OVERVIEW It is our honor, on behalf of the Harvard Arab Alumni Association, MENA organizations across campus, and the Arab student body to welcome you all to the eighth Harvard Arab Weekend (HAW), taking place at Harvard University from the 6 – 9 of November, 2014. As the largest pan-Arab conference in North America, the Harvard Arab Weekend has prided itself on showcasing a mosaic of perspectives and insights on the most pressing issues in the Arab world. In constructing a narrative of the Arab World, the discussion is often divided into one of crisis and another of culture. The crisis is political, social and economic, while the cultural discussion delves into our history of creativity, intellectual pursuit, and heritage. Reality, of course, is much more complex than a simple division. Reality is the product of numerous internal and external factors, factors that arise from the overlap, mergence, and co-creation of crisis and culture. The Arab World experience is one of a crisis of culture and a culture of crisis, and in setting this reality, we begin to understand that the relationship between the two can be one of surprising resolution, of inspiration. The interaction of crisis and culture thus can produce opportunities for change and positivity in the region. In framing a discussion that focuses on resolution, on solutions, the region can begin to negotiate the factors that dictate its state, and start to head into a more positive future. In the Harvard Arab Weekend (HAW) 2014, the narrative becomes not one of separate issues, but one of overlapping discourses, of opportunities born from the intersection of conflict and tradition. The future of the Arab World is shaped by discussions that can offer answers to the current problems, and create venues that promote productive debate. The problems are clear, the opportunities less so; how can we ask the right questions, and propose the right solutions? HAW 2014 takes on this issue, and asks: what can inspire solutions, and what inspiring solutions are waiting for to be implemented?

Where is this Identity headed in the future? Identity is a very complex topic, but one way to make such a discussion easier is by analyze Arab Identity’s formation and then evolution. This panel attempts to resolve to major issues. The first touches on formation: Why are tragedy and pessimism integral to Arab Identity? The second delves into evolution: how can Arab Identity move beyond its current state of pessimism? This Panel thus aims to present a clear idea of what Arab identity is, its history, evolution, and current struggles. In the midst of the political, economic, and social turbulence that faces several nations of the Arab World face, the mainstream perception of scientific and medical research has become a subsidiary discipline. Several oases for the conduction of research in science, medicine, and technology have emerged in the Middle East and GCC regions in defiance of this distorted perception. They set the pace for research, provide grants that defy borders, and encourage collaborations among Arab scientists. Such research foundations and enterprises challenge the perception that the Arab World is scientifically inert. With key representatives of Qatar Foundation, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research, and Zewail City of Science and Technology, we will in turn challenge the mainstream thought that the region is not geared for the conduction of research and lay out solutions that can help further boost this discipline. 14:30-15:50 The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement: Accomplishments, Tactics and Lessons

In light of the collapse of the peace process, the BDS movement stands out as a promising tactic for both raising awareness for the plight of the Palestinians as well as to directly combat the Israeli occupation. The recent accomplishments, although limited in scope, highlight the impact of organized grassroots action on societal and economical entities. Despite those accomplishments, it is unclear what the next milestones are and whether tactical shifts are needed. This panel will highlight recent successes from the BDS movement, discuss approach, and examine its trajectory. It will also attempt to bridge theory with tactics.

This panel will discuss gender rights in a broad context. Rather than merely focus on women’s rights it will also touch upon on LGBTQIQ rights. During the Arab Spring Women’s rights became a renewed focal point for both Western NGOs and women groups in the MENA region. However, the struggle for gender equality and rights has been ongoing for a much longer period of time. In the meantime many different voices and opinions concerning the topic of gender rights have emerged. The panel will place the recent gender rights’ activity in the context of the hope for newly emerging social structures as a result of the Arab Spring. Moreover, it will look at the role of the NGOs and activists movements in this process of change. The group found in this art a creative approach to delve into social issues and to engage creatively with them through a global human language. As we experience economic, political, and social changes, Theatre of the Oppressed presents a facade, the private life of a family member who is trapped in a web of oppression. This gas shortage directly impacts the region’s socio-economic and environmental development and potentially undermines its energy security. The MENA region has recently witnessed a surge in entrepreneurial activity with a significant number of startups being established in the past few years across the region. Some entrepreneurs cloned international success stories, but either failed or had to adapt their business model and product offering to the region’s customer base. Other entrepreneurs came up with innovative ideas, launched products customized to the MENA customer and, in some cases, managed to export their product to foreign markets. This panel will bring together entrepreneurs and VC managers to discuss the challenges and opportunities created by the MENA customer. The panel will also discuss solutions to questions as: what are the unique and different characteristics of the MENA customer? What changes to business models are required to better align with these characteristics? How receptive is this customer to innovation and what does it take to educate him/her on new technologies or products?

STARTUP PITCH STARTUP PITCH
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH 18:10 - 20:40 In recent years, the Harvard Arab Weekend started holding a startup pitch competition with the goal of promoting entrepreneurship and encouraging startups from the MENA region by bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and investors. On Saturday November 8th Business School Campus in Boston to pitch their idea to a panel of judges in no more than five minutes followed by a five minute feedback and Q&A session. The team with the best pitch receives the Samih Darwazah Entrepreneurship & Excellence Award. The judges who will be evaluating the different teams and their pitches as well as identifying the competition winner are: • • • • • • • •

Namek Zu’bi – Managing Partner at Silicon Badia Ra’ad Siraj – Managing Director and Head of Data Solutions at State Street Global Exchange(SSGX)Ziad Mokhtar – Partner at Ideavelopers
The judges will evaluate the team composition, the business model and strategy, the customer value proposition, the market size and growth potential as well as the potential impact on the MENA market. After a thorough review of all the received applications, 10 startups were selected. These include: • • • • • • • • • •

Friday, November 7th: Harvard Arab Weekend Gala Dinner Held at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square, the Annual HAW Gala is a celebration of the conference’s leadership team, distinguished speakers, and honorable guests. This year, the Harvard Arab Alumni Association will confer its lifetime achievement award on Dr. Leila Fawaz during the Gala. Saturday, November 8th: Harvard Arab Weekend Healthcare Reception This year, we are thrilled to announce our first Healthcare Reception; an event that we hope will serve as a dynamic networking platform for senior Arab professionals in the medical, healthcare and scientific research fields. It will also engage the younger generation of research fellows, medical residents, medical students and pre-medical students, as to encourage them to get involved changing the healthcare landscape in the Arab world. The Harvard Arab Weekend is excited to present “A Night at the Museum”. Come spend an evening at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, wandering among prehistoric fossils, reptiles, and dinosaurs. Enjoy cocktails face-to-face with the world’s only mounted Kronosaurus, a 42-foot-long marine reptile. We are excited to have conference attendees in our reception, which will be a wonderful opportunity to meet our many distinguished speakers and panelists. This year, the “Business Day Networking Event” will start off with a “Speed Networking” session where attendees will have the opportunity to join panelists and speakers in exciting, intimate, and structured conversations. Participants will be able to form initial connections with panelists and other participants over small round-table discussions on common areas of interest. After a few rounds, participants will transition into the next part of the networking event where they will continue the conversation over cocktails and snacks. BASSEM YOUSSEF Bassem Youssef; dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Arab World, hosted the popular TV show “Al-Bernameg” – which was the first-of-its-kind political satire show in the Middle East. Originally airing as an online 5-minute-show in 2011, Al-Bernameg became the most watched show in the history of Egyptian TV with an average of 40 million viewers every week, in addition to over 2 million subscribers on its official YouTube channel and over 184 million views. The first live audience show in the Middle East received wide acclaim around the world with coverage in some of the biggest media outlets, topping it off with Youssef’s appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart twice in June 2012 and November 2013. DR.FREDDIE BAZ Dr. Freddie Baz joined Bank Audi in 1991 as advisor to the Chairman and founded the Secretariat for Planning and Development. As the Group Chief Financial Officer and Strategy Director, he now has overall authority over the finance, MIS and budgeting functions throughout the Group, and is responsible for the development of the Group strategy. Dr. Freddie Baz has also taught for several years at the Faculty of Economics of the Université St. Joseph of Beirut. He is the author of several publications and articles, and a permanent lecturer in Arab and international academic and professional conferences. Dr. Freddie Baz holds a State PhD degree in Economics from the University of Paris I (Panthéon – Sorbonne). LEILA FAWAZ

Leila Fawaz was named a Chevalier in the French National Order of the Legion of Honor in 2012. She is the Issam M. Fares Professor of Lebanese and Eastern Mediterranean Studies and was the founding director of the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies at Tufts University. Fawaz served on the governing boards of Harvard University as an overseer between 1996 and 2012, and was elected to serve as President of the Board of Overseers for 2011-12. Fawaz received a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University, and is currently continuing to do research on the experience of World War I in the Middle East.

MARCEL KHALIFE
Lebanese composer and oud (Near Eastern lute) master Marcel Khalifé is one of the world’s leading Arabic musicians, reshaping traditional Arabic music into an alluring, universally communicative form of expression. His haunting vocals and mesmerizing instrumentals have fascinated audiences worldwide. In addition to performing, Khalifé is a noted composer who is deeply attached to the lyrical text on which he relies. Through his association with great contemporary Arab poets, most notably the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, he seeks to renew the character of Arab song, breaking its stereotypes and advancing the culture of the society that surrounds it. RANIA SUCCAR
Rania Succar is co-founder of Jusoor and also a member of the Jusoor Leadership Team. On the Jusoor Leadership Team, she oversees key Jusoor programs including the University Scholarship Education program and the Refugee Education Program. Rania has long been passionate about economic development in the Arab World, and also co-founded the Harvard Arab Alumni Association in 2001. Rania is the Head of North America Brand Solutions at Google. Rania earned her bachelors degree from Harvard University in Economics, an MPA in International Development from the Harvard Kennedy School and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Rania recently moved to San Francisco from Chicago. She has enjoyed exploring the Bay Area over the past year and loves to experiment with new challenges in the kitchen. FADI MAJDALANI Fadi Majdalani is a Partner with Strategy& and the leader of the firm’s Engineered Products and Services practice in the Middle East. He has over 12 years of management consulting experience and focuses on large-scale strategy-based transformation. His projects have included strategy-based transformation programs for regional airlines, national postal operators, and railway operators, all of which were preparing for deregulation. Fadi holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, a master’s degree in civil engineering from MIT, and an engineering bachelor’s degree with distinction from the American University of Beirut.

FADI GHANDOUR Fadi Ghandour is the Founder and Vice Chairman of Aramex. He is currently Executive Chairman of Wamda Ventures, a new Venture Capital fund focusing on technology investments in the Arab World, and Managing Partner of MENA Venture Investments. He is Member of the Board of Abraaj Capital, Member of the Board of Endeavor Global, Member of the Advisory Council of the MIT Media Lab and Member of the Board of Trustees at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He is also Founding Investor in Maktoob.com sold to Yahoo in 2009. ALI JABER Born in Lebanon in 1961, Mr. Jaber completed his Bachelors in Business Administration at the American University of Beirut in 1984 before going on to earn his Master’s degree in Communications at Syracuse University in the US in 1986. Upon returning to Beirut, Ali joined the Fine Arts faculty of Beirut University College. In 2011 Ali was approached by Middle East media leader, MBC Group for a different type of challenge – this time in front of the camera, as a judge for the internationally mega-successful format, “Arabs Got Talent”. Ali Jaber serves on the Board of Directors of two non-governmental organizations: Young Arab Leaders (YAL) and the Advisory Board of American University of Beirut, School of Architecture and Design, in Beirut, Lebanon.
