Welcome Newcomers! Calvert County, the smallest county in Southern Maryland, has been one of the fastest growing counties in the state for the last few decades. This growth is partially due to the county’s location in the Greater Washington Area, the expansion of operations at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Lexington Park, St. Mary’s County and the county’s outstanding quality of life. Located only 46 miles from Washington, D.C., it retains its rural character and agrarian roots, offering good schools, a clean environment and good quality of life. Calvert is a peninsula, bounded by the Chesapeake Bay on the east and the Patuxent River on the west. Steep cliffs and woods predominate on the bay side while along the Patuxent, rolling fields slip gently down to the river. The county’s many creeks provide refuge for wildlife as well as scenic areas for boating and fishing. Containing approximately 219 square miles, the county is 9 miles at its widest point, and 35 miles from the Anne Arundel line to Solomons. Prince Frederick, the county seat, is located 35 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., and 55 miles south of Baltimore. There are two incorporated towns in Calvert County, North Beach and Chesapeake Beach, located on the bay at the northeast corner of the county. In addition, the Comprehensive Plan identifies seven town centers. These include (from north to south) Dunkirk, Owings, Huntingtown, Prince Frederick, St. Leonard, Lusby and Solomons. The topography of Calvert County is variable and rugged. An upland plain runs generally in a northwest-southwest direction and forms the central spine of the county. On the Chesapeake Bay side, the upland terminates in high cliffs of clay, gravel and sand rising from the shoreline to maximum heights of 125 to 135 feet. These cliffs are famous for the prehistoric fossils and sharks teeth that have been found in them. On the west, the upland areas slope toward the Patuxent River forming a level terrace commonly called “bottom land” and boasting some of the best farmland in the county.

Students have access at the Prince Frederick Campus to specialized classrooms for art, physics, biology, chemistry and nursing with expanded offerings in arts and science programs. The college also offers an expanded Kids’ and Teen College, driver education training and a growing selection of personal enrichment courses. Students enjoy an enlarged student center, library and an activity room that features student artwork and a handcrafted Bösendorfer Grand Piano, the centerpiece of the college’s Ward Virts Concert Series donated by the Ward Virts Piano Project for use in college and community events including the annual Southern Maryland Regional Piano competition. CSM prepares its students for transfer to a four-year college, and more than 52 percent of CSM credit students enroll in transfer programs. In the past two years, more than 2,300 CSM students transferred to almost 250 universities in 45 states. Throughout its history, the college has extended its services to meet the higher education needs of its students, including linked bachelor-degree programs with numerous partnering colleges and universities. These include the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program with University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), which provides early access to UMCP advisers and other resources. The partnership will develop the framework for interaction between CSM students and faculty, area elementary, middle and high school students and teachers and NAWCAD scientists and mentors. The initiative identifies students with an interest in science while they are in elementary school, and will provide learning and internship opportunities for them through college. CSM partners with other higher education and navel organizations such as the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center and the Naval Air Warfare Center aircraft division to establish aerospace and mechanical engineering bachelor of science degree programs in Southern Maryland. CSM facilitates workforce development and a strong connection to the region’s business community through its Corporate Center. Calvert County, through the Public Transportation Division of the Department of Community Resources, serves the transportation needs of the general public, as well as the elderly and persons with disabilities. The county provides a deviated and fixed route system Monday through Friday with limited service on Saturday to link residents with shopping, medical and employment, as well as with public services available in Prince Frederick. Calvert County operates four deviated fixed routes that run from Prince Frederick to St. Leonard, Broomes Island, and Adelina; Prince Frederick Shuttle Service; Lusby, Solomons, Chesapeake Ranch Estates Shuttle Service. There are two fixed routes that run from Prince Frederick to Solomon’s and Prince Frederick to North Beach and Chesapeake Beach. There are four demand response routes that operate Monday through Friday within the county, one between Prince Frederick and destinations to the north; one between

There a total of 12 buses leaving Lower Pindell Road park and ride; Bristol park and ride; Wayson Corner park and ride and the Prince George’s County Equestrian Center park and ride. These buses make stops throughout the city and connect with the Metro system for rides into Montgomery County and Northern Virginia. This service operates Monday through Friday. Drum Point Lighthouse
Located at Calvert Marine Museum. Constructed in 1883 at Drum Point to mark the entrance to the Patuxent River, this screw pile cottage-type light is one of only three remaining from 45 that once served the Chesapeake Bay at the beginning of the 20th century. Decommissioned in 1962, the light-house has been beautifully restored, complete with furnishings of the early 20th century.
