Courses of Study * Environmental Science & Policy - Major 14 courses total: (1) Four integration courses (ENV 101, ENV 201/202, ENV 311, ENV 312); (2) Three introductory courses in the Natural Sciences from different departments (BIO, GEO, CHM, PHY/EGR), two with labs; (3) Two introductory courses in the Social Sciences/ Humanities from different departments; (4) One course in Statistics; (5) Four electives that create a coherent sequence with a clear environmental focus

ES&P faculty work together using a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach. They are drawn from diverse disciplines, including: Anthropology Biological Sciences Chemistry Economics Engineering Geology Government Philosophy Physics Public Policy Sociology Spanish & Portuguese Study of Women and Gender

Research interests of ES&P faculty include: 

Each student designs her own program of study together with an adviser. Students are encouraged to take classes in a variety of departments and through the Five-College Consortium: e.g.,







Economic and political dimensions of environmental and resource policy development Globalization's local and regional politics of gender in India The role of climate change in the mixed migrations patterns between sub-Saharan Africa and Europe Ecological consequences of marine biological invasions How plants and plant communities respond to environmental changes, such as global warming Effectiveness of marine protected areas

The ES&P Program works to address real-world problems through: student-faculty

research collaborations, educational initiatives, and community engagement.


Smith’s ES&P Program offers its students more than just a curricular experience… 



Lunchbag seminars - regular gatherings to meet others in the Program, enjoy a talk, engage in conversation, or hear about environmental sustainability initiatives on campus and in the community. Lunch provided. Internships - gain experience in a variety of environmental fields as an ES&P sponsored intern with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Duke Marine Lab, or Coral EdVentures Program in Belize, thru ES&P faculty sponsored research or as an ES&P Program or Spatial Analysis Lab (SAL) intern.



Study Away - in one of our affiliate programs: The Arava Institute, The School for Field Studies, Organization for Tropical Studies, School for International Training, Williams-Mystic Maritime Program, or Sea Education Association (SEA).



Mapping - experience a new way of seeing the environment and solving environmental issues in our SAL using Geographic Information Systems.



Lectures - learn from leaders in environmental science and policy and marine science and policy fields throughout the year.



Get active! - with on-campus student environmental orgs like the Green Team, Bike Kitchen or the Smith Community Garden.

The ES&P Program offers a major or minor in Environmental Science and Policy and a minor in Marine Science and Policy
