ou know the saying: When one door closes, another one opens… With one goodbye, comes another hello… When planning our editorial calendar for this year – at the end of last year – we all agreed that a Special Issue combining December and January would make the most of the season. Kind of in the way Christmas and New Year’s Celebrations go together. They are less than a week apart, after all! So here we introduce our Goodbye and Hello - Special Double Issue. Think of it as a Yearbook - looking back on 2017, as we look ahead to 2018. From the Cocoon to all of you! December is The Present Issue, and includes a Social Soles interview with The Big Guy himself – Santa Claus. Fun, Fashion, and Food is all about The Night Before Christmas! Receiving Christmas Jammies is a fun tradition The Social Sisters celebrate each year. See what they’ll be wearing this Dec 24th. January is The #GoalsIssue. Everyone makes resolutions with the arrival of The New Year, and we have the inspo and info to help meet them! Social Status highlights Dr. Julia Morley and her sweet fur child, LuSeal. The two have received International recognition for raising funds and awareness for obesity. We don’t want to spoil their story by giving away too much here, so flip to their spread, and be prepared to be motivated! Our Fun, Fashion, and Food is full of New Year Traditions to start your year off Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous. As you flip through this issue, you will notice - #Goals of all different sorts. This is our present to you – to help you find THE PLACE to reach your Goals: #LashGoals, #ClosetGoals, #HairGoals,… Have fun with it, we did! We

even hashtagged highlights from some of our fave events from the past year, so you can look forward to this year’s events. Notice that our Special Social Calendars - are actually Rewinds of Events - from our Social Seen Photo Vault that fit each calendar’s theme – MashUps of the two! You can still find celebrations and commemorations for each month of the year ahead at www.SocialButterflyMagazine.com If we had to say what our ABSOLUTE FAVE MEMORY was this past year, we’d have to say our Social Butterfly Magazine Runway and Happy New School Year Party! September is the other New Year when you live in a college town, and so is Fashion Week Season. We were excited to celebrate them together! Shout Out to all who made it happen with us! For our Social Sampling of Events, instead of listing specifics for December and January, we highlighted events that have become traditions – for each month of the year ahead! What Social Expectations do you have for 2018? There’s Lots going on. Check out our Staff Picks. Something for everyone! Make sure to check out our Social Butterfly CollecTIONS and Yinz Pins on our Website. We have Merch for EVERY month of the year! Check out Roll the Rack on our YouTube Channel for fun, seasonal trending, and to see the Social Sisters in SemiDIY and for themed Make Up and Beauty and Manis and Pedis for the Social Calendar, also on our YouTube Channel. Are you subscribed? There is always a reason to commemorate or celebrate. This is our Third New Year together, and we are celebrating! Thanks for staying Social with us! We look forward to what’s next. To (y)our past year - being full of Sweet Memories, and the year ahead - full of Memory Making… Happy Holidays & A Happy, Healthy New Year!

Local Leaders taking on Social Responsibility while contributing to the Social Scene

nyone could have guessed that life would change for Julia Morley, new student, when she moved to Pittsburgh to study biology, with plans to continue to Medical School, eventually specializing in Emergency Medicine – earning the new title: Dr. Julia Morley, Emergency Medicine Physician. But who could have foreseen that one of the BIGGEST life changes waiting for her in the Burgh would be a middle-aged, overweight, abandoned, and homeless dog? With less than two years left in her Emergency Medicine Residency, Julia found herself at Humane Animal Rescue learning the tragic story of a “hard-to-place” Blue Merle Chihuahua named LuSeal by the staff - as a play on the traditional name Lucille. The poor girl was twice what her body weight should be, could barely walk, and because of her markings, and the way she waddled around, not to mention her large round eyes – looked like a seal. LuSeal had special needs. Julia had training. So, the two became Mother and Daughter on October 11, 2016. Being the excellent Mother/Doctor that she is, Julia consulted with several veterinary specialists to draw up a Treatment

Plan for her new child - complete with Short, Middle, and Long-Term Goals. LuSeal was put on a restricted calorie diet, and instructed to at least ATTEMPT to walk a few steps daily, while being showered with all the hugs and kisses she could stomach. Like all cool Millennial Moms, Julia started an Instagram Account to document her daughter’s progress and cuteness. And she was surprised where her path on this journey would lead, yet again! Follower Counts started climbing quickly, as Media Outlets started calling. So many were being inspired by the Slow-but-Sure progress LuSeal was making with the love and support of her mother. In just over a year together, LuSeal has lost a little over 8 pounds – HALF of her body weight, and has been declared healthy. Not only can she walk, she RUNS! And what about all the Media Calls? Doc Julia and LuSeal Dog have had their story featured on The DoDo, Right This Minute, The List (ABC), The Daily Mail, Bravo Online, Little Things, Pet Insider, Metro, FitBark

Blog, and the list continues to grow... The Mother/Daughter Duo are now advocates for Animal Fitness and Health, hosting LuSeal’s 8 Pound Party to raise funds and awareness, which was attended by several media outlets. The event included food trucks, vendor tables, fan meet ups, and of course weight checks for the pooches! So, what’s the latest LuSeal news? She celebrated her tenth birthday, posed for pics with Santa - looking quite different from last year’s shot, recently began experimenting with a GoPro to give her Fans another viewpoint, has shared that she wears a pink FitBark (like a FitBit) to gauge whether or not she could use an extra walk, found out through a DNA Test – that she is 87.5% Chihuahua, leaving the other 12.5% a mystery to be solved!, her bio has changed from “Overweight Dog” to “Fitness Model” … And her sweet journey continues with her mother’s love… Get in on the fun and see what the two are up to on Instagram. @lusealdog  SocialButterflyMagazine.com

Interview by Kiley Fischer with Introduction by Faith Bennett

Santa T

Claus

he Social Soles interview series is based on the saying, “You don’t really know someone until you have walked in his shoes.” We thought it would be interesting to begin each interview asking our guest to bring a pair of shoes that are significant to him. They can be the little ones he wore the first time he saw a winter snow; The ones he wore the day he learned that reindeer fly; The boots he wore the first time a child sat on his lap to whisper all of her heart’s desires; The pair he wore when he rode through the streets of Pittsburgh welcoming seasonal cheer; A pair we would have never guessed...What shoes will he bring?

 

We associate shoes with memories: good and bad. The question steers the path of the conversation. This route will show us a side usually not seen in the one we are talking with. A more personal side. We are excited to see in which direction we are lead – by the choice in footwear and the memories stirred. Come. Let’s take a Very, Merry walk…

Something magical happens when the December air rolls through the city. Despite the hustle and bustle, things seem quieter and more innocent. Even the Grinchiest seem to feel the spirit of the season take its hold. When we had the opportunity to speak to the Jolly Old Elf himself, we couldn't pass it up. Having Santa visit the cocoon brought all of us back to our childhoods and we hope taking a walk in his famed boots does the same for you

Social Butterfly Magazine: Santa, it's an honor to have you here today. Tell me about your shoes. Santa: They're professionally made boots, made by a company in Massachusetts. They're the most I've ever spent for shoes. I traced my feet and they measured my calves, my ankles, my toes. It took the man about three months to make them. They make shoes for Disney, for movies, pirates and clowns, too. What they signify to me is, when I was young,

you had to earn your way up to things. If you wanted to learn to play guitar, your parents would buy you the cheapest guitar there was and if you wanted a better one, you had to earn it. You got a job and made the money, you played in a band. You earned your way up. That's how I see these shoes. I’ve worked my way up to them. SBM: All I can imagine is Geppetto and elves. Santa: They’re made by genuine elves!

SBM: These boots must have been through a lot with you. What kind of memories do you have with them? Santa: Very joyful memories. I've done parades, events, the Reindeer Ball, thousands of kids have sat on my lap. They’re very, very, joyful memories. SBM: If they could talk, what kind of stories would they tell? Santa: It's really the memories. It's these children coming to see me with this wide-eyed look on their face of, "Wow, that's the real Santa Claus. He has real boots and a real beard." The fact that I'm in pictures in people's photo albums all over the world…People from all over the country come to see me in Market Square at Santa's House. Australia, London, Italy, Germany. My image is in these people's memories for years and years, it's a bit overwhelming. SBM: You are Santa. Santa: I'm Santa Claus! (His smile broadens.) Ho, ho, ho, ho! Even if it's not Christmas, I'm Santa. If a store clerk is rude to me, I'm not rude back because Santa's not rude. If someone cuts me off

in traffic, Santa isn't going to fight with anyone, it's not right. It's like being a priest. The beard is like a priest's collar. You're expected a certain conduct. People view you in a certain way and you have to live up to that. SBM: It reminds me of that scene in “The Santa Clause” where Tim Allen is just starting to change over and he's watching the soccer game and there's just a line. Do kids approach you? Santa: Not so much kids, but the parents. I'm careful not to initiate the approach. But if the parents say, "Santa's over there watching you," that's invitation to say, "I've noticed you're on the good list this year." I don't try to engage first. The closer it gets to this time of year, I get more and more double takes from the kids. I walked into a store just the other day and a man came in with his little girl and I'm trying to hide my face. I have a scarf to cover my beard and a hood to cover my hair. She saw me anyway and watched me. As I was leaving, she pointed, and yelled, "It's Santa!" She told everyone. I just looked at her, winked and left.

SBM: (laughs) That has to be fun though. Santa: It is. It really is. SBM: How does one become Santa? Santa: That's a good question. I've always loved Christmas. When my kids were little, we went to all the light shows and malls and displays. Every man has his thing. Some men like guns and they collect guns, they go hunting, they have the clothes, the cabins. Some men are into golf and they have all the clubs and memberships. Some men have trains in the basement, Lionel and the other models. They have full sets. My thing was always Christmas. Putting up lights and decorating the home. My wife and I would put pillows under the blanket when the kids were little. I would be downstairs putting toys under the tree. She would wake up the kids and say, "I hear a noise, come with me? No, don’t wake Daddy.” They would creep down the steps and my back would be to them, singing and putting toys under the tree. I'd catch them and say, “What are you doing up? You’re not supposed to be here! Oh, alright, but you can’t open anything until tomorrow!” Then I’d give them hugs and send them to bed. The next morning, they’d come down and say, “Dad, we saw Santa!” I’d shake my head and say, “Come on now, you must have been dreaming.” Continue on Page 30 

It was fun for years. I did it for nieces and nephews and neighbors, too.

about being Santa? I imagine there’s just so much.

SBM: If you could walk in someone else's shoes, whose would you want to walk in?

Years later, a friend who owned a gift shop asked me to come to their open house. It was like the magic started all over again. It felt like Santa Claus possessed my body, the spirit of Santa truly possessed me. I knew what to say, what to do.

Santa: It’s really the smiles on the kids’ faces, and the smiles on their parent's faces, too. When I'm talking with their child, asking what they want for Christmas, I see the parents going back to when they were that age and meeting Santa and how great it was for them, to be able to do that for their own children. They’re creating those memories they loved as a child for their own children.

Santa: I would like to walk in the shoes of a very, very, very old man who is still healthy, still has all his senses, and still is Santa Claus.

SBM: It has to keep you young.

SBM: I'm the Christmas nut in my house – my boyfriend pokes fun at me about it. For people who like Christmas but get a little cynical, what would you say?

Two boys were afraid of Santa, they hung back, but I charmed them and then they were laughing and playing. Their mother approached me and asked me to come to their Christmas party she was having at their house. So, I went to her house and knocked on the door, ringing jingle bells and “ho ho ho-ing.” The kids are just bouncing off the walls. I came in, posed in all their pictures, hung around with them, handed out their presents. Then I called over the adults and said, "You're never too old for a picture with Santa." We posed for photos and it was such a big hit. Now I'm on Christmas cards and ornaments and print ads. I feel like I'm everywhere. SBM: I feel like there's this magic that just comes from it naturally. Even in high school, as a moody teenager, Santa came to our house and brought candy canes and little gifts and I was completely blown away. I just said, "It's Santa!" in this awed voice. You must hear incredible stories. Santa: I could go on all day long, stories that'll make ya cry, stories that'll make ya laugh. SBM: What's the most rewarding thing

Santa: Oh, it does. SBM: What are some of the favorite stories that you've heard about yourself? Do kids tell you stories about yourself as they’re sitting on your lap? Santa: Sometimes they'll tell me "Oh, you were at my school!" And I immediately talk about how nice their teacher was and how many kids were in their class, how nice their school is. They’re delighted. SBM: On the other hand, how do you handle the kids who think you aren't the real Santa? Santa: Well, you're Kiley, right? So, if you came to me and said, "Are you the real Santa?" I'd say, "Are you the real Kiley? If you're the real you, I must be the real me." Those are the kids who are just on the edge. Then there are some kids who don't believe. You can't convince them, you can’t change their mind. I just smile.

SBM: I feel like this isn't something you give up. Santa: No, no. It goes for life.

Santa: You know, I once hated Christmas. My father was an alcoholic. He always seemed to be at his worst at the holidays. I don't really know what happened with me. It's like the Grinch - "Down in Who-ville they say, the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day." When I had my kids, I wanted them to have a better Christmas than me. But that said, Christmas growing up was a wonderland in Pittsburgh. This town… Pittsburgh is a big Christmas town. They start decorating the day after Halloween and don't take it down until the middle of January. There's a lot of Christmas nuts just like you who just get so into everything about this season and I love these people. I

get people from Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, they're saying, "They don't do this in our town. They gave up the parade years ago. They don’t have Light Up Nights and displays like this. Even here, people thought it would die when Macy's closed, but the holiday village keeps things going and there are shows on stage. There's the skating rink. People come downtown to really get that holiday going. On Light Up Night, there are seven major tree lightings downtown. Some cities don't have one! SBM: I always go back to “The Santa Clause,” because I’ve always loved the idea of a continuous passing on of the mantle of Santa, that the spirit endures while the bodies themselves may change. Santa: Have you seen “Miracle on 34th

Street”? That movie inspired me a lot. I'm walking down the street and someone sees me and I'm Santa Claus. The movie opens with him saying to a store manager saying how he has the reindeer all wrong. I do that, too. SBM: What are your favorite portrayals of Santa? Santa: I always go back to Edmund Gwenn in “Miracle on 34th Street.” He's the only actor who's won an Academy Award playing Santa. I love his gentleness, his spirit. I want people to have that moment when they meet me. Merry Christmas, everyone!  SocialButterflyMagazine.com
