THE LEGACY OF PRENTICE GAUTT The OU Academics Center that today’s student-athletes use every day now bears the name of the man who left an indelible legacy for Sooner Athletics and helped change a society in the process. “It is appropriate that this center be named after Prentice Gautt,” University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren said. “His personal values and character, along with his leadership as associate commissioner of the Big 12 Conference, continues to bring pride to his alma mater. “His personal example of quiet courage, grace under pressure and dedication to the university helped open the doors of opportunity for countless number of African-American and minority student-athletes who have followed him into collegiate athletics.” Gautt, who died in 2005, was OU’s first African-American scholarship football player. He earned MVP honors in the 1959 Orange Bowl and became an Academic All-American.
