herbert. “Have a good rest of the day” would set his teeth on edge. Is a simple “have a nice day” ever appropriate? Or is it only proper at midnight as one day flips to the next? On Jan. 2, should we say, “Have a good rest of the year”? That entire discussion is probably pointless since Herbert never said anything as pedestrian as “have a nice day.” But if he did, it would be followed by an eye-roll emoji. He’d be appalled by the intrusive nature of the internet of things,
whatever that is. Google any item and it follows you around until you buy it — or it leaps into your cellphone. The notion that digital technology can peg your vitals is less alarming than its ability to identify what restaurants you frequent, your literary tastes, where you vacation and which diseases you’re afraid of contracting. He’d find Facebook and Instagram narcissistic, feeling that friendship is something precious that develops over decades, not with the click of a mouse. Herbert loved a beautiful invitation and, in fact, saved them all during his tenure at the magazine; there were two large trash bags full of them, which were discovered in his apartment post-mortem. He’d consider the Evite to be the scourge of the right sort of party. One of the offensive aspects is the ability to see who’s invited — and their reply, which, horrifyingly, can include a “maybe.” “Maybe” I’ll come if the crowd shapes up to be sufficiently attractive? Or if some of the other invitees who are still on the fence decide to come after all? Or if my nemesis decides to stay home, then I’m in for sure? If the hosts really want me to be there, he would think, they’ll put a stamp on an invitation and I’ll respond. While he bemoaned our city’s inability to reply promptly, I don’t think he’d approve of this particular shortcut. Somewhere he is sharing a drink with his friends Tupper Saussy, Teenie Buchtel, Alyne Massey and other beloved characters. They’re discussing past Swan Balls and who wore what and said what else while Tupper tickles the heavenly ivories. Now, that’s a party I hope to attend.
