RE-THINKING URBAN HOUSING

Entry for Archiprix 2013 Project: Proposal Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

[FUTURE]

How can Asia accommodate two thirds of the world population in the year 2050 when more than half of the total population will be living in urban areas? Particularly, in ASEAN countries, the projection of urbanization is upward. High density pressure, low quality housing, land shortage, traffic congestion, lack of green space and urban sprawl will put a great pressure on the main cities in each of the countries. Likewise, Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, will be encountering the same problems. “Re-Thinking Urban Housing” will offer better alternative living units in dense cities. Many amenities such as inviting communal spaces, vertical urban farms, interactive corridors, mini-mart and sky park, are proposed to encourage social interaction, leisure, recreation and to generate some profit. Therefore, “Re-Thinking Urban Housing” is the most visionary solution to those aforementioned challenges of rapid urbanization in Phnom Penh and the ASEAN countries as a whole.

The arrangement of the Jenga is more than aesthetic; it is also a response to the site analysis of the existing micro-climate. The building is sustainable since we have taken advantage of the unforgiving tropical climate by minimizing heat gain; maximizing use of natural light and ventilation. The fundamental elements in the proposed building are minimal footprint, water conservation, energy saving, cross-ventilation, daily necessities and communal spaces. Open Ground Level

Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Although Koh Pich Island serves many dif ferent purposes, wedding hall is one of the most famous functions. suitable products for exhibition. Cultural Pavilion is served as an ex hibition hall for Khmer traditional clothes and fashionable clothes which are made by Cambodian local material-silk. Moreover, a cafe shop is also included as one of the functions.

RECLAIM URBAN LAND

Situated along the National Highway 2, the corridor on the strip of land between Tompum Lake and the Bassac River is one of the busiest highways in the region, because it is the only road to travel from Phnom Penh to Ta khmao. More importantly, according to Mr. Vann Molyvann, one of the most respectful Cambodian architects, Phnom Penh city will develop toward this site. Due to rapid growth of city population, urban sprawl is inevitable. However, as the city expands, more land will be needed for many different building types especially residential buildings and commercial buildings. This may lead to the infill of surrounding wetlands in the study site. Meanwhile, the development will also interrupt city’s sewage treatment and vegetable production in that area by conserving the wetlands.

There should be more roads to access to riverfront in order to give local dwellers opportunities to take advantage of beautiful views of waterfront and fresh air from the river. This public park will be a popular place where people in that neighborhood could relax and do exercise like jogging, cycling, dancing aerobic etc to increase their quality of life. It may attract Phnom Penh and Ta Khmao dwellers as well. I propose to open one pedestrian bridge to waterfront every 1 kilometer. The park will offset 20 meters from the riverside and the existing housing along that which mostly are slum will be replaced with park along the river. Proposed Bus Stop System Food Node

For Topical Shophouse, only ground floor is used to run the bussiness. Some of the upper floors are left unused. More importantly, such shophouse does not have enough lighting and ventilation. Therefore, new commercial building type is proposed to give alternative business area.

Shading Device Model

Recycle for Multi-function Furniture

It is true that shading device design is absolutely imporant for a building. It plays an important role in lessen the direct sunlight in the building. However, most of the time, the designers totally depend on the stimulation of shading from the 3ds modeling in the computer, which is believed to be an accurate calculation. In the project, I have design a shading that consists of both vertical and horizontal shading panels, in order to compare the shade between the real model and the shades on 10am, 12pm and 2 pm.

According to my observation, it can be seen that sun orientation at 10am , 12pm and 2pm give similar shade to the model as it is stimulated by comit does not allow the direct sunlight into the building. More importantly, only the sun orientation on August to the model that taken in December. Obviously there is an error in Computer modeling for shading.
