This year, the Charles County Arts Alliance is celebrating the 22nd anniversary of its first ArtsFest! The Arts Alliance, founded in 1987, spearheaded the first countywide all-day festival of the arts in 1992, called “A Touch of the Arts,” and it was held indoors at the St. Charles Towne Center mall in Waldorf. In 1998, the arts festival was moved outdoors to quaint Cobb Island, and it was renamed the “Island Artsfest.” Then in 2001, the festival again was on the move, this time to the western part of the county — to the beautiful Village Green in Indian Head, and spent 10 years there, as "River Artsfest." In 2012, ArtsFest moved to the center of Charles County, and the county seat, La Plata. So over the past 21 years the Arts Alliance’s arts festivals have been held in the north, south, west and center of Charles County, in order to be easily accessible to adults, children and families everywhere, both in the population center and in underserved areas of the county. These ArtsFests have become annual events that the citizens of Charles County and all of Southern Maryland look forward to each year. They celebrate ALL the arts and talented artists of our region: in music, visual art, drama, dance and litera-

About the Artist Mary Wilmoth Our official artwork for ArtsFest 2014 is “Paint Brushes” by local artist Mary Wilmoth. Color, form and line fascinate Ms. Wilmoth. For many years she explored them through cloth and thread in the form of quilting and needlework. Painting is the continuation of that exploration through the use of pigment and brushes. Her artwork, “Paint Brushes,” is fresh, modern, and strikingly beautiful. We love it!

CHARLES COUNTY ARTS ALLIANCE

T

he mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit. Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County: music, visual art, drama, dance, and literature. The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland. In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County. The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's underserved population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities and senior citizens have access to the arts. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, the CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County. The CCAA receives funding in part through grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Charles County Government, memberships, and corporate, business, and individual donations. For more information, please call us at 301-392-5900 or visit our website at: www.charlescountyarts.org.

PORT TOBACCO PLAYERS

T

he Port Tobacco Players continues their 65th year of providing live theater in Charles County! This all volunteer group formed in 1947 and performed their first play in 1948. Participation is open to anyone who has an interest in theater. The actors and technical crew are populated primarily from the residents of the area. The Players perform in their own theater at 508 Charles Street in La Plata, Maryland. The theater has been completely renovated, allowing for seating for three hundred people, a large performance stage, a fly system permitting scenes to be changed quickly, and an orchestra pit with space for twenty musicians. The players produce six shows each season. Additionally, there are special performances throughout the year including the upcoming children's show, "Winnie the Pooh" this summer. A season typically consists of a mixture of musicals, comedies and dramas in an attempt to offer something for everyone. This summer we offer the family musical "The Music Man". Most shows are suitable for all family members, check the website for details about the shows. In addition to the main stage shows, the Players sponsor the Encore Adults, who have been performing at local nursing homes for the past 30 years and the Encore Kids with members between the ages of six and twelve. The kids perform for audiences throughout the county. The youth learn invaluable theatre skills involving stage presence, auditioning, acting and choreography. Venues include the County Fair, the Town of La Plata, nursing homes, the Festival of Trees, Arts Fest, community centers, and the Andrews Air Force Base annual Christmas Party for Children. For reservations and more information, call 301-932-6819 or visit our website at www.ptplayers.org.

Special Events! DAYTIME STAR PARTY & A WALK THROUGH THE SOLAR SYSTEM Southern Maryland Astronomical Society 12:00 to 6:00 pm East Lawn

Join the Southern Maryland Astronomical Society (SMAS) at ArtsFest 2014 and enjoy learning about the “art and science” of astronomy. SMAS is presenting a Daytime Star Party! Throughout the day, the volunteer members of SMAS will provide safe solar observing of sunspots and solar prominences, using a variety of specialized telescopes. Here’s your unique chance to explore firsthand the fascinating world of astronomy during the daytime. Please note that solar observing is weather permitting only. An extra-special treat at this year’s ArtsFest is A Walk Through the Solar System. The public is invited to take a nice stroll on the East Lawn through large scale models of all the planets in our Solar System. They are specifically arranged to provide an accurate approximation of size and distance. Our amazing Solar System may surprise you! Founded in 1994, SMAS is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), organization comprised of individuals interested in amateur astronomy. It promotes the science of astronomy through various outreach programs, encourages and coordinates activities of amateur astronomical societies, fosters observational and computational work and craftsmanship in various fields of astronomy, and correlates amateur activities with professional research. SMAS is based in Nanjemoy in Charles County, and operates the Nanjemoy Creek Observatory, located at the Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education Center.

STORY TIME WITH SHIRLEY PEREZ

YOGA ON THE LAWN 8:00 am – West Lawn Back by popular demand, the Charles County Arts Alliance presents “Yoga on the Lawn” at ArtsFest 2014! We invite the citizens of Southern Maryland to come practice ‘the art of yoga’ with us in a beautiful outdoor lawn setting. Everyone is welcome to join us — both experienced yoga students as well as beginners of all ages who are curious and would like to try yoga for the very first time. The West Lawn can accommodate hundreds of people, so let’s fill up the lawn with yogis and yoginis! What a great way to greet the day before ArtsFest 2014 kicks off at 12:00 noon.

This is a truly unique opportunity for anyone of any age and ability who would like to begin the new day with some sun salutations and a series of easy but effective yoga stretches, breathing exercises, and poses. Our 60-minute yoga session can really help you warm-up the muscles, lubricate the joints, strengthen the bones, stimulate the senses, calm the mind, and create an overall feeling of well-being and peace! No prior yoga experience is necessary to participate — remember, there is no peer-pressure and competition in the practice of yoga. In yoga, you are honoring yourself and your body, working with it, not against it. No matter what your current physical condition, yoga can help! Yoga is easily understood and accessible to students of all ages: children, adults, seniors — even couples. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning “union” and it is a centuries-old

discipline that unites movement with breath, and in so doing, also unites the body, mind, and spirit. Through careful stretching and deep breathing come increased flexibility and self-awareness. Interested? Please join us! No one is too young, too old, or too inexperienced for yoga. Be sure to wear cool, casual, comfortable clothes, and bring a blanket, beach towel, or yoga mat. Our “Yoga on the Lawn” free yoga lesson will be presented on the West Lawn by certified Integral Yoga© Teacher Anne Machetto of Newburg. She is also a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) at the 500-hour level and a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. And she is a talented Charles County visual artist as well! Plan to arrive a few minutes before 8:00 am so we can register you. See you on the West Lawn!

1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm Meet at the Front Portico Steps La Plata Town Hall

The Charles County Arts Alliance is very pleased to present, “Story Time with Shirley Perez” at ArtsFest 2014! Since its inception in 1987, the Arts Alliance has strongly supported the literary arts, in addition to the performing arts and visual arts in Charles County. We have nurtured and promoted many emerging and established local authors over the past 27 years, and helped to spearhead Charles County’s first literary journal, Potomac Review. During ArtsFest 2014, our featured “celebrity author” is Shirley A. Perez of Waldorf. Mrs. Perez is delighted to be reading aloud her very first book, Big Nose. Book readings will take place at 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 5:00 pm. Please meet at the front portico steps of the La Plata Town Hall. Be sure to bring your kids and the young-at-heart to this unique opportunity to “meet the author” face-to-face, and to hear a wonderful story told by the writer herself! Copies of Big Nose will be available for purchase and signing by Mrs. Perez throughout the day. Mrs. Perez has been interested in writing children’s stories since Junior High School. She remembers her very first story about an Easter bunny written in 8th grade. The desire to write followed her into adulthood, and she knew this would be the dream she would pursue in her retirement. Soon after retiring from the Federal Government, she began writing the story of a little girl name Myrtle. Happy little Myrtle became very sad because of teasing from her sister and classmates about her big nose, but with the help of her friend Josh, she learns to love herself just the way she is. Mrs. Perez is a wife, mother, and stepmother. She and her husband of 32 years have five children, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She was born and educated in Washington, D.C., and is a third-generation Washingtonian. As a young adult, she relocated to Maryland, and she and her husband currently live in Waldorf. Mrs. Perez retired from the Federal Government in 2009 after 37 plus years of dedicated service.

JUST FOR KIDS! “HANDS-ON” ART TENT & BIG ART CUBE 12:00 to 6:00 pm -- East Lawn It’s baaaaack! Our annual tradition at every ArtsFest is to have a special Kids Art Tent with cool things to do and make throughout the day! It’s an opportunity for children to explore their creativity and imagination, and have great fun with a wide variety of hands-on art activ-

ities. And they can express themselves even further by boldly painting the large wooden Big Art Cube with their favorite colors and designs! The Kids Art Tent activities are being led by local visual artists Sue Belmore of Bel Alton, and Lorina Harris of Bryans Road. Sue has been an art teacher for many years in Charles County, and currently teaches at T.C. Martin Elementary School, and Lorina is the owner of Art Smart Studio and current member of the Board of Directors of the Charles County Arts Alliance. Our special thanks to the Town of La Plata for loaning us their large tent and wonderful Big Art Cube again this year. Look for the Kids Art Tent and Big Art Cube to the left of the La Plata Town Hall, on the East Lawn near the entrance to ArtsFest 2014!

WHAT WE DO

• Education: Plant rain gardens • Restoration: Divert polluted water from river

PTRC envisions that the Port Tobacco River and its 30,000-acre watershed • Outreach: Test water clarity will be in a nearly pristine condition, as it was in the 1950s. The river will have clear and navigable waters, be rich in fish and wildlife, and be safe for the thousands of residents and visitors who use the river and streams for swimming, water sports, and hunting and fishing, or just enjoy the beauty of this natural and historical resource.

GOALS

• Be an advocate for the Port Tobacco River and its watershed. • Improve water quality so the river is safe for public use, and the ecosystems of the river and watershed are protected and restored. • Improve public outreach and education.
