EWCASTLE-under-Lyme Colllege (NULC) is opening a shop in Newcastle town centre.

The shop named M.A.D.E Here – which stands for Media, Art and Design Enterprise – is a creative enterprise featuring authentic handmade gifts and artwork from students and artists connected to the College.

Following the success of a pop-up shop in the town centre last year, the College has been in talks with the Newcastle-under-Lyme Town Partnership and negotiated a 12 month lease for a large empty unit in Lancaster Buildings.

Deb Hilditch, Curriculum Manager at the College, said:“The new shop will complement the town centre, being a hub for creative people where you can browse and shop for unique handmade items as well as taking part in workshops and getting advice on the range of courses available at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

“We’re planning to run one day courses in a range of creative areas, as well as regular weekly sessions where members of the public can explore their creative side or learn a new hobby.”

The College is currently renovating the unit which will sell various artwork and handcrafted gifts including Photography, Jewellery, Ceramics, Prints, Cards, Glassware, Textiles and Soft Furnishings.

The shop will also be offering a programme of activities, workshops and creative courses for people of all ages, allowing members of the public the opportunity to get in touch with their creative side, as well as getting an understanding of the wide range of other opportunities available at the College.

Lifelong Learning New shop opens up in town centre Continued from page one NULC has a national reputation for the quality of its art, design and media courses, with former students going to achieve notable success, including Dave Hughes who set up his own graphic design business elloDave, Pete Bebb who won an OSCAR for his work on the film Inception, Hannah Stoney who launched the Yellowstone Art Boutique at the Trentham Estate and Matthew Miller who has designed clothing for the Scissor Sisters.

Deb continued: “Newcastle-under-Lyme College is committed to supporting the local creative industries and keen to champion the fantastic work produced by creatives from across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire.

“The shop will provide job opportunities and allow current creative students to gain valuable employability skills by exhibiting and selling their creations.”

The shop is scheduled to open during the summer.

Helping thousands to secure formal qualifications RESEARCH from the Office of National Statistics shows that nearly 80,000 people in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire have no formal qualifications.

This year Newcastle-under-Lyme College has expanded its provision for adult learners with a range of new and exciting courses aimed at improving the skills of local adults.

The College has invested significant

resources in to its adult provision to ensure that local community needs are being met.

Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive at NULC said:“Here at NULC we constantly strive to improve our standard of education. We’re dedicated to developing our provision for local adults with a range of interesting courses.”

Karen added:“We’re extremely successful in our provision for 16 to 18

year-olds and we want to transfer that success to local adults as well.

“The range of courses on offer this year is fantastic, we’ve got community learning courses, Higher Education courses and workplace training. There is a real broad range with something to appeal to everyone.”

Success is the icing

ON THE CAKE GAYNOR Scott aged 33 from Hanford has launched her own business having completed a course at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

Gaynor enrolled on the Cake Decorating and Sugarcraft evening course at the College in January and is now in the process of launching her own cake business called Gaynor's Cake Creations in Hanford.

The married mum of two talks about her journey:“The course has given me a lot of confidence and I’ve been encouraged to develop my own ideas. My family are really proud of me and happy that I’ve found a career doing something I love.”

Since completing the course, Gaynor has gained the practical skills needed to turn the hobby in to a professional business.“Setting up a new business has been daunting, there is so much to organise like speaking to the council, arranging inspections and organising finances but it will definitely be worth it.”

Gaynor describes why learning a new skill is beneficial “The biggest reward is seeing people’s faces when they see their finished cake. Sometimes they don’t believe it’s a real edible cake!”

Gaynor advises other adults who are considering learning a new skill or hobby to “Do it! Why not! The College is so relaxed and it doesn’t event feel like you’re learning or in an education environment. The College facilities are amazing, much different to when I was teenager.”

NULC teacher training course achieves 100 per cent pass rate success A TEACHER training course at NULC has achieved 100 per cent pass rate.

The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS), offered in partnership with Staffordshire University, provides learners with a qualification that will allow employment in a full teaching role within the Lifelong Learning Sector and could contribute to gaining Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status with the Institute for Learning.

The group of 14 learners teach on a wide variety of courses including hair, beauty, cookery, languages, construction, ICT, dance, learning support, functional skills and photography. The committed group have worked extremely conscientiously over the past two years and have passed all their assignments first time with excellent overall grades.

Jeanette Connor, tutor for the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, said:“I‘m tremendously proud of all my learners. The course is academically rigorous and requires considerable dedication and commitment from learners. So I’m delighted we’ve achieved a 100 per cent pass rate first time, everyone has worked extremely hard and deserves their successes.”

Learners will take part in a graduation ceremony on Wednesday 10 July.

Business Secretary Vince Cable congratulates VQ Learner of the Year 2012 award winner Dave Hughes from Newcastle-under-Lyme.

It’s never to late to learn life-changing skills MATURE student, Joseph Smith, aged 70 from Audley enrolled onto the Skills for Life course in English and in maths after years of struggling with reading, writing and working out numbers.

Joseph, who went to work in the pit straight from school has always felt embarrassed and different because he needed help with English and maths skills.

He said:“I was ashamed to say I couldn’t read or write before studying the course. I was so scared of even walking through the College’s entrance but after completing the

course, I have no regrets at all. Now, my family are proud of what I have accomplished and I am too.

“It has increased my confidence and I have met some amazing people.” The College offers a range of courses in Skills for Life for those who struggle with reading, writing, spelling and numbers.

Joseph added:“I would strongly urge anybody who struggles to enrol on the course.

The staff are really friendly and supportive and it is so different than school. It has changed my life.”

Adult Advice & Enrolment

College loans can help ease financial burden ADULTS looking to further their education at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) could be entitled to an Advanced Learning Loan to cover the cost of their course.

The new 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is a government initiative to help adults aged 24 or over to further their education and in turn their career prospects. The loan covers the cost of courses at Level 3 or above from 1 August 2013.

Most learners aged 24 or over studying towards a Level 3 qualification or above will be eligible to receive a loan. The loan is easy to apply for, household income is not taken into account and there is no credit check.

Repayments for the loan will not commence until learners are earning at least £21,000 per annum and the monthly repayments are based on your income. Payments are automatically taken by employers from salary earnings in the same way as tax and national insurance contributions.

Janet Scrivens, Head of Lifelong Learning at NULC said:“The new Advanced Learning Loans mean adults are now able to re-enter education and improve their employment and earning opportunities.”

She continued:“The introduction of the loans should help address some of the employment issues in the local area which is really positive.”

Level 3 or above qualifications include A levels, Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates, Advanced/Higher Apprenticeships and NVQs. If the loan is to cover the cost of an Access to HE Diploma and the learner progresses onto and completes a HE course the loan is completely written off.

LOCAL adults who want to study part-time are being invited to attend an Advice and Enrolment Event at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC).

Prospective students are being advised to visit the College’s main campus at Knutton Lane on Thursday 29 August from 2pm-8pm to talk to expert careers staff and tutors about the options available.

The College is offering a wide variety of courses both at its main campus on Knutton Lane and in community venues across the Borough.

Part-time courses are available in areas such as accounting, art and

design, photography, hairdressing, computing, teaching, horticulture and DIY, first aid, beauty and holistic therapies, construction, sport and fitness, electrical installation, languages, music, maths and English and management.

Adults already in employment can also consider doing on-the-job NVQ training in subjects including business, retail, health and social care, warehousing and many more.

The College also runs a highly popular Access to Higher Education course which provides a pathway for adults who want to study at university-level but don’t have the formal qualifications needed.

Apprenticeships & Work-based Training SUCCESS STORY Abbie lands a role at College NEWCASTLE-under-Lyme College (NULC) leads its Apprenticeship campaign by example by employing their own Apprentice.

Abbie Jackson aged 17 from Knutton has been taken on as an Apprentice in the College’s successful Academy of Sport department and is studying NVQ Level 2 in Sports and Sports Coaching.

Abbie will be working 4 days a week in the office helping to run the Academy of Sport programmes and providing logistical and administrative support. Abbie is a keen sports person and plays for the College’s netball and basketball academies.

Abbie said:“I’m hoping to achieve my NVQ Level 2 in Sports and Sports Coaching and then progress onto NVQ Level 3. My ambition is to become a sports coach and maybe go onto teach.”

Vicky Boulton-Clarke, Head of Employer Engagement and Work Based Learning at NULC said:“It’s important for employers to know that we are committed to Apprenticeships.

Our Apprentices really are the future of our business and we have some very high-calibre employees who started with us as Apprentices.”

NULC currently provides Apprenticeships in more than a dozen areas including Accounting, Business and Administration, Construction, Childcare, Creative Studies, Electrical Installation, Engineering, Hairdressing, Health and Social Care, Retail and IT.

SUCCESS STORY Learning boosts care for wife ATHANASIOUS Kalafatis, aged 59, from Trent Vale is studying an Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care. Athanasious is a Home Haemodialysis Support Worker for his wife and is her main carer. He completed an NVQ in Health and Social Care at level 2 before progressing onto his current course.

Athanasious said:“I decided to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship on the advice of my tutor and because of the care and dialysis nursing with my wife. ” Athanasious has offered to do voluntary work at the NHS Home Haemodialysis department as a Group Leader so he can help and train families in need of support.

Athanasious added:“The training has meant that my knowledge has increased and I am better able to handle any issues that may arise. My self-confidence has increased and when I finish the course I will be much more qualified to nurse my wife.”

EWCASTLE-under-Lyme College (NULC) has launched an online publication to dispel myths about Apprenticeships.

The Apprenticeships Myth Buster is targeted at local employers and aims to addresses common misconceptions about Apprenticeships.

Vicky Boulton-Clarke, Head of Employer Engagement and Work Based Learning at NULC said: “One of the most common myths surrounding Apprenticeships is that young people have no work ethic and will leave the organisation before the Apprenticeship finishes. In actual fact in today’s economic climate, young people understand that Apprenticeships are a valuable opportunity.”

“We really need to break down these misconceptions of Apprenticeships and in a bid to do that we’ve put together a myth busting publication that is available on the College’s website for employers to download free of charge. The Apprentices from Newcastle-under-Lyme College are highly motivated, keen to learn and have the potential to become ‘managers of the future’.”

NULC works with more than 400 businesses across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent who work with the College to provide Apprenticeships and recruitment services.

The recruitment process for employers wishing to appoint an Apprentice involves a full screening process to ensure that the Apprentice is the best person for the job.

Apprenticeship leads to full-time career AN adult apprentice from Newcastle-under-Lyme College has secured full-time employment with a local business having completed her Apprenticeship.

Yolanda Mainwaring aged 20 from Alsager, proved to be the model apprentice for local engineering firm, Langley Alloys, which have now employed Yolanda as a full-time Operations Administrator.

Yolanda – a former Alsager High School pupil – said: “The College provided guidance and support in the various sectors that Apprenticeships are available in and helped me to find a placement at Langley Alloys.

“Through doing an Apprenticeship I was able to earn a

SUCCESS STORY Kayleigh finds a new vocation KAYLEIGH Condliffe aged 26 from Biddulph has learning difficulties and left school with no qualifications.

Wanting to change her life, she enrolled at Newcastle-under-Lyme College in September 2012 choosing to study the Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People’s Workforce.

Kayleigh is a Voluntary Assistant at Staffordshire Moorlands Childrens Centre in Biddulph, where she works two days a week supporting staff with daily activities and interacting with children.

“I’m delighted that I have achieved my Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People’s

weekly wage whilst learning in a real working environment.”

Langley Alloys, based in Newcastle-under-Lyme was founded in 1938 and has a worldwide reputation for inventing and supporting advanced stainless steels, nickel and bronze alloys.

Operations Director of Langley Alloys, Mike Hickman said:“Our philosophy is to invest in the local area, particularly with young people. Yolanda was our third apprentice and the second from Newcastle-under-Lyme College. We have been very impressed with the service we received from the College in terms of recruitment and also ongoing support for Yolanda.

In fact, employing our Apprentices in partnership with

Reflecting on choosing to study an Apprenticeship, Yolanda said: “Studying an Apprenticeship has changed my life. Apprenticeships are a fantastic alternative to academic study and provide you with on the job experience which is relevant to the work place.”

MARLENA Wojcicka moved to the UK eight years ago and was working in a local distribution centre when she decided to enrol at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

Marlena, aged 27 from Newchapel enrolled on the Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People’s Workforce, before progressing on to the Level 3 Diploma where she completed assessments of young people, planning activities, safeguarding, work placement and health and safety. Marlena said:“It was my dream to work with children. The school where my first child went to encouraged me to apply to Newcastle-under-Lyme College and I haven’t looked back!”

The mum of two has also received support from the College with her literacy and numeracy, gaining a Level 2 Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy. Marlena has now gained a job as the Senior Play Leader at Maryhill Primary School’s Pre-School. “I absolutely love doing the job and feel I now have a job which will enable me to work and support children. I’m also able to support my own children better.”

Apprenticeships are traditionally offered in subject areas such as Engineering, Hairdressing and Brickwork but subjects including Creative Design, Pharmacy and Retail are becoming increasingly popular

because of the shift in industry markets.

Support boosts Paulo’s business PAOLO Loraso is the owner of Paolo Loraso Photography based at Trentham Lakes. Paolo has been running the company for over 20 years providing customers across Staffordshire and Cheshire with premium quality photography. Paolo employs four people and has employed his first apprentice through Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

He explained what he likes about employing an Apprentice:“They’re young, enthusiastic and willing to learn, and you also get all the assistance and support from the College and their Business team meaning it’s a win win situation.

“Through employing an Apprentice I have increased our team and can train new employees at a lower cost. As a business we can take more risks expanding as we have 12 months to secure enough work before choosing to employ the Apprentice permanently.

“The end result is I’ve got a well-trained employee who totally appreciates the full-time job she will soon be in because of her Apprenticeship.”

Paolo advises other employers to “Go for it”.

“It’s helped us no end,” he added.

First Apprentice points the way to fresh ideas and investment at signmaking designer SIGNABILITY – a signmaking, graphic design and print business based in Hanford, Stoke-on-Trent – has employed its first Apprentice through NULC. Director Adrian Wakefield said:“We wanted to bring fresh ideas into our company and we wanted somebody that we could train from the ground up.”

The company was supported

through the Apprenticeship recruitment process by the College’s Employer Engagement team, which saw Creative Apprentice Esther Moore, aged 19 from Tunstall selected.

Adrian said:“Taking on an Apprentice has meant that the business is best placed to win contracts as we’re able to employ more staff and reinvest in machinery and tools and in doing so improve the business.”

“We’re giving an individual a start in the business and feel that we can make a difference in an otherwise difficult world.”

Esther completed a BTEC in Art and Design prior to her Apprenticeship and describes her motivations for becoming an Apprentice:“I felt that I would benefit more from getting hands on job experience and that it would give me a better chance of employment.”

Workforce inspired by new learner Samantha White is the owner of Samirayz Hair Studio in Trent Vale, she employs Apprentice Naomi Howlett aged 19 who currently studying a Level 3 NVQ in Hairdressing.

A strong supporter of the initiative, Samantha said: “Apprenticeships are the future for all businesses.

It’s a professional way to increase employment and business. As a professional myself I am able to pass on my skills and professionalism to aspiring hairdressers.

“I can teach my Apprentice all the skills that they need, plus they also inspire us with their education.

It’s fabulous to watch a student grow in their career and more to the point, to have the reward in them

becoming a successful stylist.”

“I have always employed Apprentices and they have kept me and my business afloat, they’re a great part of the foundations of any business and without them my business wouldn’t survive.”

“The College is professional and works along with the salon understanding the industry and providing guidance and support.”

Naomi, from Clayton gives her opinion on Apprenticeships:“I chose an Apprenticeship because I think you learn more and gain a real understanding of the industry you want to work in. I like everything about being an Apprentice, I love the learning and how practical it is.”

Moving back into full-time learning

Courses help students tap creative urges

KATE Windsor, aged 43 from Penkhull signed up to the College’s Creative Experience in February 2012 and hasn’t looked back.

Kate, mum to Finn aged SUCCESS STORY seven, completed the five week Creative Experience, where students have the opportunity to learn creative techniques in textiles, photography, print making, jewellery design, ceramics and more. She re-enrolled on the course twice more, as she enjoyed it so much. After 15 weeks studying the Creative Experience and honing her skills, Kate decided to take the plunge in to full-time education.

“In a short time I realised that an evening class was not enough and I applied for the full-time Foundation degree in Contemporary Art Practice at the College’s University Centre.”

WITH handmade and homemade trends increasing in popularity in 2013, Newcastle-under-Lyme College has a series of part-time courses for adults to explore their creative side.

People across the nation have sharpened their needles and dusted off their bobbins having been spurred on by BBC2’s The Great British Sewing Bee. This year has continued to see handmade champions such as Kirstie Allsopp with her Homemade Home and Mary Berry with the Great British Bake Off. Deb Hilditch, Curriculum Manager for Art and Creative Studies, said:“The resurgence in handmade crafts and homemade gifts will continue to be bang on trend throughout 2013.

“Whether you’re upcycling furniture, hand making soft furnishings or whipping up a storm in the kitchen, there really is nothing better than the pride you feel having completed a project.

“The creative courses available at Newcastle-under-Lyme College allow adults of all abilities to try their hand at a range of creative practices including glassware, screen printing, photography and jewellery making.

“Whether you want to explore your creative side as a hobby, gain a recognised qualification or launch your own creative business, there are a range of courses available to study part-time around your current home and work commitments.”

Floristry courses are

blooming great NEWCASTLE-under-Lyme College is expanding its creative courses by introducing courses for adults in Floristry.

The College is running various courses for adults of all abilities who are interested in exploring their creative side from its onsite floristry shop ‘Transform Flowers’.

Louise Johnson, Floristry lecturer at NULC, said:“The new floristry courses will provide practical and fun sessions for anyone with a creative flair who wants to have a go at making their own gifts and displays for a range of occasions.

It’s also a great way for like-minded individuals to come together to share their ideas.”

Following the success of a

Adults flock to sign up for fun, practical sessions number of one-off workshops specially for Christmas and Easter, learners can now enrol on the Creative Experience Workshop for Floristry, the five week Create course for Floristry or even apply for a full-time Level 1 or Level 2 Diploma in Floristry, which is what Jane Hodgetts, aged 46, from Chesterton did.

Jane explains how the course has changed her life “My confidence has improved immensely and I really enjoy being out of the house and around

different people.

“The course has motivated me in all aspects of my life, I’ve got a positive outlook on life and ready to achieve my dreams.”

Jane explains what motivated her to return to education:“The thought of walking away with a vocational certificate and being qualified to work for myself as a professional florist.”

Degree sparks jewellery launch AMY Ostrouchow, aged 22, from Longton runs her own jewellery business having completed a degree at Newcastle-under-Lyme SUCCESS STORY College.

Amy achieved a 2:1 Foundation degree in Contemporary Art Practice in 2012.

Having completed her studies Amy launched Riggi Design – a jewellery making business which specialises in creating unique handmade laser cut pieces, all unique.

Amy’s beautiful designs were featured in the College’s pop-up shop in Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre during Christmas and were a best seller, with people from across Staffordshire snapping up her designs which cost from as little as £5.00.

Amy said:“I loved the atmosphere and social life at the College, there was always someone there to talk to and we all inspired one another. I developed more socially, made contacts in the art world and started researching and experimenting into what it would be like for me to have my own business, asking would it be successful.”

ARRATT Homes’ continuing association with Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is paying dividends for construction students.

Barratt has confirmed two students from the College’s acclaimed construction courses have been employed as Apprentices to work at the Heritage Park site in Silverdale.

Alex Prince, aged 19, a bricklaying student from Blurton, and Liam Bradbury, aged 18, a joinery student from Hanford, have been employed by Barratt to work on the development of 148 new two, three and four bedroom houses.

Phil Torr, Contract Manager for Barratt Manchester, said: “It’s good to see the partnership coming to fruition, for Barratt and for the College. Alex and Liam are two excellent Apprentices and I’m sure with the practical knowledge and skills they’ve gained at the College they’ll prove an asset to us for years to come.”

Alex, a former Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy pupil, was part of the winning team in Barratt Challenge 2012, where he met HRH the Duke of York.

Alex joined NULC in 2009 where he has studied Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, Level 1 and Level 2 Diploma in Brickwork, before progressing on to an Apprenticeship.

Alex now works full-time for Barratt as an

APPRENTICE DUO Apprentice, giving him on the job practical experience and allowing him to earn while he learns.

Alex said:“Through Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s partnership with Barratt I’ve been able to take part in the Barratt Challenge and showcase my skills to the top bosses at Barratt.

“I’ve since started a full-time Apprenticeship with Barratt through the College, which I’m delighted about and it allows me to work for one of the best construction firms in the country whilst still learning.”

Liam, a former pupil at Trentham High School, has progressed from Level 1 joinery qualifications through to Level 3 where he is currently studying the Level 3 Diploma in Site Joinery whilst being employed by Barratt.

Students prepare for housebuilding contest challenge CONSTRUCTION students from Newcastle-underLyme College (NULC) are taking part in the Barratt Challenge where they have been commissioned to build replica houses.

Dave Matthews, Lecturer in Brickwork at the College, said:“The students are thrilled to be working so closely with Barratt and very excited to impress the judges and showcase their industry standard skills.”

Students studying bricklaying, joinery, painting and decorating and electrical installation were invited to take part in the Challenge as part of the Colleges partnership with one of the country’s leading house builders. Students will work in teams and have four weeks to produce their entries.

The final builds will be judged by senior managers from Barratt and representatives from the National House-Building Council.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College currently offers full-time, part-time and Apprenticeship courses in Brickwork, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical Installation and Painting and Decorating.

Employment and Training Centre New skills can help impress employers THE Steps 2 Work programme, operated from the College’s Employment and Training Centre on Knutton Lane, is designed to help people who are out of work to develop their existing skills and gain additional vocational qualifications to help them back into employment.

Candidates are encouraged to undertake short vocational training courses. There is also a specially tailored programme for lone parents returning to work.

To be eligible for the free training and support on offer, people must be aged 19 or over and claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), ESA or other work-related benefits.

AN adult learner from Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC) Steps 2 Work programme has secured full-time employment just one month after completing the employability course.

Jason Perks, aged 45 from Tunstall, joined the Steps 2 Work programme in November 2012 and one month later he was employed by local engineering firm, Sigmapi Systems where he is now completing an adult Apprenticeship in Warehousing.

The single father of four said:“I cared for my sick wife for many years whilst the children were growing up and then found myself unemployed.

The course helped me brush up on maths and English skills as well as gaining a vocational qualification.

“The people on the course were all in a similar situation to me, we wanted to get back into work but we hadn’t been in a classroom for quite a number of years. The tutor was excellent and made the course enjoyable.”

Sigmapi Systems, based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, produces bespoke automated systems to solve industrial and marine problems and is one of more than 400 businesses across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent who work with the College to provide Apprenticeships and recruitment services.

Higher Education Foundation degree boosts Clair’s career CLAIR Collier aged 40 from Wolstanton joined Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) in September 2010 enrolling on the Foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies.

The mum of two had worked in childcare for several years and prior to this had worked as a dance teacher. Clair told us why she decided to return to education:“I wanted to gain a more recognised qualification and learn more about children’s development and contemporary issues affecting the early years setting, so having seen the Foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies at Newcastle-under-Lyme College I decided this was the course for me.”

In 2010, shortly after starting the university-level course, Clair was diagnosed with breast cancer, consequently receiving aggressive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and undergoing surgery. Clair said: “Many people would have dropped off the course if they were in my situation but I was determined to see the course through. I’m on course to achieve a 2:1 and even possibly a First Class Honours which I never thought possible when I started the course, but the teaching and support I’ve received from Curriculum Leader, Gill Leech and the childhood studies lecturers has been outstanding. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone!”

Clair now works part-time at Oaklands Nursery and Children’s Centre in Wolstanton, where she works with children aged from birth to five years old and their families.

HERE’S much debate as to whether university is still a viable progression option for people. Soaring tuition fees, increased costs of living and higher than ever entry requirements all contribute to people viewing university as out of their grasp.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College believes it has found a viable alternative to the worries and woes of university with its own Higher Education provision. At Newcastle-under-Lyme College you can study for a university-level course locally in a close knit environment at a reduced cost.

Tuition fees for university-level courses at NULC are considerably lower than universities. In 2012/13 the average tuition fee for one year at university in England cost £8,414, compared to £5,550 to study a full-time university-level course at NULC and part-time course fees are even further reduced at £2,750 per year.

Support leads to a first class success ELLEN Anderson, aged 45 from Knutton, is blind and completed the Access to Higher Education (HE) course in 2008 before progressing onto Staffordshire University where she gained a first class honours degree in social work.

Ellen has six children, and had always been educated in establishments for blind people before being recommended to attend the NULC Access to Higher Education taster course by Sure Start. She followed the taster course by enrolling on the full Access to Higher Education (HE) qualification which she successfully completed in a year. Ellen said:“The College opened opportunities and brought me in to a sighted world allowing me to integrate with sighted people.

“Before I came to NULC all I knew was how to be a mum, I had been boxed in by society and didn’t think it was possible as a blind person for dreams and aspirations to become a reality.

“The support I received from staff was exceptional and I thoroughly enjoyed my entire time at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, which in turn spurred me on to continue my studies at Staffordshire University.”

Ellen has overcome barriers to employment and is now working at the YMCA in Stoke-on-Trent for a Government initiative helping young people aged 14-21 who are experiencing a family relationship breakdown and at risk of being made homeless.

Ellen returned to the College where she give an inspirational talk to current students studying Health and Social Care and Early Years who are aspiring towards University.

WO Hairdressing students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) secured a work placement with top hairdresser Trevor Sorbie.

Michelle Croft, aged 26 from Newcastle and Paige Light, aged 21 from Fenton both study Level 3 Hairdressing at the College and have spent one day a week for the past five months working at the world renowned Trevor Sorbie salon in Manchester.

Anthony Keates, Curriculum Manager for Hair and Beauty at the College, said:“This placement has given Paige and Michelle an insight into the hairdressing industry from one of the very best names in the business. Trevor Sorbie has inspired them to be the best they can be and the additional skills they’ve learnt they are already putting in to practice at the College’s own Transform Salon.”

PARENTS looking for ways to keep their children entertained during the summer holidays can sample a free session at Banksy’s Holiday Club.

The Sports Centre, based at the Newcastle-under-Lyme College campus on Knutton Lane, is offering boys and girls aged from eight to 14 the opportunity to take part in a range of activities during the summer holidays.

Activities include team building activities, indoor and outdoor Sports activities, a range of arts and crafts activities, outdoor adventures and music activities.

Sessions run from 9am-4pm on Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer with the club also operating during all half-term breaks. Sessions cost £7 per day.

Banksy kicks off 7-a-side THE Gordon Banks Sports Centre hosts its own 7-a-side football league. Launched by Gordon Banks himself in 2010 the Banksy’s 7 League has matches taking place during the evening on floodlit pitches.The league is affiliated with the FA meaning that all referees are FA qualified.

At the end of each season there is a presentation of trophies for the league winners and runners up.

Each League match costs £30 per team with friendly matches also available at £20 per game.

Food giant sponsors netball academy Sherry skippers national team NULC student Sherry McCue was selected to captain the England Under 19s Ladies Football team.

She took the captain’s armband for the first time against Denmark, where she led the team to a 3-1 win at the new home of the English FA; St Georges Park in Burton, Staffs.

Sherry, aged 18 from Market Drayton, is a member of the College’s award-winning Academy of Sport where she plays for the Academy’s ladies football squad and is in her second year studying the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence.

Sherry is also part of the Academy of Sport’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), which offers benefits including financial support, free use of the facilities at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre and visits to university workshops.

NULC’s mens’ volleyball team have been crowned national champions for the second year running.

its kind. More than 2,000 students and staff from colleges across England, Scotland and Wales competed in fourteen different sports.

The Championships were held at the University of Bath, which gave the young athletes access to some of the finest facilities in Britain as they competed in a total of 39 events over the three days.

College athletes taking part were aged 16 to 19 years and each had qualified to represent one of the Championship's 11 regional teams, with NULC contributing to the West Midlands team.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s men’s volleyball team were crowned National Champions and won gold for the second year in a row. A further three bronze medals for cross country and two silver medals for swimming were also won, and for the first time ever the ladies football squad won gold and were crowned National Champions.

This makes it the most successful Championships ever for the College.

The NULC Netball Academy has joined forces with two local Subway stores through a yearly sponsorship deal, which will see the national food chain supply training and playing kits for the next year.

Trevor Humphreys, Manager of the Academy of Sport, said: “The two local stores based in Newcastle town centre and Milehouse are firm favourites with college students. So for them to come on board and sponsor their local Netball Academy is great news and shows their commitment to local sporting organisations.”

The NULC Academy of Sport has launched its own Facebook Page, complete with photo galleries, news and team results.

The College is at the forefront of digital communications in the education sector with over 4,500 likes on its official Facebook page, and is keen to repeat the success with a dedicated page for the award-winning Academy of Sport.

Helen Taylor-Yates, Digital Communications and PR Officer at NULC, said:“The Academy of Sport is hugely successful on the pitch, frequently featuring at the top of regional and national league tables.

“Sport is a hot topic here at NULC and we wanted to provide a forum where students can share best practice, photographs and join in conversation with like-minded people.

More and more people are turning online when they require information. It’s convenient, quick and visual, which is exactly

what people want nowadays. We invest a lot of time communicating to students and potential students via social media and it’s really paying off with our fan numbers increasing week on week.”
