Autumn has arrived, we’re getting close to the start of the winter season and we’re all already dreaming about fresh powder and virgin spaces…Back from the show, here we are even more boosted by the cool snowboarding and snowskating images we’ve seen.

A good old September Tuesday night in Grenoble, France. First stop of the Absinthe Film Tour, it is also thehometown of team rider Sylvain Bourbousson. For their 10th release, Absinthe, once again, offered the finest cocktail of backcountry shredding and spectacular urban actions. Shot in 16mm and HD format, the 21 featuring snowboaders share, troughout the movie, an amazing trip around the world. On our side, we focused our attention on one special part : powder surfing performed by the pioneer of the discipline himself : Wolfgang Nyvelt. We were expecting to be stoked and it could not have been better. Wolle is reinventing powder shredding with
his Äsmo decks. One thing is clear, Wolle is proving that the limits of powsurfing have not yet been reached, a lot remains to be explored.Thanks to riders like him, we all have even more motivation to continuously push the limits. We are looking forward to see more footages of W o l l e ’ s powsurfing next season In the meantime, we invite you to meet us a few pages later for Wolle’s interview. Powsurfing by Wolle Nyvelt
Awesome !!! That’s probably one of the words that everybody pronounced the first time they watched a powsurfing video. Can you imagine surfing the mountains, what an experience !!! Riding this bindingless swallow seems to be great fun. Rad turns, laybacks, jumping off the cliffs, rotations and flip tricks…All these tricks take an another dimension with this man. The man is Wolle Nyvelt. A professional snowboarder who is one of the best but we could also say, the pioneer of powsurfing. With his friend Steve Grubber Green, they decided to create Äsmo to share their passion. Because they represent something that we really appreciated at Slope, we decided to find out more. So, it is a real pleasure to present the Äsmo project with Wolle’s words. Wolle, what is Asmo ? Äsmo is the work of Steve Gruber Green and myself. I have known Steve since ever and he is the one who actually got me on a skateboard in the first place. His dad built the first skateramp in Mayrhofen, our hometown in Austria. He was also the initiator of a couple of other projects in this town. Did somebody introduce you to powsurfing ? When did you start ? I started riding bindingless boards with snowskates and then Salomon launched their first powderskate which was Slope / the snowskate magazine
great.Riton,Salomon’s shaper, and myself, worked on a few pairs of new skis. I then started to make molds in my garage for wider decks for the powskate. I looked at old snowboard shapes for a long time but I really found some inspirationnal shapes in barefoots and wintersticks in particular. One day, I talked to Steve and bought some ideas of a way we could make powder surfs. Steve comes out of a technical school and so do I, so we joined forces and started to build a workshop in my garage. That was in December 2007. Now we’ve got a sweet new setup and the boards are way more tricked out than the first ones. .
What do you enjoy in powsurfing ? So far we did three little art things. What does powsurfing mean for you ? One was at Ispo, the other one was by inviting an artist here, in Exactly what the name says. We love Mayrhofen. We just hanged out surfing as much as skating. Its our roots drinking beers together and so yeah, partly, we started äsmo to painted some boards. We can notice that some air tricks are coming, are there any tricks that you are working on or want to work on ? I was filmed with a few new tricks this year for Absinthe, we will see if people are stoked on them... What do your team-mates think about powsurfing (professional snowboard team-mates)? So far, everybody was pretty stoked on the boards for sure. We gave a powsurf to Terje this year and he ripped on it... It’s not the first time that in your video parts we can see powsurf, is it the producers who ask for that or is it your personal request ? Well, Absinthe films are pretty open on whatever exists in snowboarding. I really didn’t devote much time to shooting and filming, I was injured for a long time last year and only filmed 3 days with the powsurf. This year, it was a bit more but snowboarding is still the priority!

JAPAN Throughout this article, we really want to show that snowskating could be a good excuse to travel and explore the world.Mike Steinhauser,owner of 0910 snowskates, decided to fly to Japan .Here is the story of an unforgettable trip.
I wanted to document the progression of European snowskating since a very long time. Very few people know about snowskating and to say the sad truth, the average joe knows almost nothing about what it reallys mean to skate on snow. The idea to make a film came around after thousands of questions that people asked us like “hey dude, what’s that? Is it hard?” This kind of question has been heard thousands of times by any snowskaters’ ears while riding down the slopes. And even if my video documentary will most probably never be seen by most of skiers or snowboarders, I believe that it could still educate somebody. The project started in November 2009 with some short trips to French and Swiss ski resorts, where we did shootings of some friends: Lions DeSlope / the snowskate magazine
lajonx, Chris Guyot and Adrien Barat. After that we broke our piggy banks and booked a flight to Japan to meet up with Shin Biyajima, a fellow snowskater, and Yoshiro Higai a well-known Japanese boardsport photographer. Shin and Yoshiro introduced us to really cool places; the first being an old Japanese wooden cabin where we spent our evenings and nights. The cabin hoster was really surprised to see foreigners from Europe and was glad to introduce us to the local traditions and his fabulous home cooking (wow the meals were really amazing, cold and hot noodles, tempura, beef stew and delicious soups were waiting for us every evening).

One morning Yoshiro and Shin took us to a sacred wood where we hiked 2 hours to reach a shrine and a monastery. The ancient shrine stands there as the threshold between the world of the living and the world of gods and had about 2 meters of snow on its roof. Once on top of the peak, we got to rest a little, we all made a silent pray and we rode down in the deep pow, surrounded by giant and ancient cedar trees. It was pure magic!
Later we got the opportunity to shoot at night near Nagano, were most resorts offer night riding until 10 pm all week long (that is just great!). The crew threw some cool tricks on the rails, boardslides, frontboard slides and front and back shuvs out were landed. We could not be more stoked to share this amazing trip with our friends. It was a trip of a life time!

The week we spent in Japan was so great that unfortunately it flew away: once back home, we shot the last tricks in some local spots before the final video editing. The outcome is ‘‘Snow Pop, a
