Songwriter’s Monthly Presents:

Margo Rey: This Holiday Night As Thanksgiving melts into tender memories of friends and family, the season blossoms, unfolding like the petals of a magnificent rose. No matter what your celebrational tendencies are, the soft hum of magic drifts through the brisk December air so that even a crisp snowfall carries a comforting warmth. Forget one-hit wonders, this time of year is populated by one-season wonders, talented individuals who are eager to brand the festivities with their unique take on a holiday standard. The more adventuresome chaps and chap-ettes even try their hand at crafting the next original, modern classic. Unfortunately, most of the time, performers hit it big with a seasonal song, not because the song or its rendition is special, but because the artist is currently “hot.” However, it’s not necessarily that the performer is insincere in his or her attempt to convey a sense of wonder through words and music. In fact, it’s not an easy task to cram all of the joy and history of the holidays into one little tune that will maintain relevance and last for years and years to come. So, how do you tackle something so much bigger than yourself? How do you create a timeless musical treasure? Furthermore, who could possibly hope to measure up to such a task? Margo Rey not only measures up, she excels. On her Christmas EP, This Holiday Night, Rey manages to tap that seasonal vein for the title track, drawing lyrical inspiration from images and traditions that have been lovingly preserved throughout the generations. Musically, the delicate opening of the twinkling piano churns like a winter wind while the bells glisten like a spectacular array of crystalline icicles adorning the eaves of a cozy cottage. The

robust flavor of the song is as evocative of the holiday festivities as a fragrant evergreen decorated in a multitude of brightly colored lights, long-cherished ornaments, and the ethereal sparkle of glittering wisps of tinsel. Born in Acapulco, Mexico, the classically trained artist dabbled in rock and power pop before finding a home in jazz. Then, she moved forward to create her own brand of music that she dubbed “Organica.” Rey’s voice is so rich and sinfully elegant that just listening borders on decadence. Imagine a plush satin trimmed cashmere blanket draped across your shoulders as you sip hot cocoa by the comfort of a warming fire. That’s the marvel of Margo’s soothing, dulcet tones. Rey imprints the two covers on her EP with a gentle kiss of R&B. Her mesmerizing, breathy delivery of “Toyland” redefines the song as an enthralling wonderland where anything is possible — even for adults. Her “Silent Night” grooves like no other version ever has. Rey performs the classic melody with a sophisticated, sizzlingly soulful panache. Margo’s posh voice is a sensual kryptonite that will weaken even the sturdiest of knees. She is a stirring vocalist who electrifies the holidays with her lush arrangements and natural sultry timbre. Margo Rey is not a one-season wonder, she is simply a wonder.
