GIVE A GIFT TO TACKLE POVERTY AND INJUSTICE AROUND THE WORLD… WWW.SALVATIONARMY.ORG.UK/JUSTGIFTS

We give gifts for a whole variety of reasons. We give them to show we care. We give them to bring joy to the receiver. We give them because ‘we saw it and thought of you’. JUST GIFTS exists so that you can show your global neighbours you care, to bring them joy. The gifts in this catalogue have been chosen to give you just a taster of the range of ways The Salvation Army is helping people to tackle their poverty and injustice in some of the poorest parts of the world.

HOW TO ORDER

Take a look through the catalogue and choose your gifts. The money you’ve given will help The Salvation Army tackle poverty and injustice around the world.

WHO’S GOT YOUR GOAT?

Order by phone, post or online (see back of catalogue for details). We’ll send you a gift card and voucher to pass on to your loved one.

The gifts in this catalogue have been chosen to give you an idea of what your money can do. We’ll always make sure that your money goes to something in the relevant area of our work, but as we always want to be led by the communities in which we’re working, it might not be used for the exact same thing as the gift you chose. However, that does mean that with this gift, unlike other types of presents you might give, it will always be exactly the right gift for the recipient – just what they need – so you don’t even have to keep the receipt!

FUNDRAISING IDEAS

WE KNOW SOME OF YOU LIKE TO USE JUST GIFTS IN YOUR FUNDRAISING, SO HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THE WAY THE MONEY YOU RAISE COULD BE USED:

This section of JUST GIFTS is a little different. The prices on this page are just guides, so don’t worry if the amount you raise is more or less than the figures given – we’ll use whatever you raise to help communities around the world to tackle poverty and injustice. Instead of receiving a gift card and voucher, you’ll get a special certificate to celebrate the amount you were able to raise. Once you’ve finished fundraising, send your money to the address on p16 (cheques should be made payable to ‘The Salvation Army’ with a cover note), or contact us on 020 7367 4777 to pay in your money over the phone.

HELP A CHILD GO TO PRIMARY SCHOOL

£190

Education is vital to protecting children from the dangers of poverty and exploitation. The Salvation Army provides education for vulnerable children in centres in places like Tanzania, where it costs £190 to provide a child with the uniforms, books and fees they need to attend school during their time at the centre.

£350

SUPPORT A MORINGA MOTHER

A Moringa Mum like Mbala needs loads more than just a tree to overcome her children’s malnutrition. It costs roughly £350 to provide a mother with all that she needs, such as training on how to grow and use the leaves, moringa powder to start using in their family meals while the trees are growing, and followup support, as well as the tree seedlings of course.

SUPPORT A VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE

£425

In the Philippines The Salvation Army is equipping community volunteers to spread awareness about trafficking and provide care and support to trafficking survivors who have returned home. You can help provide a volunteer with training and awareness-raising material, and help survivors to access the educational, medical and psychological support they need.

£878

SET UP A SAVINGS GROUP

Setting up community savings and loan groups in communities are a great way to help people identify and utilise their gifts, skills and resources. In the sprawling slum of Kibera in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, it costs £878 to set up a group, including all the business training, learning materials and mentoring support for the first year.

PROTECT A SPRING

£825

People in Kavwaya are blessed with natural springs, but when these are unprotected the water can easily be contaminated. The Salvation Army is working with communities to protect the spring and install a pipe so water can be collected before it can become contaminated. Once this is done the whole community can then access clean, safe water whenever they need it.

EVERY GIFT HAS A STORY VICKY’S STORY

Vicky’s community in Kavwaya in the Democratic Republic of Congo was concerned as they were regularly getting ill from the water collected from their local natural spring. The community members met together to work out how to address the problem. They decided to approach the local Salvation Army health clinic for assistance in tackling this issue.

neighbours. Community members collected stones and sand, and helped with the construction. Vicky supported by cooking and providing food to those involved in the construction.

‘NOW THERE ARE NO CASES OF WATER-RELATED DISEASES REPORTED AT THE HEALTH CLINIC.’

Together, they constructed a concrete protection around the spring to prevent the water from being contaminated before it could be collected by Vicky and her

Now that the community has clean water, Vicky is hopeful for the future. She is also well aware of the community’s ongoing responsibilities to maintain their protected spring: ‘I believe that if we as community members are serious about maintaining the water source, then the future for myself, my children and the whole community will be good.’

LIZA’S STORY When Liza was 15 her parents arranged her marriage and she was forced to leave school. Liza had two children within two years of getting married. Her husband soon became abusive, and also married a second wife.

She was at the brothel for a number of years and eventually became a shordarni (madam). She earned more money as a shordarni but also became addicted to drugs and alcohol.

‘LIFE BEFORE WAS DARKNESS. MY LIFE NOW IS LIGHT.’

After escaping, Liza and her children moved in with her parents and she began working in a juice factory. She worked long hours and was paid the equivalent of only £3 a day. Often buyers would come to the factory and sexually assault the women working there. Liza asked one of her neighbours for help to get another job, but instead of helping Liza, he sold her for 60,000 taka (£600) to a brothel in Jessore.

Liza’s parents both died during this time and she was left with no other family. Liza’s children were taken by her husband, where they remain. Whilst at the brothel in Jessore, Liza met community organisers from The Salvation Army’s Health Care and Counselling Centre and eventually joined the tailoring programme there.

Liza does not want to return to her former life. She said, ‘I now have a normal life thanks to the Centre. I am thankful for the help it’s given me. Life before was darkness. My life now is light.’ Liza hopes to be reunited with her children soon.

KATAMARI’S STORY

‘From my plot, I expect to harvest twice as much as I did last year. My maize is healthy and everyone is asking me what I did.’

Katamari Mary is a 50-year-old widow and mother of three children who lives on the outskirts of Kadoma in Zimbabwe. Poor rainfall, caused by climate change, meant Katamari and her neighbours were struggling to grow enough food to provide for their families. Therefore, The Salvation Army worked with the community to provide training in conservation agriculture. Katamari learned how to increase her crop yields using minimal rainfall, conserve the soil to increase production and increase her knowledge of agricultural practices.

‘I NOW KNOW WHEN TO BEST PLANT MY SEEDS.’

Katamari isn’t keeping this new knowledge all to herself; she has now trained four of her neighbours so they can reap the benefits too.

This project started by training 29 farmers in simple agriculture techniques. Thanks to each of them passing on their knowledge to others, over 500 people in this area have now increased their farming knowledge and improved their yields.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS OFFICE

WE WANT TO SEE LIFE WITH DIGNITY, equality for all people and a world without poverty and injustice. We work with developing communities to resource, empower and support them to defeat poverty, tackle injustice and enable them to build a better life and future. We are able to use our expertise to respond to the needs of communities in the best way we can and ensure that funds raised are used in the most effective way possible. You can find out more about our work by visiting www.salvationarmy.org.uk/ipo or calling us on 020 7367 4777 and requesting a copy of our DEVELOP magazine.

One of the key aspects of our work is that we empower individuals and communities to combat poverty themselves and enhance their own opportunities to bring about change. That means we believe that projects should be identified and owned by the local communities who will benefit from it. As such, we always use the money either for your chosen gift or for something else in the same specific area of work. The flexibility that this provides is invaluable in ensuring that the communities that we work with retain ownership of the project and get exactly what they need.
