Super Cool

JUST OPENED

Having taken the celebrity and sporting worlds by storm, Christchurch has the first cryotherapy treatment centre in the country following the opening of Cryotherapeutics NZ at B-18 Studios. The go-to treatment for elite athletes and a growing number of A-list celebs including Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba and Daniel Craig, cryotherapy ‘super cools’ your body in a noninvasive manner with temperatures ranging from -120°C to -180°C for two to four minutes. Research suggests it improves athletic performance, increases energy levels, maintains healthy sleep patterns and produces collagen to help reduce the signs of aging – too cool! cryotherapeutics.co.nz

Get your cuddle on and satiate that caffeine craving down at the city’s newest scratching post, Catnap Café, the purrfect place to pull up a pew, tuck into some tasty eats and lax with some feline pals. The brainchild of Nate Ball and Alyssa O’Connor (two avid cat lovers who also volunteer with Cat Rescue Christchurch), the café was born from a Kickstarter campaign and has evolved into a buzzing business. Operating as a traditional café (vego and vegan fare is the order of the day) and home for rescue cats, the space is decked out with the coolest fixtures including a funky tree house as well as the option to adopt. Due to popular demand (duh!), you’ll need to book yourself a spot to chill with the cats, or head in for a brew and chance it. catnapcafe.co.nz

THE FIRING LINE Cityscape meets professional globetrotter Peter Dunne, one of the intrepid and passionate experts behind the city’s leading travel agency Discover Travel. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY? I had been travelling the world for six years and ran out of money so I had to work out what to do with my life. I approached a travel agency in Manchester for a job and was told I wasn’t suitable as I didn’t have a degree in Travel and Tourism. I then proceeded to visit the said travel agency and sat down in front of the boss pretending to be a customer. I mentioned that I had visited every destination they specialised in and wondered if they should rethink their recruitment policy. I started work two weeks later. WHAT’S THE SECRET TO A KILLER ITINERARY? Less is more. Go to fewer places, but go for longer, get under the skin of a place and get some real experiences. Going somewhere for one night just to get a stamp in your passport can be a huge waste of time and money. TELL US YOUR TOP TRAVEL TIP. Wherever you are, read every sign, local newspaper, notice board, anything! The number of incredible concerts, shows, displays, recitals I have stumbled across just by doing this is amazing. WHAT’S YOUR MOST HAIRRAISING TRAVEL EXPERIENCE? Trying to stop my two female travelling companions from being arrested by soldiers late one night in West Africa. The soldiers were obviously drunk and looking for a sizeable bribe, but all the negotiations had to be made in my schoolboy French – somewhat hindered, or possibly enhanced, by my considerable intake of the local spirit! Things were looking grim until a commanding officer arrived and, realising the situation and hearing the girls on the verge of hysterics at the thought of a night in an African jail, curtly dismissed the two soldiers and apologised to us all in near perfect English. WHAT’S THE ONE DESTINATION THAT NEEDS TO BE ON EVERYONE’S BUCKET LIST? Having visited over 125 countries I am often asked what is the best place I have visited and this is difficult because every destination offers something different. However, I would have to say the most interesting place I have visited has to be Jerusalem – the sheer weight of history, the old city divided into the four quarters, the more recent Arab/Israeli history, the most sacred sights of three religions, all make this a must visit destination. BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Who doesn’t love talking about travel? Discover Travel clients are an interesting bunch. My first four conversations this morning were about Bhutan, Iran, Noosa and Taipei. WHERE ARE YOU OFF TO NEXT? I do love my socialist republics. I am recently back from Albania and Macedonia and last year visited Armenia and Georgia. My next trip, Trump permitting, will be to North Korea to complete the Mausoleum Grand Slam. I have visited Lenin, Chairman Mao, Ho Chi Minh and just need to see Kim Il-Sung to complete the set! discovertravel.co.nz

GROUP THERAPY

Skeptics in the Pub

Fancy socialising and knocking back a bevvy with a (healthy) dose of skepticism sprinkled into the mix? Hit up local group Skeptics in the Pub, where you can mosey on down to the informal gathering and chat with like-minded individuals and critical thinkers. The group provides a casual and lax environment where attendees are encouraged to discuss and share ideas on an array of topics that promote skepticism, science and rationality … in a pub (the Pegasus Arms) setting – they’re called the Skeptics in the Pub for a reason. The Christchurch branch is only a small (if you call 500+ members small) faction of the NZ Skeptics Society – which has been on the scene since ’86 and also follows the principles of promoting critical thinking. Don your thinking cap and throw yourself into some epic discussions of reasoning. We’ll drink to that! skeptics.nz

CITY SPOTLIGHT

Comeback Queen

Cityscape goes beyond the traffic-cone coloured safety mesh for an exclusive sneak peek of the extensive reno work happening at the regal Christchurch Town Hall.

A cacophony of construction noise reverberates around the Christchurch Town Hall as the magnificent ol’ lady is pimped out in preparation for her long-awaited comeback in February 2019. Fine dust covers the storm-coloured new concrete bedrock which was the superstructure’s biggest casualty in the city’s 2011 earthquake. Violin-brown coloured staircases and cloned red-garnet octagonal carpet remain dormant under thin layers of protective cardboard waiting for a resurrection while the penetrating shrill from a nearby drill ricochets off the renovated foyer – which includes a shiny new marble floor and wait for it … a new permanent bar. Love! The riotous clanging is a sign things are moving steadily forward giving Christchurch Town Hall project advisor Todd Turner something to smile about. “Taking on this project has been so exciting and I can’t wait to get people and music back in here again. As terrible as the earthquake was, this building has now been given the opportunity to live longer.” The mammoth building’s slick overhaul includes tricked-up architecture and acoustics, state-of-the-art technology, multi-use conference rooms and other funky additions sure to blow your mind like a well-executed brass instrument. Long-time residents the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will return home to a specially designed rehearsal space. The unbreakable bones of the elliptical concert auditorium house the jewel in the Queen’s crown with a modernised seating configuration and performance stage. The stupendous space will transform easily from a classical venue to head-banging rock hall. A snazzy makeover is in order for The James Hay Theatre with a retractable floor and killer acoustics while the old Boater’s restaurant and split-level function space has been given the broom. In its place is the new aptly named single-level floored Avon Room overlooking the Avon River and the picture postcard iconic Ferrier fountains – yes, they’re back! vbase.co.nz

CSO’s upcoming Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Brothers in Arms (Air Force Museum, Sep 22) tells the tale of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Maurice Ravel, two composers whose friendship and life experiences shaped the pieces they conceived. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is a light hearted homage to his late friends of the First World War while Williams’ Pastoral Symphony (Symphony No. 3) and The Lark Ascending – inspired by the poem of the same name – taps Williams’ emotional war time experiences. Cityscape caught up with The Central’s Art Director, Jonathan Smart on why you need to check out mysterious local artist Simon Edwards’ upcoming exhibition Finding the Way. Christchurch artist Simon Edwards is quietly forging a fine reputation as a thoughtful champion of landscape with his paintings of the imagination. Conjuring images of land, sea and sky that are truly wonderful to look at and feel a part of. They are of no specific place, but through layers of oil paint and ink vigorously rubbed, brushed and glazed, he conjures dark mountain spaces and lakes under looming skies that feel familiar to us all. The views most often are imagined, but are informed by many years of intimate observation. His new exhibition, at The Central in the Arts Centre, showcases his wonderful drawing talents – in framed works of charcoal on paper. Edwards recently returned from research in China where he studied their long tradition of the landscape sublime in scroll painting. That influence can be seen here in the steep, vertiginous aspect of the scenes depicted, and in the lovely materiality of charcoal worked into paper. From rich velvety blacks to rubbed back whites, Edwards’ eye for detail is meticulous, and the overall impression is beautiful and very elegant. LORD OF LAUGHTER Rocking one of the quirkiest nicknames – Britain’s “foremost rock goblin” – Bill Bailey, is bringing his latest comedic venture Earl of Whimsy to Horncastle Arena (Sep 22) along with his infamous skullet in tow. A legend on the comedy scene, Bailey is set to delve into that belly-aching buffoonery he’s adored for with his latest collection of stories, dismantled jokes and musical mockery that taps into Britain’s vivid history, ancient Viking battles, Shakespeare’s contribution to comedy and the comedian’s own ancestry. The well-rounded lord of laughter won’t be satisfied until everyone leaves his show in a giddy old state and is set to be Bailey’s cleverest, daftest, most eccentric show yet. billbailey.co.uk

CAPTAIN’S LOG Cityscape catches up with living legend, former captain of USS Enterprise and all-round counter culture icon William Shatner, who’s beaming down to Christchurch for the first time in October, on getting standing Os at 87, his foray into country music, why Shatner Claus is going to be the best Christmas album ever and wrangling drunk Aussies.

WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S RECEIVING ALL THESE RAVE REVIEWS? It’s a wonderful theatrical evening, the stories are amusing, it brings great laughter, some of the stories are insightful – I’m using adjectives that I’ve read somewhere – it’s somewhat heart-breaking, there’s music and pictures. The experience that I sometimes refer to is playing to a full house at this big theatre here in Los Angeles after seeing an oratorio with huge cast perform there several weeks earlier. I’m alone on stage with 3,500 people in the audience and trying to do the same entertaining job as all those people I had seen weeks before. It was awesome, and they stood and applauded at the end – so something good is happening. WHAT’S THE FIRST RULE OF LAW IN SHATNER’S WORLD? Talk fast and move faster. YOU’RE ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING CELEBRITIES EVER WITH MORE THAN 60 YEARS IN SHOWBIZ – WHAT’S YOUR SECRET? I’ve been lucky that my health has always been good. I’ve broken an occasional limb here and there, mostly from horses, but in general nothing ill has befallen me. A good deal of it is luck, some of it is what I do – exercise and watch the diet and all – but mostly good health has to

do with luck and your genetic structure, I’ve lost none of my energy and none of my passion for life. And even at this age I still want to do well and for people to love me. I want to make them laugh and amuse them – so all that is there.

worthwhile about being upset, angry and anxious? The thing about getting old is realising how quickly life is over. It’s beyond belief how quickly time goes by, so things that you think are important generally are not.

WHAT’S FEEDING THIS ENERGY? Well I’m just busy, busy writing books and doing albums, on tour with a show like this. I’m just inordinately busy; today, for example, I’ve done an uncountable number of interviews for a country music album I’ve got out there called Why Not Me, and I’m doing a lot of publicity for this show and performing on stage at various places.

WHEN YOU SNAGGED THE ROLE AS CAPTAIN KIRK ON STAR TREK, DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA IT WOULD GO ON TO BECOME SUCH AN ENDEARING SHOW AND ICONIC CULTURAL REFERENCE POINT? No, of course not. Star Trek was moderately received, went on for three years and was cancelled. Everyone thought that was the end of a nice show, but that it was the end of it. It took about six or seven years before it began to pick up energy and steam. We made a movie, then there was another movie and then finally it took off and became the extraordinary thing, the showbiz phenomena it is today. It took a while.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE COUNTRY ALBUM? I wanted to perform country numbers, so part of the process was having composers in Nashville send me material and my okaying it, and working with it alongside Jeff Cook, who is one of the prime members of the group Alabama, and getting acquainted with the whole country world which I have admired and listened to, but never been a part of. HOW HAVE AUDIENCES CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED OUT? You know people laugh and cry at universal things. The things that make human beings laugh and touch their hearts have always been the same – mostly it has to do with love – and so my show will make you laugh, and quite possibly make you cry in places – and it has remained the same. I have seen no change in the many audiences that I’ve been in front of – the stuff that got laughs still gets laughs, it’s a matter of me performing it well. WHAT DO YOU KNOW NOW THAT YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN WHEN YOU STARTED OUT? Well I’ll tell you, as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised I’m beginning to think ‘what’s all the fuss about?’ What’s

16

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ September 18

WHAT SORT OF IMPACT DID THE SHOW HAVE ON YOU? I wrote a book called Leonard delineating my friendship with Leonard Nimoy. I’ve written several books about my experiences backstage on Star Trek and I’ve written several more books of fiction on what Captain Kirk would have done if he was still alive, and how I think he would have reacted – a lot of it being autobiographical. A lot of things I’ve done, both before, which has involved science fiction, and after, which is a lot of writing and performing on stage is from Star Trek. So I’ve taken a lot from Star Trek and made it my life for a period of time. YOU HAVE A SERIOUSLY IMPRESSIVE RESUME SPANNING ACTOR, DIRECTOR, PRODUCER, AUTHOR, SINGER, HORSE BREEDER AND MANY MORE – WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR CAREER BUCKET LIST? You know I’ve got a great new television show called Better Late Than Never which

SHATNER’S WORLD. THE RETURN DOWN UNDER! BOASTS ‘MORE STORIES, MORE SONGS, MORE MUSING AND MORE SHAT’, WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT? You can expect wonderful entertainment, to laugh a lot, cry some and think about some other things. Of all the things I’ve done on stage, this has received more kudos, enthusiasm and standing ovations – it’s really a wonderful evening in the theatre and I’m hopeful that the people of Christchurch will agree and have a great time with me.

I’m having a lot of fun doing, I’ve got two albums: Why Not Me is the name of the country album, Shatner Claus is the name of the Christmas album, and Live Long And… is the name of the book that’s out in between – all of that is like a bucket list. I’m fulfilling my bucket list, bucket overfloweth. TELL US ABOUT SHATNER CLAUS, IS IT A COVERS ALBUM OR ARE THEY NEW SONGS? I’m doing a mixture. I’m doing traditional songs, but differently. I’m putting a little twist on the traditional songs and I’ve got a beautiful song written by a veteran about Christmas in Afghanistan compared to home, which we set to music. I do ’Twas the Night Before Christmas to music and a couple of other songs that are just different interpretations but definitely Christmas-like. So it will be a great Christmas album, people will enjoy it but it will be a little bit different. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CRAZIEST FAN ENCOUNTER? I was in Australia some years ago and a fan started talking (somewhat drunken), walked up the aisle and got up on stage. He was a big guy and there was no security around, so I made him sit down and answer some questions – I got him talking until security arrived and towed him off stage.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING IN CHRISTCHURCH? You know I have had a passing reference to Christchurch; I was shooting in Wellington and flew to Queenstown. Christchurch looked so beautiful from the air, so I asked a few people about it. Then when I was working in Australia the earthquakes came and several people had homes there, they showed me pictures and we talked about it. So I’m looking forward to coming to Christchurch, finally getting on the ground and seeing it for myself.

Hello Sunday’s former church on Elgin Street in Sydenham houses a multi-award-winning (including last year’s Christchurch Hospitality Awards Café of the Year gong) brunch and daytime dining hotspot turning out inspired eats – including some great smashed avos – and seasonal treats. Uncommon on Tuam Street has swag for days, and serves up some seriously tasty eats, including their breakfast board, which features their famous eggs slow-poached at 63-degrees for 45 minutes. Effortless cool also prevails at Unknown Chapter, who roast their own specialty beans and belt out amazing Shredded-Beef Flatbread. Head to Waltham to discover the under-the-radar charms of The Exchange’s open kitchen at XCHC on Wilsons Road. Forget about menus though, as they stock their impressive cabinet fare with seasonal fresh food made daily and all sourced from local suppliers. For an industrial edge, you can’t beat the speakeasy swank of prohibition cool Mama Hooch on Colombo Street. Sophistication and share plates abound at Addington’s Town Tonic on Bernard Street – this sleek eatery serves up the freshest local fare by way of genius chef/owner Jamie Bennett alongside organic coffee, craft beers and fine wines. Neighbouring Addington Coffee Co-Op’s wares come with a side serving of good karma; roasters of Jail Breaker coffee out of a former mechanic’s workshop, the café is a local fave and their banana bread is the stuff of legend. On Riccarton Road, Park Ranger’s rustic aesthetic and artisan focus has made it a go-to haunt (along with their Reuben Sandwich). In the central city, Apartment Coffee’s alt-cool urban den adds a Japanese edge to their menu, which stars the likes of Karaage Fried Chicken and tacos. And channelling seriously quirky cool, the team at Spooky Boogie in Lyttelton combine primo coffee (from neighbouring roasters Lyttelton Coffee Co.), cakes, and cookies with local art, collectibles and some mean vinyl.

MEET THE LOCALS

LEADER OF THE PACK Cityscape catches up with legendary local thesp and Top Dog Theatre founder and director Derek Doddington, who’s celebrating New Zealand Theatre Month with a production of Kate De Goldi’s iconic novel The ACB with Honora Lee, on the attraction of gritty plays, Shakespeare, dream productions and why he considered turning down a New Zealand Order of Merit.

/ LEADER OF THE PACK

HOW DOES A STATISTICIAN BECOME THE BRAINS AND BRAWN BEHIND ‘CHRISTCHURCH’S BEST SMALL THEATRE COMPANY’? Top Dog Theatre just happened after I wanted to direct a gritty play called West by Steven Berkoff, which sold out for the season, so we just decided to do more shows. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME? I just used an online thesaurus and started by typing in the word ‘quality’, which is the type of theatre I wanted to direct. From ‘quality’ I chose another word which listed further options and I just kept clicking until I saw the words ‘Top Dog’. TDT IS KNOWN FOR TACKLING EDGIER FARE, WHAT’S YOUR PERFORMANCE SELECTION CRITERIA? It was great to be known for putting gritty plays on. We still try and find scripts which might shock, but for New Zealand Theatre Month we’re delighted to have chosen a NZ playwright. YOU CHOSE KATE DE GOLDI’S THE ACB WITH HONORA LEE, WHY THIS NOVEL? I heard about the New Zealand Theatre Month early enough to start reading NZ plays and had even chosen one, but was approached to put this play on. I read it a couple of times and loved it, so I swapped with no regrets. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE TDT VERSION? Because the adaptation from the book has stayed faithful to the characters, Top Dog is mainly concentrating on bringing those characters to life. But we are putting our own spin on it through an ingenious set and Brechtian approach. YOUR OPEN AIR SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTIONS HAVE BECOME AN INSTITUTION ON THE SUMMERTIMES CALENDAR, WHAT IS IT ABOUT SHAKESPEARE THAT MAKES HIS WORK SO ENDURING? Shakespeare wrote great stories in a language that we are losing, so it’s an immediate challenge to bring these very special works to life. And like the Globe Theatre, we use the same stage at Mona Vale to create a whole new theatrical experience. WHAT ARE THE THREE GOLDEN RULES OF DIRECTING? A director needs to get a clear overall picture of what a play is trying to achieve. I believe directing is about finding the relationships of the characters on stage, and this means allowing the actors to explore and express themselves fully, rather than just moving them around.

A GENIE GIVES YOU THREE THEATRICAL WISHES, TELL US ABOUT YOUR DREAM PRODUCTION, CAST AND VENUE. A dream production is one which totally excites me right from my first or second reading of the play. My dream cast is when I throw ideas in and they throw ideas back, so we all work totally with what I am trying to produce, and my dream venue is simply where I know my audience can see everything that’s going on, be it an intimate indoor theatre of an expanse of grass or concrete amphitheatre. YOU’RE ALSO AN ACCOMPLISHED ACTOR, WHAT’S ONE ON-STAGE EXPERIENCE YOU’D RATHER FORGET? Entering in through the side door of a large packed theatre in the UK and delivering the first line of the wrong speech. I remember saying, “but we’ll come to that later.” YOU WERE CONSIDERING TURNING DOWN YOUR NEW ZEALAND ORDER OF MERIT, WHY? Ha. You do what you love doing. So life already feels great. I stumbled a bit on the idea of being given something special for something which was already incredibly fulfilling. And I couldn’t do it without the actors. Maybe they should have all been up there with me. WHERE IS IT NOW? In its wee box. I last had it out at a close friend’s wedding – they insisted I was only allowed to attend if I wore the medal. It was a great laugh. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU AND THE FAMILY TO MOVE TO CHRISTCHURCH? Christchurch is a comfortable size, so you can do whatever you want in terms of sport, activities and have a great life. Having grown up in London, Christchurch offered a less frantic and stressful existence. AND WHAT’S KEPT YOU HERE? My wife and I are entrenched here through business and friends, many of whom are through our Top Dog family. We just wouldn’t be able to do many of the things we do now if we moved. TELL US ABOUT THE VENUE YOU ARE CURRENTLY HAUNTING. If you’re asking about the Merivale Lane Theatre; how lucky are we to have so many great new theatres at our disposal? And this one’s a blooming beauty. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO CELEBRATE THE END OF A PRODUCTION? Hopeless. I usually collapse. I always give myself a wee while though after the final show. Just to stand on the stage, be it wood or grass, and nod, and say, “Yep. Done that!” Then have a beer and go home.

BEAST A SIMPLE FAVOUR With epic blockbuster comedic hits to his name (think Bridesmaids, The Heat and the tricked up, all-female ensemble remake of Ghostbusters), Paul Feig has pulled a fast one on us, switching up genres and serving some mystery in his latest cinematic drop A Simple Favour (Sep 13). Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) and Blake Lively (The Shallows) are the star power in this film which sees the former putting her sleuthing skills to the test after Lively’s character does a Houdini and disappears without a trace. Expect betrayals, reversals, a dead body and the revolving questions of who is duping who that’s guaranteed to keep you guessing till the credits roll.

In his feature film debut, Michael Pearce has hit cinematic gold with his dark, fairy tale-esque Beast (Oct 4), which explores the troubled life of Moll (Jessie Buckley, Taboo) and her encounters with the elusive Pascal (Johnny Flynn, Lovesick). Finding herself entangled in the allure of Pascal and the control of her oppressive family, secrets surrounding Pascal unfold and reveal that he could be linked to a string of brutal murders. Already creating a buzz among cinephiles and early reviews raving the film “plays like bleak poetry, unfurling its psychological thrills while guided by its captivating leads and mesmerising, visceral visuals” make this gripping British thriller a must-see.

The killer tracks on high-rotation in the Cityscape office.

HA THE UNCLEAR ‘Stuck In My Head’ Invisible Lines

Listening TOAST TO OUR DIFFERENCES – RUDIMENTAL

British electronic collective/force of nature Rudimental are dropping their third album/celebration of togetherness and connectivity that is Toast to our Differences, blessing our ears on September 7. If early chart slaying releases ‘These Days’ (tag teaming Jess Glynne, Macklemore and Dan Caplen) ‘Sun Comes Up’ (featuring James Arthur) and title track ‘Toast to our Differences’ (rocking the holy trinity of talent that is Protoje, Hak Baker and Shungudzo) are anything to go by, this upcoming behemoth is tipped to be the very definition of all killer, no filler.

AAARTH – THE JOY FORMIDABLE

Reading

With an upcoming itinerary that includes a plethora of Stateside shows and prepping for their main stage features at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, you’d think Welsh trio The Joy Formidable, would hold off on diving into recording and producing an album … yeah well nah. Ditching any notion of sanity they possessed, the alt-rockers trekked on with their album AAARTH which will be up for grabs on vinyl and major digital giants

JED PARSONS ‘Time’ Midnight Feast

from September 28. Repping quite possibly one of the more unusual album names, frontman Ritzy Bryan shed some light on the title and explains that it “falls somewhere between a scream, exaltation and a play on words”. Their singles ‘The Wrong Side’ and ‘Dance of the Lotus’ have become instant hits and possess punchy riffs with the classic Joy Formidable flair.

LIVING THE DREAM – SLASH FEAT. MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS On hiatus from the never-ending-money-train that is the Guns N’ Roses reunion tour, the man behind the signature brood and iconic top hat, Slash and his band Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators have done a great thing, they’re releasing a new album Living The Dream which will debut on September 21. Their latest album venture sees high-octane riffery shot through with Slash’s trademark electrifying solos all packaged in 12 sharply executed tracks. Teaser track ‘Driving Rain’ certainly delivers with blistering bluesy riffs reminiscent of vintage Aerosmith (according to Kennedy) and solos layered with funk.

HOW TO BE FAMOUS – CAITLIN MORAN Described by Caitlin Moran as “Pippi Longstocking, but with whisky”, the sequel to the hilarious How to Build a Girl sees feisty protagonist Johanna Morrigan back as a fame-hungry columnist hitching her wagon to her famous friends by ruthlessly critiquing their lives during the epicentre of the Britpop explosion.

One of the most hotly-anticipated collabs between big entertainment companies, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac Games and Marvel, sees Peter Parker donning his signature suit in Marvel’s Spider-Man available exclusively to PS4 consoles (Sep 7). SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER We feel like proud parents seeing how far our fave kick-ass Tomb Raider character, Lara Croft has come since the days of sporting the, uh, certain triangular female anatomy (shout out to the killer graphics back in ’96) and becoming a viral sensation for locking the poor old butler in the freezer (we were all guilty of this). Two decades on, Shadow of the Tomb Raider (Sep 14) serves as the sequel to its two predecessors with Lara traipsing about Latin America in the bid to obtain a relic which has a connection to her late father. Accidentally setting off a Mayan apocalypse (whoops) while evading the ruthlessness of Trinity, Lara’s latest expedition is set to be a wild ride. tombraider.com

REVIEW

No.4 Bar & Restaurant

4 Mansfield Avenue, 03 355 3720, no4bar.co.nz

Perched atop a mini-beach of greywacke pebbles and driftwood, the ocean-fresh Bluff oysters glisten in their half shells while their deep-fried counterparts tempt with a golden batter. We’ve opted for a 50-50 split of each, torn between the briny freshness of the natural state and the well-earned reputation preceding the No.4 Famous Beer Battered variety. The latter choice comes with an addictive malt vinegar on the side, their primo marriage of crunchy exterior and delicate moreishness beneath makes them an instant hit, while the pristine plump natural oysters ignite an intense flavour explosion when tricked up with the accompanying cucumber vinaigrette with a kick, and are brilliant between sips of the chilled charms and refreshing mineral edge of Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc. We’ve paired the world famous molluscs with the Panang Flatbread, a feisty fresh fusion of Asian dukkah, tofu, coriander and Panang pesto, where a sprinkling of pork crackling shines things off with a satisfying crunch and sets a high bar for the evening’s proceedings.

A stalwart on the Christchurch dining scene, No.4 Bar & Restaurant has the chilled, easy-going charms that have a way of making all cares of the outside world melt away on arrival. Housed in a 1920s Edwardian villa in the heart of Merivale, we’re greeted by blazing fires in the al fresco areas and the black-clad efficiency of front of house charmer Alex Hines, who deftly guides us to an intimate enclave off the main bar. The restaurant’s full house on a Monday signals the next level gastro fare to come, while bright red poppy designed lampshades hang from the ceiling and natural timber, buttery leather seating and copper furnishings create an upscale home vibe and are all set to a soundtrack of the excited chatter and clink of contented diners. After Alex divulges the history on crowd favourite and back-by-populardemand Risotto we immediately order it alongside the Pork Belly. Both rocking an Asian twist; the Risotto is a party-in-the-mouth starting a riot of flavours and the perfect union of sweet, salty and sour with firm-fleshed

35

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ September 18

flavoursome prawns studding thick, al dente risotto. It’s set off with the citric tang of lime and delightful heat of a fierce sambal tempered by coconut and the added textural, nutty crunch of deep fried shallots. Similarly impressive, the Pork Belly’s art-on-a-plate presentation delivers a melt-in-the-mouth rich rendered meaty hit complete with audible crackling. The ravishing hum of a Malaysian kumara and apple curry is a welcome and refreshing take on the traditional apple sauce staple and a sublime wine match by Alex, Main Divide Merlot Cabernet’s blackcurrant, berry fruits and plum flavours and velvety finish, provides the perfect cut through. We meet our sticky end with an exclusive, yet to make it to the dessert menu cocktail – the Caramel Dessert Martini and the Trio of Lemon. Fittingly garnished with a Lindt caramel chocolate, in lieu of the classic skewered olive, drinks guru Reece Gardner’s martini is a dreamy, creamy concoction of butterscotch liqueur and vodka layered over a decadent caramel. Underpinned by elements of saltwater taffy and spices, it’s a show-stopping liquid dessert and perfect foil to the acid profile of the lemon threesome. The tangy trifecta offers a prettily plated deconstructed lamington and a sharp lemon tart, complete with a caramelised brittle top and buttery crust, blow torched smoky meringue, and whirls of tarty lemon and cream. Sated as we are, there’s still the matter of the too-good-toleave caramel in the martini glass, which sees us both reaching for our spoons.

CAKE WALK You’re not a true cake addict until you’ve hopped across the ditch and eaten your way down Melbourne’s famed Acland Street. Making the beachside suburb of St. Kilda an even sweeter place to visit (outside of all The Secret Life of Us location spotting), iconic cake shops like Monarch and Le Bon have been pushing glamorous confections on the strip since the 1930s. Devour a doughnut, chow down on a cheesecake or smash a custard tart – whatever your addiction, you’re sure to get a sugar high (and possibly Type 2 diabetes). aclandstreetvillage.com.au

ON POINTE(R) SISTERS On Pointe Barre & Wellness Studio’s dynamic duo Lyndal Woodham (Bootybarre master trainer) and Katrina Buchanan (clinical nutritionist and Bootybarre Instructor) have been toning long lean muscles, increasing endurance and perking bodies up in all the right places since they opened their Bootybarre studio in the city. The fun fusion workout technique combines elements of dance, pilates and yoga, and is a favourite among Victoria’s Secret models who credit it for keeping them runway ready. Small, intimate classes mean you get to know your fellow exercisers, while regular special events like blokes’ barre night (featuring beers, lads! on Sep 21), barre bingo, group sessions on the Pilates reformer apparatus and one-off events like this month’s fashion and make-up event (Sep 28) keeping things more than interesting. onpointenz.com

THE LAST WORD

Funk Soul Brother Cityscape kicks it old skool with Kiwi Master of Electronic Funk/musician extraordinaire Laughton Kora ahead of the CSO’s NZ Music of the 80s gig this month on growing up in a musical family, the early Kora days, his signature break dancing move and “mass fails”. YOU’RE KNOWN AS THE “MASTER OF ELECTRONIC FUNK”, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF? Master of Electronic Funk ... that sounds cool! I like all sorts of stuff. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been enjoying timeless storytelling and current producers/ composers. So, genres don’t matter. Film, dance, theatre and video games; some cool stuff out there ... I’m into it! WHERE AND HOW DID YOUR MUSICAL CAREER START? Five or six-years-old? My old man is a musician. Playing music was a way of life growing up. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN A MUSICAL FAMILY? Thinking back now, I don’t think we realised how lucky we were. I mean we practised every day, but it was natural. Singing on the marae and shed parties with an acoustic guitar and family. HOW DID WINNING THE SMOKEFREE ROCK QUEST CHANGE THINGS? I felt like I could make a living out of this. I was shit at school, but winning the SFRQ gave me some confidence – life skills confidence. WHAT’S THE ONE STAGE EXPERIENCE YOU’LL TAKE TO THE GRAVE? Opening for Shihad in the early days of Kora. We were so green. We had to learn the live gig craft real fast touring with Shihad. They’re such an explosive band!

THIS MONTH YOU’RE REVISITING THE 80S WITH THE CSO, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? Timeless Kiwi music! When a song is well written it works under any genre. I’m interested to hear the arrangements. I think there might be a lot of singing from the crowd. WHAT WILL YOU BE DIGGING OUT OF THE BACK OF YOUR CLOSET FOR THE OCCASION? Balloon pants and Kung Fu slippers. WHAT’S YOUR FAVE MEMORY FROM THE 80S? Video game parlours ... and video games. Bruce Lee movies. WE HEAR YOU WERE QUITE THE BREAK DANCER BACK THEN – WHAT WAS YOUR SIGNATURE MOVE? The Hurricane into the 8-Step Crazy Legs. ANY CHANCE OF YOU BUSTING IT OUT ON THE NIGHT? Haha ... no way man!

IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER, 80S SELF SOME ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE? You’re all good cuzz! The school system is not for everyone. Life is way bigger than that. THE LAST TIME WE SAW YOU ON STAGE WITH THE CSO WAS THE DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE AND YOU WERE AFTER A PASH WITH JULIA DEANS, HOW DID THAT WORK OUT FOR YOU? Mass fail! WHAT TRACK ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO PERFORMING ON THE NIGHT? ‘E Ipo’. Grew up with Prince Tui Teka. Reminds me of my Nan down in Wairaka, Whakatane. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT AN ORCHESTRAL ACCOMPANIMENT? Having an orchestral accompaniment. CSO Presents: NZ Music of the 80s, Horncastle Arena, Sep 8, cso.co.nz
