Have you experienced the frustration and disappointment that no matter how hard you try to scratch off a few items from your daily list of short-term goals, they systematically multiply?

Has the experience of reaching a long-term objective (large or small) ended in the replacement of a half-dozen more, following you into the evening and causing your mind to race and body to toss and turn?

How about those beleaguering thoughts you may never complete and the plethora of responsibilities that interfere with relaxing and enjoying quality personal time?

For many—it’s a common occurrence, and with age, it seems the pressure of time allocation is insurmountable, a constant distraction interfering with a sense of true accomplishment.

22 | MARCH 2024 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA Present
NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | MARCH 2024 | 23

Some of the turmoil may be attributed to self-imposed procrastination, but more likely than not, it’s derived from a pace we must adapt due to cultural changes, advances in technology, and the pressure to succeed in a convoluted and highly competitive world.

Does this knowledge change anything? No, because once you’ve finished reading these words, your mind will quickly divert to the mental list you store in your head, causing a need to meet those challenges related to an innate drive to succeed.

These claims don’t apply to everyone; the concept of pursuing a quest for change, growth, or completion isn’t relevant to some; in fact, if you were to poll friends, family, and perhaps a few strangers, you might find you’re part of a small percentage of those who opt to join the ‘club’ where members adhere to an ambitious lifestyle and seek to be better today than they were yesterday.

Some of the reasons for attaining creative or productive excellence are related to the adaptation of ‘goaloriented’ behaviors and how the mind formulates directives you give it; more precisely, it’s the process of obtaining information, guiding critical thinking, and then producing a positive outcome or result.

It’s thought some succumb to the physiological left-brain right-brain traits when explaining personality, while others pinpoint behavioral learning as what shapes us, as described by notable psychologist B.F. Skinner. Regardless of etiology, it’s the measurable outcomes that will be viewed as a success or a failure.

With this, many individuals are flooded with spontaneous ideas and ambitions that seem to be within reach, only to be diluted because of the impossibility of achieving results in a mere 24-hour period or a lifetime. Yet, disappointment doesn’t tarnish their vision because the hope of turning an idea into reality against all odds remains attainable within the minds of some.

The affliction plaguing the highly motivated, exceptionally creative, and intellectually curious during their time

on this earth comes with collective frustration and disappointment because they believe there will never be enough bandwidth within their lifetimes to explore and achieve the greatness they envision.

At the expense and sacrifice for achievement over a lesser outcome—but offering a more sedate existence, they believe it is a duty to reach above and beyond the average expectancy of others; it’s not a choice; instead, it’s taken as a responsibility that shapes the individual.

between over-achievers and society as a whole. Through the examination of relationships between the masses and non-traditional one-percenters (eschewed from wealth and focused on their insatiable need to push the proverbial envelope in search of what doesn’t exist), we find a remarkable list of familiar names that have dramatically influenced society since humankind stood erect and harnessed fire.

We need more people who think outside the box, and that could be you: those who struggle but continue to fight for what they believe, never to accept the pejorative offered by those who panic when the status quo tacks to a different direction.

For those who have prematurely turned the page, the clarity of the message set forth will be lost without realization—and never actualized; as for the rest of you, this explanation either accurately describes your inner person or validates what drives your motivation.

The company you keep is a reflection of you; often, our choices in selecting friends and mates will mirror our intimate selves; it is assumed we are similar to those we choose to associate with and model.

By focusing on a larger audience, we can better explain the differences

To think we as a species have advanced our intellectual evolution up to the study, challenges, and applications of AI and what will soon follow is not only a remarkable feat of genius but a blueprint for others to ask questions we don’t know exist.

If you can relate to this narrative, perhaps find truth in its words, or see your reflection, here are some names of people who didn’t waste their lives on trivia but instead enriched the world.

Aristotle, Bach, Beethoven, Benz, Bezos, Graham Bell, Buffett, Chaucer, Confucius, Curie, da Vinci, Darwin, Diesel, Disney, Douglass, Dürer, Edison, Einstein, Feynman, Fleming, Ford, Franklin, Frederick Douglass, Freud, Galileo, Gandhi, Gates, Gutenberg, Helen Keller, Jobs, Peter Lynch, Lincoln, Lindbergh, Marconi, Martin Friedman, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mandela, Martin Friedman, Meredith Whittaker, Michelangelo, Mozart, Musk, Newton, Nightingale, Oppenheimer, Pasteur, Rembrandt, Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Shakespeare, Sitting Bull, Socrates, Tesla, Turing, Twain, Von Braun, and Washington.

We need more people who think outside the box, and that could be you: those who struggle but continue to fight for what they believe, never to accept the pejorative offered by those who panic when the status quo tacks to a different direction.

A creative mind is a terrible thing to waste; accept you’re not the norm but rather a welcoming exception that should be an example to others.

Spread the word, and don’t give up on your list. H

Waterville Valley Hosts

World Cup Event To Enthusiastic Crowds

Visitors hiked or skied to the base of the steep, wideopen trail intersecting with Valley Run and endured the unfavorable conditions while viewing the racers twist and turn in the air without obstructions.

Thrills

What began as a cold, wet, and foggy weekend, with a bone-chilling rainsnow-sleet storm at the end of January, turned out to be an exciting and long-awaited competition that has been anticipated (for 33 years) at the home of ‘Freestyle’ skiing.

Staged on Lower Bobby’s Run, which commemorates Robert F. Kennedy, a U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate, before his assassination in June of 1968, it’s a slope he and his family favored at the low-key but iconic New England resort.

Visitors hiked or skied to the base of the steep, wideopen trail intersecting with Valley Run and endured the unfavorable conditions while viewing the racers twist and turn in the air without obstructions.

Not all who ski at Waterville Valley realize that RFK had a lot to do financially with its development. In the mid-1960s, Waterville went up for sale by Ralph Bean and caught the attention of Tom Corcoran, an Olympic skier. Having some difficulties with raising capital, he called on his friend Bobby, whom he met during his days at Harvard. With his influence and deep pockets, Kennedy ensured the New Hampshire resort was purchased and was able to expand it into what it is today.

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | MARCH 2024 | 29

Many recount seeing the Kennedy clan spending weekends at the heralded mountain; it was a short journey from the Massachusetts coastline.

Another event that had made the history books was back in the 60s when ‘hot dog’ skiing came onto the stage; it was Waterville Valley that hosted an event where the legend of freestyle, Wayne Wong, trekked down from Vancouver for the mountain’s first Exhibition Skiing event. And, even though Wong only took third place, his on-and-off snow personality and skill set won him broad appeal and international recognition for pushing the envelope and putting on an incredible show of tactical skiing as never witnessed before.

Wong went on to become a world champion and to be elected, over and over, as one of the most influential skiers of the modern age.

As an international exhibition, the United Airlines Waterville Valley Freestyle World Cup attracts the best skiers on the planet from every mountain with a field of moguls.

Notable, Ikuma Horishima, 26-year-old and a Beijing Olympic Bronze Medalist from the Japanese Freestyle Team, placed first on day one, his third win this season, giving him a lead over Kingsbury by 50 points.

He also served as head freestyle coach at Waterville Valley in 1973 and continues to maintain a close relationship with the mountain.

While we didn’t see him during the twoday 2024 World Cup event, there were reports that he was onsite for the weekend.

As an international exhibition, the United Airlines Waterville Valley Freestyle World Cup attracts the best skiers on the planet from every mountain with a field of moguls.

For those unfamiliar with what makes mastering freestyle an outstanding achievement, allow us to share.

Organizers select what is usually the run with the steepest vertical drop, enduring length, and a field of refrigerator-sized moguls. Athletes ski down in a straight line and maintain control with what equates to microsecond turns, leading to an area that allows them to launch into death-defying aerials, only to land back on the snow and continue the exhausting performance until the next leap of faith appears and then repeat their signature feat.

Adding to the excitement, skiers are racing against the clock!

By the finals, on Saturday, Canadian superstar Mikael Kingsbury earned his 86th win, with Australian champion Jakara Anthony taking out U.S. skier Jaelin Kauf, making this her 8th World Cup.

Notable, Ikuma Horishima, 26-year-old and a Beijing Olympic Bronze Medalist from the Japanese Freestyle Team, placed first on day one, his third win this season, giving him a lead over Kingsbury by 50 points.

While the stars of ‘bump’ skiing bring the thrill and awe to the winter season that hasn’t witnessed live and up close mountain drama, the individuals and teams achieved success and accolades for skill, speed, and daring displays of acrobatics that cause spectators to hold their breath in anticipation.

The electrifying energy and fervor that hung in the air from start to finish aren’t often duplicated; hopefully, we’ll see a return of this one-of-a-kind event to the place where it began. H

Body Counts & Dating

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK

Body Count: A term once reserved as an indicator of victims murdered by serial killers has been highjacked by ‘pop culture’ and applied as a new behavioral norm.

In the past, sexual prowess was considered a badge of honor—reserved for boys and men, allowing them bragging rights in efforts to elevate their masculinity and desirability.

As for women, talk of their conquests was kept private, not to be asked or shared; at one time, it was considered an emblem of dishonor—not so today.

Discussions of sexuality have changed; social media has been singled out as a catalyst.

But are we at a point of no return? Will we exhaust the supply of sexual partners and face the inability to find satisfaction, loyalty, and commitment to a single person for a lifetime? Both questions have crossed many minds, but seeing the answers is complicated.

In researching the subject, we located volumes of data, much more than expected. With the discovery, we hope to bring everyone on board and provide insights from the best and brightest researchers.

To begin with, it would appear the number of sexual partners an individual takes on in their lifetime has dramatically increased in totality based on social media and stories by various news organizations. At the same time, body count averages— per person—appear to have also grown but disproportionately to each sex. In

many cases, the speculation is based on information provided by purveyors of titillation, social trends, and those with opportunities for personal gain.

From what we have gathered, there is no assigning a standard or typical number of sex partners individuals enjoy; instead, researchers use an alternative method for compiling data known as the median number of ‘hookups’ (another adaptation of the vocabulary) to estimate sexual participation.

As with most measurements of human behavior, we can’t ‘unnotice’ the extremes which are anchored between those who celebrate celibacy and in the other direction, as exemplified by rock & roll entertainer Gene Simmons, who likes to promote he has bedded just shy of 5,000 sexual partners.

With this remarkable variant to use as a guide, many find themselves asking, “Where do I fit on the scale?”

It’s necessary to acknowledge body count is a single measurement of quantity, and by no means does it reflect quality.

It’s also arbitrary and subjected to personal evaluation; those keeping count can include their perspective of bedroom antics; vaginal, oral, anal, multiple partners at the same time, bisexuality, even non-sexual contact with the participation in what is referred to as ‘kink.’

Keeping a personal account allows the decision-makers to decide whether an event is added or parsed from their memories; these fluid lists lack concrete

parameters as well as validity, leaving investigators at the mercy of self-reporting methods for studies.

What affects body count at a macrolevel is structurally outside of our interference; humanity reaps benefits or suffers declines due to changing waves of culture, economics, education, religion, and technology. Additionally, the influence of biased media and their unscientific reporting adds another variable.

An analogy illustrating what seems to be taking place can be explained by example: taking a small clump of snow and tossing it down a never-ending mountain slope will cause the small sphere to enlarge through continuous accumulation, and if not stopped, it might not ever end—only build larger and larger in size and scope; overpowering all in its way.

With this in mind, we toiled to find a study that would support what we have been told about the hypersexual conduct taking place during the last decade or two; however, what we saw was quite different than expected.

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, a peerreviewed medical journal, they claim in the United States, “Between 2000 to 2018, sexual ‘inactivity’ increased among men aged 18 to 24 years and 25 to 34 years, and [in] women aged 25 to 34 years during the [same] study period, with the increase [in inactivity]

34 | MARCH 2024 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA Intimacy

among men who were unmarried.” They added, “Men with lower income and with part-time or no employment were more likely to be sexually inactive, as were men and women who were students.”

Startling, since it was a time when online dating sites exploded, with many offering ‘no-string’ attachments at a moment’s notice, most would believe it was a perfect opportunity to ramp up sexual activity to record levels. Compounding our skepticism about the published results, during the timeline, we found news reports filled with insights and facts related to increases in transmittable sexual diseases, leading us to believe sexual contact was escalating!

Questioning the reliability of the findings, we took a deep dive with the hope of explaining results that conflicted with our understanding of the trend or lack of one.

Much to our surprise and deflating our hypothesis, we found a second qualified source yielding similar results but with a more defined explanation for the decrease in sexual interactions of the public.

Even though socio-demographic trends propped up by social and other media, which all but advertise the importance of becoming sexually adroit while promoting businesses and practices specific to interpersonal and sexual relationships, we learned that the decrease in sexual partners was the result of subjects having a plethora of “solo options” resulting in a deflation of interpersonal relationships.

Also at play were uncertain economic conditions; as the country has spirited through financial uncertainty and the dividing of the “haves” and “have-nots,” traditional dating no longer exists in its original form.

Men have found their responsibility for hosting a night out, averaging a cost between $100-$500, is not in their best interests. At the same time, women insist their “thirsty-slay” (translation: a date looking for sex) demonstrate an appreciation and acknowledgment of their self-ranked value by demanding

expensive dates that are inclusive of dinner, events, and vacations.

This dynamic suggests that those with higher incomes will have significant resources for teasing out new partners; it also points to the increase in MayDecember relationships, which are becoming prevalent. The result leaves the less fortunate to pace the sidelines or surf porn for their satisfaction.

Researchers have concluded that Gen Z is much more cautious, even “hesitant about hookups than previous generations.” It also accounts for what is found in social settings. More than ever, the sexes are staying away from bars and restaurants; their traffic has significantly decreased. However, when spotted, the genders gather in isolated packs; it isn’t unusual to witness groups of the same gender dining out and dancing, with minimal commingling with the opposition. This odd occurrence seems to be due to prevailing economic conditions.

Returning to our original question specific to body counts, it seems social media has once again shown it is more ‘window dressing’ than reality. The porn-related fan-only type sites, influencers exaggerating erotic and exotic lifestyles, and FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) have created unrealistic fantasies. Similarly, the mainstream media colluded with them and further inflated misconceptions.

Moreover, in an anecdotal study, researchers in Great Britain surveyed close to 2,000 Europeans and Americans in 2019. They found that women averaged 7 sexual partners, while men surprisingly settled in at 6.4. Interestingly, both groups found agreement that the wishful number of partners they would want their mate to have previously enjoyed would be 7.5. Unfortunately, the ages of the subjects in this study were not shared.

Another study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (date unconfirmed) shows that “12.9 percent of women between 25 and 49 and 28.3 percent of men in that age range have had 15 or more partners, while 17.7

percent of women and 11.2 percent of men in that age range have had just one.”

These findings line up more with what a cross-section of the population possibly looks like today.

A question that many have secretly asked themselves, regardless of their sexual experiences, is whether they will find happiness with someone who doesn’t rank in the top 1-2 percent of previous partners. And, will what starts as a loving relationship lose its luster when the sex becomes ritualistic or less exciting over time?

What we know from a wide range of sources is that as one’s body count extends to more than 10-12 partners, comparisons begin to creep into relationships and can interfere with contentment.

Those reaching 50-100+ partners find themselves chasing an unquenchable desire to find ‘the best’ sexual partner and achieve what they view as a perfect relationship. Of course, they often remain single and never find rest.

It’s clear that traditional relationships are alive and well, and even though we don’t use derogatory descriptives for those with high body counts, their meaning has not been erased from our minds.

Those seeking to build long-lasting relationships will search for someone with similar expectations, respectability, and discretion—like water seeking its own level, we do the same.

In the end, time will tell us more; as for now, all we can ask is if the changes taking place will be long-lasting for the betterment of society or if recent results are outliers from insufficient studies.

Regardless, these findings have alerted us not to be lulled into believing that rampant sexual exploitation is the ‘new norm.’

At the same time, there is a subtle warning being floated. Women sway, tailor, and move culture forward—it’s all around us. If you want a clear image of what is to come, watch and listen to their messaging. They have massive influence—never doubt this—and they will decide the direction of personal connections into the future.

Men will succumb or stay resilient; it is anyone’s guess what the next decade will look like.

Good luck in your search for a mate. H

IIs Your Health ‘Hack’ Safe?

THE WILD WEST OF SOCIAL MEDIA SELF-CARE

n a brief YouTube video with nearly 120,000 views, a sincere young man in a gym setting instructs followers on how to “dry scoop” their preworkout performance-enhancing powder for when they don’t have time to properly mix it in water. He explains that by scooping powder directly into their mouth, they can accelerate the absorption of active ingredients versus conventional digestion. The effects are “almost immediate” in his experience.1

In another video, this time on Facebook and with nearly 340,000 views, a no-nonsense middle-aged woman illustrates how she prepares her favorite morning elixir. In a small glass of water, she inputs “a pinch” of borax (without mentioning the product to dodge the censors), a pinch of Celtic sea salt, and a pinch of baking soda. Salty like the Dead Sea, she mixes the concoction with a spoon, then quickly shoots it back as if it were a whiskey. She claims, as many other social media influencers do, that the recipe is effective for gut issues, immune disorders, and preventing pain from inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. 2

ONGOING CONCERN

Dubious health fads on social media are nothing new. They can pose a real public health risk when roughly 302 million Americans, or more than 90 percent of the U.S. population, used such platforms in 2022—a number projected to increase to about 327 million people by 2027. At least 80 percent of cancer patients, for example, now use social media to connect with their peers.3, 4

The problem is clear, say observers, where a steady stream of

health trends promotes a climate of medical misinformation. The short bursts of healthrelated information minus any context and in-depth examination are characteristic of TikTok, where many of these fads originate. Worse, many social media influencers promoting the so-called borax challenge are monetizing their videos. Eager for clicks and cash, influencers are funneling viewers to an established group of sellers of unproven products lacking federal consent.5

It’s a cottage industry fueled by social media health trends, particularly when pushback occurs, videos are removed, and devout followers believe their favorite influencer is being targeted for telling the truth.5 (This isn’t to say there can’t be legitimate instances where truth is suppressed online.)

Despite the many anecdotes of personal harm caused by these trends, it’s the stories of people testifying to how they’ve been miraculously cured that drive curiosity and corral new eyes. Once viewed, the algorithm then promotes similar content, and the misinformation is perpetuated.5

Monica Wang, Sc.D., Associate Professor of Public Health at Boston University and an expert in health misinformation, notes that an analysis of TikTok and Instagram posts between 2022 and 2023 showed dozens of registered dietician influencers were paid to promote sugar, diet soda, and supplements. Yet, their affiliation with the industry wasn’t consistently made clear to viewers.6

Wang cites declining trust in government and science with the spread of health misinformation. Social media enables people to live comfortably in information silos by allowing the curation of content that suits their views, thus reinforcing cognitive biases.6

Well Being

DUBIOUS HEALTH FADS ON SOCIAL MEDIA ARE NOTHING NEW. THEY CAN POSE A REAL PUBLIC HEALTH RISK WHEN ROUGHLY 302 MILLION AMERICANS, OR MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF THE U.S. POPULATION, USED SUCH PLATFORMS IN 2022—A NUMBER PROJECTED TO INCREASE TO ABOUT 327 MILLION PEOPLE BY 2027.

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | MARCH 2024 | 37
WE’RE LIVING IN WHAT EXPERTS REFER TO AS AN “INFODEMIC” ERA, WHERE THERE’S AN OVERABUNDANCE OF EASILY ACCESSIBLE HEALTH INFORMATION—SOME TRUE AND SOME NOT—THAT’S ESPECIALLY PROBLEMATIC DURING TIMES OF CRISIS.

Research on Twitter-based misinformation between 2006 and 2017 showed that, regardless of information category, untruths had a 70 percent greater likelihood of being spread than truths and were spread much quicker and deeper.7

QUESTIONABLE TREATMENTS AND TIPS

Health misinformation is more likely to be found in certain areas than in others. In a comprehensive research review, investigators found a hierarchy of health misinformation occurrences on social media. Misinformation was most widespread in media regarding smoking products and narcotics such as marijuana and opioids (as much as 87 percent in some studies). This was followed by vaccines (43 percent), communicable diseases (40 percent), especially regarding cancer, diet, and pro-eating disorder arguments (36 percent), and medical treatments (30 percent).8

As described by Cleveland Clinic, below is a partial list of social media health treatments and practices people should eschew to avoid potential harm and help stop the spread of misinformation.9

Dry scooping, introduced earlier, is a dangerous practice among youth in which users empty a scoop of pre-workout powder directly into their mouth. To avoid coughing, choking, and spitting it out, the lips are sealed, air is exhaled through the nose, and breathing is stopped. Pre-moistening the mouth is advised so the powder isn’t dry, making it easier to absorb and swallow. Chasing it with a swig of water is common. Proponents admit it’s tricky to perform at first, and coughing is normal. Research shows that this practice can lead to respiratory and/or cardiovascular distress and even death, especially when consumed in conjunction with energy drinks or alcohol.10

#WhatIeatinaday is a prevalent, ongoing TikTok trend featuring videos of a person’s 24-hour food intake. On its face, it may sound harmless, but experts warn it can lead to eating disorders. Viewers can begin comparing themselves and feel shamed into eating less than what their body requires to maintain health. Everyone’s caloric needs differ based on age, sex, activity, and other factors. “Don’t be swayed by other people’s diets,” advises Cleveland Clinic.

The Benadryl challenge involves taking excessive amounts of diphenhydramine (Benadryl ®) at one time to induce an altered mental state and delirium. Emerging online in 2020, the trend has claimed the life of at least one person— a 13-year-old Ohio boy who took 12-14 pills in one sitting and never woke up. Taken improperly, the drug can cause side effects, including brain damage and death.

Treating earwax with hydrogen peroxide can break up excess earwax but may not be as safe as TikTokkers imply. Doctors say pure hydrogen peroxide can irritate the ear canal. Moreover, clearing out earwax really isn’t necessary, they say,

since the wax protects the eardrum and typically falls out on its own. Hearing trouble could be from a wax plug inside the ear canal (impacted cerumen), which a doctor should address if traditional ear drops fail.

Sunscreen countering involves TikTokkers using a suntan on select parts of their face in lieu of contour makeup. Instead of protecting all their face with sunscreen, women are relying on sun damage to colorize, risking both skin cancer and premature aging. Though less convenient, dermatologists say women should cover (all) exposed skin and stick to applying highlighter.

Do-it-yourself teeth whiteners often involve pure hydrogen peroxide, which, like earwax removal, can cause serious damage. Too much peroxide can damage protective tooth enamel and lead to oral cancer. The American Dental Association advises against applying abrasive substances like pure peroxide directly onto teeth. Instead, opt for whitening strips or toothpaste with baking soda, for example.

Mucus fishing entails picking not one’s nose but eyes to remove unsightly mucus strings. However, the mucus serves to protect and lubricate the eye surface; removing it only irritates the eye, causing even more mucus to be made. This can become a vicious cycle of habitual behavior known as “mucus fishing syndrome.” Diagnosing and managing the underlying reason for excessive mucus, such as dry eye, is advised.

THE BORAX CHALLENGE

Borax, part of a family of boron-based minerals known as borates, is a naturally occurring salt, with boron being essential to human and plant health.

The trend of drinking borax began on TikTok last summer, and many of the more popular videos have since been removed, but the controversial practice has been promoted online for some time. A private Facebook group, for example, boasts over 40,000 adherents to drinking or bathing in borax.

Reminiscing the 2018 Tide Pod-eating trend, is there a sound rationale for mature adults to ingest laundry detergent?

Professor Keith Scott-Mumby, MB ChB, M.D., Ph.D., is an alternative medicine sleuth who believes in treating arthritis with borax and points to the many anecdotes of people getting healed after bathing in the Dead Sea.

He recounts the early work of renowned naturopath Rex Newnham, Ph.D., D.O., N.D., who said he healed his arthritic pain in three weeks with 30 mg. of borax daily. By word of mouth, Newnham would go on to sell a borax tablet in Australia to the tune of 10,000 bottles a month until 1981, when the government enacted policies that shut him down. The rationale is that boron, as either borax or over-the-counter boron tablets, facilitates calcium metabolism to ease joint inflammation and help prevent bone loss.11

38 | MARCH 2024 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Though Newnham claims to have identified effective doses of boron supplements in his research, medical toxicologist Kelly Johnson-Arbor, M.D. of the National Capital Poison Center (NCPC), writes that we’re still unsure of boron supplements’ effectiveness in humans, as well as the precise dose and duration to affect bone health. While research in rats has shown borax’s ability to reduce inflammation from chemotherapy and spinal cord injury, she maintains there’s not enough evidence to prove boron’s anti-inflammatory effects in humans.12

NCPC says borax can be toxic when ingested, inhaled, or contacting the skin. Short-term consumption can lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Vomit and stool can appear blue-green, and skin redness, rashes, and peeling can occur. Long-term use can lead to seizures and anemia.12

AI search engines say there’s “no definitive answer” as to whether borax is safe for human consumption, but the prevailing medical view is that borax is for cleaning clothes, not eating.

EXPERT ADVICE

We’re living in what experts refer to as an “infodemic” era, where there’s an overabundance of easily accessible health information—some true and some not—that’s especially problematic during times of crisis. But since Dr. Google is likely here to stay, it’s wise to give heed only to qualified healthcare professionals, and preferably those without industry ties.

To help individuals spread truth and not falsehood, Wang says

to rely on credible sources, like the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, peer-reviewed journals, etc. Look at author credentials, note the publication date to ensure the research conveys the most up-to-date information, investigate other reliable sources to determine scientific consensus, question sensational claims, and choose scientific evidence over personal anecdote. When in doubt, speak with a healthcare professional and don’t share the information.6

Ultimately, viral social media health trends should be viewed with a critical eye, says Cleveland Clinic. “The internet is no substitute for the advice of a medical professional.” 9 H

Where Does The Truth Lie Twenty Years Later?

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO MAURA MURRAY?

Recently, John M. Formella, the Attorney General of New Hampshire, who has tirelessly held countless offenders responsible for their crimes over the years, brought welldeserved attention to a cold case involving a missing woman who has never been found, and what many have voiced and speculated as an unsolved abduction 20 years ago.

In a press release from the AG’s office, two words uncomfortably stand out, particularly to us; “Anniversary” and “Disappearance.” It’s our opinion neither accurately describes the events surrounding the mystery.

40 | MARCH 2024 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA Crime

HERE IS THE UNEDITED NEWS RELEASE

Concord, NH – Attorney General John M. Formella announces that today the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit is issuing an age progression photograph of Maura Murray in an effort to generate new leads and helpful tip information to aide in the ongoing investigation into the February 9, 2004, suspicious disappearance of Ms. Murray from Haverhill, New Hampshire.

“We are continuing to work with our local, state, and federal partners, including the FBI, to identify resources to try to advance this case,” said Attorney General Formella. “It is our hope that this twentieth anniversary of Ms. Murray’s disappearance will bring renewed attention to the case that might ultimately lead to justice and closure for the Murray family.”

The new age progression photograph, produced by our partners at the FBI, is being issued to reinforce ongoing investigative efforts in the disappearance of Maura Murray. Issuance of the photograph is consistent with missing person investigations and not based on a change in the investigative posture of this case or new information. The photograph represents an FBI analysis and projection of what Ms. Murray might look like in 2024.

Maura Murray (age 21 at the time of her disappearance) had been a nursing student at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and left the college on February 9, 2004. At approximately 7:30 p.m. that night, Ms. Murray’s car, a black-colored Saturn 4-door sedan, was involved in what appeared to be a single-car accident on Route 112 (Route 112 is also known as Wild Ammonoosuc Road) in Haverhill, New Hampshire. Shortly after, a private citizen saw and spoke to a female, believed to be Ms. Murray, at the accident scene. However, when the police arrived,

she was not there and has not been seen nor heard from since. Ms. Murray was last seen on surveillance footage earlier in the day at an ATM wearing a dark jacket and jeans. Ms. Murray did not share with others her pending trip to New Hampshire, which was about 2.5 hours away from UMASSAmherst. Maura Murray received prior education at the United States Military Academy at West Point, was an avid

runner, and enjoyed hiking in the White Mountains. In the years since Ms. Murray went missing, numerous searches of the area at and around the accident scene have been conducted by law enforcement authorities and private citizens, with no positive results.

Due to the ongoing investigation, no additional information will be released at this time. Anyone with information about Maura Murray is asked to call the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit at 603-271-2663 or email them at ColdCaseUnit@dos.nh.gov.

For those unaware, over the years, we have spent countless hours and resources investigating the case; we conducted interviews (and have been interviewed by various sources) and given leads from locals who claimed insight into Murray’s “Disappearance” and possible suspects, including a police officer.

The result of our efforts led us to feature multiple stories questioning what appeared to be the possibility of an abduction leading to murder.

Information we had included claims that the tailpipe of the car was stuffed with a rag, which had to have happened moments before it lost power, causing the steering and brakes to cease operating, resulting in the car slamming into a snow bank and coming to a stop. Then, there is speculation that whoever she spoke to must have instilled trust, only to be accosted after taking a ride to nearby Lincoln, New Hampshire.

Unfortunately, to the frustration of many others, the authorities have kept the Maura Murray case open, which means news agencies and others are unable to review the files, leading to more questions than answers.

The release of a photo identifying Murray as how she might look today appears as a fool’s errand. As an odd reminder of the unsolved case, releasing a computergenerated image of the victim would indicate that the cold-case unit, local, state, and federal authorities (FBI) believe she suddenly decided to leave her family and disappear forever—even still alive!

Not knowing all that is hidden, why would this case not finally be closed so the light of day can shine on the facts?

It’s such a disappointment when a family is manipulated—given false hope that their loved one might be among us. Still, the worst is the blocking of information that could lead to the person or persons responsible for what ostensibly seems like a homicide. H

A HISTORY OF LETTERS, VOLUME II

Brings Written Words To Life

As fans of Chancellor Professor Emeritus of French Language and Literature at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, author of 9 books, and local celebrity Dr. Mel B. Yoken, we know he continuously has multiple projects in the pipeline.

Having the pleasure of his friendship and unequivocal support in our effort to continue with the written word in print, we accept the expectation that at any moment, a release or announcement of grave importance will arrive at our doorstep with unprecedented eloquence and inimitability.

It wasn’t long; in February, he met our expectations with the release of his new work, A History of Letters, Memorable Quotes From A Moribund Art, Volume II, Atmosphere Press, 2023.

In February, he met our expectations with the release of his new work, A History of Letters, Memorable Quotes From A Moribund Art, Volume II, Atmosphere Press, 2023. Not surprised by his incomparable diligence, we recalled it wasn’t long ago that Dr. Yoken published his work, A History of Letters, Memorable Quotes From A Moribund Art Vol I, which we found Delightful and worthy of review at the time.

With this new entry into the archives, we pause to think about the thoughtfulness, texture, and richness produced by an instrument guided by one’s hand and shared through a seldom-practiced art form, gasping for a last breath. Not that it doesn’t continue to retain importance— it will always be an integral part of history, but so true, the unintentional desertion by progress has only increased its intrinsic value.

We yield to the Professor’s comments and his better understanding of where we find ourselves; undoubtedly, of all the authors, he keenly notes the inevitable flurry of time and its passing while acknowledging the importance of capturing a vanishing tool of communication, one with the ability to emote a state of mind, the depths of sincerity and heartfelt authenticity a keyboard can chillingly imitate, but never—pardon for the cliché; duplicate the warmth of written correspondence

A person’s signature is an extension of their physical being; it’s

also a connection to their consciousness, which brings life to this second volume of letters that were explicitly personalized for Dr. Yoken’s eyes, his touch and responsibility for their custodial care so future generations will have the same comfort and enjoyment he has found in them.

We defer to his Nota bene (Latin for ‘note well’).

“Most of the letters in this book were written, often by hand, in a time before the ubiquity of computers and spell checker software. They have been edited for length, readability, consistency, and clarity. Beyond these changes, every effort has been made to preserve the intention and spirit of the original correspondences.”

-Dr. Mel B. Yoken.

Fascinating best describes the experience of reviewing the list of ninety luminaries across generations who have corresponded with Dr. Yoken; nearly all personalities will be recognized at a glance, and for those not, this new release for every library offers an ideal opportunity to become acquainted with them, and practically hear their voices lift from its pages.

Highlighting a few names and excerpts from their letters and notes include Dr. Isaac Asimov, science fiction writer and Professor of Biochemistry; Moshe Dayan, Israeli Minister of Defense; Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice; J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI; Jackie Robinson, First African-American Major League Baseball Player; Barbara Walters, Broadcast Journalism, and so many more to be in touch with and savor their words.

DDividing A Culture Starts With A

o you assume the country is at peak performance, that we have a long-term plan in place for economic prosperity, and there is unquestionable respect and understanding between cultures and societies worldwide?

One Man’s Attempt To Stifle Freedom of Speech, The Press, And What Should Be A Productive Conversation

Have you recently commented to friends and family about the systemic progress we’ve made by lifting all citizens to a standard of living never enjoyed before?

Answering yes to any of these rhetorical questions is likely attributed to one of three explanations for the naive optimism: denial, delusion, or you haven’t paid your cable bill, and your provider has shuttered the television and internet connections into your home.

Even so, one would believe that like-minded individuals would initiate a discussion—at least once—as to the unofficial ‘State of the Union,’ acknowledge the inflationary cost of daily living expenses, problems with a porous border, an unsustainable debt in the trillions, and the intense conflicts bubbling overseas.

FACTS & TRUTH INTERFERE WITH AN AGENDA

Recently, we took on the task of researching and citing sources (both conservative and liberal) in developing our Opinion Piece, “Should We Believe Our Lying Eyes?” (January 2024).

Without directing blame, the problems that surround us today turn a dim light onto the future of generations to follow.

The monthly feature, which is clearly opinion and not attributed to a single person but rather a group effort, came with a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ warning: ‘Readers who cannot differentiate fact from fiction should avoid contact with this content.’ In reality, for extremists of any political perspective, it would make sense to adhere to our advice because, as it has been said many times before, “facts get in the way.”

Apparently, the notice was either ignored or incited a reader’s

curiosity; we learned of this a few weeks ago when a seemingly disturbed person decided to sound off in an email and make threats against us.

It’s not the first time during our 18 years of publishing we’ve been attacked, nor is it any different; as always, it’s the extreme leftists who offer no suggestion other than to shut down all voices they disagree with while conspicuously attempting to violate the Civil Rights of anyone and thing that they view as opposition.

Still, this episode caused us to pause, considering we tried to exemplify the pain and fears of ordinary citizens and offer suggestions to make repairs going forward. In doing so, we attempt to use what works best—a common sense approach.

We’ll get to the radical’s comments a bit later; for now, we want to highlight specific points that were made in the article if you missed the issue.

Here is what you would have found. (Paraphrased for space)

− The White House continues to state economic conditions for families are improving, while CNN reports Moody’s Analytics found, “The typical American household spent $709 more in July 2023 than they did two years ago to buy the same goods and services.” And, since that date, little has changed. To think families could be pressured by an increase of more than $8,500 annually is a difficult pill to swallow because breadwinners didn’t see their income rise at the same rate—especially for low-income populations.

− The Administration also assures citizens they are safe from crime in public spaces and at home, yet according to Newsweek, “Over half of Americans feel like they’re in imminent danger at least once a day. In a poll taken in 2022 with a sample of 2,000 surveyed, 52 percent of respondents reported they feel on edge every day. Also startling is the fact that younger adults are most concerned for their safety, with a whopping 75 percent of those between 25-34 years of age,

compared to 50 percent of respondents aged 45-54, fear of being a victim of crime.

− [T]he Government uses the defense of a non-existent immigration policy by reminding voters we are a nation of immigrants. Yes, that is accurate, with most citizens welcoming new arrivals that play by the rules. However, according to a recent Washington Examiner story with data supplied by the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, over 10 million individuals have illegally entered the U.S. [since] (CORRECTION, ‘as of’) January 2021. The report documents that the total number of new inhabitants is more than the population of 41 states. (UPDATE: these numbers are believed to have increased to an estimated 16 million arrivals as of January 2024) Source: immigration.procon.org.

T− To believe that the Jewish people will not take notice of this betrayal when they deserve support could change the next election and history.

From our published article, again, cited by a list of noteworthy sources— some very liberal, here is the venom a reader feels the urge to spew.

“I just finished reading the article in the January 2024 SOCO magazine entitled “Should We Believe Our Lying Eyes?” by anonymous. I have already started contacting each and every one of the companies that have paid advertising in this issue of SOCO informing them that I will never spend money on their products/services and informing them that I am sharing this email w/both my close and extended circle of friends/family/colleagues—for one reason—because they advertise in this magazine which prints this type of bullshit. I had no idea that SOCO is a MAGA piece of shit.”

(Name withheld by the publisher)

− 63-41 percent disapprove of President Biden’s efforts to run the country. According to two recent polls (CNN, November 1-30, 2023, and AP-NORC, November 30-December 4, 2023), along with what appears to be another slide in popularity as we go to press, there hasn’t been such strong dissatisfaction with a President or subterranean approval since when Harry S. Truman held the office from 1945-1953.

− Adding to the cringe factor is listening to talk about how, ‘We’re going to tax corporations (those same ones who create jobs and expand the retirement wealth of union members, ordinary citizens with 401-K’s, and children who hope their 529 College Savings Plans continue to rise) and expand the economy so we can improve the lives of everyone by building from the center out.’ Really? How about everyone paying their fair share? Some people are treated differently regarding taxes; do you know who it might be?

− “…most eye-opening is the unfathomable and unabashed acts of antisemitism by the liberal woke crowd…[holding to] A hidden agenda that we now learn has lurked under the surface finally comes to light by radicals who routinely deny the egregious attacks upon the Israeli people…[and] Elevating the horror and crimes by Hamas, [the] same people [who] call for the elimination of the Jewish State and the death of its people worldwide. Nobody would believe such a story could be told, yet we watch the savagery play on a loop—day and night.”

We share these comments for a few reasons; first, everyone has the right to speak their minds, even when they want to prevent others from expressing themselves; we’re also pleased to offer this individual the opportunity to divulge his frame of reference and unresolved aggressions and ‘anger issues.’

Secondly, we feel an obligation to show our readers and advertisers what a disturbed person does when the truth interferes with their convoluted perception of reality—this isn’t the norm; he is obviously a troubled individual with a personal agenda and holds a great deal of hate in his heart. To direct it towards us is incomprehensible.

Please judge us; from the excerpts, decide if we wildly created or falsified content found on the streets of America and in homes across the country. While it was an opinion piece, we purposefully included documented facts supporting a narrative and conditions that are inarguable.

One last item pertinent to this follow-up: we’re putting this extremist on alert; we want him to know we have his name, the address of his tiny apartment, phone number, and social media accounts, plus a host of other information that gives us what we need to take legal action if he follows through with his now published threats against our company.

In closing, here is a personal message in return: your civil rights matter, as do ours, but when you threaten financial harm in an attempt to silence us, be frightfully aware you will be held accountable for your actions. H
