Ivy was trafficked to Saudi Arabia to work as a maid. However, The Salvation Army helped Ivy return home to the Philippines, and she now visits members of her community to raise awareness of trafficking, and uses her personal story to prevent others from being tricked by traffickers.

SUPPORT A TRAFFICKING SURVIVOR Women returning home after being trafficked are often emotionally scarred by the experience. The Salvation Army is reaching out to those trafficking survivors by visiting them in their homes and offering them the care and support they need to rebuild their lives. CODE: 10087HT

The Salvation Army provides education for vulnerable children in centres in places like Tanzania, where it costs £190 to provide a child with the uniforms, books and fees they need to attend school during their time at the centre.

A Moringa Mum like Mbala needs loads more than just a tree to overcome her children’s malnutrition. It costs roughly £350 to provide a mother with all that she needs, such as training on how to grow and use the leaves, moringa powder to start using in their family meals while the trees are growing, and followup support, as well as the tree seedlings of course.

In the Philippines The Salvation Army is equipping community volunteers to spread awareness about trafficking and provide care and support to trafficking survivors who have returned home. SET UP A SAVINGS GROUP
Setting up community savings and loan groups in communities are a great way to help people identify and utilise their gifts, skills and resources. In the sprawling slum of Kibera in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, it costs £878 to set up a group, including all the business training, learning materials and mentoring support for the first year.
PROTECT A SPRING

People in Kavwaya are blessed with natural springs, but when these are unprotected the water can easily be contaminated. The Salvation Army is working with communities to protect the spring and install a pipe so water can be collected before it can become contaminated. Once this is done the whole community can then access clean, safe water whenever they need it.

Vicky’s community in Kavwaya in the Democratic Republic of Congo was concerned as they were regularly getting ill from the water collected from their local natural spring. The community members met together to work out how to address the problem. They decided to approach the local Salvation Army health clinic for assistance in tackling this issue.

She is also well aware of the community’s ongoing responsibilities to maintain their protected spring: ‘I believe that if we as community members are serious about maintaining the water source, then the future for myself, my children and the whole community will be good.’

LIZA’S STORY When Liza was 15 her parents arranged her marriage and she was forced to leave school. Liza had two children within two years of getting married. Her husband soon became abusive, and also married a second wife.
She was at the brothel for a number of years and eventually became a shordarni (madam). She earned more money as a shordarni but also became addicted to drugs and alcohol.
‘LIFE BEFORE WAS DARKNESS. MY LIFE NOW IS LIGHT.’
After escaping, Liza and her children moved in with her parents and she began working in a juice factory. She worked long hours and was paid the equivalent of only £3 a day. Often buyers would come to the factory and sexually assault the women working there. Liza asked one of her neighbours for help to get another job, but instead of helping Liza, he sold her for 60,000 taka (£600) to a brothel in Jessore.
Liza’s parents both died during this time and she was left with no other family. Liza’s children were taken by her husband, where they remain. Whilst at the brothel in Jessore, Liza met community organisers from The Salvation Army’s Health Care and Counselling Centre and eventually joined the tailoring programme there.
Liza does not want to return to her former life. She said, ‘I now have a normal life thanks to the Centre. I am thankful for the help it’s given me. Life before was darkness. My life now is light.’ Liza hopes to be reunited with her children soon.
KATAMARI’S STORY

Katamari Mary is a 50-year-old widow and mother of three children who lives on the outskirts of Kadoma in Zimbabwe. Poor rainfall, caused by climate change, meant Katamari and her neighbours were struggling to grow enough food to provide for their families. Therefore, The Salvation Army worked with the community to provide training in conservation agriculture. Katamari learned how to increase her crop yields using minimal rainfall, conserve the soil to increase production and increase her knowledge of agricultural practices.

Katamari isn’t keeping this new knowledge all to herself; she has now trained four of her neighbours so they can reap the benefits too.
This project started by training 29 farmers in simple agriculture techniques. Thanks to each of them passing on their knowledge to others, over 500 people in this area have now increased their farming knowledge and improved their yields.
