Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends of St. Mary’s College, It has been a tremendous year for the College’s Advancement Office and Foundation, and I am pleased to share the highlights of 2011-12 with our dedicated supporters. You are all vital partners in our effort to make residential liberal arts education possible for our talented students, and in our work to sustain and strengthen our academic programs and support our exceptional faculty.

The Advancement Office is on the move, creating and enhancing opportunities to engage individuals in the life of St. Mary’s. We have invited alumni to share their talents and expertise with students in and out of classrooms. For example, Rebecca Wright Dodson ’87 and Mark Wensell ’90 have given their time, talent and knowledge to help launch the College’s first entrepreneurship competition: teams of students will create business plans to be presented and professionally critiqued by alumni and community entrepreneurs. We have partnered with the Athletic Department to form the Seahawk Alliance: a booster organization, chaired by Brianne Smithson Weaver ’00 and Drew Weaver ’98, and made up of members spanning our broader community who will help develop and organize fundraising and outreach initiatives to benefit varsity athletic teams. Throughout the year, we invite to campus our neighbors and community to enjoy lectures, performances and sporting events – and to share in our educational and cultural offerings through the Center for the Study of Democracy and the Arts Alliance. In collaboration with the Alumni Council and the offices of Academic Affairs and Admissions, we are reaching out to people in their own regions – the cities of Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia and Richmond – and hosting nationwide receptions to discover the potential of initiating alumni chapters and to share the St. Mary’s story. The Foundation is also working diligently to build upon St. Mary’s mission and to ensure that the College is the highest quality and value for students. Virtually every facet of academic life is enhanced by the support that the Foundation provides: the core curriculum, scholarships and awards, the library, internships and study abroad, faculty and undergraduate research, and athletics. Dedicated to the financial health of the College through sound fiscal management of assets, the Foundation will propel the College to new heights, and by growing the endowment, will provide strong potential for St. Mary’s in perpetuity. At the close of fiscal year 2012, the Foundation’s endowment had a value of $24,517,397 – a significant increase from fiscal year 2011, thanks to two generous gifts of over $1 million each and continued efforts to strengthen our investment returns. I am excited for our growth and accomplishments this year, and with this annual report, we celebrate all of you who have made St. Mary’s a philanthropic priority. Quite simply, we could not offer such a distinctive education without your dedication and commitment. Thank you for uniting around St. Mary’s and our promise of a public education and high standards of academic excellence.

A St. Mary’s liberal arts education, which embodies inclusiveness and diversity, is a portal to a rapidly changing and interconnected world. As the future depends on creative thinkers and expert communicators and researchers, St. Mary’s – with access and excellence at the core of its mission – offers a rigorous academic enterprise and empowers students with opportunities regardless of their ability to pay for the cost of college. For the public honors college to recruit and retain highly talented students, the College requires assistance through philanthropic support to help provide financial support to deserving, promising students. Need-based scholarships enable students to explore and embrace their full potential despite limited personal financial resources. Creating and growing scholarship funds is, therefore, one of the College’s highest priorities. Fiscal year 2012 was marked by tremendous support for such scholarships, both endowed and current scholarship funds designated to meet the needs of today’s students. This annual report highlights some of these funds. We hope these stories inspire others to consider what they might do to help us provide the support our students need to experience St. Mary’s College.

Cindy Broyles Endowed Scholarship Fund Scholarships help the institution in both the recruitment and retention of intellectually talented students. Established by Trustee Cindy Broyles, Class of 1979, the Cindy Broyles Endowed Scholarship Fund will benefit St. Mary’s College students who demonstrate financial need. “Providing need-based scholarship is urgent and a top priority for the College. The 1840 Society In 1840, the Maryland legislature authorized a state-wide lottery to finance the construction of a public, non-denominational boarding seminary in St. Mary’s City. In 1992, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a residential liberal arts institution, was named the state’s public honors college. While our status as a public trust and our promise of public education – affordable to all and thriving on diversity and high standards of academic excellence – stem from distinctive legislative origins, it is philanthropy that sustains our commitment to a legacy of affordability and educational rigor. The 1840 Society recognizes leaders whose annual financial support not only transforms opportunities for students and faculty, but also plays a significant part in St. Mary’s growth, success, and unique place in higher education. Within the 1840 Society, there are five levels of giving. Monument Circle $25,000+ As Maryland’s “living monument” to the historical significance of the colonial capital – St. Mary’s City – the school exemplifies an ethos of toleration. The “Freedom of Conscience” statue not only symbolizes St. Mary’s founding and guiding principles, but also the luminaries who support the school’s mission. Donors at this level have created, for example, four-year scholarships, lighting the way for students with financial need – the institution’s highest funding priority. Horseshoe Bend Circle $10,000-$24,999 The St. Mary’s River has been integral to campus since the days when students traveled by steamboat. As the campus physically envelops the river, the water enriches the lives of all who study and teach here. Donors at this level have enhanced the distinctive living and learning environment that makes St. Mary’s unique.

Pine Tree Hill Circle $5,000-$9,999 The vista from above St. John’s Pond provides vantage points to the past – the first archaeological dig on the college campus was carried out here in 1967 – and to the horizon. Donors at this level have ensured new opportunities, including the resources for students to carry out St. Mary’s Projects. The outcomes of these research projects or creative expressions in the arts transcend the college’s boundaries and have implications in their respective fields. Willow Oak Circle $2,500-$4,999 The magnificent tree growing in the Garden of Remembrance symbolizes nurture and knowledge. Donors at this level have provided, for instance, assistance grants and hope to students who are financially struggling to complete their St. Mary’s degrees. Bell Tower Circle $1,000-$2,499 Dedicated in 1980, the memorial carillon stands as a tribute to St. Mary’s devoted leaders and supporters. Donors at this level have strengthened programs, including academic, student life, and athletic programs, that are essential to a residential campus. Joseph and Kathleen Garner Endowed Scholarship Fund Scholarships help enable learning that is a mix of traditional study and unique experiences for students. Established by Joe ’74 and Kathy Garner, the Joseph and Kathleen Garner Endowed Scholarship Fund recognizes that financial need not only stands in the way of access to education, but also to co-curricular dimensions such as international study and internships. “The Garners clearly understand that the best education takes place both in and out of the classroom, and they generously removed the impediments that keep students from exploring all their options. By removing worries about student debt and the extra expenses incurred by pursuing internships and studying abroad, they are giving a lucky recipient life-changing opportunities. The College has already launched a recruitment plan to promote this wonderful award to students and families at St. Mary’s Ryken High School, which we expect will generate a bumper crop of outstanding candidates. Ike Weiner and Eleanor Weiner Perlman Endowed Scholarship Fund Trustee Emerita June Auerbach, Class of 1949, served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1995 to 2007. Always a leader, June is deeply committed to St. Mary’s and its future. Baltimore City Scholarships In August 2011, St. Mary’s College was awarded a 4:1 challenge grant by the France-Merrick Foundation; successful completion of the challenge grant will increase endowed funds for Baltimore City Scholarships by $500,000. “Scholarships for Baltimore City students provide not just financial assistance, but also encouragement.” – Sociology Major, Class of 2012 “With a Baltimore City Scholarship, college became a reality.” – Theater, Film and Media Studies Major, Class of 2012 The France-Merrick Challenge is a call to action, a call to transform the lives of academically proficient students who are unable to pay the full cost of tuition. Welsh Endowed Music Scholarship Fund The Russell family legacy of service and dedication to St. Mary’s began with May Russell, president of St. Mary’s Seminary Junior College from 1948 to 1969. Katharine A. Russell, niece of May Russell, has served on the College’s Board of Trustees since 2007. Together, Katharine and her mother, Jane Welsh Russell (above), have named the quadrangle between Kent and Calvert halls, the May Russell Alumni Lodge, and the Dr. Charles W. and Eliza R. new Scholarships designated for current use provide funding for students immediately The Paul Blanchette Chemistry Award Current Fund was created to honor Dr. Paul P. Blanchette, associate professor of chemistry, for his unique ability to connect with students and inspire a love of chemistry and for his 37 years of teaching, mentoring students on their research projects, and advising students on their course selections and career plans. The scholarship awards will benefit rising senior chemistry majors who demonstrate financial need. Established by Eleanor Quirk Abbey ’34, an avid local historian, the Eleanor Quirk Abbey Current Fund will provide annual $1,000 scholarship awards to undergraduates who demonstrate financial need and who are engaged in history, anthropology, archaeology, or museum studies. Scholarship funds awarded in 2011–12

During the 2011-12 academic year, $33,245 was awarded from the Emergency Assistance Scholarship Fund to assist 14 students – the average amount awarded was just $2,375, but the difference it made to the students was significant. Also in fiscal year 2012, $35,835 was awarded to 10 students from the General Scholarship Fund and $7,500 was awarded to 5 students from the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund. “With a grant from the Emergency Assistance Scholarship Fund, I am able to pursue my goals and dreams – to teach second grade in elementary school. The professors at St. Mary’s are inspirational and supportive. Scholarship recipient Perspective As I began my first year, I immediately knew that I wanted to start fresh. In high school, I was not an extremely involved student; it was time to find my niche. I went to the club fair and chose several activities to commit to throughout my college career. I am now on the executive board of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national honors leadership society; the captain of the Hawkettes, our dance team; and a devoted member of the dance club.

Cassey Elder ’13 My parents met on the first day of their freshman year at St. Mary’s College, in Caroline Hall, in late August of 1973. Since I was a young girl, I knew that St. Mary’s was the place for me. When I began crafting my application to the school on the water, I knew that money would become an often-discussed item in my house. My parents informed me that unless we received significant financial help from various scholarships and loans, attending St. Mary’s might not become a reality for me.

I firmly believe that if it was not for the scholarship that I received, I would not have thrived like I have. St. Mary’s has given me the opportunity to grow into a mature adult with confidence that I will continue into the workforce with the skills that I need. I went from an awkward high school senior with goals and dreams to someone with the knowledge to achieve them. I will be an asset to whomever I work for come graduation. It is relatively simple: St. Mary’s turned me into the woman I had always wanted to become and gave me the confidence to know that I will thrive in my life. After that terrifying and yet thrilling graduation date in the spring of 2013, I will have a bachelor of arts degree in psychology with specialization in educational studies. I have learned from my St. Mary’s journey, which included an internship, that I would like to work in public relations, focusing on communications and organizational management. Because of my positive experience, I am confident in my goals and aspirations.

Fortunately, I was granted the Alumni Legacy Scholarship at St. Mary’s. I was honored to be selected, and receiving the scholarship award also boosted my confidence as a student to attend such an academically rigorous school. For my parents, it gave them the opportunity to send their child to the school of her dreams.

Without scholarship support, I would not have had the opportunity to attend such a beautiful and nurturing place for these four crucial years. St. Mary’s became my home in the fall of 2009. Although I will be graduating in a few short months, I know that St. Mary’s will always be a place that I can call home. I will always remember the years I spent at St. Mary’s.
