Imagine the Possibilities

the campaign for

C l a f l i n University

From the beginning: a child steps into his father’s shoes or follows in her mother’s footsteps. He imagines the possibilities ahead. She sees the future of a larger life.

The Campaign for Claflin University Our Guiding Principles When the founding fathers of Claflin University opened its doors in 1869, they were filled with great expectations. They imagined the endless possibilities that would be created for promising young people whose deepest desires were to pursue their education and become a part of the American dream that had long been out of their reach. Out of the turmoil of the old South arose ingenuity that would transform the lives of men and women; opening their minds to what was achievable, and training them to excel in a world many never realize existed. By imagining the possibilities that lay before them, our founders laid the groundwork for what would later inspire the establishment of Claflin University’s guiding principles under the leadership of Dr. Henry N. Tisdale. These principles would pave the course for a journey to success. This system of values guided the formation of policies and programs steeped with values which prompted every decision made and action taken; thus our five guiding principles: [ Commitment to Excellence [ Commitment to Valuing People [ Commitment to Being Customer Focused [ Commitment to Exemplary Educational Programs [ Commitment to Fiscal Accountability

From its founding, Claflin University’s guiding vision has promised excellence in education for all. Today, we continue our lineage of academic excellence as Claflin launches The Campaign for Claflin University. Our goal is to raise $96.4 million, the most ambitious in our history. Join us as we embark on this journey to realize this emboldened vision and imagine the possibilities your investment will bring to fruition.

A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e P r e s id e n t 3

There is much that can be said about the power of imagination. Given just one idea, or thought, or even a morsel of a dream or desire, the human mind, through imagination can realize the possibilities and give new life and promise to that which once lay dormant. When I think about what it must have been like for our founding fathers so many years ago when they set out to build something big, something meaningful that would change lives, I am convinced that it must have taken a lot of imagination and innovation to fuel the vision they had for building an institution like Claflin University. For more than 141 years, Claflin has celebrated the imagination unleashed by those who came before us. We are inspired the bold steps they took; by the decisions they made; by their willingness to defy old ideals and institutions which closed the door of opportunity based on race and gender. They imagined a world without limits and pushed through the barriers that hindered enormous dreams from being realized. Imagine where we would all be had they not! Now, the vision of Claflin University is one which stretches our imagination to heights not imagined before. Given its phenomenal transformation over the past decade, and its pursuit of a vision of being recognized as a premier undergraduate teaching and research institution, Claflin is certainly well positioned to compete among other world class institutions of higher learning. For this reason, we’ve activated our imagination, and set a course of action to make this strong university stronger. The Campaign for Claflin University focuses on the areas most critical to this institution’s future advancement: financial aid and scholarships for outstanding students, nationally accredited academic programs, and structural advancements that are first-rate. Our campaign compels us to imagine the endless possibilities we can make real for our students as we look to provide them with a transformative learning environment. That is, unique undergraduate programs that prepare Claflin University graduates to be visionary leaders; helping to improve human conditions throughout the world. The campaign is also about providing equitable compensation to retain and recruit the best faculty scholars. And it’s about an increased endowment to secure the future of the University. Just think…..when we imagine all the possibilities, we open our minds to empower one another, and together we can make achievements that will significantly elevate the University’s capacity to produce world citizens who make a difference. Imagine the possibilities that will position Claflin not only among the best academic institutions in the nation, but the best in the world.

The care we give our physical campus reflects our commitment to this serious place for learning and creativity, which is also “home” to Claflin students, faculty and staff. [ $41.5 million

Building the Endowment: Supporting faculty, students, and the library

We will use sound fiscal entrustment to create faculty chairs, professorships, and scholarships; implement faculty development; and enhance book and media collections as well as instructional equipment. We will continue to attract the most expert and innovative teachers and scholars who will mentor our students in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity.

When you invest in The Campaign for Claflin University, you ensure that each student walks with confidence into his or her future. That is our mission and commission.into his or her future. That is our mission and commission.

STRENGTHEN I NG ACA D EM I C P ROGRAMS The campaign will empower our academic programs in various ways. We will provide technologically advanced equipment in our laboratories and classrooms that will not only train our students and faculty to be more globally competitive, but create undergraduate research opportunities to allow our students to discover solutions to the world’s most critical problems. [ We will enhance internet technology campuswide so that faculty and students will have

the latest upgrades in wireless high speed access to global connectivity.

[ We will equip classrooms with multimedia technology for expert presentations and

portfolio development.

[ We will engage students with faculty in research projects to solve problems of state,

national and global relevance.

And we will hire and retain a first-class faculty through research and faculty development, continuing Claflin’s dominance in research and science. This will include increasing offerings of faculty exchange programs and professional training. Strengthening Academic Programs

This Center will house core research facilities that will allow groups of researchers to collaborate. It will support undergraduate and graduate research students with multimedia classrooms and other spaces. In addition, there will be a 400-seat auditorium to host the distinguished science lecture series which was inaugurated in 2009-2010 with visits from two Nobel Laureates and a NASA astronaut.

While it’s not typical for a liberal arts institution to have a research facility of this size and caliber, we are fully committed to our vision of achieving an international reputation specifically for quality undergraduate research in the STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines. The Science and Technology Center will house research laboratories to support the University’s research efforts in forensic sciences, alternative energy and health disparities such as cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDs.

The Health and Wellness Center expands opportunities for the university to serve healthrelated needs of the university community as well as those members of the greater Orangeburg area. In addition to reinvigorating programs in health and physical education, the new center will allow faculty to develop self-sustaining programs, conduct research and offer courses that address health related issues.

TO REACH THE GOAL 14

The Campaign for Claflin University is a bold venture, indeed. The $96.4 million goal is certainly challenging, well beyond any fundraising initiative the University has ever achieved in its long history. Yet it is being approached with confidence. First, because of the educational enhancements that will result from building the endowment, strengthening the academic programs and enhancing campus facilities. Further, as never before, alumni, businesses and citizens throughout the region are showing their interest and support for Claflin and for the educational opportunities it offers its students. The Campaign has been planned as a seven year program, seeking multi-year financial commitments from its growing roster of benefactors and friends. It is being led and actively carried out by the University’s Board of Trustees, and supported throughout by its wellqualified administrative staff. Following a period of advance planning, active solicitation of selected prospects began in 2008. The campaign entered its more public phases in mid2011 and is scheduled to continue through 2013. The campaign is organized in two divisions, one focusing on Claflin’s inner family, including its alumni, Trustees, staff and students, and a public division seeking contributions from corporations, foundations, public sector support and friends. I n n e r - Fa m i ly P h a s e s

Support for each phase of the campaign calls for extraordinary giving. Each phase is being carried out during a carefully coordinated program of personal contact by dedicated volunteers over the seven year period. While gifts in all amounts will be welcome, the Trustees recognize that a pattern of giving, approximating the numbers of donors and gifts shown here, is likely to prevail if Claflin is to reach the goal of raising $96.4 million. Clearly, this calls for truly committed giving from everyone who shares a desire to help Claflin imagine the future possibilities for its students, for South Carolina, and the nation.
