With five returning position starters and its entire pitching staff returning, the Southeastern Louisiana softball team heads into the 2010 season with a positive outlook and expectations of returning to the Southland Conference Tournament after a one-year absence.
The Lady Lions finished 20-33 overall in 2009, but Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois and his staff are hopeful the right pieces are in place to make marked improvements in the coming season.
“We feel pretty good about where we are heading into the season,” Langlois commented. “We’ve got some questions we need to answer, but we will have to see who steps up during the non-conference season. We’re going to give everyone an opportunity to show what they have early on and the ones who produce are who we’re going to battle with in Southland Conference play.”

Gomez provided a good compliment for Duhe and was Southeastern’s most productive power hitter in her first season out of Alvin High School. An honorable mention All-Southland Conference outfielder, Gomez led the Lady Lions with eight home runs, 24 runs batted in and 23 runs scored a season ago. “We’re in good shape at that No. 3 and 4 spots in our lineup,” Langlois said. “We have a lot of confidence that Katie and Meghan can contribute at a high level and we expect both of their numbers to improve this season.”
Offensively, Southeastern will be looking to replace the school’s career hits leader and the program’s all-time leader in walks in 2009 seniors Heather Sherrill and Allyson McCubbins. However, the cupboard is far from bare for the Lady Lions, who return several proven performers – a group led by junior Katie Duhe and sophomore Meghan Gomez. A two-year starter at shortstop, Duhe was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District and Academic AllSouthland selection a season ago. The Lutcher native was among the Southland

At the top of the lineup, sophomore Jordan Logan will likely hold down the leadoff spot for the Lady Lions after a productive freshman campaign. The Garden Grove, Calif. native was second on the team with 44 hits and finished the season with a .264 batting average and 18 runs scored. Logan and freshman Michelle Duhe are expected to give the Lady Lions a pair of speedy performers at the top of the lineup.
“Jordan did some nice things for us as a freshman and we expect her to be even better as a sophomore,” Langlois commented. “With her and Michelle, we have two players that can flat out fly.”
In the circle, senior Catherine Gunther and sophomore Katelyn Thomason are the top returning pitchers. Gunther (9-15, 3.78 ERA) was the staff ace in her first season with the Lady Lions, while Thomason (7-11, 3.81 ERA) also had some brilliant moments in her debut campaign. Senior Jenna Yoder (3-5, 6.05 ERA) and junior Bailey Zievert (1-2, 5.97 ERA) also return in 2010.
Meghan Gomez Several other Lady Lions will be looked upon to infuse power into the Lady Lion attack. Senior Chelsea Takacs (four home runs, 16 RBI in 2009), sophomore Lauren Coniglio (2 HR, 9 RBI), along with a pair of 2010 newcomers – freshman Kelsey Nichols and sophomore Casey Simpson – will all see time in the middle of the lineup.
“We definitely have some options in the middle of the lineup,” Langlois commented. “We’re going to play whoever has the hot hand and we’re counting on each of those players to produce. We like the options we have and we know that if someone’s having a tough stretch, we have someone who can step in for them that can be a power threat.”

Jenna and Bailey are our most experienced pitchers and we expect both of them to give us valuable innings.”

The Southeastern pitching staff will see several newcomers make an impact. Chief among those is Ponchatoula native Kati Morse, a four-time All-District performer at PHS. Simpson and sophomore Vicki Honeycutt will also see some action in the circle. The Lady Lions will also benefit from the return of freshman Elise Kittrell, who missed the 2009 campaign after arm surgery.
“Kati gives us a power pitcher, something we haven’t had in the last couple of years,” Langlois stated. “We expected Elise to help us a lot last year before she got hurt and as a lefty, we think she can cause some problems for the opposition. Vicki comes in with some experience at Centenary last season and we really like how she handles herself on the field. Casey will primarily play at third, but she’s got some junior college pitching experience and we’ll give her some looks in the circle.
Southeastern should have a strong defense behind whoever is in the circle. Katie Duhe and senior Amber Freeman are tabbed to handle the middle infield duties, while junior Tamra Ladnier returns for the third straight season at first base. Langlois expects Simpson and Coniglio to vie for time at third. Gomez is likely to return to her natural position of catcher this season after spending 2009 in the outfielder. Coniglio and junior Heather Grivas could also see time behind the plate. “We’ve had good infield defense the past couple of years and we believe that will continue in 2010,” Langlois said. “We especially have a lot of faith in Amber and Tamra defensively. Amber is smooth and can play either second or shortstop. Tamra is the best defensive first baseman we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
“We’re really excited about our pitching depth heading into the season,” Langlois continued. “We expect Cat, Katelyn and Kati to be our primary starters, but we have the luxury this season that if one of our starters has an off day, we can throw as many as eight different pitchers out there that we feel confident can get us outs.”

In the outfield, Logan should likely man center, with Nichols and Takacs having the inside track on the corner spots. With their speed, either Duhe could also see action in the outfield. The Lady Lions seem to have everything in place to compete in the always competitive Southland Conference. “We’re going to have a battle on our hands each weekend of the Southland Conference season,” Langlois commented. “This is a good softball league and we’ve got to be ready when the league season rolls around. We’ve got some talent on this team, but the key for us is to put the players who are going to help us win in the right spots at the right times.”

16th Year at Southeastern School Career Record: 322-424 Southeastern Louisiana, 1992
After 15 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2008 squad returned to the Southland Conference Tournament after a five-year absence.
Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led seven teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve.
The upgrading of Southeastern's home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick wall along the foul lines, a new backstop and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason prior to 2010, turf was layed in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New outdoor batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’s home field is considered to be one of the top facilities in the SLC and the immediate area.
Over the past nine seasons, Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy of individual accolades including 35 all-SLC selections (six first team) and 16 allLouisiana picks. In 2004, Summer Delaneuville was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith - the school's career leader in home runs - was named first-team all-SLC and allLouisiana. As a senior, Smith was once again named all-SLC. The three first-team SLC picks in 2002 were the first-ever in the Southland for Southeastern. In 2009, Heather Sherrill was named to the All-Southland Conference team for the third time and became the school’s leader in hits, RBI, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases. Katie Duhe was named to the Academic AllDistrict VI team, marking the third straight year one of Langlois’ players made the squad.

In 2008, Sherrill was a first team All-Southland Conference and AllLouisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who became the school’s career strikeout leader as a senior, made her third appearance on the All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhart was named to the Academic AllAmerica team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team. Langlois also earned his 300th career win during the 2008 campaign. In 2007, Ray was a first team AllSLC choice and Arica Rodriguez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The Lady Lions hit a then-school-record 39 home runs and tied the school-record with 31 victories, including a 1-0 win over No. 6 LSU that snapped the Lady Tigers' 55-game winning streak versus in-state schools. Ray set school records with 21 victories and eight shutouts. The 2001 season provided perhaps the finest season ever for Southeastern softball as Langlois' Lions broke or tied 14 school and individual single-season and single-game records and placed five on the Southland Conference post season teams en route to the first winning season since 1998. Most noticeably, the squad tied the all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as the Lady Lions knocked off the second and thirdseeded teams finishing with a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors.
The 2002 season wasn’t quite as good as 2001, but the finish was almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fifth place league finish. The Lions didn't win quite as many games or set as many records as the '01 squad, but the 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off topseeded and tournament host Northwestern State in the semifinals to finish third in the event for the second straight year.

In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Conference and set the school's all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament while also setting numerous standards in the record books.
And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor was no stranger upon taking over the program in 1995. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions. Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeastern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under thenhead coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions. Langlois picked up the duties as interim head coach, finishing the season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995 and has taken over the softball program full force.
Langlois has compiled an overall coaching record of 322-424 but has recorded 20+ wins in 10 of his last 11 campaigns. In his time as Southeastern's skipper, he has guided two All-South Region players, 19 All-Louisiana team members, 42 all-Conference players, 12 conference all-Academic team members and two CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees. Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge.
Langlois received a bachelor of arts degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (10) and Macie (6). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008.

Assistant Coach Karin Smith Gadberry Fifth Year at Southeastern Southeastern Louisiana, 2005
She owns the top two seasons by a Southeastern home run hitter, blasting a school-record 15 home runs in 2004 and 14 round-trippers in 2005. Smith also holds school records for single-season slugging percentage (.757, 2004), singleseason walks (28, 2005) and longest hitting streak (14 games, 2004). She is also one of eight players in school history to hit two home runs in a game. Karin Smith Gadberry, a native of Puyallup, Wash. and a former star of the Southeastern softball team, is in her fifth season as an assistant on head coach Pete Langlois’ staff.
Smith primarily works with the team’s hitters, passing along the expertise that made her one of the top power hitters in the Southland Conference during her Southeastern career, which spanned from 2002-05. Smith is also largely involved in the Lady Lions’ recruiting efforts and helps Langlois run numerous camps during the offseason.
Smith’s collegiate career followed at stellar high school career at Sumner High School. At Sumner High, she was a three-sport athlete and was a two-time First Team SPSL catcher.
Smith is a 2005 graduate of Southeastern. She and her husband, Alex, reside in Hammond.

Smith is also in charge of the team’s strength and conditioning program. Smith’s work with the Lady Lions both on the field and the weight room was a major factor in Southeastern hitting a thenschool record 39 home runs in 2007, topping that with 43 home runs in 2008.
Smith entered the coaching ranks after a stellar career in the green and gold. A two-time All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana catcher, Smith finished her career as the school’s career leader with 37 home runs, 109 runs batted in and 66 extra base hits.

appeared in and recorded 87 hits, 27 doubles, three home runs and 59 runs batted in.
As a junior, she hit .297 with 13 doubles, 47 hits, seven home runs and 39 RBI on the way to second team All-Southland and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors. In her senior season, she was a third team All-Southland pick and helped the Lady Lions reach the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time since 2002.

Rodriguez, a Natalia, Texas, enters the coaching ranks after a two-year Lady Lion career that saw her earn AllSouthland Conference honors in both 2007 and 2008. During her time with Lady Lions, she started all 109 games she

HALL OF FAME/NOTABLE PERFORMERS
Voncia Bookman - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2005
A standout outfielder from 1992-93, Bookman earned second-team all-south region honors both seasons for her play in the field and at the plate. She was two-time first-team All-Louisiana and All-Trans America Athletics Conference and was named co-Louisiana Newcomer of the Year in 1992. A prolific hitter, Bookman holds school records for season and career batting average (.460/.453), season and career triples (8/14), career slugging percentage (.697), as well as single game stolen bases (4) and single season bases on balls (27). She ranks second in single season slugging percentage at .742. Bookman was the second softball player to be inducted joining Tara Maus who was a 2003 selection.
Tara Maus - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2003
Tara Maus was a four-year letter winner for the Lady Lions and one of the most decorated players in Southeastern softball history. In 1991, she became the first female athlete in school history to be named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team, an accomplishment she repeated in 1992. In her junior season, she was a first team All-Trans America Athletic Conference selection after batting .309 with eight doubles and a .396 slugging percentage. In her senior season, she earned Academic-All American notice from the National Softball Coaches Association (NSCA). Maus also garnered second team All-TAAC and Honorable Mention All-Louisiana honors after batting .300 with eight doubles and 25 RBI. Maus holds the school's career record for sacrifice flies and finished her career with the record for most consecutive games played at that time.

Highly qualified students entering Southeastern – those with ACT scores of 24 and above – have increased nearly 50 percent in the past five years. • In a report issued by the Southern Regional Education Board, Southeastern’s master’s degree program in education was
rated among the best in the southern states in preparing future school principals and other education leaders. • The School of Nursing has been named the Nursing Program of the Year three times in the last seven years by the Louisiana State Nurses Foundation. • Southeastern in 2008 was named a “Great College to Work for” by The Chronicle of High Education. The only Louisiana institution to be recognized in the survey, Southeastern received high marks in 10 different areas, including collaborative governance, job satisfaction and confidence in leadership. • In order to encourage students to complete their undergraduate degree in four years, Southeastern offers a unique “Progression Scholarship” to students who demonstrate satisfactory progress toward graduation. • Southeastern’s redesigned mathematics courses have increased success in courses often considered “barriers” to student success. In two years, the college algebra success rate has improved by 27 percent and the withdrawal rate is steadily falling.

• Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation where students rent, not buy, textbooks. At Southeastern, students pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semester, and simply return books at the end, resulting in a significant savings.
Workforce Development • Nearly 57,000 degrees over the last 50 years with 20,053 graduates between 1998 and 2007. Southeastern’s top graduate producing programs include education, health and related clinical sciences, engineering technicians, business administration and social services. • A number of new undergraduate degrees have been specifically designed to meet area workforce demands. These include Supply Chain Management, Engineering Technology with mechanical, construction, computer science, and industrial technology concentrations, and additional clinical training in radiology technology.
• Since opening in 2003, the Southeast Louisiana Business Center has facilitated 125 new business starts, more than $120 million in capital raised for businesses; 13 incubator “graduates” creating nearly 50 jobs and more than $15 million in new
capital; and the completion of nearly 40 business and industry economic impact studies. • A survey of employers who have hired Southeastern graduates indicates that more than 75 percent found Southeastern graduates were better prepared for employment when compared to other employees; all said they would readily hire another Southeastern graduate.

The Southeastern Channel is the educational cable television channel for Southeastern. Onthe-air 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Southeastern Channel broadcasts over Charter Cable, reaching into 92,000 homes with a potential audience of over 240,000 viewers throughout the North Shore area.

The University has undergone a $140 million construction program that has transformed the campus, including new residential facilities, classroom and lab buildings. Located in the center of campus, Sims Memorial Library contains a col-
lection of more than 390,000 volumes and is a partial depository for over 232,000 federal and state government publications. It is also the home to the Center For Southeast Louisiana Studies, which promotes the history and the cultures of Louisiana's Florida Parishes and surrounding areas. r. John L. Crain serves as Southeastern Louisiana University’s fourteenth President. After having served in an interim capacity since last July the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors appointed him to the university’s highest post in February. Crain previously served as Provost, the university’s highest academic post, for seven years. His 22 years of experience on the Hammond campus includes head of the Department of Accounting, chair of the Council of Department Heads, president of the Faculty Senate,

“I liked what I saw at Southeastern from the start but when my wife Jacki and I met the people, we knew we had found a home,” Bellairs said. “My whole life I have spent time in college towns; growing up, as a coach, and as an administrator, and I have been blessed by living in some great places. When I started preparing for the interview I was very impressed with the campus and the attention Southeastern paid to supporting the students; but when I met the people -- the faculty, coaches, and members of the community – I wanted to be a part of it.”

Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. There he created new

At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 21 regular-season or tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, two in men’s basketball and two in men’s golf. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s AllSports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships.
Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from regis-

Bellairs also served as assistant basketball coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., from 1988 to 1993, where his teams saw one NCAA tournament appearance and five NIT appearances; as assistant basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts (1986-1988); assistant basketball coach at the University of Maryland (1984-1986); and head basketball coach, head cross country coach and assistant baseball coach at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. (19831985).
He holds a master of science degree in physical education and athletics administration from Western Illinois University and a bachelor of arts degree in sociology/social work from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. Bellairs and his wife Jacki have five children.

he Lion Athletics Association is a not-for-profit organization which exists to assist in funding scholarships, operations and facilities for the Southeastern Louisiana University Lion Athletic Department. Lion athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level and in the highly competitive Southland Conference. At the core of the the mission of the department is the expectation to positively impact the lives of hundreds of student-athletes. These student-athletes positively represent the Lion Family with integrity and dignity as they prepare to be the leaders of tomorrow. Lion Athletics is committed to the development of the student-athlete in the following areas: • Academic Excellence • Competitive Excellence • Superior Citizenship Contributions to the Lion Athletics Association are overseen by a board of directors and directly impact the student-athletes and the sport programs.
