Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Visitor Center

Location: Guadalupe, CA, USA Class: 3rd year Natural environments Studio Professor: Beverly Bass Media: Ink, SketchUp, Photoshop Project Description:

The Guadalupe Dunes is a dynamic landscape creating functional complications. My design harnesses this dynamic aspect of the land to provide learning situations for visitors. Incorporated in the design is a Visitor’s Walk with interactive displays, an outdoor classroom, and eating areas. The form reflects the surrounding landscape.

Sutro Baths Installations

Project Description:

The goal of this project was to identify a dynamic system that occurs at Sutro Baths and create installations based off that system. the system i chose was people coming to the site at night to drink. I designed installations at three locations on site that provided different drinking experiences for the users.

#1: A Reflective View Media: Pastels, Color Pencil, Photoshop Installation Description:

The Reflective View site consists of a sheltering structure made from pipes and metal rods that are designed in a way that empty bottles can be placed in them. The design will hopefully discourage people from breaking bottles and leaving them throughout the site. This structure will also serve as a window into the nighttime experience for the day users. From this viewing spot, I wanted to capture the nighttime experience by carrying the reflection of the moonlight from the water onto the land.

Sutro Baths Installation #2: Ambient Seclusion

Media: Pastels, Color Pencil, SketchUp, Photoshop

Installation Description:

This site is a more enclosed intimate space that is almost completely hidden. It is inside a building like structure where it can only be seen from above or through one of the windows. I designed a space that compliments the secluded appeal of this specific area at Sutro Baths. I created a seating area that has tubular forms, a glass sculptural piece that holds candles to create an ambient glow, and reflective beach glass on the floor.

Sutro Baths Installation #3: The Hangout

Media: Pastels, Color Pencil, SketchUp, Photoshop

Installation Description:

This location, that is adjacent to and overlooks the beach, is where a majority of the drinking and nighttime hangout occurs. The fire pit is a symbol of nighttime activity and is appropriate near the beach. The seating area again provides the same forms and beach glass as the other installations, which connects all three together. The overhanging wall acts as a shield for the fire from the forceful winds. The wall faces out over the ocean with a seat ledge that allows users to hang out over the beach, exposing them to the elements of the sea.

Kaiser Permanente Hospital Healing Garden

Location: Fontana, CA, USA Class: 4th year Project Design and Implementation Studio Professor: Dave Watts Media: Ink, Marker, Illustrator Project Description:

The goal for this project was to design a healing garden for Kaiser Permanente Hospital. My concept was derived from the idea of creating a space that separates patients, guests, and employees from the hospital environment and allows them to relax. I came up with the concept of creating a dream like place where they can escape some of the realities that they face in the hospital. When people enter this garden they should feel as if they have stepped into a dream. All areas of this garden are connected to dreaming.

A New Perspective - Mountainbrook Community Church - Senior Project Location: San Luis Obispo, CA, USA Class: 5th year Senior Project Professor: Cesar Torres Media: AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign, SketchUp, Ink, Graphite, Color Pencil, Marker, Model Materials (straws and popcicle sticks)

Project Description:

Mountainbrook Community Church, in San Luis Obispo, recently built a new facility on purchased land with a desire for growth and development of the site. My project aims to provide them with a site design for their landscape and a process in which it can be implemented. The design showcases the temporality of spaces through staging of implementation over time, community involvement in the process of the design and implementation, and the adaptability of spaces depending on the site uses.

Concept

Unfolding

Mountainbrook Community Church is opening minds and gaining new perspectives by encouraging members to find the true meanings behind preconcieved ideas. I view this as a way of unfolding, peeling back the layers to find the true essence of something.

Change in Perspective Through Movement:

A New Perspective of the conventional symbol of a cross. A New Perspective was a secondary concept of my project that was the ultimate goal of the unfolding concept. Using unfolding as a concept in my design, I aimed to unfold Mountainbrook Community Church and display the essence of the church in the landscape. I highlighted their desire to bring the community together, give praise to God and encourage outreach. I also used the idea of gaining new perspectives to spark interest in members and visitors of the church. The process of unfolding was used in my overall design to determine the phases of implementation for the project.

This display challenges the members of the church to come up with their own meaning of community by asking: ME + ? = Community Thought provoking seating area allows people to interact with the cubes by unfolding them.

Located in the reception plaza are cube boxes for seating. A cube might not have any relevance to the church at first glance, but when you unfold the sides of the box it creates a cross. This display/seating area represents the perceptions that one may have of people or ideas that they may be unfamiliar with. This display is a constant reminder that one should not be judged by their appearance.

Staging of Implementation

To accommodate a limited budget and a need for growth, the final plan was designed to be built in stages. Staging allows for time to allocate finances and retain a slow and steady growth. It also provides more opportunities for the community to get involved with the process. The staging order and process goes in accordance to site need and accessibility. The final plan was unfolded step by step to make sure each stage could be added on to the previous one with out any conflicts.

Early Staging Model: Stages of implementation must happen in a

certain order for it to work. Each stage is prepared to connect with the next one. Once all the stages are complete it will appear whole.

Residential Design

Location: Santa Maria, CA, USA Freelance Project: Design Build Media: AutoCAD and Photoshop

Project Description:

I did a residential design for a home located on a ranch in Santa Maria, California. I created a design plan for the client along with a planting and a lighting plan. Working with the client’s request and budget, I presented him with various design options and used the feedback to come up with the final design. I then worked with a small team to do the installation on the property. I gained valuable experience by being a part of a design build project from finish to end and seeing the transformation from plan to life.
