As to scholarship: The graduates of no college in th e state, are rated high er or given more h earty welcome at the State Uni versity than are th ose of Bethany-Peniel College. The highest Christian experience is compatible with the high est scholastic attainment. Of course we mad e mistakes of judgment in th ose earl y clays, in our zeal to make clea r th e line of demarkati on between holin ess and worldliness. Rul es were rigidly enforced, th ough it is possible that th e restri ction s upon th e association between th e young men and young women never found complete favor. I rem ember a senior being given several demerits along with a public reprimand for walki11g at th e side of a young woman as far as his own ga te on his way home for dinn er. 'V c were fortunate in th e character of th e stud ents who ca me to us during th ose ea rly years. It was evident that th ey came with a determinati on to make the three ,,路orcls, whi ch aft erwa rds became the motto of th e college, " Character, C ulture, Christ," th e dominant forces of their ]i,路es. If it is true that "a pupil upon one end of a log and Ma rk Hopkins on th e other en d constitutes a Uni versity," it would be equall y tru e that under A. M . H ills those ea rl y pupils received an educa tion, plus an experience of holiness, that gave th em stand ing with the product of any college in路 th e land. In the nin e years of its existence prior to th e organi zing of th e C hurch of th e Nazarene at Pilot Point, it prepared young men equipped to fill any position of service or hon or in the new Church. General superintendents, district superintend ents, college (and even state un iversity) presidents and teachers, seminary fa culty, successful pastors and missionari es went forth to honor th e trai ning received at Peni el. N ot only th ese; but men who became noted in civil life received th e stamp of that early school. The law, the U . S. Congress, state legislatures, medi cine and surgery, fed eral service-many deJXIrtments of life-received honor from our b oys. W e wer poor! Not wretchedly poor, but gJoriousJv poor. I recall one T hanksgiving Day wh en th e College Secretary was bidden to ea t dinn er with th e President and his famil y, wh en th e main dish was black-eyed peas. No apology was expected or given. T he salaries of teachers- small as th ey were-were seldom if ever paid on time or in full. M y mind goes back to a time when th e local store could no longer extend credit to anyone connected with th e college, wh en electricity and gas were turned off from their homes for many clays, when the cupboard of Old Mother Hubbard had nothing on us. I think I am correct in saying that th ere is but one indi vidual left in the Church of th ose six wh o brought thi s college into existence. As he sees "' Vhat God has wrought" in the fin e buildings, university-trained teachers, ungrudging recognition from educators, and the great arm y which has gone and is going forth to "girdle the globe with salvation, with Holiness unto th e Lord," it is difficult for him to remember that there were ever hard tim es-that th e Brook Cherith ever did dry up. Instead there comes to his ears again th e shouts of victory as th e stud ents file into service from their grove and group meetings-and th e "glory of the Lord fill s the temple." HENCEFORTH : This one thing we do, forgetting those things which are behind , and reaching forth unto those things which are before, we press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
