Director’s Message

Dear Carbondale Citizens,

Over the past year, the Carbondale Recreation Deptartment has been partnering and collaborating with Garfield County on local efforts to encourage Healthy Eating & Active Living (HEAL), and to fund projects that might assist us in those areas. This past December, the town constructed an outdoor classroom shelter that covers and protects the community bread oven, and is located immediately adjacent to the Demeter Community Garden behind the Third St. Center. This shelter will be utilized for educational gardening and bread oven cooking classes, will provide shade for parents and children working their garden plots, and will be an ideal location for having a picnic in the park. The project was funded through two minigrants from Garfield County. One grant was for $5,000 from LiveWell, and the other grant was for $19,000 from the Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District. Earlier this month it was announced that Carbondale would receive another $5,000 minigrant from LiveWell Garfield County to assist the Town in constructing two paved trail path connections, approximately 515 feet in length, that would connect the Highway 133 Crystal Valley Trail to the bread oven shelter, and also provide a connection to the Third Street bicycle/ pedestrian corridor leading past the library to downtown. The Town is also working with LiveWell and the Garfield County Department of Public Health on a three-year funded State of Colorado grant for public outreach gathering of information and technical assistance to identify non-motorized transportation projects within Carbondale. These projects could include construction of needed neighborhood sidewalks, or new paved trail or path connections, including safer routes to local schools that will encourage and allow for safer movement and mobility by students biking or walking to school. The Town has also recently hired an Aquatics & Wellness Coordinator, Margaret Donnelly, who will be emphasizing the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to improve one’s health and well-being. She represents Carbondale on the Garfield County LiveWell Board, and also directs the efforts of the local Carbondale HEAL Coalition, whose mission is: (1) Create additional opportunities for citizens to live an active healthy lifestyle; (2) Encourage growing and/or eating healthier foods; (3) Encourage workplace wellness; and (4) Emphasize importance of emotional (mental & spiritual) wellness as it relates to meeting your overall physical health needs. It’s exciting that the Recreation Department is a partner in working with the Garfield County LiveWell Coalition, and that we are also coordinating the efforts of the local Carbondale HEAL Coalition in seeking ways, including funding opportunities, to promote a healthy eating and an active living lifestyle for the citizens of Carbondale! If you, either as an individual or a business owner, would like to become involved with the HEAL Coalition, please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Margaret. We meet as a coalition group every other month and would love to have you join us. In the meantime…. Live Well & Live Inspired! Jeff Jackel Recreation Director

Manager’s Message Some say the millenials, or the “Me” generation, can’t focus, are narcissistic and overconfident. Furthermore, they say that those born into what is also known as Generation Y, are lazy and have short attention spans and as a result, our future is surely doomed. Some believe that the generation behind them, which has a plethora of monikers (Gen Z, iGen, Posts, ReGen), will be even worse. Our Summer Brochure cover represents the myriad of thoughts running through a young baseball pitcher’s mind, making us wonder why he is not focused on the task at hand. All he should be thinking about is how to throw a strike. Well, I say to those naysayers that the next generation is going to be the best ever. This young man and his peers have all of the tools to challenge conventional wisdom, and in the process, adapt to their environment and find new and better ways of doing things. They will grow up with all the information from the history of mankind at their fingertips. Their minds are evolving, and I believe they have the ability to process a multitude of thoughts simultaneously. The picture on our cover depicts the optimistic wonder of being young and full of ideas and options. There is a push to call them Generation We. They think before they do, they collectively share everything about themselves, they do not believe in historical individual stereotypes, and they are much nicer to each other than previous generations because they have cultivated the ability to accept people’s differences. So, how do we, a small recreation department, produce programming able to satisfy the next generation’s hyper-curious mind? We need to realize that our mission is to provide more than the traditional team sports and individual sport skills to our participants. We need to create and deliver real opportunities for self-actualization and personal growth in a fun and enticing, yet controlled, environment. It is a challenge, but with our present programming we are creating wonderful youth, experiences, full of possibilites and options. There are twenty other summer programs that our baseball pitcher on the cover could be thinking about. There was just not enough room on the page to accurately represent them all. Please peruse through this brochure to see all of the activities and trips and unique experiences that the Carbondale Recreation Department and many other local organizations offer. (Please see pages 37-39 for other organizations’ summer youth offerings.) Pause for page perusing................ Welcome back! As you can see,we collectively focus our energy on creating programs that have the potential to benefit everyone. With this philosophy in mind, I want to mention our scholarship program. We offer program fee assistance for all of our self-produced youth programs. If you are interested, please fill out the CRCC scholarship paperwork, available on our website and at the front desk of the CRCC. If you qualify, you can receive 50% off of a Carbondale Recreation Department program up to three times a year, per child. Whatever generation you are in, I know you are still curious. Hopefully, our programs can feed your curiosity and satiate it. And by the way, our Generation We pitcher on the front cover threw a perfect strike! Eric Brendlinger Recreation Manager

Welcome to Swim Lessons University, In order to provide better service to your children, and provide more opportunities for continuing education and training for our swim instructors, we are partnering with Swim Lessons University. Swim Lessons University is a child-centered, progressive swim lesson system designed to make children safer when in and around the water. The idea is to hold a child to a higher standard of learning to become a competent swimmer. The stronger the swimmer and better the breath control, the safer your child is in, on, and around water. If your child has been attending the Red Cross swim classes that the Carbondale Recreation Department has offered over the last few years, we will indicate what class number corresponds with the peviously attained Red Cross level. Swim Lessons University uses the theme of class levels. For each class level, the child is awarded a bracelet. The children are asked to wear the bracelets every time they come to the pool. The bracelets are color-coded so the staff and lifeguards can easily identify how comfortable your child is in the water. They are also used as a tracking device for the instructor to log the progression within the class. Plus they are just fun to wear and show off! For more information, or if you have questions about Swim Lessons University, contact Margaret Donnelly at 970-510-1280.
