In 2005, through the generosity of the Roosevelt Family, the St. Mark’s bell tower was outfitted with a Carillon. Today, we enjoy the ringing of the bells on a daily basis, as they mark the passage of the day at 10600 Preston Road. In 1964, a young Renaissance man biked onto the St. Mark’s campus to teach drama, and would go on to recruit legendary faculty members, inspire hundreds of young artists, and spawn a world-class Fine Arts program. We owe a debt of gratitude to the many (above) A view from the bell tower.

It’s hard to believe that we have less than three months until its completion and our goal of $110 Million is realized. Thanks to the continuing generosity of an anonymous donor, St. Mark’s christened the newest scull in its rowing fleet, the William Forteith ’96, named in honor of the former student, crew coach, and faculty member. Standing before a crowd of family, friends, students, and alumni, Will offered his thanks and gratitude to the anonymous donor who has continued to support and strengthen the rowing program at St. Mark’s. He also challenged the current team attending the christening to row true and push themselves to become better men both on and off the water. After graduating from St. Mark’s, Will rowed for Cornell University’s Lightweight Crew. After earning his master’s in English and teaching for several years, he returned to 10600 Preston Road and eventually became Assistant Head of Middle School. During Will’s tenure as crew coach, the team won several state championship titles and competed in the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championship, finishing sixth in the nation.

CURTAIN CALL Revival and Tribute to Beloved Director

It is hard to imagine St. Mark’s without a Fine Arts Program. Today, the campus is filled with young Marksmen sketching charcoal drawings of the Chapel, rehearsing Shakespeare in the amphitheater, and practicing violin outside the band hall. But there was a time when music, theater, and art were not components of a Marksman education. That all changed on one fateful day in February 1964, when a young artist and scholar named Tony Vintcent bicycled into Dallas. His bicycle gave out in front of an all-boys prep school at 10600 Preston Road. He parked his bike, and for nearly a decade, Vintcent called St. Mark’s his home. As Vintcent settled into campus as a teacher and the “Pied Piper of Davis Hall,” he approached St. Mark’s Headmaster Chris Berrisford with a simple and somewhat theatrical request: “Please, sir, I want some more.” But unlike the cruel cook in Oliver Twist, Mr. Berrisford saw the vision that Tony had for the School and offered Mr. Vintcent far more than just another spoonful of gruel. From that conversation, the modern Fine Arts Department was born. Vintcent was later named the School’s first Fine Arts Department Chair Tony A. Vintcent

and under his reign the arts became a central pillar of the St. Mark’s education. During his years, numerous legendary teachers found a home at 10600 Preston Road. Some, including Alice Oltrogge,

Bill Kysor, and Mary Ann Livengood, are still at St. Mark’s, teaching boys how to draw, sculpt, and sing. More than that, the boys learned how to dream. During his nearly 10 years at St. Mark’s, Vintcent’s teaching and passion inspired hundreds of young men. Vintcent’s lasting impression was also felt by an intimate group of 200 student actors and actresses who comprised the Harlequin Players. From 1965 to 1972,

During their eight-season run, the Harlequin Players produced dozens of plays with the help of hundreds of students. When you consider all of the photos, playbills, newspaper reviews, rosters, and reunions, it adds up to a lot of media. In 2012, as the Harlequins prepared their reunion to honor Tony Vintcent, member Michael Jung ’72 conceived a plan to organize and curate all of the media surrounding the company and their performances. Working with Michael, St. Mark’s Office of Development & Alumni Relations created a special page on the School’s website dedicated to the Harlequin Players. Users can now browse through each season and view photos, programs, news clippings, and summaries of each production, as well as the four reunions held since 1985. A full roster also lists every member of the company, with special pages dedicated to Tony Vintcent and Bill Hootkins ’66, who went on to big-screen fame, appearing in Indiana Jones, Batman, and Star Wars.

Anthony A. Vintcent Fine Arts Endowment St. Mark’s School of Texas is pleased to announce the establishment of the Anthony A. Vintcent Fine Arts Endowment with foundational gifts totaling nearly $300,000. This Fund pays tribute to Tony Vintcent, former member of the St. Mark’s Faculty, Fine Arts Department Chair, and Director of the summer stock Harlequin Players. Mr. Vintcent’s teaching style and energy positively influenced the lives of generations of young aspiring artists, and his legacy extends throughout St. Mark’s, the Dallas community, and the acting community across the nation. The Anthony A. Vintcent Fine Arts Endowment is permanently endowed and designated to support the St. Mark’s faculty. Funds like this enable St. Mark’s to recruit and retain the best teachers in the world and make important investments in their professional development. These resources allow faculty members to pursue their interests and passions and remain at the top of their craft. Teachers then return to campus with new skills and fresh perspectives to share with colleagues and students alike.

St. Mark’s School of Texas

Mike Shampain ’61: Menter B. Terrill Society Mike “Mickey” Shampain ’61 has fond memories of his time at 10600 Preston Road. “I greatly enjoyed the fellowship with classmates, friends, and with teachers,” Mike recalls. “The structure, the classes, the opportunity to participate in a range of activities, not to mention the effect that St. Mark’s had on my spiritual side — the School did a great deal for me, and I appreciate the philosophy of building the boy into a complete man.” Since Mike graduated in 1961, he has enjoyed staying connected to his classmates through events and reunions, particularly his 50th Reunion. “The Reunion just felt like we picked up where we left off. The fellowship and camaraderie that our class felt while we were in school was still present, 50 years later. I think coming back together gave us all an even greater appreciation for our time at St. Mark’s,” Mike says. He decided to honor his father’s and mother’s memory by creating the Shampain Family Scholarship in 1998 with an outright gift to the Campaign for St. Mark’s. Through their many volunteer efforts in the Nashville community, Mike and his wife, Pam, saw many bright students who never received the opportunities to advance their education, so they wanted to provide those opportunities for students at St. Mark’s. “Pam and I came to realize just how much St. Mark’s does to shape lives, and we wanted to be a part of that process,” Mike says. As members of the Menter B. Terrill Society, Mike and Pam have included St. Mark’s in their estate plans, ensuring that the School will continue to benefit from their generosity and that the Shampain Family Scholarship will continue to grow. St. Mark’s has established the Menter B. Terrill Society to honor alumni and friends who have included St. Mark’s in their long-term estate planning. Terrill Society members who are at least 65 years of age will be recognized in The Centennial Challenge if they notify the School of their intentions. If you have included St. Mark’s in your estate plans or would like more information about the Menter B. Terrill Society, please contact Scott Jolly in the Office of Development at 214.346.8123 or jollys@smtexas.org.
