print we marked our 4-year anniversary since the devastating February 22 earthquakes savaged our city. Looking back it’s amazing to see just how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved during this time as our city, homes and lives are rebuilt, regenerated and revitalised. While there is still much to do, together we are working towards an exciting future filled with limitless possibility and opportunity. Recent additions to the city scene include prohibition-style swanky speakeasy Mama Hooch on Colombo Street; it's the brainchild of the talented troop behind Venuti (handily located just down the road). Also new to the neighbourhood is Bodhi Tree sibling Rangoon Ruby, who are rocking their signature Burmese along Colombo Street. Fans of hearty, home-cooked Italian are welcoming Casa Nostra (pictured) to the city’s dining scene. Helmed by

Over on Victoria Street the clock is ticking down to the opening of Castrols Bar & Café, a new venture from the creators of The Serious Sandwich. Seismic tremors of the new kind were felt when perennial pre-quake fave Vesuvio re-erupted at the old Wine Bar site next door to Keo Thai in Carlton Courts. CINÉMAS VÉRITÉ

Good news for Christchurch’s movie hounds – arthouse darling Alice Cinematheque is opening two new boutique cinemas this year. Rekindling the glamour and grandeur of a night at the movies, three-screen offering Rangiora Town Hall Cinemas (complete with café and a fully licensed bar) swings open its lavish doors in early March, while a two screen cinema is also tipped to open at The Tannery complex in Woolston midyear. Alice in Videoland director Jeremy Steward said the new cinemas were part of the famous rental store's move into theatres due to the popularity of movie streaming, and would showcase a mix of arthouse and handselected blockbusters. www.townhallcinemas.co.nz

urban etiquette

AT THE MOVIES If ever there was a place void of common courtesy and decency, it’s the cinema. The lights go down, the movie starts and you settle in for 2 hours of retinadazzling mobile phone screens and furious texting (let’s not forget the occasional call!), incessant rustling, personal space invaders and – the very worst offenders – talkers. Urgh, stop rehashing last night’s dinner or narrating the film/ giving the actors advice! (FYI: a) you are not Morgan Freeman, and b) they can’t hear you!) When entering these hallowed, darkened halls of shared escapism, there are implied rules. Firstly, the no mobiles screener is not there for your health (though texting and taking/making calls during a movie is a great way to lose a couple of teeth). If it’s a spacious screening, stretch out – don’t sit directly in front of, or next to, someone else. Open any excessively packaged snacks during the trailers and advertising. Finally, if arriving late, don’t go interrupting people’s cinema-going experience with the audacity of asking them to move over – suck it up, hit the front row and leave earlier next time!

HIPPY CHIC

South City Mall’s latest and funkiest tenant Halo & Hazard is home to the essentials to wear, love and rock (their words, but we’re totally on board). Visit and you’ll find a signature blend of boho-chic lace, floral, denim, and phenomenal service. Prowl their gorgeous prints and indieinspired jewellery and send summer off in style.

HIGH ROTATION: DEVILISH MARY & THE HOLY ROLLERS We’re lovin’ Lyttelton three-piece Devilish Mary & The Holy Rollers’ longawaited blistering self-titled debut. This fiery audio baptism that weaves western swing with edgy smouldering torch song (by way of David Lynch) is guaranteed to quicken the pulse and heat up any revival tent. Helmed by sirenlike chanteuse Anita Clark and her equally electric cohorts Ben Woolley and Simon Gregory, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a life on the backslide – can we get an Amen? Catch the unholy trio live at Civil & Naval, Dragons Den Social Lounge, Pomeroy's and Volstead Trading Company.

Olé! The Royal New Zealand Ballet goes tilting at windmills in March (11–14) with Don Quixote. Opening their 2015 season "somewhere in La Mancha", the RNZB will perform Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th century tale of adventure, chivalry, love (and a bit of rambling) – one of world literature’s most venerated treasures, and a story that has inspired one of the greatest works in classical ballet. The RNZB’s own production of the work is described as a fiery, flirtatious delight that combines virtuoso choreography with a comic flair that is sure to appeal to all ages. Then in May (28–30), the company returns to the city to present Salute, (pictured) a very special piece created in collaboration with New Zealand composers and choreographers and the New Zealand Army Band to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings. Grab tix from Ticketek for both of these contrasting performances. www.rnzb.org.nz

LATE NIGHT DELIGHTS Taco lovers rejoice: the Mexican maestros at Mexicano’s are now rocking a $5 taco menu from 10pm seven nights a week! Can’t decide between the killer fire-grilled flank steak, tomato, peppers with black olive salsa or the cumin-battered market fish, salsa mojito and coriander? Now you can have both for $10 – bring on the Mex madness! www.mexicanos.co.nz

THE ICONIC: HOLLYWOOD CINEMA Christchurch’s grand dame of movies, the Hollywood Cinema has been plying its trade seaside since 1938. The old girl got things going with 1937 flick Wings of the Morning and has been the home of Sumner cinema ever since, outlasting all of its contemporaries to be the only suburban cinema in the city still standing and running after 80 years of operation. Local legend Lang Masters has helmed the cinema for more than 50 of those years, and visiting Lang’s pride and joy today to catch an arthouse hit or blockbuster at one of the 3 theatres is like taking a delightfully anachronistic trip back in time to when movies meant glamour. The draping curtains, giant Oscar statue and comfy seats recall the heyday of Hollywood (fortunately, not everything needs to be old skool, with state-ofthe-art Dolby sound and high definition picture in place), making going to the movies an occasion again! www.hollywoodcinema.co.nz

FAMILY REUNIONS If there was ever a time for self-medication via over-the-counter sleeping aids and alcohol, or springing the ‘get out of jail free’ card (that unexpected work trip), it’s family reunion time. Learn to sidestep the social landmines and go in with the right headspace though, and you might even enjoy yourself … Sure, you love ‘em – they’re family, right? But there’s generally a reason why you don’t see the extended fam that often outside of non-church-based activities, so when they come together it’s like an apocalyptic alignment of planets. Cramming the familials into one venue and then adding booze unleashes a whole new world of insanity where, two hours in, best behaviour inevitably starts waning and a high-octane meltdown (or two) is suddenly on the cards. Firstly, stay out of the firing line and avoid the fallout. You’re gonna want to roll with the (many) punches – don’t respond to Uncle Tom’s barely-veiled character slurs with equally jacked-up retorts (he’s not fooling anyone with that matted, skew-whiff hairline, so no need to point it out). Go easy on the cans; as much as it seems like a good idea, losing your inhibitions and telling that ballin’ cousin who’s been stunting on you all day what you really think is never going to end well. And remember, unless you’re a Jolie-Pitt, family reunions are lame, so just go with it and have a good time (it’ll be over sooner than you think!).

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU OWN THIS CITY

Bin 5 pieces of clothing you never wore last year (or the year before that!). Go on, rip off that plaster – it won’t hurt a bit!

SOCIAL MEDIA ANXIETY Do you find yourself constantly checking your phone at all hours of the day and night just to keep tabs on the updates of all your “friends” on Facebook and Instagram? If so, chances are you’ve contracted a case of FOMO (fear of missing out), brought on by watching the filtered lives of others and thinking they’re having a better time than you – or, worse, MOMO (mystery of missing out) when you start freaking out if there’s a lull in a prolific poster’s feed – seriously, what could they be doing that’s SO amazing they can’t post about it? Now you’ll never know what they had for lunch. Time to consider a digital detox or mobile diet (switch your phone off for five hours) – you need to avoid adding Liker’s Thumb to your digital medical file!

TAKING OUT THE TRASH

Are you running out of space around the house, but still buying more acquisitions? Is your house starting to look more museumy/ shriney than homely? If so, you could be on the highway to hoarding. So before the family intervention rocks up with the TV cameras rolling, you might wanna consider an access-all-areas decluttering. Sufferers of stuffocation (too much stuff) can often feel anxious, frustrated and out of control, and decluttering brings about the generation of fresh energy, creates physical and mental space and helps chase off negative emotions. Living more with less doesn’t mean getting all Yoko Ono minimalist on your life, but chances are if you haven’t worn or used something (think about all those ‘as seen on TV’ gadgets) in 6 months, then you might not need it. Take baby steps when starting out; combined, small steps will lead to big improvements that will be easier to maintain long-term. Why not join the growing number of people who are trading gathering more possessions for enjoying experiences such as holidays, festivals, the theatre, and spending time with friends? RECLAIMING FAT

why butter’s better After decades of being told to avoid butter because of its saturated fat content, butter is now being hyped as a health food. So what gives? Rich in fat-soluble vitamins including A, E and K2, butter is a natural product, and unlike substitute products with long chemical numbers and colouring codes, it’s easily absorbed by the body. The most easily-absorbed form of vitamin A, butter also helps in the absorption of vitamins and minerals from vegetables when you cook them in it. It’s also filled with antioxidants and Lecithin ... perhaps it’s time to make the switch back?

BOTANICAL MEDICINES With modern medicine born of the natural world, many are now looking beyond computer-aided drug design and back to natural sources – the wild substances that form the basis of our medicine cabinets. The resurgence in using natural tonic herbs to treat the body instead of popping a pill offers a more natural approach to treating ailments (with fewer side effects), while also nourishing and protecting the body and organs. EXPERT ADVICE

What’s hot in Fitness Cityscape tapped the genius of health and fitness consultant and the office personal trainer Jean Scott to find out what we can expect in fitness trends this year. Getting in shape this year is all about going back to basics with bodyweight training. Bodyweight exercises are a simple, highly effective way to improve balance, flexibility, and strength without machinery or weights. From legs and shoulders to chest and abs, every part of the body can get stronger through body resistance alone. What’s more it can be done practically anywhere. Turn your lounge or backyard into your gym and make with the planks, push-ups, squats, pull-ups and ab rolls. I think we will also see an increase in running because it’s so convenient. You can go for a run from home and be back in 30 minutes and back into life. Interval training will still be a big hit. Fast, intense and challenging for a short period. People don’t have the time to exercise for long periods, so they are looking for smarter ways to achieve their goals.

BLOODY MARY’S

It’s a grill house, but not as you know it. Riffing on the classic cocktail and the axe-happy queen, Bloody Mary’s seamlessly blends swank and sophistication into a lavish yet unpretentious bar/lounge (whiskey lounge, by the way!)/restaurant. It’s no ordinary slashie; buttery leather meets broody dark timber, a glittering top shelf, killer cocktail list and Canterbury’s (and a little further afield) finest produce. Key to the menu is the heaven-sent Canterbury prime angus, 21-day aged, grass fed, bone-in 700g rib eye (pictured). If you’re going to lose your head over a steak, this is the place to do it. www.bloodymarys.co.nz

DECONSTRUCTING… The Herb Centre’s Quinoa and Roasted Vegetable Patty

TWO OF A KIND Our autumn pairing pitches the fiery goodness of Chorizos Garcia’s award-winning Hot Fresh Chorizo with West Coast wonder Glasseye Creek Wild Meat Sauce. The Pairing: If truth be told, Chorizos Garcia’s legendary snags need little help in the flavour stakes and are perfect with a cold beer or red wine. Bursting with free-range pork and Spain’s finest paprika, we cooked the chorizo in cider to balance its earthy, smoky goodness with a little acid and bring out the natural sweetness. While this was perfection on the palate, adding a tangy kick of Wild Meat Sauce jacked the flav-omoter off the chart.

How did you get into horseradish sauce? I have been Cityscape catches up with making horseradish sauce for about 10 years now. I joined Mandys Horseradish forces with another Mandy (hence the name), who was in whisperer Mandy Steel. possession of an old family recipe. After 4 years I bought her out. Best thing about your job? When I get great feedback from my customers and renowned chefs it puts a smile on my face and justifies the effort. Fave way to enjoy your sauce? Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and a big dollop of horseradish sauce! I can’t eat salmon without horseradish either. One thing people probably don’t know about horseradish? The colder the soil is, the hotter the horseradish is! Horseradish has many medicinal qualities, such as boosting the immune and circulatory systems and fighting colds. Brag files? A highlight so far would be winning a Cuisine Artisan Award. What’s next – world domination? Of course! We’ll need many more acres of horseradish for that to happen; maybe I’ll start with Australia first … www.horseradish.co.nz

It was a mad obsession that drove local boy Sam Hooper back to Christchurch earlier this year with a mission to serve Cantabrians the best dumplings in the land. He set out to match the best of Kiwi attitude with traditional Chinese dumpling-making methods... and his team are nailing it. Pot Sticker is the street name for pan-fried dumplings, although at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar you can also have your dumplings steamed. What you won’t get are pre-made dumplings from a machine. Everything is handmade with an obsession for detail and quality. Norman, the dumpling master, hand-makes the dumpling dough, chops all the locally sourced vegetables and herbs, and selects the free-range meat on a daily basis using techniques learned through his 30 years of dumpling-making in Shanghai. Even the MSG-free chili sauce is handmade using a recipe passed down from generation to generation. The team obsess over dumplings day and night behind the glass wall at Pot Sticker under the watchful eye of the dumpling master. If you’re as serious about eating legendary dumplings, then head down and watch them experimenting with new flavours, including their famous Dessert Wonton.

SAY ‘CHEESE’

Any great smile needs to be healthy and strong, with a focus on healthy gums and strong, decay-free teeth. Sexy smiles require stunning straight white teeth with no gaps (unless you’re a pirate) and definitely no smelly bad breath! By brushing your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, flossing every day and maintaining regular 6-month visits to a dental hygienist for properly supervised prevention technology, whitening and gum treatment and cleaning, you’ll help maintain that fresh, brilliant white smile. Don’t like opening your mouth to reveal old amalgam fillings or missing teeth? Help is at hand: consider having older fillings replaced with bonded tooth-coloured fillings – your dentist will use the most appropriate and effective white fillings and crown materials to suit the application, while spaces and gaps can be fixed with bridges and modern implants to complete your perfect smile. www.smileco.co.nz

SAFE AS HOUSES: PROPERTY INVESTMENT 101 Cityscape caught up with Harcourts property guru Mary Turnbull for the lowdown on investing in property. What’s the local investment property market like? It’s an attractive market for both seasoned and novice investors as there’s a lot of property available, giving the investor the chance to buy well. Interest rates remain low and the outlook for the city is extremely positive both from an immigration and rebuild perspective. If you add these elements together it’s definitely a good time to consider investing, and I believe this climate will be maintained for the next 18 – 24 months. What are the key considerations? Potential investors need to build their confidence, and this centres around accurately establishing the return a property would give you prior to purchase, maintaining that figure if possible, and being able to shoulder changes such as interest rates increasing. They also need to be comfortable with the location they purchase in, remembering that this will also determine what sort of tenants they

will attract. What should first time investors look out for? The biggie is not doing their homework about the property, area, returns and requirements of being a landlord. Where are the hot locations? Real estate is all about location, location, location. The north/west of Christchurch has always been a safe area for investors, meaning it holds its value and attracts quality tenants. Apartment or house? There are different appetites for different investors. Investing in both houses and apartments is popular. It is important to know what you are getting yourself into, as apartments can often have additional costs – for example, body corporate fees and rules which may not appeal to everyone. What yield percentage

should be aimed for? This all depends on the investor’s strategy, whether it is focused on cash flow or capital gain in the future. There are a lot of properties in the market that have a gross yield between 5 – 7 per cent. Anything above this is a complete bonus. Generally higher returns have higher risk. For example, ‘as is where is’ uninsured properties can offer a higher yield; however this comes with higher risk. Property manager or DIY? This is a personal choice; however, there is a benefit in using property managers, as they are experts in looking after landlords, maintaining their rights and obligations just as they do for tenants. That role can be difficult when handled personally. www.maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz

66 Victoria Street, Central City 03 366 6948 www.palazzokitchens.co.nz Open: Mon – Fri 9am – 5:30pm, Sat/Sun 10am – 4pm

What started over 10 years ago in Christchurch has developed into an exemplary story of national success. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances have experienced overwhelming growth in the past few years. Today’s designer kitchens are sleek and refined, delivering beautiful living spaces that seamlessly integrate function with comfort. Victoria Street Branch Manager Charlotte Neale says “kitchens are the new living spaces – a space for enjoying time with family and friends”. The living-room-style design introduces an unconventional mix of styles and exquisite materials. Amalgamating classic style and modern elements into one kitchen helps break the barriers to complete the perfect open plan living space. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances use of the very latest in European technologies from Germany is seen as the basis of their continuing development and growth. “Made in Germany” is not simply a slogan, but incorporates a true commitment to quality. Pieta Fletcher, Senior Designer, notes that at Palazzo they determine “the look, the functionality and the specifics” (such as appliances) that you want in your kitchen. When they produce a photo-style image for you, the design is as realistic as possible. They then go through the design with you, adding adjustments and accessories as necessary. Palazzo offer two German-made kitchen brands, Nobilia and Rational. “I enjoy designing and selling kitchens from the Nobilia range as there’s a style to suit everyone’s taste and budget” says Sarah Humphreys, Senior Designer. Kitchen Designer Emily Erickson adds that Nobilia is able to achieve high-performance production, delivering unique, high quality kitchen furniture to over 2,600 homes every day. Palazzo also specialise in Rational Kitchen Furniture, which has been available in New Zealand for over 20 years. Rational are the masters of colour and style – their stunning range pairs strong, contemporary colours, available in the most beautiful gloss & matt lacquers, with unique and interesting layouts – blurring the boundaries between kitchens & furniture is what gives Rational “their luxury edge”, says Senior Kitchen Designer Monique Enoka. In Victoria Street you will find a highly qualified kitchen design team, an array of full kitchen displays, appliances, bench tops, sinks, taps, splashbacks, kitchen lighting and other accessories. Palazzo offer a totally free, no-obligation kitchen design service that utilises the latest European design software, allowing you to see your new kitchen in as lifelike a form as possible. READ, WATCH LISTEN Reviews, profiles and celebrity insider goss READ The Secret History of Wonder Woman, Jill Lepore. Review by Jo Hewitson, Scorpio Books. In The Secret History of Wonder Woman, Jill Lepore restores the most popular female superhero of all time to her rightful place as an essential women’s rights icon in this dynamically researched and interpreted, spectacularly illustrated, downright astounding work of discovery that injects new zest into the history of feminism. RRP $55

LISTEN X, Ed Sheeran. Review by Garry Knight, Pennylane Records. Pronounced ‘multiply’, X is the second album released by English-born singer/songwriter, Ed Sheeran. Having sold 4 times platinum in New Zealand already and with Ed’s tour here in April sold out, it’s showing no signs of slowing up. Sheeran has had an incredible last 12 months and his relentless touring has kept him at the top of the charts. X is full of great songs jam-packed with sing-a-long choruses, brilliant songwriting and clever and catchy lyrics which have given him hit after hit. The killer radio tracks ‘Sing’ (produced by music’s man of the moment Pharell Williams), ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and ‘Don’t’ are the singles so far, with plenty more to come – a brilliant album, and a must for any collection.

WATCH The Lunchbox. Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. A good old-fashioned romance that has charmed cinema audiences worldwide, The Lunchbox sees a mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connect a young and lonely housewife, Ila (Nimrat Kaur), to the older man Saajan (Irrfan Khan). Saajan sends back a note to state the mistake but thank her for the food regardless. However, his love for her food comes as a surprise to Ila, who is more accustomed to her thankless husband, and she decides to keep sending the lunch box for Saajan. The two begin exchanging notes and soon they reveal more to each other through their correspondence than they would to anyone else.

Dream JoB Aussie funnywoman Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect) was all set for a career in law until she got bitten by a pesky mosquito. During a year in South Africa as a Rotary International Youth Ambassador, Wilson contracted malaria from the bug’s bite, and during one of her feverish hallucinations imagined herself accepting an Oscar. Taking it as a sign, when she got better she switched the Ally McBeal studies for a spot at the Australian Theatre for Young People, won the Nicole Kidman Scholarship and never looked back.

CINEPHILES: BATTLE STAR Rebooting a franchise (or making a sequel, even) can be a long, hard road – just ask the team behind legendary Aussie road warrior hit Mad Max, which returns to the silver screen in May following a 30-year hiatus. Spending 25 years in “development hell”, original director George Miller and writer Nick Lathouris’ labour of love Mad Max: Fury Road has been plagued with problems, including original Mad Max Mel Gibson chucking in his leathers in 2000. But it’s not all bad news for the filmmakers; they managed to snag Hollywood heavyweights Tom Hardy (Warrior) and Charlize Theron (Monster) for the lead roles in their futuristic apocalyptic lawless nightmare.

BEETHOVEN’S BACK Following the popularity of its Beethoven concert series last year, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will turn to the evergreen German once again to kick off their 2015 touring programme, this time tackling some of Ludwig’s piano concertos with the assistance of British virtuoso Freddy Kempf. Renowned for his outstanding musicianship and charismatic, physically dramatic performance style, Kempf is making his fourth trip to New Zealand, and was described on his last visit to these shores as having “the slickness of a cheetah on the keys”. Kempf and the NZSO will present the well-loved Emperor Piano Concerto No. 5 and the fiery drama of the Third Piano Concerto, with the musician switching the piano for a baton (which is considerably easier to pick up and wave around) to conduct the orchestra through the Egmont Overture. The arty feel flows through from the art studio into the art-inspired café. Picture abstractly painted tables, inspiring wall art, and their amazing coffee cup mural!

Open every Sunday wet or fine, Riccarton Market is the most established and vibrant market in Canterbury. The market has over 200 stalls covering fresh fruit and veges, certified organic produce, flowers, plants, antiques, clothing, arts and crafts, books and much, much more. There’s something for everyone! The market also offers a food court, and features local talent on stage each week.

Step back in time at Ferrymead Heritage Park, with a leisurely stroll down a 1920s street portraying a church, school and police house and jail alongside the bakery, general store, lawyer, cinema and printer. Enjoy the fun and excitement of rides on steam trains and electric trams. Steam trains run on the FIRST Sunday of each month. Electric trams run at the park 7 days every week. Hot and cold food and drinks available on weekends and during school holidays.
