As we look back and relish the many accomplishments of our teams and individual studentathletes during the 2012-13 academic year, we know that it’s a wonderful time to be a Billiken. Recalling last year’s highlights in our strategic objectives of educating, competing and building community is certain to stir pride in our hearts. It also will inspire us to continue our pursuit of excellence with diligence and determination as we prepare for 2013-14.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

We’re also very proud of swimmer Stephen Hansen, who won the 100-yard breaststroke at the conference meet, and track and field athletes Margo Richardson and Hannah Kuenzel, who were league champs in the indoor mile and shot put, respectively. We expect our student-athletes to excel in the classroom, and once again they met that expectation. Seventeen Billikens were selected to their sport’s A-10 All-Academic team; 202 (96 in the fall, 106 in the spring) were named to the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for attaining a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher; and 41 earned straight A’s during the spring 2012 semester and/or the fall 2012 semester.

A school-record six SLU programs earned NCAA public recognition for achieving Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that ranked in the top 10 The success our program enjoys percent of their respective sports. The basketball team brought home both A-10 trophies for the first time as coach Jim Crews guided the Billikens to their first outright conference crown in 56 years as well as the A-10 Championship title. Two more program milestones occurred in the NCAA Tournament second round – a school-record 28th victory and a tourney win in consecutive seasons for the first time.

TENNIS

Coach Mike McGinty’s soccer team won the A-10 Championship to earn a record 47th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Billikens were the No. 8 national seed, their highest ever.

For a second straight season, the baseball team won a school-record 41 games and tied for the A-10 title, giving the program back-to-back championships for the first time since 1967. Coach Darin Hendrickson’s Billikens also captured the A-10 Championship to earn the program’s third NCAA Tournament bid since 2006.

Growing and sustaining a top-level athletics program requires a constant look to the future and an ability to meet daily challenges. Be assured that our staff and I have this responsibility foremost in our thoughts as we anticipate another exciting year in 2013-14. Please accept our gratitude for the important role in our success played by you, the Billiken family, as you reconnect with wonderful memories in the pages that follow. Sincerely,

“Building Community” is one of the strategic objectives of the Department

of Athletics. Billiken student-athletes are committed to the Jesuit tradition of community service and take to heart the importance of enhancing the lives of others. They are generous with their time and take great pride in volunteering for worthy endeavors such as assisting those who are less fortunate, serving as positive role models for children and raising money for important causes. In 2012-13, Billiken staff and student-athletes carried on the SLU tradition of serving the community, performing countless hours of service and assisting a myriad of charitable organizations. The Department of Athletics also takes pride in being visible in the community and drawing people to campus. In 2012-13, more than 175,000 Billiken fans took in sporting events at SLU. MEGAN BOKEN 1989-2012

Former Saint Louis University volleyball student-athlete Megan Boken passed away Aug. 18, 2012, in St. Louis. She was 23. Boken played for the Billikens from 2007-10 and concluded her career ranked fourth in matches played (127), fifth in digs (1,212), 13th in points (1,143.5) and 14th in service aces (102) on SLU’s all-time lists. She was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team and the A-10 Championship All-Tournament team as a junior in 2009, and she was All-Conference honorable mention in her senior season. Boken played on Billiken teams that won two A-10 regular-season titles (2008, 2009), captured the 2008 A-10 Championship crown and made two NCAA Championship appearances (2008, 2009). Boken was a 2011 graduate of SLU’s John Cook School of Business, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing. RICK MAJERUS 1948-2012 Former Saint Louis University head men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus passed away Dec. 1, 2012, in California. Majerus coached the Billikens from 2007-12. In 25 years as a collegiate head coach, he posted an overall record of 517-216. In his five seasons at SLU, the Billikens went 95-69. During his five years as SLU’s head coach, Majerus put the men’s basketball program back on the map. In 2011-12, he guided the Billikens to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, SLU’s first NCAA appearance since 2000. In addition, the Billikens topped Memphis in the second round for their first NCAA Tournament win since 1998. Saint Louis entered the national polls for the first time since the 1994-95 season. Majerus took 12 teams to the NCAA Tournament and four to the NIT during his illustrious career. His 1998 University of Utah team advanced to the NCAA championship final. Majerus reached the 20-win plateau 15 times, including two seasons with 30 wins. During his time at SLU, Majerus had eight players earn Academic AllConference honors, the most by any Atlantic 10 Conference program during that span. He coached six Academic All-Americans in his career, including two with the Billikens.

Saint Louis University deeply appreciates your financial support and volunteer hours, all of which enhance our athletics program. Your support greatly benefits the women and men student-athletes who participate in the University’s 18 intercollegiate programs. However, your assistance is needed in another area. Saint Louis must carefully control and monitor the involvement of persons inside and outside the University in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes as well as their involvement with current student-athletes. According to NCAA rules and regulations, an “athletics representative” (aka “booster”) is: A) A Saint Louis University athletics booster club member or season ticket holder. B) A person who assists or has been requested to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes by Saint Louis University’s executive/athletics administration. C) A person who assists or has been requested to assist with present student-athletes by Saint Louis University’s executive/athletics administration. Once an individual is identified as an “athletics representative,” the person retains that identity indefinitely. The NCAA has rules and regulations governing the behavior of such representatives with regard to prospective/current studentathletes. Any violation of those rules and regulations by an “athletics representative” could result in sanctions for the Saint Louis University department of intercollegiate athletics and/or its student-athletes. In an effort to ensure that the institution you support is in compliance with NCAA regulations, included here are some helpful “DO NOTs.” CONTACTS WITH CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENT-ATHLETES DO NOT provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends any benefit or special arrangement (e.g., use of an automobile, employment arrangement for relatives, cash, gifts of clothing). The NCAA considers these “extra benefits,” and they are specifically prohibited. DO NOT provide payment of expenses (e.g., room, board, transportation) for friends or relatives to visit student-athletes where they are enrolled. DO NOT expend funds to entertain student-athletes or their friends or relatives, except for infrequent occasional home meals provided to enrolled student-athletes as specified by the NCAA. DO NOT use the name or picture of an enrolled student-athlete to directly advertise, recommend or promote sales or the use of a commercial product or service of any kind. Even the SALE of a picture of an enrolled studentathlete would jeopardize the student’s eligibility.
