MUSTANG CLUB

DONOR &

Our athletic department – coaches, staff and administration – are committed to providing our talented student-athletes with the resources necessary to be Top 25 in EVERYTHING we do. This not only encompasses our sports programs, but also our academic support, business operations, compliance, financial aid and all administrative functions. Mustang Club donations have a direct impact on each of these areas. That is where YOU can make a difference.

Steve Orsini, Director of Athletics

2011 MUSTANG DONOR GUIDE Founded in 1935, the Mustang Club is SMU’s official athletic fundraising support organization. Its purpose is to provide the financial structure for SMU student-athletes to strive for excellence in the classroom, in competition and in life skills development. Academic support, recruiting, facility enhancements and other operational expenses are all key components of a successful athletic department. The recent growth and success of the Mustang Club has provided additional resources for each of these important areas. One goal for the 2011 Morgan Campaign (Mustang Club annual fund drive) is to use the positive momentum from recent Mustang Club success and combine it with our student-athletes’ competitive achievements in order to take the Mustang Club to new heights. EVERY donor has an impact, and EVERY dollar makes a difference. Your gift is not just a line item in the athletic budget. It is directly reinvested in our department’s most precious resource – the student-athlete.

WHERE DOES MY MUSTANG CLUB DONATION GO? Intercollegiate Athletics is often called the front porch of an institution. To maintain and enhance that high visibility, private support from alumni and friends is critical. Mustang Club donations provide SMU Athletics with the tools to support all our sports programs and talented student-athletes as they aspire to be nationally competitive in their academic and athletic endeavors.

MUSTANG CLUB DONATIONS AT WORK In the Classroom Each of SMU’s 17 teams exceeded the NCAA’s Academic Progress Report requirements for the most recently completed academic year. In addition, four teams – men’s golf, cross country, women’s swimming and women’s tennis – earned perfect scores for their work in the classroom. In Competition SMU again finished as the top-ranked Conference USA school in the 2010 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division I standings. With the win, SMU has been ranked as the best overall collegiate athletics program in its conference in 11 of the last 13 years. Mustang Football Is Back! SMU football continued its climb back to national prominence with a second consecutive bowl game. The Mustangs’ Armed Forces Bowl appearance and firstever Conference USA championship game were highlights of the 2010 season. Football fever has truly returned to the Hilltop. This brochure will help you become an active part of our Mustang team!

A donation to the Mustang Club is an investment not only in the University, but in the development of our next generation of talented leaders. It is an “investment with impact” in both SMU and Mustang Athletics.  You enjoy the fun. MUSTANG CLUB IMPACT

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

CENTER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT-ATHLETES (CDSA) One of the true areas of impact for increased Mustang Club support is our department’s Center for the Development of StudentAthletes, a priority initiative in our goal of achieving Top 25 status in everything we do.

INVESTMENT IN 17 SPORTS PROGRAMS In today’s intercollegiate athletic environment, resources are precious, and acquisition is competitive. In addition to the CDSA initiative, Mustang Club gifts provide our coaches an edge in improving the competitive environment of their program – whether it is enhanced recruiting efforts, increased operational dollars for team travel and equipment or other identified program needs.

With our institution’s commitment to the success of our student-athletes and their progress toward an SMU degree, coupled with NCAA eligibility standards designed to continue bolstering academic achievement, the need for student-athlete mentoring is stronger than ever. Mustang Club donations directly enhance CDSA operations. The SMU Center for the Development of Student-Athletes is devoted to cultivating the complete student-athlete experience. At its core, CDSA is a mentoring program. The CDSA staff’s mentoring philosophy is to motivate, encourage and empower student-athletes so they can maximize their academic and athletic potential.

To keep pace with our peer institutions and the other institutions we compete with for Top 25 status, the need to maintain, upgrade and/or expand our athletic footprint is crucial. There are always unbudgeted and unanticipated expenses associated with providing our studentathletes the best competitive experience possible. Without Mustang Club donations, these opportunities would not be possible.

“From wonderful coaches and success on the diving board, to excellent professors, to being involved in the community, I am equipped with the skills necessary to start a career outside the pool. Thank you, Mustang Club donors.” Audra Egenolf
