LIBRARY BUILDING PROJECT
The DCL Board of Trustees has approved the preliminary schematic design presented in a report by King & King architects on June 4, 2015. You can read the entire Schematic Design on the DCL Building Project website: dewhome.wordpress.com Visit the site to view preliminary renderings and floor plans, the Traffic Impact Assessment Report from GTS Consulting and the Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment Report, and more. Check the web site often for new information and to sign up for email updates.
We’ve also set up a new display in the library with information and the preliminary renderings and will update it as the project progresses. DCL WELCOMES NEW TRUSTEES The DCL Board of Trustees elected three new trustees at its May 2015 Board Meeting. The trustees have been elected provisionally for three year terms pending a vote in the 2016 Annual Meeting. The new trustees bring a wealth of experience and skills to the Board, and the library is delighted to welcome them as we move forward with the building project. Jill Enright has varied experience as an environmental planner and project manager, a natural resources specialist, and a mechanical engineer, with extensive experience in U.S. Navy and Marine Corps projects and installations. A resident of Jamesville, Jill is also an active member of the Jamesville Elementary Parent Teachers Group. Before joining the Board of Trustees, Jill was a volunteer on the DCL Board Design Working Group.
Douglas Arena is a project architect with Bell & Spina P.C. with an expertise in building envelope systems. In 2009, he and his family moved to DeWitt for the fresh air and space, and closer proximity to family in upstate NY. Doug volunteers his time as co-chair of the building and grounds committee at All Saints Church and participates in his neighborhood association. Shelly Field, a seasoned author and presenter, is President and CEO of two organizations: the Shelly Field Organization, a public relations, marketing and management firm, and; Shelly Field Organization Life Coaching and Stress Management Services. Shelly also has extensive experience working with non-profits and community groups, including serving as trustee on the DCL Friends of the Library Board.
DCL WELCOMES NEW OUTREACH LIBRARIAN The DCL is pleased to announce that Nancarrow Brown has joined the DCL as the new part-time Outreach Librarian. Nan has a BA from SUNY ESF, an MS in Education from LeMoyne, and a brand new MSLIS from the SU iSchool. In addition to experience as a teacher, Nan has significant library experience, including: circulation, reference and reader’s advisory, and
children’s and teen programming. The DCL welcomes Nan in her new role.

DEWITT TEEN RECEIVES NYS VIDEO CHALLENGE PRIZE Karen Balsen, coordinator of the Summer Reading Program at the NYS Department of Education, presented Athena Summers the award for winning the 2015 New York State Teen Video Challenge at the DCL’s Summer Reading Kick-Off Party on June 29th. Emma Wilson, who appeared in the video, also received recognition. The Mayor of East Syracuse Robert T. Tackman attended the event and spoke briefly in honor of Athena’s achievement. Athena’s video, “Unmask Your Imagination” was filmed at the DeWitt Community Library as part of the DCL’s new Digital Production Club (DPC). Upcoming programs hosted by the DPC include Digital Reader’s Theater, Stop Motion Animation, Comic Creation, and Slow Motion Video Fun.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW Long-time DeWitt Community Library employee, Paralibrarian and author Brian Abbott, has one mystery novel out and more on the way. His book Death On Stoneridge is the first in a series set right here in Syracuse, NY. Recently, I took the opportunity to ask Brian a few questions. Will you tell us a little about your mystery novel Death On Stoneridge? Death on Stoneridge is set in Syracuse, circa 1987. Residents of the fictional Stoneridge Drive are “on edge” because of a suicide and a recent string of burglaries. After a Neighborhood Watch meeting, gunshots are heard. Has crime escalated to murder?

It was sort of a natural progression that I turned to crafting such stories. What are you currently working on? Too many things! I’m mainly focusing on edits to Death at Danforth House, my second novel in the Syracuse Mystery series. Then I have to finish revising my third novel in the series.

The Friends of the DCL show their continued support of the Summer Reading Program by sponsoring educational and entertaining events at the library. This year’s summer reading theme “Every Hero Has a Story” focuses on heroes— everyday and super. Kids will learn about the heroic legends of Hercules, find heroes in the library with Moreland the Magician, open Aunt Helen’s Closet for a journey, and discover adventures in the wilderness with the Adirondack Museum. Other entertainment includes, Dan the Snakeman, Music with Donna B, Puppets with Pizzazz, and Bubblemania. Show times vary so consult the DCL summer program guide for details.
