THOUGHT LEADERS Eight SMU students earned invitations to the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting in 2016. Hosted by former president Bill Clinton and his family, the annual gathering brings together some of the brightest minds in the world. From teaching K-12 students social entrepreneurship to helping victims of domestic abuse, SMU students were among the thought leaders taking meaningful, measurable steps to confront global challenges.
PUBLIC SERVICE SMU invests in underserved West Dallas communities through The School Zone – West Dallas, a flagship project of the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development’s Budd Center: Involving Communities in Education. Through research and learning service overseen by The Budd Center, SMU students and faculty come up with solutions to the challenges created by poverty. smu.edu/simmons SMU students also work in diverse public service internships through the Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility to make an impact locally and across continents. Their recent efforts have run the gamut of interning at Bryan’s House, a nonprofit organization that cares for children affected by HIV/AIDS in West Dallas, to volunteering in Costa Rica at a government-supported community center for the elderly. Through Alternative Breaks SMU students participate in direct community service MEANINGFUL opportunities across the country and around the world. Recently, students BREAKS traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to volunteer at Crisis Nursery, which provides temporary care for young children to help prevent child abuse and neglect. smu.edu/ab SMU students also use academic breaks to take journeys into history. Recently, as part of the annual SMU Civil Rights Pilgrimage, SMU students visited civil rights landmarks, including the Jackson, Mississippi, home of Medgar Evers. This is where TI engineers developed the idea of an integrated circuit that would become the microchip and change the way humans live, work and play.

SUBTERRANEAN DISCOVERY In the midst of heightened local and national concerns over the increasing evidence of earthquakes in the U.S., timely research by the SMU seismology team revealed the location and depth of a geologic fault, an important step in investigating what might have triggered recent earthquakes in North Texas and Central Oklahoma. SMU installed more than 20 monitors, supplied by the U.S. Geological Survey and the academic consortium Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), to provide enhanced mapping that enables Irving and Dallas city officials to assess potential municipal hazards. blog.smu.edu/research

Fred Chang, director of SMU’s Darwin Deason Institute for Cyber Security and former director of research for the National Security Agency, was recently elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. The recognition highlights SMU’s important research to help advance the science of cyber security and dedication to training a workforce of skilled cyber defenders.
