On a cold, rainy Sunday morning, people started to arrive at junior Emily Anderson’s house for the party. This wasn’t a balloons, confetti, or cake with candles party. This was a party with three trash bags full of used Kleenex. This was a party with a whole table of turkey sandwiches and crackers, untouched. This was a party of endless tears, for at 8:00 that morning, Aug. 27, Anderson got a phone call. Junior Paige Winters had died in a plane crash. On Friday, Aug. 25, Winters, her mom, and her equestrian coach Thomas Fahey flew to Lexington, KY to look at a horse they were considering buying. When it was time for their flight home, they found that there were only two open seats. Winters’ mom sent Winters and Fahey onto the Comair Flight, staying behind to wait for the next available flight to Kansas City. The jet prepared for take-off on the wrong runway. A runway that was 1,500 feet too short. The jet crashed just as it was lifting off. Winters traveled all over the country to look for a horse or to participate in a show. She went to places such as Oklahoma, St. Louis, Arizona and Chicago. “She’s won a silver platter, a bridal, and a saddle pad,” Goodman said. “And she’s had thousands of ribbons, probably more than that even.” She had a love for horses. She and junior Anne Goodman started riding horses in third grade. “When we first started, we rode once or twice a week,” Goodman said. “But as we got older, we started doing it up to five times a week.” Dressed in old t-shirts, jeans, boots and half-chaps, Winters and Goodman spent one to five hours each day with trainer Genny Freeman at Fox Hollow Farm in Bucyrus, KS. With an outdoor and indoor arena, they could ride year-round. Juggling horseback riding, violin and soccer, Goodman had to give something up. She knew that she would never go anywhere with horseback riding in the future. With that in mind, Goodman reluctantly ended her regular visits to the barn. “I wasn’t as passionate as Paige was,” Goodman said. “I loved it, but my family just wasn’t as into it as Paige’s was.” Winters did just the opposite. She gave up everything for the horses. She loved it. Of the many horses that she had acquired over the yearsCoppertop, Friday, Tommy Boy, Deck, Popcorn, Pretzel and more, the most recent addition to the family, Tommy Boy, was her favorite. He was a gray flea-bitten.

“She absolutely loved him,” Goodman said. “She had a connection with him like you would have with a pet. He was a great horse.” Once when she was 13, Winters rode a pony that was new to the barn. They were in the middle of cantering when the pony unexpectedly stopped and laid down with Winters still on its back. Winters laughed until the pony suddenly started to roll over and she had to jump off to avoid being crushed between the ground and the pony’s back. “She always started laughing when she fell off a horse,” Goodman said. “It happened a lot with all of the different horses.” According to her friends, Winters was constantly laughing and smiling. She carried a certain energy with her. If someone wasn’t happy, she went out of her way just to cheer them up. She made sure to make each and every friend feel special. “She made you feel like at that moment, you were all that mattered,” junior Callie Jennings said. “Like you were all that.” Whether it was getting dressed for the first day of school or preparing for a dance, Winters was there for them, picking out the perfect outfit, painting their nails and applying their lip-gloss and mascara. She never forgot a birthday. “On your birthday, she’d always do something really sweet for you,” Jennings said. “She decorated my room probably like five times.” She went to Jennings’ house and adorned her room with “Happy Birthday” posters and colorful streamers. She showed up early in the morning at Anderson’s house to deliver Anderson her favorite strawberry donuts. She made a happy-birthday phone call to junior Danielle Lipsman after a whole day of no other birthday wishes from her friends. To her many friends, Winters was like a mom. She always took care of them and made it a point to remember everything about them. She made them wash their hands before using her cell phone. If there was ever a time when she had friends over and they had nothing to do, she cooked for them. Break-and-bakes, cupcakes, quesadillas and broccoli. That Sunday morning will be everlasting in the memory of each friend. Each phone call will be remembered with the shed of a tear. That day was dedicated to the remembrance of Winters’ life- the bad, yes, but the good most of all. For the 60 friends that arrived at Anderson’s house that Sunday, remembering Winters and her life brought a smile and a laugh to each tear-streaked face. “She had such a good outlook, she was always happy,” Anderson said. “The party was a celebration of her life.”
