This month’s interview An interview with Hema Nana of Ngolide Lodge in Livingstone

This month, Julia Brown, Operations Director for the Best of Zambia was in Livingstone. She took the opportunity to interview one of our Livingstone clients and give Nambeye a rest from her duties! JULIA: Hema, you’re a very busy lady. Thank you for setting aside time to talk to us. You have a beautiful lodge and restaurant – Ngolide. When did you start to build this ‘haven of tranquillity’ in Livingstone? HEMA: Well, in 1996 this place was just an empty plot on Mosi-Oa-Tunya Road in Livingstone, owned by my late father-in-law. It happens to be next to Zambia Revenue Authority, and he built the original structure as accommodation for the truckers who were clearing freight there.

4

But in 1998 he transformed it into accommodation suitable for tourists, replacing the iron sheets with thatch. That is when my husband and I first got involved. The lodge opened for business in October 1998, one of the first lodges in Livingstone to offer accommodation for tourists. So basically Ngolide Lodge was my late father-in-law’s vision and we have been able to keep that vision alive and grow it.

JULIA: That is fascinating. What do you consider to be the key aspects of Ngolide that make it stand out amongst the other places in Livingstone? HEMA: The lodge has experienced a number of changes over the years and is constantly growing. In 2001 we added the Indian Restaurant on the original Lodge site, recruiting a chef from India. Eventually a Zambian chef took over after learning the art of the

preparation of Indian food from the original Indian chefs; he is with us to this day. Interestingly enough he was originally one of the thatchers!

Over the years we felt that the restaurant needed to be more accessible to the general public and last October we opened the Golden Leaf Restaurant on the main road opposite the lodge. The original restaurant within the lodge now just serves breakfast for lodge guests. All other meals are served at the Golden Leaf Restaurant which is gaining a reputation for its authentic Indian food and becoming increasingly popular. I think the main advantage for guests is the convenience of its location compared to other accommodation providers in Livingstone. It is close to two modern shopping malls and the town of Livingstone, with its banks, museum, souvenir stalls and local markets. Guests can easily walk to any of these places, or get a local taxi. And the famous Victoria Falls are only a few kilometres away. In addition, we provide quality accommodation at a very fair price, a good service and last but not least an authentic Indian cuisine which consistently gets great reviews.

Australia, as well as in Zambia. I also have a sister in Hong Kong. We have two children – a boy who’s now nine and a girl who’s seven. Travelling opens up their world, and I wanted them to learn to adapt in any situation. I also love organising events and family gatherings as I’m a people person. JULIA: Could you tell us a bit more about your family and whether you are originally from Zambia? HEMA: My parents came to Zambia from India and settled here. I was born in Zambia but I grew up in England and went to university there. My husband’s family have been in Zambia for several generations and he was born here too. I met my husband in England and after we got married my husband persuaded me to return to Zambia and we have lived here ever since.

JULIA: The lodge and restaurant seem to keep you pretty busy! What other passions or pastimes do you have?

JULIA: Zambia seems to be such a big part of you. Do you see yourself and your family ever leaving Zambia?

HEMA: Well our family loves travelling and we do a lot of that. We’re a very cosmopolitan family with friends and family in India, the UK, USA and

HEMA: Only for our children’s education. Otherwise we’ll stay on here as far as we can see at the moment.

JULIA: Zambia is currently booming. What is your opinion of where Zambia will be in five years’ time?

HEMA: I think Zambia will still be growing but perhaps not at the same rate as it is now. It still has a lot of potential, a long way to go, compared to Europe. JULIA: On a final note, what would you say was your most memorable experience related to the lodge? HEMA: Probably the opening night of the original restaurant at Ngolide Lodge. We invited a lot of people to experience the food and the atmosphere, and my friend’s husband gave a very encouraging speech. We had worked hard to get that far. It was a very successful evening and the beginning of a new and exciting phase for us. JULIA: What an interesting story you have. Thank you for sharing and we wish you all the best for the future.

— Staff news and opinions An uphill struggle - what it takes to be mighty fortunate

In a previous issue we mentioned the Best of Zambia was importing cars to help us get around to all our clients. Finally last week three of the four Rav4s reached Lusaka and the last one is on the high seas (after being left behind at the UK port). It’s been quite a saga getting them here as we faced one testing challenge after another – from a car going missing to the money we prepaid to our agent for duty mysteriously disappearing. The whole experience has brought home to me how much more difficult things are for businesses in Zambia than those in say, UK. Not only do vehicles have to be imported, but because Zambia is so far from a car manufacturing country, they have to be brought in at great cost. I’ve just done the math. The total importation and duty costs we paid were about the same as the price of the vehicles, making our vehicle costs double those a UK business would have to bear. We spent a total of two weeks in Livingstone getting the cars cleared. Since we had our American nephew with us (pictured on Livingstone Island), we took a morning trip to Livingstone Island courtesy of Tongabezi Lodge. As we ate breakfast on the island, we chatted with fellow trippers from Belgium. They had spent three weeks in Africa – most of their time in Namibia – just coming over the border to Zambia for the day to visit the Victoria Falls. It reminded me of

6

the tourists who fly into Livingstone Airport and are immediately whisked away to Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe. It reminded me too of the announcements at a certain large Southern African airport which imply that the Victoria Falls are part of South Africa! It struck me that Zambia loses out on so much tourism business, despite having this major World Heritage site within its borders.

However, we know that there’s nothing like adversity to make us strong. Zambia is growing slowly but surely. My hope is that successfully overcoming the challenges the country faces will lead to more success. As the Bible puts it “Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate.” (James 1.12 MSG)

Allergies: Chronic sinusitis Eggs The pea family including peanuts and soybean Citrus fruits Tomatoes Grains including corn and wheat Cinnamon and other spices Artificial food colours Strawberries.

Allergies are often more than just a rash or runny nose. Allergies are the number one cause of chronic disease according to the American Family Physician. Here are 14 tips on how to avoid allergies like sinusitis: 1. Avoid, as much as possible, any chemical that touch the skin including soaps, lotions, cosmetics, detergents, nail polish, costume jewellery containing nickel sulphate, medicines, dyes, etc). 2. Avoid breathing in anything that has an odour except natural vegetation. Examples include gasoline, aerosols, cosmetics and perfumes. 3. All drugs and medicines, vaccines, venoms, moulds, fungi, bacteria, and insects can cause allergies. 4. Elastic in clothing, nylon, and other synthetics are a frequent cause of allergies and should touch the skin as little as possible. Cotton clothing is best. 5. Chilling of extremities, especially the ankles and backs of arms, is the cause of much chronic sinusitis. Cool or cold skin anywhere on the body is abnormal. 6. Overeating and evening meals aggravate chronic sinusitis. Chew food to a cream before swallowing to prevent fermentation. Use only two or three dishes at a meal with bread to avoid a “war inside. 7. The use of sweets, milk, and too many concentrated or heavy foods (nuts, wheat germ, and even bread) can make sinusitis worse. The 10 foods that most commonly cause allergies are: Dairy products (over 60% of all food allergies) Chocolate, colas, coffee and tea

8. Fast for one or two days per week. Remember to drink 8-10 glasses of water on fast days. 9. Apply hot water compresses (for three minutes) and cold compresses (for 30 seconds) to the sinus areas of the face four times a day for the first week, and once daily thereafter, until the sinusitis has cleared. 10. Do regular deep breathing exercises. 11. Have three to four olives with all meals for three weeks. 12. Take six charcoal tablets twice a day for about a week (take them mid-morning and mid-afternoon). 13. Take a one hour walk daily with your head up, shoulders back and down whilst breathing deeply. 14. Eliminate emotional pain and bitterness from your thoughts. Train the mind to dwell on heavenly themes. Prevention is always better than cure. If you would like to know more, contact the Riverview Wellness Centre.
