Letters A LETTER FROM LOU KENNEDY South Carolina is on fire! Great corporate citizens—from Volvo to Samsung—that call South Carolina home are expanding, sparking a new era of unprecedented growth across our state. Unemployment is down and investment is up. The business community is excited about the future. We know we have to keep working hard to build on South Carolina’s momentum. That means working with students, lawmakers, and educators to reform education in South Carolina. As future members of the workforce, students benefit when they are offered apprenticeships, internships, and workforce training opportunities that equip them with skills to prepare them to compete for the kinds of jobs we have available right here in South Carolina. That is why we welcome students—and educators—through our company, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, every week. In addition to reforming education and strengthening our workforce, there is no question that the South Carolina tax code needs to be restructured to make it more competitive, less burdensome, and more equitable for job creators and families. It is time for comprehensive tax reform in South Carolina that overhauls our broken tax structure, including the unfair property tax system, and we are ready to partner with stakeholders from across the state to get it done. Tax reform is going to make South Carolina more competitive, and it is going to create jobs, and that is a win for families and businesses. Reforming public education and passing comprehensive tax reform are two key components of continued economic growth in South Carolina. Achieving both of these are wins for everyone across the state.

Lou Kennedy CEO & President, Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation Chair, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce

Workforce & Jobs Report

Letters A LETTER FROM TED PITTS South Carolina businesses are doing well; the economy

is strong, unemployment remains near all-time lows, company sales are up, wages are increasing for workers, and companies continue to expand in the Palmetto State. So, what keeps business owners and CEO’s up at night? The need for a skilled workforce. Over the last two decades, the Chamber and the business community have taken an active role in working with policymakers on solutions to fill employer’s workforce needs: whether through the creation of apprenticeship programs like Apprenticeship Carolina™, the creation of the Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) Coordinating Council or requiring government agencies to coordinate their workforce development efforts through the Coordinating Council for Workforce Development (CCWD). We will continue to seek solutions that help solve the workforce development problem. Enclosed in this report are statewide employment and wage data that we hope you find helpful. The data breaks down the number of businesses involved in each sector and subsector and the number of people employed, the average weekly wage, and ten-year projected growth in each of those sectors and subsectors. It also separates the data by region, so businesses have access to more accurate workforce statistics in their specific area of the state. We want to thank the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce for partnering with us to provide the data in this report and hope that you find it informative. The Chamber continues to work to make South Carolina the best place in the nation to live, work and do business.

Ted Pitts President & CEO, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce
