Quienes Somos La organización Somos Familia fue fundada en el 2007 por dos madres del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco con hijes gay y bisexual con el fin de conectarse con otras familias. Compuesto en su mayoría de voluntaries multigeneracionales, nuestro grupo estableció la siguiente misión y visión. Nuestra misión es fomentar el apoyo y la aceptación de familias y personas latinx que son lesbianas, gay, bisexuales, transgénero, cuir, o que cuestionan su sexualidad y/o género. Imaginamos un mundo en que personas de todas las orientaciones sexuales e identidades de género sean aceptadas y celebradas por sus familias y comunidades. Todos los días hay niñes y jóvenes que están en peligro de acoso y que son sujetos a la violencia por su identidad lesbiana, gay, bisexual, y/o trans. Les jóvenes lesbianas, gay, bisexual, y/o trans que son rechazades por sus familias y comunidades tienen un mayor riesgo de depresión y de intentar suicidarse en comparación con les jóvenes que son aceptades o celebrades por sus familias. Somos Familia junta a las familias latinx para transformar esta realidad. Este proyecto es posible gracias al apoyo de la Asociasión Nacional del Arte y Cultura Latinx, la Fundación Andrew W. Mellon, la Fundación Ford, la línea área Southwest, y la Fundación Surdna por una beca del programa Fundación de Becas del Arte NALAC.

Who We Are Somos Familia was founded by two moms from the San Francisco Bay Area with latinx gay and bisexual children in 2007 to reach out to other families. With a primarily volunteer group of different generations, we established the following mission and vision. Our mission is to establish support and acceptance for Latinx lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning Latinx youth and their families. We envision a world where people of all sexual orientations, gender expressions, and identities are accepted and celebrated by their families and communities. Everyday, children and youth are teased, harassed and subjected to violence because of their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender identities. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans youth who are rejected by their families have a higher risk of depression and attempted suicide compared to youth who are accepted or celebrated by their families. Somos Familia brings families together to transform this reality.
This project is supported in part by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Southwest Airlines, and the Surdna Foundation through a grant from the NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant Program.

¿Que significa el género? En nuestra sociedad colonizada, tu género es asignado cuando naces. Pero el género es una identidad y un concepto social. Tú eres la unica persona que puede identificar tu género. Ser cisgénero es identificarse con el género que fue asignado al nacimiento. Por ejemplo, cuando nací, me asignaron el género de niña. Hoy en día, me identifico como mujer cisgénero. Ser transgénero es identificarse de género(s) diferente(s) del que te asignaron al nacer. Puede ser un género, varios, y/o ninguno. Pero no hay solamente una manera ni una manera correcta de ser trans. Las personas trans son diversas y tienen historias y experiencias diferentes.

In our colonized society, your gender is assigned to you when you’re born and you keep it for your whole life. But gender is an identity and a social concept -- the gender you are assigned at birth may not be the gender you identify with. To be cisgender is to identify as the gender that was assigned to you at birth. For example, when I was born I was assigned the gender of woman. Today, I identify as a cisgender woman. To be transgender is to identify with a gender(s) different from what was assigned at birth. This could be one gender, multiple, or none at all. There is no one correct way to be trans. Trans folk are diverse and we all have different journeys, stories, and experiences.

El binario de género es un concepto restrictivo que dice que solo hay dos identidades de género: uno que es masculino y otro que es femenino. Un hombre puede vestirse con falda y plataformas, y una mujer puede tener pelo corto. La ropa, los trabajos, y muchas otras cosas, no son de un género.
Pero eso no es verdad. Hay más identidades de género y además, las características de ser masculino o femenino puede ser de cualquier persona no específicamente de mujer ni de hombre.
Hay muchas formas de identificarse fuera del binario de género como: Ser género no-binario o género cuir significan identificarse ni como hombre ni como mujer. Género fluido significa identificarse como un género que fluye - a veces se identifica como un género, y a veces otro(s). Ser Dos Espíritus es un tipo de género fuera del binario de gente Indígena. Pero, no se usa esa identidad si no eres Indígena.

The gender binary is a restrictive concept that says there are only two gender identities: being a man (“masculine”) and being a woman (“feminine”). Men can wear dresses and heels, and women can have short hair.
But this isn’t true. There are more gender identities than man and woman. And, anyone can have masculine and/or feminine characteristics regardless whether they identify as man, woman, or another gender.
There are many gender identities that are outside the binary such as:
Clothing, jobs, and many other things shouldn’t be gendered.
To be non-binary or genderqueer means to identify as neither man nor woman. To be genderfluid is to have a fluid gender identity - sometimes you identify as one gender, and other times other(s).
To be Two-Spirit is a gender identity outside the binary among Indigenous people. But do not use this identity if you are not Indigenous.

Un pronombre es una palabra que reemplaza un sustantivo en una oración. Los pronombres se utilizan para evitar repetir los mismos nombres una y otra vez. Unos pronombres que son usados a menudo son él, ella, y elle. Algunas personas usan un pronombre, y otras usan varios. Otras usan todos, y otras no usan pronombres. En ese caso, se usa unicamente el nombre de la persona. También, su pronombre no necesariamente es el mismo de la identidad de género.

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence. Pronouns are used to avoid repeating the same words over and over again. Some pronouns that are used often are he/him/his, she/her/ hers, and they/them/theirs. Some people use one pronoun, and some use more than one. Others use all pronouns, and some do not use any. In this case, just use the person’s name. Also, the pronouns you use are not necessarily the same as the gender you identify with.
Hi! My name is Guapi. I use they/them/ theirs pronouns. “If you need something, you can ask them.” “Their favorite color is blue.”

ISABEL SANCHEZ (they/them) is an artist who turns used or unwanted things into jewelry. Their film slide earrings are bright, resilient to almost all weather, and can take many shapes. Their identity as a gender non-conforming, latinx person contributes greatly to the work that they like to create. They look forward to supporting QTPOC by donating $1 from each purchase to the community organization Black and Pink.

for a while, i rejected everything about my identity that went against my southern baptist upbringing. it was so hard not being able to fully express to my family or peers what was going on in my baby brain and how much i felt that i was hiding a huge sin from everyone.
nowadays, i’m all about representational media and making sure that people, especially the youth of today, know that these identities exist, have existed, and will continue to exist long after we’re gone. i wanted to make this for other nonbinary latinx folx to feel seen and maybe even feel prideful at the things we’re capable of doing.
por un tiempo, rechacé todo de mi identidad que fue contra mi educación religiosa bautista. fue muy dificil no poder expresar que estaba pasando en mi mente joven ni con mi familia ni con mis amigues. me sentía como que les estaba escondiendo un gran pecado.
ahora, tengo pasión por la media representativa y asegurarnos que la gente, los jóvenes en particular, sepan que esas identidades existen, han existido, y van a continuar exstiendo después de nuestro tiempo en la vida. quería hacer esta obra para que otras personas nobinarias latinx puedan sentirse aceptadas y orgullosas de lo que podemos hacer.

now that i get to make art that i’ve been yearning for all my life, i can’t help but only create things that show off how incredible the enby (short for nb created by Black non-binary people to differentiate themselves from the overwhelmingly white nonbinary narrative) and trans folx in my life are.

this is a self-portrait. the colors used are derived from the colors in the nonbinary flag (yellow, white, purple, black). this is the first time i have made a self-portrait that is tied to my gender. i made my pose look at peace to represent the selfassurance i feel now, as a young adult, about my gender. the leaves blowing in the “wind” behind me are a reminder that we are part of the natural world no matter how many times the dominant narrative tells us otherwise.

Crear arte ha sido una forma de expresar lo que no puedo decir. También ha sido una forma de documentar como quiero verme durante mi transición, pero mayormente es una manera de recordarme que todo lo que dibujo y escribo va a ocurir. Mi dibujo es un recuerdo del hombre en que me convirteré y la esperanza que un día van a quererme mis padres por ser trans.

Making art has been an outlet to express what I can’t really say. It has been also been a way to document how I want to see myself through my transition, but mostly a way to remind myself that everything I draw or write down will happen. Art is emotion in color, notes, ingredients and many other mediums. For myself, art is about creating a greater human experience for us all. I’ve been able to translate those experiences to art, more specifically, tattooing. This gives me the ability to connect with people as well as educate them about the LGBTQ+ community within a more intimate setting. To be a transgender person-of-color (POC) in a world full of adversity means being granted a greater perspective on things. This change gave me the strength to be myself and to protect others. We create because we all crave understanding; we deserve to see the beauty in each other. I’m grateful for art and for this existence. El arte es emoción en color, apuntes, ingredientes y otros medios. Para mi, el arte es crear una mejor experiencia para todos los humanos. He podido traducir esas experiencias en la forma del arte, específicamente, el tatuaje. Esto me da la abilidad de conectar con personas y también educarles sobre la comunidad LGBTQ+ en un escenario más personal. Ser una persona trans y de color en un mundo lleno de adversidad significa tener una perspectiva más grande de las cosas. Ese cambio me da la fuerza para ser mi mismo y para proteger a otros.
