Plan to Reduce Transit Issues in South Boston
Culmination of two years of advocacy results in $11 million in funding to improve transportation efficiency, reduce congestion without new taxes or fees State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and State Representative Nick Collins announced a comprehensive transportation plan to improve public transit while reducing congestion. Building off the progress made in the South Boston Waterfront Sustainable Transportation Plan, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins spent the last two years pushing officials from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to continue working on transit issues in South Boston.

As part of that effort, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins urged the MBTA and MassDOT throughout 2016 to include South Boston in its Capital Investment Plan for FY17FY21. As a result of their advocacy, approximately $11 million has been earmarked for transportation needs in South Boston. The Capital Investment Plan includes: $9.7 million for the Cypher Street extension from D Street to E Street and reconstruction of E Street to extend from Cypher Street to Summer Street; $700,000 to study Kosciuszko Circle; $500,000 to plan, design and construct parallel parking along Columbia Road from I Street to Preble Circle; $135,000 to upgrade the traffic signal at the intersection of I Street and Day Boulevard; and $100,000 to facilitate transpor-
Youth Ambassadors Hit the Streets!
As part of their community service efforts, the South Boston Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors spent time two weeks ago cleaning the streets in the West Broadway business district. For many years, the Youth Ambassadors have been concerned about the amount of litter they see on the streets. Litter has a negative effect on both the environment and the health of South Boston residents. The Youth Ambassadors are committed to making a difference in their community and know that eliminating litter is a great way to show they care. Youth Ambassadors is a youth development program at the South Boston Community Health Center for youth ages 12-18 that engages teens in activities focused on community service, teen health, substance abuse prevention and art-based initiatives.

Basically, we want to encourage you to take part in the 2016 election, so that you yourself get to the polls on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8. Note that all polls must be open at least from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Many polls will have longer hours. Note also that (for the first time) the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will allow early voting. The early voting period begin this coming Monday, October 24, and ends on Friday, November 4. More information on early voting is available at www.MassEarlyVote.com. South Boston Online intends to publish articles on various candidates who have connections to South Boston. In this editorial, we are encouraging you to vote, because there four important ballot questions. Certainly, it is important to vote for the candidates of your choice. It is just as important for you to study the ballot questions carefully, and then cast an informed vote for or against each one. We will list each question, along with short reasons for or against them, which we have condensed from the “Information for Voters” booklet shown above.
Expanded Slot-Machine Gaming FOR: Voting YES allows one additional slot parlor in Massachusetts, to be built only in a community that votes for it. It will add tens of millions of dollars to state revenues (the existing slot parlor garners $60 million in new state revenues). It will also preserve many jobs. AGAINST: The existing slot parlor is performing well below budget, and there is a possibility that the state (and New England) plans more gambling outlets than the market for gambling will support. This ballot question is an initiative petition that needs far more research. QUESTION TWO: Charter School Expansion FOR: Twelve new charter schools will be allowed each year. Charters are really public schools open to all, which have a proven record of better achievement. Funding of individual districts is not affected by additional charter schools; over 30,000 students are now on charter waiting lists. AGAINST: Charter schools will take away $400 million from Massachusetts public schools, while educating only 4% of students in

QUESTION THREE: Conditions for Farm Animals South Boston is an urban community, so we’ll condense this one. Simply stated, this question requires that hens or livestock not be confined, and be given room to move around. Those in favor claim that it is cruel to coop farm animals up. Those against claim this law will cause basic food (eggs meat, milk) to cost more, and will add another bureaucratic layer to the state’s small farms. QUESTION FOUR: Legalization, Regulation, and Taxation of Marijuana FOR:

ment officials believe a regulated marijuana (MJ) market is better than the criminal gangs that now sell it. Taxing legal MJ will generate $100 million more state and local funds; Massachusetts can learn from Colorado, Washington, Alaska, and Oregon’s working MJ systems. AGAINST: Legalizing MJ creates a billion-dollar industry that will harm the health and safety of all residents, including those under 21. It allows “home growers” (without neighborhood approval) and the use of MJ in soda, candy, and baked goods. It ignores MJ’s impact on increased use of stronger drugs. Your vote on these four questions counts, so vote carefully. But most important, please VOTE. See you at the polls. Thank you.

Beacon of Hope Awards to Donna Bohan, Pam Cornell by Rick Winterson
One of our most anticipated “Southie Times” is the annual Comedy Night Fundraiser, which benefits the South Boston Collaborative Center. This year, the Comedy Night takes place in that favorite South Boston gathering place, Florian Hall, on Friday evening, November 4. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. The evening will feature music, two comedians, light refreshments, a cash bar, and some terrific raffle prizes. A high point of the evening will be conferring two Darlene Sheehan “Beacon of Hope” Awards. The 2016 Awardees are Donna Bohan and Pam Cornell, whose efforts in supporting the recovery programs at the Collaborative Center and elsewhere are well known. Danna Bohan was born and brought up in South Boston – a member of the Lynch family headed by the much-loved Anne and Francis
(“Pops”) Lynch. Donna, her husband Michael, and their 17-year-old son Thomas live on Emerson Street. Donna’s hard-working involvement in diverse community affairs and charities is legendary. This includes IBEW Local 2222 charities (Families First, the Benevolent Fund), past volunteering at the Gate of Heaven School, Massachusetts Fallen Heroes, the South Boston Community Health Center, and the American Heroes Hockey Challenge, which obtains prosthetic limbs for veterans. She also campaigns for Mayor Walsh and her brother, Congressman Stephen Lynch. Perhaps her devoted work on the biennial “Open Hearts, Open Homes” gala for the Gavin Foundation’s recovery programs is the key reason Donna will receive the 2016 Darlene Sheehan “Beacon of Hope” Award. Pam Cornell was brought up in a single-parent family by her mother
Kathleen. Pam was one of five Cornell children raised by Kathleen, who was originally from Ireland and worked nights as a waitress. “We could not have grown up without her,” Pam says. Pam herself has enjoyed 34 years of successful sobriety. She met Darlene Sheehan while engaging in holistic medicine; they became firm friends, and like Darlene, Pam “never gives up on other people”. Andy Ward, the Director of the Collaborative Center, describes her as follows, “(Pam) represents those qualities for which this award is named – quietly, consistently, an ever-hopeful presence for the possibilities of positive change for others. The Collaborative Center Board is fortunate and honored to recognize such an individual.” A few words about Darlene Sheehan: Darlene served as the Founding Director of the Collaborative during South Boston’s drug/suicide crisis in the mid-1990s. A few years before,
she had contracted a virulent form of cancer, which had gone into remission. After her intense and stressful early efforts to get the Collaborative up and running, her cancer returned – fatally so. Many of Darlene’s friends and colleagues thought the two incidents were related. Whatever the case, Darlene is remembered by everyone who knew her as a true angel – halo, wings, shining spirit, and all As for this year’s Comedy Night, Andy Ward mentions music by Dennis Taylor to open the evening, followed by returning comedians Christine Hurley and Artie Januario. The raffle prizes include gym memberships, coveted tickets to the Bruins and Celtics, and a weekend getaway on Cape Ann. And the Darlene Sheehan “Beacon of Hope” Awards program will be highly meaningful as well as blessedly brief. Don’t miss it! See you there!

Mass of Thanksgiving in March, 1966 to take charge of the new parish. Cardinal Cushing named the parish in honor of the patron saint of his boyhood parish in the city point section of South Boston. Set off as an independent parish in 1908, St. Eulalia Church, on the site of the present SB Catholic Academy, was destroyed in a fire in 1933 and quickly replaced by the present St. Brigid Church.

The sessions will be held on Monday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. All painting materials will be supplied. The youngsters will be painting in water-based paint led by renowned watercolorist Dan McCole and other artists from the South Boston Arts Association. Classes are offered at no cost to youth ages seven to twelve with
funding provided by the South Boston Neighborhood Development Foundation, Gillette Great Starts grant, artists from the South Boston Arts Association and space generously donated to the community by St. Peter Academy.

34th Annual Halloween Celebration at Castle Island The Castle Island Association is holding its 34th Halloween celebration at Fort Independence on Castle Island this Saturday and Sunday, October 22 & 23, 2016, between 12:00 and 4:00 PM, weather permitting. Currently underway is an examination of South Boston bus systems by MassDOT and the MBTA. As part of that conversation, Rep. Collins and Sen. Forry have advocated for a series of short-term and long-term fixes to improve service in South Boston. Short-term proposals include: Revitalizing the City Point Bus Terminal on East First Street to accommodate passenger platforms and other amenities; and A review current bus routes for inclusion of express routes. A public meeting will be held later this month to discuss MBTA route improvements. However, cognizant that some of the long-term transportation needs in South Boston and throughout Massachusetts require substantial

“South Boston on Parade” Debuts rick, Henry Knox, George Washington, and Evacuation Day. The second historical bit is the dedication of “South Boston on Parade” to the indomitable, muchmissed John “Wacko” Hurley of fond recent memory. Wacko and his wife Molly were pillars, heart and soul, of the Parade for two generations – read all about it in Paul’s book.
You have heard many of the facts, figures, and statistics describing our annual South Boston Evacuation Day/St. Patrick’s Day Parade. More about that in a moment. Right now, South Boston Online would like to announce the debut of Paul Christian’s new book, which he has entitled “South Boston on Parade – a History of South Boston’s Evacuation Day and Saint Patrick’s Day Parade” “South Boston on Parade” is a book of photographs. They are all black and white photos, which give a serious, scholarly feel to Paul’s book, while still letting his creation be both highly informative and hugely entertaining. “South Boston on Parade” is truly a visual treat. After looking at the hundreds of photos, be sure to take the time to read (carefully) the well-written prose sections and the numerous tables that list the Parade’s many events, happenings, and metamorphoses over more than a full century – an interval that spans the 125th Anniversary of the original 1776 Bostonian Evacuation Day on March 17 in 1901, to the closing photos of the Cycling Murrays, a Ghostbuster, and the traditional Local 7 Ironworkers float taking part in the 2015 Parade. Over the years, South Boston’s Evacuation Day/St. Patrick’s Day Parade has become (perhaps) America’s largest, depending on whether you count spectators, duration,

The four girls highlighted this week in SBOL are Mia Velez, Ella Leeman, Gemma Loughlin, and Katrina Tilton. Mia Velez, 9, is the daughter of Yanira Fernandez and Omar Velez. She has sister named Emma, her best friends are Ella and Emily, and she loves her family dog, a Chihuahua named Romeo. Mia’s a fourth grader at the William E. Russell School which is located in Dorchester. The school’s guiding principles are “learning, collaboration, and results.” The Russell is one of only three Boston elementary schools working with EdVestors, a nonprofit school improvement organization geared to facilitate student success. The goal is to improve the quality of teaching and tailoring the curriculum to meet the needs of all students. Mia’s favorite subject is writing and someday plans on being a marine biologist. Mia’s favorite color is green and her favorite food is pancakes. Her favorite TV program is “SpongeBob SquarePants” created by Stephen Hillenburg and first aired in 1999. Her
favorite professional entertainer is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, an English singer and songwriter. Her favorite Super Hero show is “Harlequin”the name of four clown-themed DC Comics characters. And her favorite real life person at the Club is her elderly homework teacher named Emily. “She inspires me,” said Mia. “She tells me stories about her life and they are great. Everyone loves her.” During her leisure time at home, Mia is being taught by her dad on how to play the piano. She also loves to read and is currently reading “Ice Cold Snowman.” This book is just one in a series of Goosebumps books written by R.L. Stine. If Mia was the president of the United States, she said that she would “lower taxes and stop the killer clowns from hurting any more people.” Ella Leeman, 9, is the daughter of Lauren and Joseph Leeman. She has a younger brother named Joseph, two family Bulldogs named Harley and Brody, as well as a black and white cat named Maxie. Ella is in the fourth grade at the James Condon Elementary School which is located in Southie. The Condon’s mission is to help all students “acquire the skills, knowledge and habits” necessary to succeed in life and eventually aspire to be wellinformed and concerned citizens. In the world of sports, Ella plays touch football with her friends at the McCarthy-Rosher Memorial Field next to the Murphy DCR rink. She has been dancing for the last five years at Jacquelyn’s Dance Academy which is located at the Curley Recreation Center. She also loves to swim in her backyard pool. During her free time, Ella enjoys dancing and singing in her room, watching TV with her family, and talking on her IPhone. She also loves to read and is currently reading “Love that Dog”-a free verse piece written by Sharon Creech and first published in 2001. If Ella was our chief executive living on Pennsylvania Avenue, she said that she would “have free ice creams for kids in school all day long and not let teachers give out homework.” Gemma Loughlin, 10, is the daughter of Anna and Andrew Loughlin. She has three family fish named Queenie, Sky, and Grape. She’s in the fifth grade at the Condon School, loves Spanish, and someday plans on being a teacher or a singer. Her favorite color is blue, she likes pizza, and her favorite TV show is “Full House.” Her favorite entertainers are The Chainsmokers, an American DJ duo consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. And
her favorite Club staff is also Monica. In her leisure time, Gemma practices her Irish Step moves. She has been taking classes at the Peggy Woods School of Irish Dance for the past four years. Her favorite step is the Slip jig. She also plays Pokemon and works hard completing her math and Spanish homework assignments. Gemma’s currently reading “Esperanza Rising.” This book published in 2000 is a young adult novel written by Pam Munoz Ryan. The setting is California during the Great Depression and examines the struggle to survive by Mexican farm workers. If she was the President, Gemma said that she’d “pass laws that felt right and veto bad laws, and give kids less homework and more recess time.” Katrina Tilton, 9, is the daughter of Megan Lowe. She has a brother named Richard and three cats. She’s in the fourth grade at the Condon, likes math, and someday plans on being a police officer so she can protect people. Her favorite color is pink and she likes a variety of foods. Her favorite TV show is “Teen Titans” –a DC Comics show featuring super heroes. Her favorite Club staffer is Ryan. And, her favorite singer is Taylor Swift. During her leisure time, Katrina enjoys playing soccer and baseball in her backyard. She also likes playing video games, recess at school, and chasing boys. She’s currently reading “Love that Dog.” If she was the President, she said that she “wouldn’t let Trump near the White House because I know what he’d do.”

2016 Fall Colors in South Boston. And the Drought Mother Nature has her ways, as reflected in her colors. She can be a healer, which is also reflected in said colors. You don’t have to be told that we have had a record drought this summer, with essentially no rainfall between the end of May and Sunday, October 9. On that day, the rain finally poured down gently and steadily, until about two inches had soaked into the parched ground around the ol’ hometown. Not that it made much difference at all, but the rain was heavy enough to postpone the Sox-Indians playoff game till Monday, Columbus Day. Two photos of the southeastern rampart of fort Independence on Castle Island illustrate the effect of that rain vividly. Pulling a reverse play on us, Mother Nature’s healing waters immediately turned a
dull brown hillside of summerlong parched grass into a verdant extravaganza, a fortnight after fall had officially started. Who would have thought that our most vivid fall color this year would be green?!? Many leafy trees all around South Boston had curled, brown-edged leaves instead of the usual colorful displays we are famous for. Willows and honey locusts did their level best to establish a palette, but it was mostly yellows – a brilliant color, of course. But as hard as they tried, these trees couldn’t take the place of the oranges and siren reds of the maples nor the deep, thrumming reddish purple of the oak leaves. Like the 2016 Red Sox, our local autumn leaf-peepers have been told, “Wait ‘til next year.”
Gatey CYO Registration Gate of Heaven CYO house and travel league basketball registration The second night of registration for the Gatey CYO hoop program will be held on Friday, October 21, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Walsh Center gym, which is located behind the South Boston Court House on East Broadway. The instructional house league is for boys in the first and second grades, the midget house league is for boys in grades three through the sixth grades, and the cadet house league is for boys from the sixth through the tenth grade. The instructional house league is for girls in the first and second grades and the midget house league is for girls from the third through the seventh grade. Travel teams are for boys in grades three through
the twelfth and for girls in grades four through the twelfth. Registration fee is $30.00 for one player or $50.00 per family for each program. All old and new players must register.
