CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORY
BIG EIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP THE AUTOMATIC BID The Big 12 Conference, and the Big Eight before it, is considered one of the toughest conferences year in and year out across the country in every sport. Baseball is no exception, as the conference has been well represented in the NCAA Tournament and College World Series. That postseason success on the national scene all starts with competition in the Big 12 regular season and the conference tournament. The winner of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament receives an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

The Sooners have taken advantage of that route on three occasions and are the only Big 12 team to advance to every conference tournament since 1997.

OU ended the 1970s with two Big 8 Tournament Championships out of the final three years. The 1977 title was the first for OU in the conference’s postseason tournament, and it came after the Sooners won the regular season title as well. In 1979, the Sooners once again claimed the postseason championship after finishing third in the regular season.

In the first year of the Big 12 Conference, the Oklahoma defeated Texas Tech, 19-17, in the championship game to claim the first conference tournament title. OU finished the regular season in fourth place with an 18-11 record in Big 12 play. The Sooners were 39-20 overall in 1997 and went 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament.

Terry Bogener was a member of the 1977 Big 8 All-Tournament team, the same season the Sooners claimed their first postseason conference championship.
